3 photo: Ariel Ramírez photo: Ariel Ramírez ME Barcelona Hotel Carrer Pere IV Barcelona Initially known as Hotel Habitat Sky, the building was sold in 2008 to Melia Hotels Hence, its name was changed to Hotel ME Barcelona The hotel is thought of as a play of volumes A cubic building acts as a counterpoint behind the tower, which is a rectangular parallelepiped cut lengthwise in two, with one of them half-shifted skywards This rupture of the perfect geometric block creates a movement of form and volume that bestows an urban sense on the insertion of the tower in the horizontal city The shifted half-volume creates the building's reference signs: down, the cantilever at 25 metres height that acts as a gateway; up, the crest in the skyline The hotel's skin is made of micro-perforated aluminium behind a glass curtain wall, which gives the building the image of a bright metal needle m² Main designer, Associate architect Dominique Perrault AIA Salazar Navarro Corada Figueras Arquitectos Habitat Inmobiliaria Jose_Garcia photo: José F García Martín 3

4 photo: Wojtek Gurak photo: Wojtek Gurak Barcelona Pavilion Avinguda del Marquès de Comillas Barcelona A work emblematic of the Modern Movement, it has been exhaustively studied and interpreted as well as having inspired the oeuvre of several generations of architects It was designed as the German national pavilion for the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition Built from glass, travertine and different kinds of marble, the Pavilion was conceived to accommodate the official reception presided over by King Alphonso XIII of along with the German authorities After the closure of the Exhibition, the Pavilion was disassembled in 1930 As time went by, it became a key point of reference not only in Mies van der Rohe's own career but also in twentieth-century architecture as a whole Given the significance and reputation of the Pavilion, in 1980 thoughts turned towards its possible reconstruction Work began in 1983 and the new building was opened on its original site in 1986 photo: Kevin Louage 1929 Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Germany Naomi every day (including holidays) Metro: L1 and L3 (Espanya), Bus: Placa Espanya, FFCC: Espanya, Bus: lines 13 50, Tourist Bus: Caixa Forum Pavelló Mies van der Rohe 4

5 photo: Carles Climent photo: Carles Climent Day centre for the elderly Jardins del Príncep de Girona s/n Barcelona The project's main aim is to create a pleasant building for senior citizens, a space where they feel comfortable and one they can identify with The construction materials and finishes used are therefore familiar, warm and comfortable, such as ceramic and wood The building is designed to respond to the park, partaking in its language, materials and function; a vantage point from which users can survey everything going on around them, both in the park and in the street The ground floor is permeable, with a hallway that runs right through the building The building itself represents a new entrance from the street, leading into the park One of the park's esplanades, currently paved in wood, will have a new entrance via the building The tiled roof slopes down the smaller façades to the ground, creating the impression of a great doorway The larger façades, with great picture windows and timber framework, pick up the motif of the park?s wooden paving and street furniture photo: Carles Climent m², Landscape architect, Urban planner BCQ arquitectura BCQarquitecturaBarcelona Barcelona City Council, Horta-Guinardó District 5

7 photo: BCQ arquitectura barcelona photo: BCQ arquitectura barcelona Plaça Vila de Madrid Plaça Vila de Madrid s/n Barcelona The design sets out to revitalize the square as an urban pedestrian space, celebrating its archaeological site The project proposed a central stretch of grass on the same level as CCanuda and the eastern side of the square The grassy surface slopes gently down to the level of the Roman necropolis Before the Palau Sabassona building, a strip of pavement with a portico provides a platform from which to view the tombs A walkway projects over the archaeological remains, joining up with the prolongation of CDuc de la Victòria, which connects with the Rambla via a shopping arcade This walkway houses a flexible system of retracting sliding doors, constructed to control access to the archaeological site The outer edge of the square is developed using the construction materials and street furniture habitually found in Barcelona's old town Grass, basaltic stone and Corten steel are introduced into the centre, however, the latter being used in walls to protect the existing trees photo: BCQ arquitectura barcelona m², Landscape architect BCQ arquitectura BCQarquitecturaBarcelona Foment de Ciutat Vella, Barcelona City Council 7

10 photo: Maria José Marcos photo: Maria José Marcos South-East Forum Coastal Park Rambla de Prim Barcelona The southeast coastal park and auditoria project was part of the infrastructure that the city of Barcelona had planned as the Host City for the International Forum of Cultures, held in 2004 The organisational prototype that the architect proposed for the park was borrowed from a frequent model in coastal areas; sand dunes They are a form, a material organisation with little internal structure, merely sand, shaped by wind The park provides open air auditoria and spaces for events and activities, wind protection and suitable habitats for vegetation The park allows and encourages sports and leisure activities, from walking to running, biking, skateboarding and a series of performance and relaxing areas by a network of paths or activity zones Views are deliberately controlled by the demarcation of these zones; narrow, focused views broaden to wide open views photo: Maria José Marcos m², Landscape architect Foreign Office s magicarch 10

13 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Santa Catarina Market Avinguda de Francesc Cambó Barcelona Wonderful Mercat Santa Caterina strikes a magical balance between local producers and consumers, contemporary architecture and tourism The redevelopment retains its original use as a retail food market A huge, undulating canopy covers an existing, former rundown neo-classical market in a large square within sight of the gothic cathedral The canopy consists of a mosaic of 325,000 vividly multicolored hexagonal Spanish tiles set in mortar, "whose various colors recall a sill life of produce" It is a view that will be particularly appreciated by the residents of the neighboring apartment blocks The roof is supported on three primary clear-span trusses that cut through, up and over the roof But, from below, it reads as an organic timber assembly At the opposite end from the retained arcade, an irregular latticework of timber slats brings to mind an Indonesian village hall - a typically offbeat Miralles invention and a reminder that he worked on this design before his death in m² Services engineer Enric Miralles & Benedetta Tagliabue EMBT PGI Grup Foment de Ciutat Vella MI_MOA photo: Naomi Schiphorst Barcelona's daily food markets are all in covered halls and are open daily between 8am and 3pm and 5pm till 8pm, though times may change in summer and winter Metro : Jaume I (Line 4) 13

15 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Forum Building Avinguda Diagonal Barcelona The Forum Building is a triangular measuring 180 meters on each side and 25 meters in height, located within the triangle formed by the surrounding streets It is considered by some to be an icon of the "New Barcelona " However, local opinion on its aesthetic and functional merits is deeply divided It was the symbol of the controversial 2004 Universal Forum of Cultures and the serious flaws that arose during its construction were widely covered in both the Spanish national and foreign press It has lain empty since the Forum and is beginning to show marked deterioration The building is structured around an auditorium with a capacity to hold 3,200 people The seating is below the Forum Plaza level The upper part is suspended from the triangular superstructure measuring 180 meters per side that covers the plaza, and rests on 17 pillars From it, the exhibit hall and the roof of the auditorium are suspended The exhibition hall covers nearly 5,000 m Herzog and De Meuron Universal Forum of Cultures Barcelona 2004 Naomi photo: Francisco Nogueira Metro: L4 - Stop "Maresme/Fórum" Bus: Lines NitBus: N6 Tramway: Line 1, Stop Trambesós: Fórum 15
