2 Chile Haus Fischertwiete Hamburg This enormous Brick Expressionist building spans a street, the Fischertwiete The building is famed for its top, which is reminiscent of a ship's prow, and the façades, which meet at a very sharp angle at the corner of the Pumpen and Niedernstrasse The best view of the building is from the east Because of the accentuated vertical elements and the recessed upper stories, as well as the curved façade on the Pumpen street, the building has, despite its enormous size, a touch of lightness It was commissioned by the shipping magnate Henry B Sloman, who made his fortune trading saltpeter from Chile, hence the name Chile House The location's close vicinity to the Elbe river necessitated a specially sealed cellar, and heating equipment was constructed in a caisson that can float within the building, so the equipment can't be damaged in the event of flooding Project is public! 1924 Fritz Höger Henry B Sloman Naomi 2

3 photo: Thies Raetzke photo: Maxim Schulz Elbphilharmonie Platz der Deutschen Einheit Hamburg On the banks of the river Elbe in Hamburg s HafenCity has arised Hamburg s new cultural landmark: the Elbphilharmonie The interplay between the archaic appearance of the former warehouse known as the Kaispeicher A and the bold curve of the dazzling glass corpus is the architectural calling card of the Elbphilharmonie The building complex will, in addition to three concert halls, encompass a hotel, 45 private apartments, and the publicly accessible Plaza, where old and new conjoin in an exciting synthesis and the visitors are treated to a unique 360 panoramic view of the city from a height of 37 m The centrepiece of the Elbphilharmonie is also one of the most exciting structural challenges in Europe at the moment: A world-class concert hall at a height of 50 m with seating for 2,100, which is decoupled from the rest of the building for soundproofing reasons The Elbphilharmonie is the perfect symbiosis of architecture and music at a unique site within the historic city port photo: Maxim Schulz Project is public! 5 Police Station Davidwache Expansion Kastanienallee Hamburg Friz Schumacher designed the Davidwache in 1913 in the form of a gabled middle-class house The expansion is an attempt to expose the previously predominantly visible gables, while at the same time merging the old and the new building with a bridge structure The result is a building that consciously absorbs the formal spirit of the Schumacher building, forming a unity together with it, and at the same time emphasises its own self confident character reflecting present times Project is public! 2004 Prof Bernhard Winking Architekten BDA Hamburger Gesellschaft fur Beteiligungsverwaltung Naomi Located in the neighbourhood of St Pauli, near the famous Reeperbahn 5

6 photo: Ralf Buscher photo: Christian Richters Empire Riverside Hotel Bernhard-Nocht-Straße Hamburg The five star hotel and a retail and office building in Hamburg St Pauli is part of a sqm housing and office development on the former Bavaria brewery grounds The site can be regarded as an urban vacuum where new development needs to take up a mediating role between the different neighboring urban situations The 20-storey hotel complex consists of different staggered volumes, where the height of each volume corresponds with the eaves of the surrounding buildings The hotel tower with its 328 hotel rooms rises above the city, creating a new visual landmark for Hamburg s skyline From the direction of the water it appears as a slim, vertical volume, fitting into the topography of the famous Hafenkrone, the crown of the harbour, a series of impressive turn-of-the-century buildings and church spires along the embankment of the river Elbe The glass-bronze façade covers the buildings as a homogenous layer, unifying the different volumes Project is public! 7 Dock 47 Pinnasberg Hamburg An idiosyncratic solitaire was planned as a functional office building for a property in St Paulu with great demands in terms of the urban development integration into the surroundings The object character of the building was achieved with only a few changes: the building module follows the specifications of the development plan, but its outer walls deviate from the vertical on two sides in that they lean outwards Project is public! 2004 Spengler Wiescholek Architekten Naomi 7

8 Office Grimm 6 Grimm Hamburg The historic buildings along Hamburg s Fleet - the historic canal in the city centre - are packed tightly together The office building Grimm 6 at Nikolaifleet, is also influenced from the traditional scale: the building takes it s narrow and tall proportions, the number of storeys and it s vertical emphasis, which is expressed in a building set-back reaching into the roofscape, from the proportions of the historical buildings The conception thereby orients itself in terms of the height to the other structures in the immediate (canal) vicinity Project is not public! 10 photo: Klaus Frahm arturimages photo: Klaus Frahm arturimages Office Rolandsbrücke Rolandsbrücke Hamburg twicklung/abgeschlossene_projekte/rolandsbrueckehtml The building gives the long-neglected historical center of Hamburg a striking new façade The office building is located on historic ground: in-between the building of the Patriotic Society and the Commerz Bank, where the Renaissance City Hall, the Stock Exchange and the Hotel Kaiserhof used to be In addition, there was the former Lloyd-yard, on whose grounds the new building was created The entire ensemble disappeared in the fire of 1842 The structure is strikingly visible in the axis of the Domstrasse and is also on the east-west street clearly perceptible The architect had the complex task -in the diversity of the heterogeneous orientation of surrounding buildings to adopts itself to the different scales of the surroundings The choice of material is restrained: metal and glass The façade creates depth in a masterly manner, and distinguishes itself from many recent glass buildings Project is not public!
