3 photo: Klaus Frahm photo: Klaus Frahm Side Drehbahn Hamburg Side is a 5-star hotel in Hamburg located at a very central location, between the Gänsemarkt square and the National Opera, close to the Binnenalster and only a few minutes walk from art and cultural centers as well as shopping precincts The architect Jan Störmer created a forward-looking facade featuring a combination of glass and nature stone that stretches across all 12 floors From the top 3 floors, you have a wonderful view across Hamburg This architecture is complimented by the work of designer Matteo Thun Just minimalist, reducing everything to the bare essentials, that is the fundamental idea behind the work of Matteo Thun when he decorated the public spaces The atrium-styled lobby, which stretches up to the 8th floor, lives from the illuminated installations of the New York light choreographer Robert Wilson photo: Klaus Frahm Project is public! 4 photo: Doug Snower photo: Doug Snower East Hamburg Simon-von-Utrecht Strasse Hamburg Housed in a former iron foundry, in close proximity to the world-renowned Reeperbahn, the East aims to introduce the perfect match between gastronomy, hospitality and nightlife, all organized in a donut-like plan around a three storey high restaurant with 28-foot tall doors opening onto a courtyard According to the architect, the design was inspired by the old foundry and the forms of the cast iron objects produced there, by the alloy of contemporary Eastern and Western cultures, by the memory fragments of surreal first-trips to Asia and by a deep appreciation for the Eastern recognition of a spiritual essence in nature Four gigantic pillars tower from the ground to the top floor of the former factory hall, while parts of the original foundation in exposed brick have been dramatically lit, serving as unusual divisions in the restaurant area photo: Doug Snower Project is public! 5 photo: Ralf Buscher photo: Christian Richters Empire Riverside Hotel Bernhard-Nocht-Straße Hamburg The five star hotel and a retail and office building in Hamburg St Pauli is part of a sqm housing and office development on the former Bavaria brewery grounds The site can be regarded as an urban vacuum where new development needs to take up a mediating role between the different neighboring urban situations The 20-storey hotel complex consists of different staggered volumes, where the height of each volume corresponds with the eaves of the surrounding buildings The hotel tower with its 328 hotel rooms rises above the city, creating a new visual landmark for Hamburg s skyline From the direction of the water it appears as a slim, vertical volume, fitting into the topography of the famous Hafenkrone, the crown of the harbour, a series of impressive turn-of-the-century buildings and church spires along the embankment of the river Elbe The glass-bronze façade covers the buildings as a homogenous layer, unifying the different volumes Project is public! 11 Oval Am Kaiserkai Hamburg age=projekte_detail&show=projekte&item=27 The slogan "Lebens(t)räume am Strom", meaning living dreams and spaces near the river, constitutes the basic theme for this residential project that imetas Hamburg, Büro Ingenhoven und Partner Architekten and Primus Immobilien AG developed The oval residential tower by the future Tall Ship Harbour is an eye catcher; the building's succinct shape forms an important contrast to the adjacent buildings Apartments that are flooded with light and which can be designed individually are located on eleven floors offering impressive views over HafenCity, Speicherstadt, the River Elbe and downtown Hamburg The units range from 58 m2 to 300 m² 'Kontor am Kaiserkai', an office building with six floors featuring a leasing space of approximately 3,875 m², will be created next to the residential tower (text from HafenCity Hamburg) Project is not public! 13 Hamburg Music School Mittelweg Hamburg This school is divided into two main parts; a public area (coffee area, lecture rooms, etc) and the private area (classrooms, administration area), which are connected by a common entrance, that can also be used separately The café opens to the yard and a 'park' The teachers room can be connected to this café For functional and acoustical reasons, the classrooms are separated from the administration area on different floors The administrative area is situated on the ground floor, with areas for information and public relations found close to the main entrance The classrooms are on the first and second floor, in front of them there is a waiting zone 'between' the trees A construction of a series of ramps and different staircases leads from the entrance hall to the auditorium on the first floorthis link from the entrance to the second floor allows for a ceromonious procession for guests and serves as the backdrop for public addresses Public access unknown! 1997 Enric Miralles & Benedetta Tagliabue EMBT pkrajewski_pl 13

14 Dockland Office Building Van-der-Smissen-Straße Hamburg At the end of Edgar-Engelhard-Kai, between the northern Elbe and the Fischereihafen, the Dockland Office Building stands like a gateway to the city of Hamburg The 'prow' of the ship-like building cantilevering for almost 40 metres, is a dynamic addition to the 'stern' of the neighbouring ferry terminal The building, supported by a steel-framed construction, contains approximately 9000 square metres of office space The depth of the building makes it possible to locate communication areas such as kitchens or conference rooms as well as archive areas and print rooms within the central zone of the building The large, open areas with freely positioned installations create a generous working atmosphere The users can savour the spectacular panoramic views over the harbour through the glazed façades (text from architect's website) Project is public! 15 Elbberg Campus Altona Große Elbstraße Hamburg Situated between warehouses, industrial buildings, and green areas, the Elbberg Campus in Hamburg's Großen Elbstraße, Altona, combines living, working and relaxation with one another The design is based upon the remains of existing buildings: newly designed offices, apartments and lofts are located within a newly designed park landscape, following the contours of the slope New footpaths, staircases and terraces connect the areas above the Altonaer Balkon, to the harbour The office building is orientated towards the public spaces: the roof of the base of the building serves as an extensive terrace, offering a wonderful view over the harbour Private and common areas within the complex are, on the one hand, clearly defined, and at the same time, harmoniously interwoven with a variety of architectural styles (text from architect's website) Public access unknown! 17 Bucerius Law School Lecture Hall Jungiusstrasse Hamburg The new lecture hall building of Bucerius Law School in Hamburg is located at the intersection of the axes of the old building's Botanical Institute and opposite the main entrance of the restored buildings s MPP Meding Plan + Projekt designed a new building, putting the historical concept of the garden Tempietto in a landscaped park into a modern form of language The lecture room is a glass-sheathed hull The area between the auditorium body and glass façade serves as a development zone and as a climate buffer against cold and heat Public access unknown! 18 LTD-1 Lübeckertordamm Hamburg This new office building, in use by Securvita, was designed on the grounds of St Georg Hospital in Hamburg It is a transition from the hospital complex that will culminate in the future housing complex (which will also be a part of the hospital complex) The configuration of the four wings that are similar to green boomerangs creates an internal courtyard which is accessible for everyone Well-ventilated office spaces, the use of natural materials and the layout of the spaces based on the principles of Feng Shui for stress, are combined in the main health centre A healthy lifestyle and friendly work environment are combined with harmony Project is public! 2006 Pysall Ruge Architekten pkrajewski_pl 18

24 photo: Thies Raetzke photo: Maxim Schulz Elbphilharmonie Platz der Deutschen Einheit Hamburg On the banks of the river Elbe in Hamburg s HafenCity has arised Hamburg s new cultural landmark: the Elbphilharmonie The interplay between the archaic appearance of the former warehouse known as the Kaispeicher A and the bold curve of the dazzling glass corpus is the architectural calling card of the Elbphilharmonie The building complex will, in addition to three concert halls, encompass a hotel, 45 private apartments, and the publicly accessible Plaza, where old and new conjoin in an exciting synthesis and the visitors are treated to a unique 360 panoramic view of the city from a height of 37 m The centrepiece of the Elbphilharmonie is also one of the most exciting structural challenges in Europe at the moment: A world-class concert hall at a height of 50 m with seating for 2,100, which is decoupled from the rest of the building for soundproofing reasons The Elbphilharmonie is the perfect symbiosis of architecture and music at a unique site within the historic city port photo: Maxim Schulz Project is public! 26 photo: Frankss photo: Frankss Office Boat Uferstrasse 8e Hamburg The two-story houseboat in Eilbek channel was designed by two architecture students as an office for an architect and house boat specialist The main feature was the shape of the boat, which was crucial for the choice of materials: only non-treated materials, such as oak rough sawn for flooring and natural aluminium for the façade They will over time change the appearance of the boat The deconstructive language also leads to the fact that with the exception of the floors almost no part of the boat is a flat or vertical surface photo: Frankss Project is not public! 27 Unilever Haus Strandkai Hamburg mburgopensforbusinessaspx The new Unilever headquarter building for, Austria and Switzerland is located in HafenCity Here Unilever's new building opens itself up to the city and its inhabitants The central element and heart of the design is the atrium, flooded by daylight which, on the ground floor, gives passers-by the opportunity to get to know the company better while browsing in the shop stocked with Unilever products, sitting in the café or relaxing in the spa The atrium is also the central location for people to meet and communicate Vibrant and communicative interaction evolves, thereby fostering a feeling of togetherness among the employees The workplace is no longer a separate department The building itself reinforces the identity of the company At the centre of the atrium is a glass elevator, in addition to a stairway that leads to Unilever's reception area on the second floor Project is public! 28 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Frankss Marco Polo Tower Hübenerstraße Hamburg In the Marco Polo Tower 58 apartments are located at 15 floors in a tower of about 55 meters high - typically four per floor The apartments vary between 60 and 340m² The m² price varies widely from 3,500 to 10,000 euro The moving shape of the building results that virtually no floor plan is like another Bearing walls were reduced to a minimum, the user can thus organize the space according to his own preferences On the other hand, the architects have been trying hard to include the panoramas, vistas and the incidence of light on the times of the day in the spatial and architectural concept of the tower With its soft, round polished contours the tower stands out significantly together with Christoph Ingenhoven's oval residential tower at Kaiserkai from the mass of new buildings Project is not public! 29 Spiegel HQ Brooktorkai Hamburg Der Spiegel Headquarters is a 50,000 square-meter project comprised of two buildings: one for Der Spiegel and another, the Ericus-building, for other offices With its clearly readable figure each building has a reserved yet characteristic expression that provides a special significance in relation to creating identity for all the surrounding public spaces The Ericus-building will be essential for the completion of the large park space Spiegel will become the gateway to Hafencity seen from the main station and Brooktorkai The two buildings are designed as large U-forms that embrace the urban space they are directed towards They form two plazas: an arrival plaza for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers towards Brooktorkai and an open public plaza, which has a direct connection to the waterfront promenade The buildings has been nominated for a gold medal in HafenCity, which is new certification that recognizes the development of sustainable buildings in Project is public! 30 Deichtor Office Building Oberbaumbrücke Hamburg In 2002 this city landmark at Hamburg's Deichtor has been built, directly at the southern entrance to the city centre The ten-storey office building Deichtor mediates between the business district, the Speicherstadt and the future Hafencity, as a hinge, connecting the dynamic of the streets and the rail road with the expanse and the calm of the water Central to the building are alternatively mirrored z-shaped office floors, which generate three-to-four storey voids Four winter gardens and two four-storey lobbies generate lively, green 'windows', which are not only perceived as attractive eye-catchers by night and day, but which also create a comfortable atmosphere within, for the users of the building For acoustic and climatic reasons, the building is contained within a glass skin The offices are located at the outer double façade, or to the winter gardens Project is not public! 31 photo: Nazar Leskiw S-KAI Sandtorkai Hamburg With its variedly designed shape and elegantly structured dark-red aluminium façade the office and commercial building SKAI creates a striking architectural fixed-point in the new quarter 'Am Sandtorkai' at the heart of Hamburg's HafenCity In order to bring the various functions into a coherent shape and to embed the building into the famous environment in an optimal manner, the architects deliberately designed the compact structure as an S-shape To the North the thus evolving break resembles the numerous jutties and set-offs of the adjacent row of new buildings along the street Am Sandtorkai Here, the red color creates a flowing transition towards the brick warehouses of the warehouse district (text by Robert Uhde-mapolis) Project is public! 32 Sumatra residential and office building Überseeallee Hamburg Within the Überseequartier plans, this building acts as a urban attraction, offering retail areas on the ground floor and hosting offices and apartments alongside the main Überseeboulevard The sculptural movement of the inclined façade fascinates at first glance Aesthetically, the building redress to the red-brick harbour aesthetics of the historic Speicherstadt on the one hand and the traditional white plaster façades of the inner city on the other Mixed with glass and aluminium, the outer façades facing the streets are predominantly composed of natural stone In contrast, all façades towards the courtyard are white On an urban scale, the building's shape allows for a semi-public space and facilitates social interaction within the Überseequartier, while its architectonic appearance strongly relates to the character of Hamburg Public access unknown!
