5 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Nazar Leskiw Grosser Grasbrook 9 - Centurion Commercial Center Großer Grasbrook Hamburg To Baumschlager Eberle, the site at Hamburg's Sandtorhafen harbor was a very favorable location for construction The neutrality of building use and the structural orientation of planning are as natural as they are perceptible in the tradition of harbor architecture Baumschlager-Eberle reflects this common sense of industrial architecture, just as they integrate the new tasks of the service society to achieve that identity of users and architecture which ensures the longevity of a building Identity is related to the site At Hamburg's "sand gate harbor", the name is programmatic: the new office building, together with the building by David Chipperfield opposite it, marks the gateway to the adjoining dense settlement in the southern area of the new Harbor City photo: Nazar Leskiw 2011 baumschlager & eberle Nazar 5

12 photo: Christoph Gebler Multi-Storey Parking Garage Am Sandtorkai Hamburg A new masonry façade, which corresponds to the altered storey heights and the interior structure of the multi-storey car park, replaces the original street and canal façades Nevertheless in terms of eaves height and façade structure it recreates the characteristic aspects of the former Warehouse Block O with hatches and rope-winch porches Masonry grilles - either recessed or flush with the façade surface - were designed to replace the former ventilation openings of the warehouse and to ensure the natural cross-ventilation of the open car park decks Roofings, including the rope-winch porches, verge and eaves flashings as well as falls are made of copper sheeting matching the bricks' different shades of red The indirect illumination of the park decks via flood-lit ceilings does not impair the lighting scheme of the "Speicherstadt" photo: Christoph Gebler m² Von Gerkan, Marg und Partner (GMP) Nazar 12

20 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd New Alster Arcades Alsterarkaden Hamburg The historic Alster Arcades in the centre of Hamburg characterises the city between the Binnenalster and the Rathausmarkt However, while the old arcade dating from the 19th Century, has lost none of it's attraction, the newer part, with it's flat-roof construction and dating from the 1960's, has neither it's loftiness or it's generosity BRT's design, dating from 1998, has adopted the grace and form of the historical buildings, without merely copying them The theme of the old arcade is reinterpreted in a modern manner Over a length of approximately 80 metres, the partially transparent roof of the New Alster Arcades drapes like a long piece of material falling towards the Alsterfleet The regular rhythm of the parabolic arches serves to connect with the massive arches of their historic counterparts (text from architect's website) m² BRT Architekten pkrajewski_pl photo: Dirk Verwoerd 20
