Manggha Art Centre Marii Konopnickiej Krakow The most characteristic element of the Manggha building is the rolling roof, a reflection of the adjacent Vistula river It also recalls an iconic Japanese wood print depicting fishermen in struggle against a surging wave This mix of Japanese sensibility and tradition of place have given rise to a deeply humanistic, discrete, internally intimate and even warm-hearted structure The designers gave noble materials voice to invoke an architectural haiku, a succinct, communicative form that eschews overbearing narration The very idea of a building being designed in Krakow by a worldl-acclaimed architect, Arata Isozaki, was sensational in in the early 1990s Two facts raised the project's profile: it's benefactor, director Andrzej Wajda, and that it was to contain a unique collection of Japanese art The location made for an additional challenge - it is situated opposite the Wawel Castle, for centuries the seat of Polish Kings (text from Architektura Murator magazine 5/2006) m² Main designer, Structural engineer Structural engineer Acoustics consultant Arata Isozaki Ingarden & Ewy Architekci Jan Grabacki Jan Gugalski Jan Raczny Kyoto-Krakow Foundation Tuesday - Sunday: ) Tram/Bus station: Jubilat Tramway nr 1, 2, 6 Bus nr 109, 114, 124, 164, 173, 179, 194, 439, 444 2) Tram/Bus station: Rondo Grunwaldzkie Tramway nr 18, 19, 22 Bus nr 100, 103, 112, 114, 124, 124, 128, 162, 164, 173, 179, 184, 194, 439,
photo: Aleksander Rutkowski photo: Aleksander Rutkowski Preludium Terraced Houses Krolowej Jadwigi Krakow The main idea of the project aimed at creating a dense complex of houses of various usable areas Corner buildings measure 183 and 163 sqm, while smaller segments in a row are 130 and 152 sqm Large window panes of sitting rooms and bedrooms blend the interior with a natural scenery The essential solution of the complex was situating terraces at attics, from which extends a superb view on vast green areas of Krakow Elevations were covered with plaster work, and finished with wood and titanium-zinc sheet The front of the house, as opposed to the garden side, does not bear marks of typical divisions into segments It is only the ground floor that was demarcated by a line which defined individual segments It is reached by an original and homogeneous elevation, enriched with protruding boxes, covered with titanium-zinc sheet photo: Aleksander Rutkowski Public access unknown! m² Mobius Architekci Okap Developer Mobius Taxi, bus number
Gate To The City Of The Dead Powstanców Krakow Situated on the edge of the old cemetery, away from the entrance, this funeral chapel is reached by the regular pattern of paths that wind between the graves, in a landscape where higher patches of ground alternate with flat areas The difference in ground heights is elegantly resolved by the creation of a wide, grassed terrace ending with an embankment wall containing a long line of funeral urns The chapel is long and narrow and slightly arched: a glazed nucleus encapsulated in a subtle masonry that contains it without completely closing it The two parallel lateral walls in reinforced concrete seem only to stand next to the central block; and on them is impressed an upward movement - rendered still more sensitive by their curved form whereby next to the main façade they do not touch the ground The slightly convex roof is interrupted on one side to leave a strip open to the light and to a view of the sky (text from wwwsedyit) m² Main designer, Romuald Loegler 10
photo: Pawel Mazur photo: Pawel Mazur The Ravens House Rynek Glowny Krakow Today s House Ravens was converted from two mediaeval houses in the late 19th century; Since 1991 it has been home to the International Cultural Centre which from 1998 to 2008 carried out thorough modernisation of the building Conducting the project, prepared by Romuald Loegler, allowed to expand the Ravens Conference Complex and to create a new exhibition space in the first floor patio There are also new offices and seminar rooms created which will serve the purpose of a library and a publication centre Overall, upgrade and adaptation works affect 1480 m2 of floor space As far as the notion dimension is concerned, the modernization is a new link in the process of creating a material infrastructure of a space for dialogue, which the ICC has been trying to built for years On the architectural level, the project leads to the integration of both front and annexe buildings and it creates a new aesthetic quality at the Main Market Square in Krakow photo: Pawel Mazur 2008 Romuald Loegler helenita ICC Gallery: Tue - Sun: ICC Library: Mon & Fri: , Tue - Thu
photo: Hania Danilow Com-Com Zone Tadeusza Ptaszyckiego Krakow 'Com-Com Zone' is a modern sports and educational facility, built in Nowa Huta district at the initiative of the mayor of Krakow The name of the building (Com-Com) is a shortcut from the words community, comfort, competence, company, communication, competition, commerce Com-Com Center Development Zone is an object whose purpose is not only creating the conditions for sporting competitions, but also building local communities, the creation of interface among young and offer them support This is conducive to building the identity of Nowa Huta, which for many years has been treated as a second-class district The role of business is the financial support of the centre's activities in the mission and social responsibility m² Wojciech Obtulowicz 12
Wyspianski 2000 Pavilion Plac Wszystkich Swietych Krakow The 'Wyspianski 2000' Exhibition and Information Pavilion was unveiled in summer 2007, during the celebration of 750 years of Krakow's existence The building was designed by Polish architects Ingarden & Ewy and serves exhibition and information purposes by promoting the cultural and tourist attractions of Krakow and the Malopolska region Perhaps the most significant part of the building are the stained glass windows by Stanislaw Wyspianski; originally designed for Wawel Cathedral but rejected as being too risque, after over 100 years they've finally found their home (text from m² Ingarden & Ewy Architekci Wyspianski 2000 Foundation Everyday:

photo: Christian Richters photo: Christian Richters Royal Netherlands Embassy Warsaw ul Kawalerii Warsaw The Embassy is situated near Lazienski Park and combines the chancery and ambassador's residence The objective was a design that reflects the Dutch tradition of transparency and openness Inspired by the Baroque style of Tylman van Gameren, a Dutch architect who influenced Polish architecture in the 17th century, the chancery is designed to be light and translucent Retaining most of the trees, the new complex radiates a park-like quality The residence is conceived as a villa in a park, its stone exterior reinforcing the concept of an independent element in the environment A courtyard between the buildings allows views out into the landscape and a feature gate with an organic design combines with a glazed screen to create a second layer to the chancery Natural stone loggias connect this 'open' outer wall to the exterior envelope of the building These elements mediate between the street and the new embassy As a result, the Embassy is both part of and enclosed by its surroundings photo: Christian Richters m², Interior architect, Landscape architect Designed by Erick van Egeraat Designed_by_Erick_van_Egeraat Dutch Ministery of Foreign Affairs, The Hague Monday - Friday: 09:00-13:00 and 14:00-17:00 them at war[at]minbuzanl or call
Metropolitan Office Building Plac Marszalka Józefa Pilsudskiego Warsaw Pilsudski Square is one of Warsaw's most important public spaces This huge square at the heart of the city is rich in historical and cultural heritage The seventeenth-century Saski Palace and the Baroque Brühl Palace that lined it were both destroyed in the Second World War but there are proposals to rebuild them Large crowds congregate in the square to visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier; ceremonial events take place in it and local residents traverse it every day The Metropolitan Office Building occupies the northern edge of the square, completing its missing side and re-establishing the formal volume of the square It attempts a sensitive response to a unique set of challenges posed by the historic nature of the square The aim was to create a thoroughly modern counterpart to the neighbouring historical buildings - matching their height, mass and materials - without resorting to pastiche (text from architect's website) m² Main designer, Foster & Partners JEMS DEGI 16
photo: Wojciech Krynski photo: Wojciech Krynski Zlote Tarasy Ulica Zlota 59 Warsaw Zlote Tarasy (Golden Terraces) is one of those commercial megastructures that are cropping up all over the world More than square meters of mixed-use development occupies a large multi-level plot in the very centre of the Polish capital Its aggressive urban presence, chaotic-looking composition and dull grey cladding is mitigated by an extraordinary glass roof covering the heart of the valley Its undulating shape was inspired by the idea of a piece of cloth stretched over a number of spheres From the outside the roof is rather overwhelmed by the higher parts of the complex, but from the inside the roof imbues the characterless retail space with a sense of openness and exceptionality Among the dense accumulation of signs, goods and interior architecture elements it boldly acts as a single huge window providing wide views towards the city's urban skyline and an illusion of open-air shopping photo: Wojciech Krynski 2007 Technical engineer Supplier Jerde Partnership International ARUP Waagner-Biro Stahl-Glas-Technik ING Real Estate ReWritable_pl 17
Platinium Business Park Domaniewska Warsaw Five office buildings will form an urban quarter in what was once an industrial area and now an office area in Sluzewiec The complex will neighbour on a group of offices that make up the Mokotów Business Park The underlying compositional concept aims to create a clear layout of peripheral development and diversify the external and internal character of the quarter Each building consists of two parts: an elongated rectangle forming part of the street frontage, and a nearly regular cube set in a freely planned green garden interior The diversified formula of the façades of the different components emphasizes their different roles in the urban space Dense vertical divisions of street-facing elevations of stainless-steel elements contrast with the glazed cubes featuring large horizontal divisions (text from architect's website) 2008 JEMS GTC 18
Bialy Kamien Housing Estate Bialy Kamien Warsaw This project is located next to Mokotowskie Field at the confluence of Rakowiecka Street and Andrew Bobola Street The estate consists of 150 apartments and 6 service premises located in 3 buildings The windows of the apartments have a unique view of the old Palm House Project is not public! m² JEMS MPRO 19
Nefryt Office Building Domaniewska Warsaw This building was erected in the centre of the Sluzewiec business area, amidst chaotic development of diversified architectural quality It forms part of a complex of three office buildings that organize the streetside quarter space Seven repeatable office floors are designed on an asymmetrical H-plan, with a centrally situated core and a variable layout of two-bay and three-bay structures As in other office buildings designed by JEMS, abutting the core are two-storey garden atria that make up an executive framework to the entrances leading to the tenant component and connected visually with green internal courtyards Strong architectural accents are provided by the two-storey entrance arcades and two staircases situated at the external glazed façade These have a distinct geometry of solid railing, contrasted with filigree and a rhythmical vertical elevation of black titanium-and-zinc sheet metal and wood Project is not public! m² JEMS GTC Topaz Sp z oo 20
Agora Headquarters Czerska Warsaw Agora's headquarters is a modern, though warm and friendly building, thanks to the use of natural materials (oak and cedar) and external and internal gardens The entire southern elevation is glazed The cedar-framed windows reach from floor to ceiling which ensures plenty of natural light To deflect excessive sunlight, there are vertical cedar brise-soleils on the glazed elevation and a whole system of mesh walkways made of galvanized steel At the first floor the eye is drawn to a colonnade of concrete pillars and three rectangular patios The lobby is an open space and serves multiple functions The part nearest to Czerska Street is open to the public It provides access to the advertising office and a little café for customers and guests (text from project's website) m² JEMS Agora 21
Herbert Hoover Square Krakowskie Przedmiescie Warsaw Herbert Hoover Square is located in the historic centre of Warsaw - a green enclave situated at the widest section of Krakowskie Przedmiescie, between the Mickiewicz Monument and the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Passau The main objective of the design was to reorganize this neglected place and make it an attractive public square in a garden setting In spatial terms, the key decision was to situate an elongated, lowered square between the historical monuments This clear arrangement made it possible to establish a better relationship between the garden square and the street running at two levels around it New facilities include a café pavilion, a kiosk, public conveniences, an underground restaurant and a gallery These are embedded in the layout of the existing and newly designed stone walls 'Water steps' closing off the square to the south allow the Mickiewicz Monument to blend into the composition of the square (text from architect's website) m² JEMS 22
Wolf Nullo Office Building Franciszka Nullo Warsaw The Wolf Nullo office building is located in the prestigious part of Warsaw, in the vicinity of the parliament, embassies and government buildings Main characteristics of the plot are its tiny size and a neighbourhood of moderate, 4-storey high buildings During the design phase, the future user of the building was unknown The small scale of the building as well as its location allowed for an assumption that it would be a company searching for its seat in a building modest in size but with a distinctive image The design of the building is determined by two elements The main part is a classically shaped block finished in travertine The movable elements of the façades, stone screens, and the blinds allow for individual regulation of the climate of the interiors, signaling the state of activity within the building at the same time The front façade can, depending on the momentary setting of the screens, switch from full openness to a stone monolith (text from World ure) Project is not public! m² APAKA Wolf Immobilien Polen 23
Okrag-Wilanowska Housing Wilanowska Warsaw The Powisle district in Warsaw, located between the city centre and the Vistula bank, is exceptionally attractive to investors Development along these streets was to a large extent demolished during the war, and complemented by freestanding buildings in the 1960s However, there still remain many vacant areas, which are now being developed and transformed The architects from APAKA inserted two buildings in the middle of an area of two-and-a-half hectares, built up irregularly and at various angles The new housing is characterized by a perfect balance between originality and conformity The first one, along Wilanowska Street, combines the features of a tenement and a freestanding block, and thus introduces some order into the surrounding development The other housing block is hidden inside the estate The new buildings are connected by an underground garage Large apartments, many of over 100 sqm, have views to all sides through port-fenetres (text from Architektura-Murator) Project is not public! m² Structural engineer APAKA Chodor Projekt SBM Torwar 24
Centrum Królewska Marszalkowska Street Warsaw Centrum Królewska is a prestigious, modern, 'A-class' building, located in the centre of Warsaw, at the crossing of Marszalkowska and Królewska streets The centre offers about m2 of surface area for rent, spread over fourteen levels It has a three-level car park, with 108 parking spaces (text from project's website) Project is not public! m² APAKA Krolewska Sp z oo 25
Harmony Office Center Stanislawa Zaryna Warsaw This is a commercial A-class office building with retail on the ground floor Standing on a one-storey plinth, the building consists of three independent segments housing office lobbies, retail and restaurants The exterior façades are made of stone and glass, whereas the interior façades are glazed The design by Grupa 5 was chosen in a competition (text from architects' website) Project is not public! m² Main designer, Grupa 5 APAKA Eko-Park SA 26
Building B7 Stanislawa Zaryna Warsaw This is a luxurious apartment block, located on the site of the EKO PARK housing complex Building B7 is a freestanding building set on a shared garage The positioning, shape and outline of the building respond to the detailed analysis of sunlight and shading patterns The building is the dominant feature of the B7 phase and features a very individualised façade texture and an interesting interplay with the surrounding buildings The apartments are served by a single internal stairwell and a centrally located glass lift The stairwell enjoys sunlight from a large rooflight and several irregular windows on the lower floor levels The façade features a free vertical arrangement thanks to the proportions of windows as well as decorative lines down the full height of the walls The elevations are comprised of refined materials with interesting compositions of stone, sandstone, glass and standard coloured plaster (text from architects' website) Project is not public! m² Grupa 5 Ekopark 27
University of Warsaw Library Dobra Warsaw Once you have seen this green building, it is impossible to mistake it for another Green façades with monumental tablets illustrate mathematical formulas, sheet music and quotes from selected books in various alphabets The more than one hectare garden roof abounds in greenery Characteristic trellises for vines and creepers cover the external walls and interior of the main passage The entrance is crowned with an open book with the dictum HINC OMNIA (all from here) and tremendous columns with statues of philosophers The library consists of the front (crescent) and main buildings A glass-covered passage links both buildings, which are incorporated into a unique landscape - the space between the bank of the Vistula river and Warsaw's embankment There is no other building in containing so many direct and indirect references to the worlds of culture and nature (text from ura-murator Magazine 5/2006) m² Main designer, Landscape architect Badowski Budzynski Kowalewski Architekci Irena Bajerska Warsaw University Foundation 28
InterContinental Warszawa Emilii Plater Warsaw _glowna InterContinental Warszawa is a hotel which was completed in November 2003 At the moment, it is the tallest hotel in (164m), the third tallest in Europe, and one of the tallest 5-star hotels in the world It features 328 rooms and 11 conference rooms On the 43rd and 44th floors there is a swimming pool which is the highest indoor swimming pool in Europe The structure takes the form of a reinforced concrete monolith This gives it a massive look, and the windows are smaller than in skyscrapers of steel constructionthe reinforced concrete pillar that gives the tower its unique shape is not merely the whim of the architect - it's a creative response to the planning guidelines, ensuring daylight penetration to the housing block behind the tower InterContinental can be divided into three parts: a five-storey pedestal which corresponds in height with nearby housing blocks; then 16 stories cut away behind the pillar; and 24 square floors to the top (text from Wikipedia) Architekturbüro Tadeusz Spychala InterContinental Hotels 29
