2 photo: BRT Architekten photo: BRT Architekten Berliner Bogen Anckelmannsplatz Hamburg With the development of the offices at Berliner Bogen, building land was reclaimed within the city: build over a canal basin without noticeable use of space It spans some 140 m over a floodwater basin Supported on both banks, the arched steel trusses curve parabolically to a height of 33 metres over the canal The bridging of the waterbasin lead to the shape of the building The building geometry is used to harness regenerative energy, and so minimise energy consumption The highly demands of an office building are realised from the construction over the canalisation system, to low running costs, to the demands for a harmonic and efficient working environment and to the needs of the individual employee within his professional environment photo: BRT Architekten Project is public! m² BRT Architekten Nazar 2

3 Dockland Office Building Van-der-Smissen-Straße Hamburg At the end of Edgar-Engelhard-Kai, between the northern Elbe and the Fischereihafen, the Dockland Office Building stands like a gateway to the city of Hamburg The 'prow' of the ship-like building cantilevering for almost 40 metres, is a dynamic addition to the 'stern' of the neighbouring ferry terminal The building, supported by a steel-framed construction, contains approximately 9000 square metres of office space The depth of the building makes it possible to locate communication areas such as kitchens or conference rooms as well as archive areas and print rooms within the central zone of the building The large, open areas with freely positioned installations create a generous working atmosphere The users can savour the spectacular panoramic views over the harbour through the glazed façades (text from architect's website) Project is public! m² BRT Architekten Robert Vogel GmbH & Co KG, Hamburg pkrajewski_pl 3

4 Spiegel HQ Brooktorkai Hamburg Der Spiegel Headquarters is a 50,000 square-meter project comprised of two buildings: one for Der Spiegel and another, the Ericus-building, for other offices With its clearly readable figure each building has a reserved yet characteristic expression that provides a special significance in relation to creating identity for all the surrounding public spaces The Ericus-building will be essential for the completion of the large park space Spiegel will become the gateway to Hafencity seen from the main station and Brooktorkai The two buildings are designed as large U-forms that embrace the urban space they are directed towards They form two plazas: an arrival plaza for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers towards Brooktorkai and an open public plaza, which has a direct connection to the waterfront promenade The buildings has been nominated for a gold medal in HafenCity, which is new certification that recognizes the development of sustainable buildings in Project is public! m² Henning Larsen Robert Vogel GmbH & Co Kommanditgesellschaft og ABG Baubetreuungsgesellschaft mbh & Co KG dirkverwoerd 4

7 ADA1 An der Alster Hamburg The building site is situated at the intersection between Hamburg's lively downtown and its urban landscape rich in water and mature trees It is at the transition from city to nature, and the gateway building to the bustling metropolitan core The horizontal striped façade with its floating 'eyes' celebrates the view onto this unique context A public park in front of the building continues the design strategy of the façade into the landscape The 'eyes' in the façade and the platforms in the park form places to meet and contemplate The office spaces serve both a generic spatial layout and specific moments related to the 'eyes' Large spans provide for various office layout configurations in combination with balconies and climatically tempered outdoor spaces of the 'eyes' The office building 'An der Alster 1' links interior and exterior spaces to the public park in front of the building (text from architect's website) Public access unknown! 2007 J Mayer H Architekten Cogiton Projekt Alster GmbH pkrajewski_pl 7

9 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Chile Haus Fischertwiete Hamburg This enormous Brick Expressionist building spans a street, the Fischertwiete The building is famed for its top, which is reminiscent of a ship's prow, and the façades, which meet at a very sharp angle at the corner of the Pumpen and Niedernstrasse The best view of the building is from the east Because of the accentuated vertical elements and the recessed upper stories, as well as the curved façade on the Pumpen street, the building has, despite its enormous size, a touch of lightness It was commissioned by the shipping magnate Henry B Sloman, who made his fortune trading saltpeter from Chile, hence the name Chile House The location's close vicinity to the Elbe river necessitated a specially sealed cellar, and heating equipment was constructed in a caisson that can float within the building, so the equipment can't be damaged in the event of flooding Project is public! 1924 Fritz Höger Henry B Sloman Naomi photo: Naomi Schiphorst 9

10 Unilever Haus Strandkai Hamburg mburgopensforbusinessaspx The new Unilever headquarter building for, Austria and Switzerland is located in HafenCity Here Unilever's new building opens itself up to the city and its inhabitants The central element and heart of the design is the atrium, flooded by daylight which, on the ground floor, gives passers-by the opportunity to get to know the company better while browsing in the shop stocked with Unilever products, sitting in the café or relaxing in the spa The atrium is also the central location for people to meet and communicate Vibrant and communicative interaction evolves, thereby fostering a feeling of togetherness among the employees The workplace is no longer a separate department The building itself reinforces the identity of the company At the centre of the atrium is a glass elevator, in addition to a stairway that leads to Unilever's reception area on the second floor Project is public! 13 photo: Frankss photo: Frankss Office Boat Uferstrasse 8e Hamburg The two-story houseboat in Eilbek channel was designed by two architecture students as an office for an architect and house boat specialist The main feature was the shape of the boat, which was crucial for the choice of materials: only non-treated materials, such as oak rough sawn for flooring and natural aluminium for the façade They will over time change the appearance of the boat The deconstructive language also leads to the fact that with the exception of the floors almost no part of the boat is a flat or vertical surface photo: Frankss Project is not public! 17 Elbberg Campus Altona Große Elbstraße Hamburg Situated between warehouses, industrial buildings, and green areas, the Elbberg Campus in Hamburg's Großen Elbstraße, Altona, combines living, working and relaxation with one another The design is based upon the remains of existing buildings: newly designed offices, apartments and lofts are located within a newly designed park landscape, following the contours of the slope New footpaths, staircases and terraces connect the areas above the Altonaer Balkon, to the harbour The office building is orientated towards the public spaces: the roof of the base of the building serves as an extensive terrace, offering a wonderful view over the harbour Private and common areas within the complex are, on the one hand, clearly defined, and at the same time, harmoniously interwoven with a variety of architectural styles (text from architect's website) Public access unknown! m² BRT Architekten DWI Grundbesitz GmbH, Hamburg pkrajewski_pl 17

18 photo: blauraum architekten photo: Christian Schaulin 15 owner-occupied Flats Bogenallee Hamburg 15 owner-occupied apartments in a building on Hamburg's Bogenallee is the second project by German architects blauraum The project was born out of the conversion of a four-storey office building from the 1970s, not far from the famous Grindel tower blocks The surroundings (it is located in the middle of a block of houses and accessed via a cul-de-sac) seemed ideally suited to increase development density while the concrete skeleton of the original structure offered sufficient stability and flexibility for a complete transformation The low ceiling height (255 metres) was compensated by generous glass fronting At the rear of the building, all-round balconies were attached to the exterior Their supporting structure, a large steel framework fixed to the house (on which the self-supporting elements are hung) disappears behind the cladding material of golden brown slats that run round the whole building, creating the impression of a wooden house photo: Giovanni Castell Project is not public! 2005 blauraum architekten Cogiton-Projekt Christian_Welzbacher 18
