4 photo: Klaus Frahm photo: Klaus Frahm Side Drehbahn Hamburg Side is a 5-star hotel in Hamburg located at a very central location, between the Gänsemarkt square and the National Opera, close to the Binnenalster and only a few minutes walk from art and cultural centers as well as shopping precincts The architect Jan Störmer created a forward-looking facade featuring a combination of glass and nature stone that stretches across all 12 floors From the top 3 floors, you have a wonderful view across Hamburg This architecture is complimented by the work of designer Matteo Thun Just minimalist, reducing everything to the bare essentials, that is the fundamental idea behind the work of Matteo Thun when he decorated the public spaces The atrium-styled lobby, which stretches up to the 8th floor, lives from the illuminated installations of the New York light choreographer Robert Wilson photo: Klaus Frahm Project is public! 5 photo: Doug Snower photo: Doug Snower East Hamburg Simon-von-Utrecht Strasse Hamburg Housed in a former iron foundry, in close proximity to the world-renowned Reeperbahn, the East aims to introduce the perfect match between gastronomy, hospitality and nightlife, all organized in a donut-like plan around a three storey high restaurant with 28-foot tall doors opening onto a courtyard According to the architect, the design was inspired by the old foundry and the forms of the cast iron objects produced there, by the alloy of contemporary Eastern and Western cultures, by the memory fragments of surreal first-trips to Asia and by a deep appreciation for the Eastern recognition of a spiritual essence in nature Four gigantic pillars tower from the ground to the top floor of the former factory hall, while parts of the original foundation in exposed brick have been dramatically lit, serving as unusual divisions in the restaurant area photo: Doug Snower Project is public! 6 photo: blauraum architekten photo: Christian Schaulin 15 owner-occupied Flats Bogenallee Hamburg 15 owner-occupied apartments in a building on Hamburg's Bogenallee is the second project by German architects blauraum The project was born out of the conversion of a four-storey office building from the 1970s, not far from the famous Grindel tower blocks The surroundings (it is located in the middle of a block of houses and accessed via a cul-de-sac) seemed ideally suited to increase development density while the concrete skeleton of the original structure offered sufficient stability and flexibility for a complete transformation The low ceiling height (255 metres) was compensated by generous glass fronting At the rear of the building, all-round balconies were attached to the exterior Their supporting structure, a large steel framework fixed to the house (on which the self-supporting elements are hung) disappears behind the cladding material of golden brown slats that run round the whole building, creating the impression of a wooden house photo: Giovanni Castell Project is not public! 2005 blauraum architekten Cogiton-Projekt Christian_Welzbacher 6

25 Hamburg Music School Mittelweg Hamburg This school is divided into two main parts; a public area (coffee area, lecture rooms, etc) and the private area (classrooms, administration area), which are connected by a common entrance, that can also be used separately The café opens to the yard and a 'park' The teachers room can be connected to this café For functional and acoustical reasons, the classrooms are separated from the administration area on different floors The administrative area is situated on the ground floor, with areas for information and public relations found close to the main entrance The classrooms are on the first and second floor, in front of them there is a waiting zone 'between' the trees A construction of a series of ramps and different staircases leads from the entrance hall to the auditorium on the first floorthis link from the entrance to the second floor allows for a ceromonious procession for guests and serves as the backdrop for public addresses Public access unknown! 1997 Enric Miralles & Benedetta Tagliabue EMBT 25

27 Dockland Office Building Van-der-Smissen-Straße Hamburg At the end of Edgar-Engelhard-Kai, between the northern Elbe and the Fischereihafen, the Dockland Office Building stands like a gateway to the city of Hamburg The 'prow' of the ship-like building cantilevering for almost 40 metres, is a dynamic addition to the 'stern' of the neighbouring ferry terminal The building, supported by a steel-framed construction, contains approximately 9000 square metres of office space The depth of the building makes it possible to locate communication areas such as kitchens or conference rooms as well as archive areas and print rooms within the central zone of the building The large, open areas with freely positioned installations create a generous working atmosphere The users can savour the spectacular panoramic views over the harbour through the glazed façades (text from architect's website) Project is public! m² BRT Architekten Robert Vogel GmbH & Co KG, Hamburg 27

29 New Alster Arcades Alsterarkaden Hamburg The historic Alster Arcades in the centre of Hamburg characterises the city between the Binnenalster and the Rathausmarkt However, while the old arcade dating from the 19th Century, has lost none of it's attraction, the newer part, with it's flat-roof construction and dating from the 1960's, has neither it's loftiness or it's generosity BRT's design, dating from 1998, has adopted the grace and form of the historical buildings, without merely copying them The theme of the old arcade is reinterpreted in a modern manner Over a length of approximately 80 metres, the partially transparent roof of the New Alster Arcades drapes like a long piece of material falling towards the Alsterfleet The regular rhythm of the parabolic arches serves to connect with the massive arches of their historic counterparts (text from architect's website) Project is public! m² BRT Architekten 29
