2 SLUB Dresden Zellescher Weg Dresden The amalgamation of the various libraries in Saxony (national, federal and university) has resulted here in a library of European rank Over seven million books and data media are stored here The building itself is composed of two stone blocks of equal size that face each other across a lawn Centrally positioned between the two blocks, an area of glass that matches the floor area of either block is set flush in the lawn, forming the skylight for the central reading room below This reading room is the core of a three-storey library plinth that extends beneath the lawn across the entire area of the former sports grounds (text from architects' website) Floor area/size m² Ortner & Ortner Staatshochbauamt Dresden 2

4 Saxony City Archive Dresden Archivstrasse Dresden The competition was looking for the refurbishment and reorganization of the historic Saxon Archive building and the neighbouring office block, and a storage building as an extension The old building, built , is enhanced architecturally with a new main entrance and a festive foyer, appropriately to its importance (UNESCO: "one of the 100 most important archives in the world") The previously open inner courtyard is reinterpreted as the catalogue hall It is transformed into a roofed light-space, which means that the reduced area of the outer façades also improves the building's energy balance The compact, closed-looking new building adjacent to the office block is out of line with the street's axis and orientated to the building line in Erich-Ponto-Strasse Its large rooms are arranged around a central core On the outside, it displays a climatically advantageous heavy brick façade in Roman bond with reminiscences of historic warehouses (text from architects' website) Public access unknown! 5 Centrum Galerie Dresden Prager Straße Dresden The former GDR 'Centrum' department store was designed by Hungarian architects Ferenc Simon and Ivan Fokvari and built in 1978 It was converted to a Karstadt after the fall of Communism Karstadt later moved across the street to a new, larger building and the Centrum building was demolished in spring 2007 so a new, huge mall, 'Centrum Galerie', could be built on the site With a total retail space of m², 'Galerie' is the biggest shopping mall in Dresden The car park includes around 1000 spaces Floor area/size m² Main designer, Peter Kulka T+T Design MULTI VESTE Dresden GmbH 5
