3 photo: Ralf Buscher photo: Christian Richters Empire Riverside Hotel Bernhard-Nocht-Straße Hamburg The five star hotel and a retail and office building in Hamburg St Pauli is part of a sqm housing and office development on the former Bavaria brewery grounds The site can be regarded as an urban vacuum where new development needs to take up a mediating role between the different neighboring urban situations The 20-storey hotel complex consists of different staggered volumes, where the height of each volume corresponds with the eaves of the surrounding buildings The hotel tower with its 328 hotel rooms rises above the city, creating a new visual landmark for Hamburg s skyline From the direction of the water it appears as a slim, vertical volume, fitting into the topography of the famous Hafenkrone, the crown of the harbour, a series of impressive turn-of-the-century buildings and church spires along the embankment of the river Elbe The glass-bronze façade covers the buildings as a homogenous layer, unifying the different volumes m² Landscape designer Supplier David Chipperfield s Lützow 7 GIRA Empire Riverside GmbH & Co David_Chipperfield photo: Christian Richters Arriving at Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, main station: Either take the tramway S 1 in direction Wedel or the tramway S 3 in direction Pinneberg and get off at Landungsbrücken Exit the station on the right and follow the road in direction of Alter Elbtunnel / Fischmarkt Turn right into the Davidstraße, where in short you will find the EMPIRE RIVERSIDE HOTEL on the right hand side on the first junction 3

4 photo: Piotr Krajewski photo: Hania Danilow Philharmonic Hall Pavilion Großer Grasbrook Hamburg The Hamburg Philharmonic Hall Pavilion stands on HafenCity's central plaza, Magellanterrassen, with a direct view of the building site The Pavilion was designed by Studio Andreas Heller Here, the citizens of Hamburg and tourists from all over the world will find interesting information and insights into Hamburg Philharmonic Hall, in English as well as German With its interesting exhibition items, films and information boards, the Pavilion explains the history of the location, the architecture and the use of the building on the one hand and on the other introduces the musical tradition behind Hamburg Philharmonic Hall, the musical experience and the program The exhibition is open from 9 am through 8 pm, admission is freethe Pavilion is crowned by the 1:10 model of the Large Auditorium, which conveys a fascinating spatial impression of its unique concept The model can be inspected as part of guided tours 2008 Supplier Studio Andreas Heller ReGe Hamburg Projekt pkrajewski_pl The exhibition is open from 9 am through 8 pm, admission is free 4

5 Spiegel HQ Brooktorkai Hamburg Der Spiegel Headquarters is a 50,000 square-meter project comprised of two buildings: one for Der Spiegel and another, the Ericus-building, for other offices With its clearly readable figure each building has a reserved yet characteristic expression that provides a special significance in relation to creating identity for all the surrounding public spaces The Ericus-building will be essential for the completion of the large park space Spiegel will become the gateway to Hafencity seen from the main station and Brooktorkai The two buildings are designed as large U-forms that embrace the urban space they are directed towards They form two plazas: an arrival plaza for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers towards Brooktorkai and an open public plaza, which has a direct connection to the waterfront promenade The buildings has been nominated for a gold medal in HafenCity, which is new certification that recognizes the development of sustainable buildings in m² Henning Larsen Robert Vogel GmbH & Co Kommanditgesellschaft og ABG Baubetreuungsgesellschaft mbh & Co KG dirkverwoerd 5

6 photo: blauraum architekten photo: Christian Schaulin 15 owner-occupied Flats Bogenallee Hamburg 15 owner-occupied apartments in a building on Hamburg's Bogenallee is the second project by German architects blauraum The project was born out of the conversion of a four-storey office building from the 1970s, not far from the famous Grindel tower blocks The surroundings (it is located in the middle of a block of houses and accessed via a cul-de-sac) seemed ideally suited to increase development density while the concrete skeleton of the original structure offered sufficient stability and flexibility for a complete transformation The low ceiling height (255 metres) was compensated by generous glass fronting At the rear of the building, all-round balconies were attached to the exterior Their supporting structure, a large steel framework fixed to the house (on which the self-supporting elements are hung) disappears behind the cladding material of golden brown slats that run round the whole building, creating the impression of a wooden house photo: Giovanni Castell Project is not public! 2005 blauraum architekten Cogiton-Projekt Christian_Welzbacher 6
