5 photo: Mieke Vullings photo: Mieke Vullings El Mirador de Sanchinarro Calle Princesa de Éboli Madrid Spain This 22 level building, called Mirador, is located in Sanchinarro, a residential suburb on the north east edge of Madrid surrounded by highways and with views towards the Guadarrama Mountains The most impressive element of the building is the incredible gap of it shape, which acts as a frame for the distant landscape The large communal plaza and lookout at 40 m above the ground is meant to be used by the neighborhood as a meeting area and playground The Mirador contains a wide variety of compact housing types, in total 156 units The architects created a distinctive silhouette by grouping nine blocks The articulation of these blocks is apparent in the exterior palette, equal parts stone, concrete and tile The strips of red indicate the corridors The way the nine blocks are stacked and glued together, they make up a new towering impressive 'superblock' () Blanca Lleó asociados from Madrid were responsible for directing the works Project is not public! 10 photo: Maarten Scheurwater photo: Dirk Verwoerd Tarra Tower Busplein KV Almere A combination of companies in the Real Estate Sector wanted a tower in the centre of Almere that expresses the characteristics of the sector: a combination of introverted solidity and flamboyant communication The majority of the activities demand an enclosed and intimate environment The nine floors are kept empty, maximizing usage being a chief concern of the sector, and are surrounded by a concrete façade with small windows that allow for light and privacy and avoid the need for air conditioning It is an economic solution (text from architect's website) Public access unknown! 11 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott Parkrand Dr Colijnstraat CP Amsterdam The neighbourhood Geuzenveld is located in the western garden cities of Amsterdam There is plenty of public space available but most of these green spaces lack grandeur The project is regarded to be a 'key-operation within the urban renewal of Geuzeveld-Slotermeer The building should provide an iconographic quality to the neighbourhood which it was lacking before The housing block is situated at the edge of a park and consists out of 5 towers, positioned on a deck, carrying a two level roof plate The positioning of the towers provides a clear view from all apartments to the park Because of the holes, or empty spaces in-between, the dwellings behind the big block also still have a view on the park The title of the project - Parkrand means park-edge photo: Bjorn Utpott Project is not public! 12 photo: João Morgado photo: João Morgado Waterwijk Ypenburg Stiemensvaart ZE Den Haag Hagen Island offers an attractive image, for consumption by a broad range of people Clearly, the project does not aspire to appeal to just an elite group of artistic souls 'receptive' to such housing Almost half the houses are for the rental sector, while the rest are for sale at prices of between 35 and 55 million guilders One section of the neighbourhood is now inhabited and signs of domesticity are already visible - flower pots, paved paths, lace decorations styling, it would seem, has not influenced residents' preferences The large sliding glass doors on each floor reveal the interiors ranging from curving plastic bedroom kitsch to Scandinavian timber cosiness The greatest quality of these houses is just how smoothly they accommodate the everyday Personal touches do not detract from the overall picture, as so often happens with housing schemes that aspire to the title ure photo: Rositsa Andreeva Project is not public! 13 photo: Courtesy photo: Courtesy Didden Village Beatrijsstraat RC Rotterdam The first realization in 's home town Rotterdam is a rooftop house extension On top of an existing monumental house and atelier, the bedrooms are positioned as separate houses, optimizing the privacy of every member of the family The houses are distributed in such a way that a series of plazas, streets and alleys appear as a mini-village on top of the building Parapet walls with windows surround the new village Trees, tables, open-air showers and benches are added, optimizing the rooftop life By finishing all elements with a blue poly-urethane coating a new 'heaven' appears It creates a crown on top of the monument The addition can be seen as a prototype for a further densification of the old and existing city It adds a roof life to the city It explores the costs for the beams, infrastructure, and extra finishes, and it ultimately aims to be lower than the equivalent ground price photo: Courtesy Project is not public! 14 photo: Jacob Gallt photo: Jacob Gallt Frøsilos Islands Brygge Copenhagen Denmark 'Unusual yet obvious' is the best way to describe 's conversion of two grain silos on the harbour front of Copenhagen into high-end housing for the fortunate few The brief suggested filling up the circular silo spaces with apartment floors chose to go the other way about the task and hang the apartments on the outside of the silo walls as a second skin of glass, creating very light and almost outdoor living spaces The silo interiors remain as an industrial version of the atrium, roofed with translucent plastic A prime motivation for this inside-out solution was the relative fragility of the old silo walls regarded the structural weakness of the concrete tubes as a serious limitation because it made it difficult to cut large holes in the walls for windows, without endangering the structural integrity The 84 apartments now range from around 90 to 200 square metres and the balconies add roughly one third to that as outdoor living space photo: Jacob Gallt Public access unknown! 2005 NCC Rasmus_Rune_Nielsen 14

18 photo: photo: Anyang Peak Manan-gu Anyang 2-dong Seoksu 1(il)-dong South Korea In the mountains next to Anyang, a city in South-Korea, a theme park is developed that stresses the beauty of the site through a series of artistic interventions Anyang Resort Park was a booming location in the 1970s and 80s, but became redundant during the past decade because it couldn t follow up the changes in society One way to revitalize this area is to mobilize its the natural wonders, intensifying nature The path leading up the hill, an essential element of the park, is used as a tool to generate this idea The spiral path transforms into the tower, extending the hill seamlessly, reshaping the peak Two contour lines from the top are used to give form to the path in the new peak, forming an outer and inner spiral The peak s void creates a pavilion; it could hold a small exhibition or installation The space can also be used for performances, allowing visitors to look down on the stage from the top of the hill The path encircling the peak turns it into a destination Project is public! 2005 photo: 18

25 photo: Aemelie Deelder photo: Roderick Trompert BK City Faculty of ure Julianalaan BL Delft f a472&lang=nl A fire at the TU Delft Faculty of ure on 13 May 2008 led to a new and challenging task: transforming a former public building into a temporary new building for the Faculty of ure Braaksma & Roos created a transformatory concept for this plan Within only a few months the entire building was renovated and prepared for education Several parties were invited to collaborate and design parts of the building Fokkema en was responsible at BK City for the programming, design of offices and student workshops, the library and signposting KossmandeJong made the design of the general spaces in BK City Special areas such as the 'Ketelhuis' restaurant and the interior 'street' with public areas have been designed on the principle that the experience is paramount Other parties include Octatube (two glazed atriums), 2012 s (Espressobar), (orange tribune), Richard Hutten and Vitra (most furniture in the building) photo: Roderick Trompert Project is public!
