2 photo: John Lewis Marshall photo: John Lewis Marshall Folding Walls Rembrandt van Rijnstraat PH Groningen Within an enclosed intimate urban courtyard, near the city centre and in front of a small green area, these freestanding patio-villas have been built The folding walls-setup' colonizes the space between built elements, gardens and nature A wooden wall folds itself to define the villas, the patios, the gardens and the urban elements, enclosing different spaces with different "atmospheres" The double height living room can be completely opened towards the patio and the garden, and becomes part of the outside landscape photo: Ger van der Vlugt Project is not public! 3 photo: Wall House photo: Wall House Wall House A J Lutulistraat WT Groningen Originally designed in 1973 for Ed Bye, in Ridgefield, Connecticut USA, for a long time it only existed as a concept until Groningen decided to actually build the house Designed to place living in the context of time by means of a Wall which symbolizes the physical transition from past to future through the present, a transition between back and front, closed and open The Wall, one-and-a-half m thick, forms the basis of the house The entrance and living elements literally hang from it To reinforce this idea, a narrow gap is left between the Wall and the elements Hence the Wall is not directly manifest in the interior but can only be perceived visually It is a theoretical house, based on the idea of the physical confrontation between space and time, elaborated in separate elements It is a museological manifestation of an important architectural concept Although it wasn't designed for this particular site, it does enter into a dialogue with its 'everyday' surroundings photo: Wall House Floor area/size m² Contractor John Hejduk BAM Wilma bv Municipality of Groningen MI_MOA Please visit to see what days the house is open for the public From Groningen Central Station take bus 6, direction "Hoornse Meer Wijk" Get out at the lake (it's best if you tell/ask the bus driver) Then walk alongside the shore of the lake heading south until you see the Wall House at your right hand 3

4 Lighthouses Rabenhauptstraat CB Groningen The lighthouse is a compact, urban apartment of 50 m2 that can be placed on top of parkings, warehouses, schools or other houses It's a minitower existing out of 3 stacked prefabricated modules, with a maximum height of 9 m The first module has an open construction to provide a large open roof terrace of 15 m2 underneath the apartment, next to the entrance The first 4 lighthouses have been realized in the centre of Groningen, on top of a bakery near Central Station The municipality supported the project and provides a perfect solution to a rising need for apartments in congested urban areas The light weight wooden prefabricated construction allows to be built on top of existing structures; it weights kg Providing a good roof structure by the host, the house can be put up in only one day The eventual costs of a Lighthouse depends on the amount ordered, the material costs, costs for the location and installation costs to connect it to sewage and existing structure Project is not public! 5 Two Apartments Lutkenieuwstraat AW Groningen The Municipality of Groningen invited the Japanese architect Toyo Ito to develop a framework for the cultural manifestation Blue Moon He worked together with four architects: Space Group, Xaveer de Geyter, Foreign Office s and Tony Fretton Each of them drew up two designs; one for the Europapark (a former industrial site) and one for the inner city of Groningen, all based on Ito's masterplan In this context London-based architect Tony Fretton has built two apartments on a very small building plot The hall opens up to the street and gives access to both houses The entire building has 5 stories and is constructed in a straightforward and standard way, related to its urban surroundings by the simple gestures of setting the building back and making the top floor transparent, creating grand views The building is intended to nestle into the fabric of the city inconspicuously, throwing into visibility through reflective glazing, the simple incidental events of the street Project is not public! 2001 Tony Fretton Municipality of Groningen Berend_Schiphorst From trainstation Groningen, take bus 3, 5 or 15 to A-kerk Then walk north 50 meters 5

6 Self Referential House Prinsenstraat CL Groningen The Municipality of Groningen invited the Japanese architect Toyo Ito to develop a framework for the cultural manifestation Blue Moon He worked together with four architects: Space Group, Xaveer de Geyter, Foreign Office s and Tony Fretton Each of them drew up two designs; one for the Europapark (a former industrial site) and one for the inner city of Groningen, all based on Ito's master plan In the context of this manifestation the Norwegian-based Space Group designed a building to house a day-care centre (on the first floor) and urban private dwelling (ground floor) and 70m2 roof terrace with pool The front façade is made out of glass with half transparent textile screens, which make the building look open and closed at the same time Project is not public! 7 Pavilion Schuiten- schuiverskwartier Schuitendiep RH Groningen The Municipality of Groningen invited the Japanese architect Toyo Ito to develop a framework for the cultural manifestation Blue Moon He worked together with four architects: Space Group, Xaveer de Geyter, Foreign Office s and Tony Fretton Each of them drew up two designs; one for the Europapark (a former industrial site) and one for the inner city of Groningen, all based on Ito's master plan In the context of this manifestation the English Foreign Office s made a 4 story high building with a façade that could be opened and closed like sleeping bag, with a zipper It is a steal-framed structure with a skin of perforated steel plates These can be opened The building changes from a fully closed massive column into a light and open structure Inside is a restaurant and two apartments Foreign Office s Municipality of Groningen Berend_Schiphorst 7

8 Uurwerkersgang Uurwerkersgang EJ Groningen The Municipality of Groningen invited the Japanese architect Toyo Ito to develop a framework for the cultural manifestation Blue Moon He worked together with 4 architects: Space Group, Xaveer de Geyter, Foreign Office s and Tony Fretton Each of them drew up two designs; one for the Europapark (a former industrial site) and one for the inner city of Groningen, all based on Ito's master plan In the context of this manifestation the Uurwerkersgang-project was a collaboration between Toyo Ito and Hiromi Hosoya / Hosoya Schaefer s, Zürich It was built as a guesthouse for the University of Groningen The ground floor remains free for semi-public functions such as a gallery The site is located at a narrow alley next to an existing brick building formerly used as a library The new building facade is made from aluminum bricks It is blending in with the brick façades along the alley and at the same time defines a new, light and transparent counterpoint on the old street Main designer, Toyo Ito Hosoya Schaefer s Rijksuniversiteit Groningen Berend_Schiphorst 8

9 photo: Peter Tahl photo: Peter Tahl Groninger Museum Museumeiland ME Groningen The new Groninger Museum is not merely a casing for art, it is a work of art in itself, a principle that is occurring to an increasing extent in contemporary (museum) architecture It is an artwork in the centre of the city, traversed by public space where passers-by are directly confronted by all kinds of works of art Right from the outset, it was certain that it would be designed by several architects Mendini chose designers and architects for this purpose When the definitive selection was presented, an announcement was made, stating they had been chosen 'because we believe that, in the next decade, artistic research will be more up-to-date and qualifying than academic architecture, which is in a declining phase All of its shapes, layouts and choice of materials and colors refer to an idea related to this statement For instance the idea of going down the main spiral staircase, not upstairs as in traditional museums (to 'exalted' art) See the website for more explanation photo: Ralph Richter Main designer, Alessandro Mendini Coop Himmelb(l)au Michele de Lucchi Philippe Starck Groninger Museum MI_MOA tuesday - sunday: 10:00-17:00 The museum is directly opposite of the Central Station in Groningen 9

11 Home Built Zuiderdiep Gedempte Zuiderdiep HM Groningen Since 1998 owner/inhabitant/builder Hoogland and Versteegh have been building on this exceptional house and atelier Maybe it will never finish: it's a project -or better- a concept in time and space In 1997 DAAD architects was asked to draw a simple plan From inside to out: a wooden container for living space, a heavy steel construction with room for stairs, toilet, plants and corridor, all covered in glass the summer skin can be fully opened This very preliminary plan was approved by the municipality as an experiment and adventure Local building regulations are constantly checked upon and the architect, who had to let go his strong architectural concept, also comes to review the process regularly All details and problems are examined, solved and fixed on the spot This process of trial and error will probably never finish The estimated completion date in 2015, stated in this publication is actually irrelevant The factor time is essential for the plan to succeed photo: Dirk Verwoerd Project is not public! 2015 Contractor Daad en Wouter Hoogland & Hannah Versteegh Wouter Hoogland & Hannah Versteegh Berend_Schiphorst 11

12 photo: Christian Richters photo: Christian Richters Leon van Gelder Diamantlaan BA Groningen The Leon van Gelderschool provides a four-year curriculum for 12-year-olds who have completed primary education The vital requisite of a safe environment is visualized in a building that rhythmically rolls and unrolls A the very spot where once stood a vandalised school, now there s a natural school that is the talk of the district screened off from the bustle of the world, open towards people An elevated schoolyard lifts the students above the commonplace Boundaries between floors, walls and ceilings are not clearly defined A state of freedom which will allow the students to blossom To children at a stage in life when they are continually asking Why? and everything is unsettled, the school building s reply is one of individuality, intimacy and originality photo: Christian Richters Project is not public! 13 photo: João Morgado photo: João Morgado Ciboga Terrain Bloemsingel BZ Groningen The urban concept developed by the municipality extends the network of routes and views through the site The municipality's desire to establish 'openness' through an equal relationship between landscape and building was central to the success of the plan However this ambition had to be negotiated with the market requirements for programmatic density This led the municipality to create the concept of 'schotsen' A 'schots' is considered a compact building block eroded internally by new forms of semi-public space Thirteen 'schotsen' are distributed across the site in an open landscape that operates as a filter zone between the city centre and 19th century housing extensions S333 have developed Schots 1 and 2, which forms a strategic link in the city's ecological corridor linking the canal with an existing urban park, as the first phase of the project on the original Europan 3 site photo: João Morgado Project is not public! 16 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd Educational Building UMCG Antonius Deusinglaan Groningen The new extension of the faculty of Medical Sciences is squeezed between a listed 19th century building and high-rise dating from the 1960s, all part of the University of Groningen It s also bordered by the new building for UN animal testing laboratories (by UN Studio) and extends from the newly emerging university plaza to the edge of the campus, which borders the inner city, creating a new portal between the town and the university grounds It houses the Orthopaedic Institute for Joint and Movement Studies with a main lecture hall and a large foyer connecting the institute s existing rooms It therefore has a joining function in urban and programmatic terms as well Some 1300 bicycles can be parked on the ground floor and the 3 upper storeys are used for teaching and research In the foyer a concrete wall rises to the highest point of the giant lecture hall This wall, Chromosome Technology in Concrete Relief, was designed in collaboration with artist Baukje Trenning photo: Bjorn Utpott Floor area/size m² Services engineer Artist Building physics consultant Contractor RAU ABT Baukje Trenning DGMR Heijmans Rijksuniversiteit Groningen RAU Busses 3 and 6 pass the building 16

17 photo: Jeroen Meijer photo: Jeroen Meijer Video Bus Stop Emmaplein Groningen The Video Bus Stop is an asymmetrical composition of glass, marble and corrugated steel, that protects the commuters with a red velvet curtain 'against the elements', which provides a stark contrast with the constant circulation of buses The shelter's asymmetrical orientation aims at amplifying the effect of two identical objects facing each other The use of real marble on the wall creates an impossible dignified abris - like Mies van der Rohe meets Decaux The only sign of 'vulgarity' are the different video programmes projected on the marble surface with 3D metal letters on the outside Discreet holes on the sides of the marble walls provide for discreet sound The project was part of the exhibition 'What A wonderful World' that took place in Groningen in 1991 (text from architect's website) 1989 OMA - Rem Koolhaas jpmm photo: Jeroen Meijer By bus, or a five minute walk from the station 17
