7 Itroductio The Career Developmet Itership (CDI) credit provides studets with the opportuity to ear up to 2.0 high school credit(s) for a upaid itership. The CDI credit optio is iteded to recogize ad ecourage the skills developmet ad experiece studets acquire through iterships. Career Developmet Itership Guidelies is iteded to help educators (teachers/cdi facilitators) oversee the plaig, moitorig, evaluatig, ad reportig of studet experieces related to the CDI. The guidelies also provide iformatio for those i the key role of o-site itership supervisor. O-site itership supervisors are workplace employees who are resposible for welcomig ad supportig the studet throughout the itership. Career Developmet Itership Guidelies is ot a curriculum documet. It provides guidelies for those wishig to offer studets a erichig opportuity to ear a credit through a career developmet itership. Required documets ad forms to implemet the CDI credit (as outlied o page 10 of this documet) ad suggested support documets, such as learig goals ad assessmet guidelies, are posted at mb.ca/k12/cur/cardev/. Purpose The purpose of the CDI guidelies is to offer ratioale for providig the CDI optio defie the objectives to be achieved by erollig studets i a CDI specify the roles ad resposibilities of studets, schools, teachers/cdi facilitators, o-site itership supervisors, ad Maitoba Educatio ad Traiig as they relate to the CDI specify CDI requiremets with respect to registratio procedures the Seior Years credit system graduatio requiremets Seior Years course desigatio reportig of CDI credits Career Developmet Itership Guidelies 1
8 Ratioale The CDI offers studets who are a miimum of 16 years of age the opportuity to participate i a itership placemet, allowig them to ear a high-school credit while explorig their career iterests. Itership credits itegrate career developmet theory, kowledge, essetial skills, employability skills, ad attitudes with meaigful learig experieces i a itership settig. The kowledge, skills, ad attitudes acquired through iterships ca icrease studets competece ad cofidece, ad provide more awareess of the expectatios of a professio ad the employmet opportuities that exist i their commuity, as well as the educatioal ad traiig requiremets for these opportuities. Maitoba Educatio ad Traiig ecourages schools to frame the itership experiece so that the studets beefit. To this ed, a detailed list of suggested learig goals (as well as umerous other useful resources) is provided at the followig Maitoba Educatio ad Traiig web page: Iterships that are closely aliged to studets particular professios of iterest will give them the opportuity to apply ad refie the kowledge ad skills acquired i their academic programmes ad Career Developmet Life/Work courses. Studets who have successfully completed the prerequisite of a Career Developmet Life/Work full (1.0) or half-credit (0.5) course will be able to complemet their self-maagemet, career awareess, ad itership readiess with a CDI. Cosideratios for Placig Studets i a CDI Prior to placig a studet ito a authetic career developmet itership, it is expected that teachers/cdi facilitators will take ito cosideratio whether the itership placemet matches the studet s iterests, abilities, ad career aspiratios the studet is adequately prepared to participate i a commuity-based itership the studet has adequate kowledge ad uderstadig of the placemet before begiig the itership the studet is aware of the behavioural expectatios at the itership site, attedace requiremets, ad the suggested learig goals for successful completio of the CDI credit(s) 2 Career Developmet Itership Guidelies
9 Examples of acceptable iterships iclude the followig: Hads-o experiece at a itership site (e.g., busiess, govermet, ot-for-profit, or voluteer orgaizatio) Job shadowig a worker at a itership site Career metorig with a worker at a itership site Career simulatio activities at a commuity site for occupatios where hads-o itership experiece is ot appropriate I certai circumstaces, a CDI credit may be eared for itership placemets o the school s premises if that itership experiece presets the studet with future opportuities related to his or her career aspiratios. Activities that are extesios of i-school courses or that are extracurricular activities (e.g., makig dramatic presetatios, workig o the school yearbook, or servig o studet coucil) are ot cosidered acceptable itership placemets. Placig studets ito career developmet iterships with their parets or other relatives is geerally ot recommeded, as the studets are likely to gai more beefit from meetig challeges i ew eviromets ad with ew people. All school divisios are ecouraged to establish procedures for locatig ad assessig potetial itership placemet sites. Before each CDI placemet, the teacher/cdi facilitator must visit the studet s placemet site ad assess it with regard to the followig Safety Assessmet Questios: Safety Assessmet Questios q q q q q q q Does the o-site itership supervisor have a positive attitude ad a commitmet to the provisio of experietial learig opportuities? Are there opportuities for studets to develop ad maitai a oeo-oe relatioship with a o-site itership supervisor? Are the techology, equipmet, ad facilities provided at the placemet acceptable ad appropriate for the studet s eeds? Are there appropriate health ad safety coditios at the itership site, i accordace with guidelies provided by SAFE Work Maitoba? Is the o-site itership supervisor dedicated to providig a safe ad respectful work eviromet? Is the o-site supervisor able ad willig to provide ay ecessary accommodatios for studets with special eeds? 10 Because iterships are meat to be i-depth ad meaigful experieces, a CDI ormally ivolves oe placemet. I some cases, however, two differet placemets may be appropriate. Decisios regardig the umber of placemets i which a studet will participate should be made at the idividual school level ad should cosider the umber ad variety of placemets available i the commuity, the breadth ad depth of experiece afforded by the available placemets, as well as the studet s evolvig eeds ad iterests. Withdrawal from the CDI is possible at ay time ad for ay reaso, icludig the reaso that the CDI itership site coditios are ot acceptable to the studet, her or his paret/guardia, the teacher/cdi facilitator, or the o-site itership supervisor. Defiitio of Objectives CDI provides studets with the opportuity to lear about the importace of commuicatig ad collaboratig effectively with others about work eviromets, workplace practices, labour market iformatio, curret/ developig workplace treds, ad their chose career iterest or pathway how to process ad itegrate feedback obtaied from o-site itership supervisors ad teachers/cdi facilitators, ad how to evaluate their ow performace how to employ reflectio i a experietial learig eviromet about educatio ad traiig requiremets for occupatios ad career pathways that alig with their career aspiratios about post-secodary parters expectatios (e.g., uiversities, colleges, trade associatios, ad/or workplace represetatives) CDI provides studets with the opportuity to develop competece, cofidece, ad a willigess to take iitiative a foudatio of employability by the acquiremet of trasferable skills, which CDI helps them idetify ad which may be expected i professios ad worksites that alig with their career aspiratios a workplace safety ad health midset based o the priciples ad directio provided by SAFE Work Maitoba, emphasizig the importace of ijury prevetio at the workplace relatioships with o-site itership supervisors that may support studets i avigatig their future career pathways 4 Career Developmet Itership Guidelies
11 CDI provides studets with the opportuity to uderstad workers rights ad resposibilities the similarities ad differeces i behavioural expectatios betwee school ad the workplace how what they lear i the classroom is related to the kowledge, skills, ad attitudes eeded i the workplace CDI provides studets with the opportuity to reflect upo their career itership experieces ad career aspiratios Course Desigatio The credit(s) for CDI will be desigated as Geeral (G) credits ad reported as such. Schools will record the Grade 11 oe-half (0.5) credit as 35G or the full (1.0) credit as 30G usig the code 0305, as provided by the Departmet of Educatio ad Traiig for reportig the credit record the Grade 12 oe-half (0.5) credit as 45G or the full (1.0) credit as 40G usig the code 0305 Reportig CDI Credits School admiistrators must report CDI credits as Complete (CO) or Icomplete (IN) to Maitoba Educatio ad Traiig, Professioal Certificatio ad Studet Records Uit, at Number of CDI Credits Allowed The Career Developmet Life/Work courses provide a foudatio for studets that will help prepare them for participatio i the CDI credit. The maximum umber of CDI credits allowable i the calculatio of a studet s Seior Years graduatio credit requiremets is two (2.0). A studet may ear oe (1.0) full credit by udertakig ad successfully completig a CDI for 110 hours (a maximum of 10 hours of itership preparatio ad reflectio ad 100 hours of itership). A studet may ear oe-half (0.5) credit by udertakig ad successfully completig a CDI for 55 hours (a maximum of 10 hours of itership preparatio ad reflectio ad 45 hours of itership). 12 A studet may ear either the 30G credit (1.0) or the 35G half-credit (0.5), but ot both. A studet may also ear either the 40G credit (1.0) or the 45G half-credit (0.5), but ot both. CDI Graduatio Requiremets CDIs are optioal credits that studets may choose ad apply toward Seior Years graduatio requiremets. 13 Roles ad Resposibilities Career developmet iterships require effective commuicatio ad collaboratio amog admiistrators, teachers/cdi facilitators, o-site itership supervisors, ad Maitoba Educatio ad Traiig. A explaatio of the roles ad resposibilities of each of the parters is provided. Admiistrators I order to provide the opportuity for studets to receive CDI credits, admiistrators will ivite commuity parters to provide a variety of career exploratio activities for their studets esure that teachers/cdi facilitators are aware that, before a itership begis, Work Placemet Registratio forms for Workers Compesatio coverage must be completed for studets participatig i a CDI support teachers/cdi facilitators as they establish, orgaize, moitor, ad evaluate the CDI credits by providig opportuities to visit studets at the itership placemet facilitatig the acquisitio of the material resources eeded to provide meaigful CDI experieces providig opportuities to liaise ad etwork with existig ad ew itership sites/employers iform school/educatioal commuities about the CDI optio cotiue to support staff ad studets throughout the CDI process Allocatio of Teacher/CDI Facilitators ad Timetablig Admiistrators should be aware that iterships make uique demads o a teacher/ CDI facilitator`s time, sice most itership learig time takes place i the commuity. Admiistrators should cosider the eed to provide time i teacher/cdi facilitator timetables before, durig, ad at the ed of each CDI so that they are able to visit ad assess potetial placemet sites secure placemets prepare studets for their iterships commuicate with studets ad o-site itership supervisors durig iterships, esurig that agreed-upo learig goals are met coduct assessmets of studet performace ad achievemet Career Developmet Itership Guidelies 7
14 Teachers/CDI Facilitators To support the implemetatio of the CDI credit, the followig Maitoba Educatio ad Traiig website icludes a umber of resources for teachers/cdi facilitators, icludig required ad suggested documets ad forms: Teachers/CDI facilitators assiged by the school are resposible for esurig that a studet is a miimum of 16 years of age, is eligible to participate i a CDI credit, ad has completed a miimum of a half-credit (0.5) Career Developmet Life/Work course prior to registerig for the CDI coordiatig all aspects of the CDI before, durig, ad after the CDI is completed (They should provide studets with 10 hours of preparatio ad reflectio as part of the CDI experiece.) supportig ad assistig the o-site itership supervisor so that she or he uderstads the itet of the CDI learig opportuities ad experiece (Teachers/ CDI facilitators ad o-site itership supervisors ca ehace studets learig, egagemet, employability, ad essetial skill developmet durig the itership.) O-Site Placemet ad Safety Assessmet Prior to the start of the studet s itership placemet, the teacher/cdi facilitator must visit ad assess each itership placemet site, takig ito cosideratio the Safety Assessmet Questios provided o page 3 of this documet: Whe a placemet site that has already bee assessed is uder cosideratio for a itership placemet for aother studet, the teacher/cdi facilitator must reassess it to esure that it cotiues to meet the criteria. I additio, teachers/cdi facilitators should help studets uderstad the purpose ad itet of the CDI by discussig its goals, establishig a structure for future meetigs, ad explaiig what the studets might expect from the CDI clarify ad assess their career goals as well as learig goals specifically related to the studet s CDI lik the importace of applyig all classroom learig to workplace situatios, tasks, ad activities develop strategies to process ad beefit from costructive criticism ad feedback uderstad ad reflect to facilitate their learig explore their career iterests ad desired itership placemet uderstad the Maitoba Workplace Safety ad Health Act ad Regulatio, as well as all relevat rights ad issues cocerig workplace safety 8 Career Developmet Itership Guidelies

This documet directs teachers/cdi facilitators to complete or oversee the completio of several required forms ad documets before ad after the itership. Suggested resources, forms, ad documets have also bee prepared to assist teachers/cdi facilitators to develop a CDI establish learig goals promote, moitor, assess, ad report o a studet i a CDI placemet By completig the required forms ad documets, ad by usig ad adaptig the suggested forms ad documets, teachers/cdi facilitators will be able to successfully ad resposibly coordiate the CDI. The title of each item is followed by a bracketed letter ad umber, such as (A1). Forms ad documets followed by the letter A should be completed before the itership. 17 Suggested Learig Goals ad Assessmet Guidelies CDI studet learig goals ad assessmet guidelies may be desiged by the school to help studets recogize ad develop their stregths, iterests, career aspiratios, essetial skills, employability skills, ad trasferable skills with respect to expectatios of the itership experiece relevat hads-o learig or exposure to a authetic work eviromet icrease their kowledge regardig educatioal ad career/life opportuities use feedback from the o-site itership supervisor to assess ad build o their workplace skills use kowledge about their experietial learig opportuity to reflect o the world of work, lifelog learig, ad their career ad trasitioal plaig Schools have flexibility i determiig how delivery ad assessmet of the CDI ca best take place. The majority of the time allotted to the CDI takes place at itership sites. This may iclude time spet at the site i the eveig, o weekeds, durig holiday breaks, ad summer. Schools are expected to prepare the studets before the itership, be available durig the itership, ad evaluate ad assess studet performace ad learig durig ad after the itership. Teachers eed to make special arragemets if they have a studet who requires Workers Compesatio coverage durig the summer. They eed to prepare a letter for the studet ad employer providig iformatio about whom to cotact if there is a icidet at the work placemet site. 18 O-Site Itership Supervisors To participate i a CDI, o-site itership supervisors must commuicate with the teacher/cdi facilitators before the studet begis loggig hours for CDI credit.
