This moth studets will focus o becomig familiar with the rules ad routies of the classroom, orietig themselves to Big School, makig ew frieds, ad recogizig the importat ad special qualities of everyoe i our kidergarte class. Over the ext several weeks, your child will be ivolved i a umber of activities, icludig: orderig the studets i the class by height sequecig a Day i the Life of a Kidergarte Studet creatig a classroom Birthday Bulleti Board sortig items i treasure boxes, with a fried playig coutig, matchig, ad memory games creatig simple patters, usig studet participatio creatig a I Am Special book that studets ca read by themselves discussig feeligs about his/her first day of kidergarte creatig a class Big Book about why every studet i the class is special recitig poems ad sogs The classroom cetres are filled with a variety of excitig activities. For example, studets ca ivestigate figer-prits usig a magifyig glass at the Discovery Cetre; create a selfportrait at the Arts & Crafts Cetre; match pictures with the ames of the ew frieds i our class at the Writig/Laguage Cetre; create a three-dimesioal ame card usig beas, sequis, ad macaroi; sped some quiet time at the Readig Cetre surrouded by books about growth, self-esteem, ad feeligs; ad more! Your child will be brigig home his/her Watch Me Read Duo-tag at the ed of each week. Do t forget to review the poem ad complete the home-school coectio activity with your child. Duo-tags must come back at the begiig of each week so that we ca add our ew poem. I the ext few weeks, the first of our class Big Books will be circulatig throughout our kidergarte homes. 5 Focus Alterate methods of sortig studets for same-sex classes iclude: clothig, style of shoe, height, hair ad eye colour, glasses, ad umber of brothers ad sisters. Mathematics LESSON 1 The studets will be sorted ito differet groups based o a variety of differet attributes (e.g., by sex, by age, by hair colour) chose by themselves ad the teacher. Teachig the lesso 1. Have the studets sit i a large circle. Tell the studets that you are goig to eed their help sortig everyoe i the class ito differet groups. While you are sortig the studets, it is their job to use their detective eyes to fid out how they are beig sorted. However, they caot reveal the sortig rule util you have fiished placig everyoe i a group. Sort the studets ito two groups by sex (boys ad girls). Oce you have fiished sortig the studets, ask the studets: How did I sort the studets i the class? 2. Tell the studets that you are goig to sort them aother way. Agai, it is their job to use their detective eyes to fid out how they are beig sorted. Sort the studets ito differet groups based o hair colour (e.g., brow, black, blod, red). Whe the studets have bee sorted, ask: How did I sort the studets this time? 3. Tell the studets that you are goig to sort them oe last time. They are really goig to have to use their detective eyes, because you are goig to make this oe tricky. Sort the studets based o their shoes. Place all the studets who are wearig ruig shoes i oe group, ad all the studets who are ot wearig ruig shoes i aother group. After the studets have bee sorted, ask: Who ca tell me how I sorted you this time? Kidergarte Plus!

6 4. After the studets have determied the fial sortig rule, have them sit i a group close to the chart paper. At the top of the chart paper, record the title, Look How We Sorted the Frieds i My Class. Poit to each word as you read the title aloud. The, ask the studets: Who remembers the very first way I sorted the studets i our class? Record the first sortig rule o chart paper (boys ad girls). The, ask: Who ca remember the secod way I sorted the studets i our class? Record the secod sortig rule o chart paper (hair colour). Fially, ask: Who ca remember the last way I sorted the studets i our class? Record the fial sortig rule o chart paper (type of shoe: ruig shoes/o ruig shoes). Reread the three sortig rules to the studets. Explai to the studets that the way we sort thigs (i this case, people) is called a sortig rule. Ask the studets to repeat the words sortig rule after you. Oce agai, clarify that a sortig rule is the way i which items/people i a group are sorted. 5. Ask the studets: I what other ways could we sort the studets i our class? (Some possible aswers: by age, eye colour, glasses/o glasses) Record the studets suggestios o chart paper. Draw a picture clue beside each suggestio to assist the studets i recallig the rule. Also, record the ame of the studet who suggested the sortig rule. Select oe of the sortig rules suggested by the studets, ad sort the studets based o the sortig rule. Oce the class has bee sorted, ask the studet who provided the sortig rule: What was your sortig rule? Has everyoe i our class bee sorted accordig to your sortig rule? 6. Sort the studets a umber of times, usig the sortig rules suggested by the studets. Follow-up Studet Activity 1. Distribute a copy of the activity sheet Look How We Sorted the Frieds i My Class (blm 1.1.1) to each studet. 2. Have the studets draw a picture of oe way i which the studets i the class were sorted. 3. Oce the picture is completed, have the studet describe the sortig rule to a adult (e.g., teacher or paret-voluteer). If the studets have difficulty determiig the third sortig rule, provide a clue; for example: I sorted you ito groups based o somethig you are wearig. Look closely at what you are wearig. 7 Extedig the Idea Ask questios about the groups of studets after they have bee sorted. For example, ask: Are there more girls or more boys i our class? How may studets are three years old, four years old, five years old? Are there more four-year-olds or five-year-olds i our class? Provide various maipulatives i the classroom for studets to sort (e.g., likig cubes, buttos, coloured teddy bear couters). Studet Assessmet Review the activity sheet completed by the studets to determie if they were able to commuicate oe of the sortig rules used durig the activity.
