3 SECTION A: INTRODUCTION Programs ad services provided by the Divisio of Studet Affairs are a direct extesio of DePaul Uiversity s missio to emphasize skills ad attitudes that educate studets to be lifelog, idepedet learers. Studet Affairs cotributes to the DePaul Studet Experiece by cultivatig learig opportuities that ispire studets to explore their persoal idetities, faiths, values ad roles i a multicultural world. Through the divisio s diverse offerigs of programs, leadership opportuities ad quality support services, Studet Affairs seeks to create a eviromet that fosters studets overall developmet ad removes barriers to eable studets to reach their highest potetial. I. Missio Statemet Achored by the uiversity s Catholic, Vicetia ad urba missio, Studet Affairs educators facilitate studets trasformative learig through studet developmet, advocacy ad the promotio of diversity ad social justice. The Divisio of Studet Affairs establishes strategic parterships, cultivates eviromets ad creates experieces that foster the itellectual, psychosocial, spiritual ad ethical growth of studets. (Studet Affairs missio statemet was updated o July 28, 2005.) II. Goals The Divisio of Studet Affairs will provide trasformative co-curricular learig opportuities that promote studets itellectual, psychosocial, spiritual ad ethical growth. The Divisio of Studet Affairs will provide experieces that ecourage studets to itegrate ad demostrate the uiversity s missio ad values i life ad practice. The Divisio of Studet Affairs will provide opportuities for studets to become fully egaged i the DePaul commuity by fosterig a sese of belogig ad coectedess. The Divisio of Studet Affairs will provide learig opportuities to studets ad staff that will ehace their appreciatio of diversity ad challege biased beliefs ad behaviors. The Divisio of Studet Affairs will provide studets with the iformatio ad tools eeded to avigate the uiversity system with ease. The Divisio of Studet Affairs will utilize valid measuremet tools ad accoutability stadards to establish bechmarks, to evaluate successes ad to idetify areas for improvemet ad chage. III. Programs ad Services Provided The Office of the Vice Presidet for Studet Affairs serves as the lead admiistrative office for the Divisio of Studet Affairs at DePaul Uiversity (See Appedix A for orgaizatioal chart). The followig four areas comprise the Office of the Vice Presidet for Studet Affairs. 1. Diversity, Empowermet ad Iclusio: These departmets provide support to studets of color ad work with directors ad maagers throughout Studet Affairs to develop ad facilitate diversity awareess semiars for staff, studet orgaizatios ad all groups affiliated with the divisio. These offices also maitai a collectio of diversity educatio materials. The offices reportig to the Associate Vice Presidet for Diversity, Empowermet ad Iclusio iclude the Office of Multicultural Studet Affairs, the Cultural Ceter ad Diversity Educatio. 2. Studet Developmet: Studet Developmet oversees the divisio s educatioal programs ad strives to maximize the holistic learig eviromet for all DePaul studets. The offices of Academic Ehacemet, Residetial Educatio, Studet Life, ad the Studet Leadership Istitute report to the Associate Vice Presidet for Studet Developmet. 3. Studet Advocacy ad Commuity Relatios: Studet Advocacy ad Commuity Relatios provides a comprehesive ifrastructure that supports the total studet while providig appropriate safety ets of assessmet, couselig, itervetio ad referral. The six departmets reportig to the Associate Vice Presidet of Studet Advocacy ad Commuity Relatios iclude the Dea of Studets Office, Uiversity Couselig Services, Adult Studet Affairs, the Productive Learig Strategies Program, the Office for Studets with Disabilities ad Veteras Affairs. 4. Uiversity Miistry: Uiversity Miistry provides comprehesive leadership ad directio to members of the uiversity commuity ad provides a opportuity to itegrate religious ad moral priciples with academic study ad oacademic activities, thus itegratig faith ad life. These areas support ad promote the pastoral care of all members of the uiversity commuity at DePaul, both Catholic ad o-catholic. Departmets withi Uiversity Miistry that report to the Associate Vice Presidet of Uiversity Miistry iclude Commuity Service, Catholic Campus Miistry ad Pastoral Outreach, ad Religious Diversity. 4 IV. Populatios Served The Divisio of Studet Affairs is resposible for servig all professioal, graduate ad udergraduate studets erolled at the uiversity. Specific populatios served iclude adult ad traditioal age studets, first geeratio studets, studets with disabilities, residetial ad commuter studets, studets with emotioal ad metal illess, studets of color, studet athletes ad vetera studets. V. Collaborative Parterships The Divisio of Studet Affairs strives to develop collaborative parterships both withi ad outside the uiversity i order to stregthe support systems for studets ad ehace the work of the divisio. Over the past year, the divisio has egaged i 138 collaborative parterships withi the uiversity commuity ad 251 parterships with orgaizatios exteral to DePaul. Status Report To better uderstad where the Divisio of Studet Affairs has focused its efforts durig the academic year, the followig status report outlies the primary accomplishmets achieved i each area. Filled four of five director vacacies: Director of Multicultural Studet Affairs, Director of the Studet Leadership Istitute, Director of the Cultural Ceter ad Director of Academic Ehacemet. 3. Hired two staff psychologists, a social worker, a drug ad alcohol specialist ad a part-time psychiatrist i respose to the Studet Welfare Report. 4. While a log-term Loop campus space pla was ot fully developed, the Loop parters held a retreat to discuss Loop campus eeds ad develop recommedatios. Goal IV. Diversity (Uiversity Goal 3) a) Implemeted a Diversity Taskforce that resulted i the developmet of a comprehesive strategic pla for the Diversity, Empowermet ad Iclusio area. b) Developed a ew visio ad strategies for the Offices of Diversity Educatio, Multicultural Studet Affairs ad the Cultural Ceter. c) Fully implemeted the Me of Color Iitiative. 2. Studet Welfare (Uiversity Goal 2) a) Developed, fuded ad implemeted a Veteras Affairs office to assist veteras i trasitioig ito the uiversity, accessig uiversity services ad programs, ad coectig with commuity resources. b) Completed a outreach series to further educate staff ad faculty i the colleges ad schools regardig available studet support services. c) The ewly hired Social Worker developed ad implemeted a pla to better coect studets to commuity social service resources ad developed a stroger etwork of uiversity services to improve awareess ad access. d) The ewly hired Alcohol ad Drug Specialist implemeted the BASIC s alcohol itervetio program ad traied staff ad studet leaders to serve as resources for the program. e) Expaded programs ad services for Loop studets. II. Visio Twety12 Activities to Date ( ) The followig is a list of activities desiged ad implemeted by the Divisio of Studet Affairs over the past three years to assist the Uiversity i achievig its Visio Twety12 goals. A. Socially Resposible Leadership (Uiversity Goal 2a & b) Implemeted a Socially Resposible Leadership iitiative that icluded facilitatig a uiversity wide forum focused o pedagogical strategies to develop socially resposible leadership, traiig 400 studets usig the ewly developed Socially Resposible Leader curriculum, ad implemetig a Graduatio Pledge for Social Resposibility. Lauched the Voices Project i Fall The Voices Project uses a documetary like film of DePaul studet voices discussig social resposibility i their lives to jump-start classroom coversatios i Chicago Quarter courses. Implemeted the DePaul Leadership Scholars Program, a developmetal leadership process that egages studets i commuity service activities, leadership developmet programs ad commuity buildig opportuities. Implemeted a comprehesive educatioal program pertaiig to the electio year resultig i over 1400 studets beig registered to vote. Hosted the first bi-aual Faith ad Civic Egagemet (FACE) coferece which icluded 160 participats ad 50 regioal, atioal ad iteratioal istitutios ad received broad acclaim for leadig the coversatio o the coectio betwee faith ad civic egagemet or service. I Jue, 2009, the divisio hosted a secod regioal coferece o Faith, Justice ad Civic Learig which icluded 123 participats ad 24 regioal ad atioal istitutios, as well as Campus Compact represetatives. Uiversity Miistry developed a Catholic Social Teachig curriculum which was itroduced i Steas Ceter courses to studets workig i Catholic schools. B. Studet Support ad Programmig (Uiversity Goal 2c) Developed ad implemeted the Me of Color Iitiative to provide support ad a sese of commuity for me of color at DePaul with the goal of assistig them i achievig their academic ad persoal goals. Retooled ew studet orietatio programs to address academic ehacemet with a emphasis o holistic advisig, curriculum overviews ad DePaul s core values ad learig opportuities. Implemeted mothly orietatio programs ad o-lie orietatio sessios for late admits, adult studets, ad studets who caot atted o-campus sessios. Ehaced services for trasfer studets through the developmet of a trasfer ewsletter, a trasfer sectio of Discover Chicago, ad commuity buildig programs. 7 Expaded studet egagemet opportuities for commuter studets through restructurig the Commuter Activities Board, redesigig the commuter website, implemetig weekly commuter podcasts, ad publishig a off-campus housig guide. Ehaced the campus programmig model through parterships with Campus Recreatio, Studet Ceters ad Athletics to improve coordiatio of campus evets ad icrease studet egagemet. Established 2 ew Livig ad Learig Commuities to ehace residetial studet learig. Developed, fuded ad fully implemeted a Veteras Affairs Office. C. Studet Support ad Programmig (Uiversity Goal 2d) Implemeted a o-lie studet orgaizatio maagemet tool (Demo Direct) i April 2008 to improve outreach ad commuicatio to orgaizatio members ad to esure accuracy of membership iformatio. Cotributed to the re-desig of DePaul s Bridge program implemeted Summer Collaborated with Academic Affairs to implemet the o-lie Academic Progress Reportig system i Fall 2009 to collect mid-term grades ad feedback from faculty to support first year studet academic success. Uiversity Miistry implemeted a ew orgaizatioal structure to iclude a full-time Residece Hall Miister ad a Protestat Christia Miister. I additio, a Protestat Christia Studet Leadership Board was created to eable coordiatio, oversight ad support of Protestat Christia orgaizatios. D. Studet Welfare (Uiversity Goal 2d) Implemeted a strategic pla based o the Uiversity s Metal Health review (2007). As a result, Couselig Services added two psychologists ad a part-time psychiatrist, ad the Dea of Studet Office added a drug ad alcohol specialist ad a social worker. This pla also icluded additioal program support for the academic year. Cetralized ad itegrated services to support studet welfare through the Studet Ceter third floor build-out which ivolved re-locatig Uiversity Couselig Services, the Productive Learig Strategies Office (PLuS), ad the Office for Studets with Disabilities, as well as expaded space for Academic Ehacemet, ad ewly created space for the Studet Affairs cetral office. Completed the Studet Advocacy ad Welfare outreach series to further educate staff ad faculty i the colleges ad schools regardig available studet support services. E. Diversity (Uiversity Goal 3) Implemeted a Diversity Taskforce that resulted i the developmet of a comprehesive strategic pla for the area, icludig a ew visio ad strategies for the Offices of Diversity Educatio, Multicultural Studet Affairs ad the Cultural Ceter. Uiversity Miistry hired a part-time Muslim Chaplai to provide support for DePaul s Muslim studets. F. Catholic Idetity (Uiversity Goal 6) Uiversity Miistry implemeted the Thursdays with Vicet ad Luch with Vicet programs to help faculty ad staff gai a deeper uderstadig of the missio, particularly Vicetia spirituality. Uiversity Miistry also implemeted DePaul Modays, a weekly service opportuity for faculty ad staff to serve those i eed. Uiversity Miistry hired two ew staff members to ehace programs ad services for DePaul commuity members who idetify as Catholic or wat to lear more about Catholicism. 8 SECTION C: PLANNING AND PRIORITIES I. Treds i Higher Educatio There are a umber of recet treds at the atioal level that are havig a sigificat impact o the divisio s work with studets. The followig is a list of atioal treds ad how they have maifested themselves here at DePaul. 1. Cotiued cocer regardig studet health ad welless Natioal Treds There is a icreasig complexity of studet metal health issues (Gallagher, 2006; Kadiso & DiGeromio, 2004). Newly released data cotiues to support the atioal tred toward a icrease i studets with learig disabilities ad metal health issues as a area of cocer. o 33% of studets report stress as a health impedimet. o 16% report relatioship difficulty ad early 19% report cocer for a family member or fried. o 14% of wome report beig i a emotioally abusive relatioship. o 27.3% of studets felt so depressed that it was difficult to fuctio 1 4 times i the last year. (America College Health Associatio, 2008) Research idicates that over the last 15 years, the icidece of depressio has doubled o college campuses, the umber of suicidal studets has tripled, ad the report of sexual assault has quadrupled (Beto, et al., 2003). The Natioal College Health Assessmet Survey (2006) idicates that sice the year 2000, 4 out of the top 5 impedimets to academic performace i colleges across the coutry (i.e., stress, colds/flu, sleep difficulties, cocer for fried or family member, depressio/axiety disorder) are emotioal or behavioral i ature. DePaul Treds Complicated metal health issues reiforce the Uiversity s decisio to hire a Social Worker as a commuity resource specialist. I the year, there were te reports of ie studets who were hospitalized for serious metal health issues. May of these icidets resulted i sigificat collaboratios with the Commuity Resource Specialist. Studet health ad welfare is a major focus of Divisioal strategic plaig. Cocer about metal health issues impactig uiversity busiess appears to be widespread across campus amog Studet Affairs ad Academic Affairs leaders alike. Demad for couselig services cotiues to grow eve as studets preset with more urget ad complex problems. Uiversity Couselig Services has bee challeged to egage i more outreach ad traiig of staff ad faculty due to heighteed awareess (ad axiety) related to the recet Virgiia Tech ad Norther Illiois Uiversity campus shootigs, as well as stated Divisioal priorities. Demad for couselig services cotiues to be high. Uiversity Couselig Services delivered 5079 idividual ad group couselig sessios for the academic year. The more visible locatio of the couselig ceter i the Licol Park Studet Ceter, as well as the icrease i outreach to campus parters, could be cotributig to a 29% icrease i utilizatio over the past year. Oe recet tred is that early a third of Uiversity Couselig cliets are ow referred by Faculty or Staff. I additio, parets ad frieds are the referral sources for aother 14% of cliets (5% ad 9% respectively). I the past, more tha 90% of our cliet populatio has bee self-referred. Waitlists were ot as log this year with the additio of ew staff members ad the expasio of the cliical traiig program. There were a uprecedeted umber of studet suicidal gestures (primarily residetial studets) durig fall Uiversity Couselig Services has doubled efforts to reach out to residece hall studets, commuicate services to them ad trai Residet Assistats how to recogize ad refer distressed ad potetially at-risk studets. Uiversity Couselig Services ow has a desigated staff member who serves as a liaiso to Residetial Educatio, icludig mothly attedace at Residece Director staff meetigs. For the first time, Uiversity Couselig Services lauched the provisio of psychiatric services i September Oe hudred ad thirtee studets have received psychiatric evaluatios. May of these studets have received care here, while others have bee coected to DePaul Uiversity Divisio of Studet Affairs ANNUAL REPORT 6

9 commuity resources. May studets who previously had to be referred off-campus for psychiatric services are ow able to make the lik much more successfully ad with more positive treatmet outcomes (especially saliet with the quarter system). Staff ratios have improved greatly with the additio of 2 additioal staff psychologists ad a cosultig psychiatrist. Uiversity Couselig Services remais a lea staff whe compared to recommeded couselor to studet ratios. Therefore, keepig up with the flow of traffic is a formidable challege. Through maximizig efficiecies ad utilizig a ew state-of-the-art couselig ceter software maagemet system (Titaium), Couselig Services has bee able to keep wait lists at a miimum. Uiversity Couselig Services has a strog partership with the Dea of Studets Office ad the Productive Learig Strategies program i the Studet Advocacy ad Welfare (S.A.W.) iitiative. These departmets have coducted faculty ad staff traiigs for all colleges ad schools o how to recogize ad refer distressed ad distressig studets. Uiversity Couselig Services has experieced a icrease i walk-i/crisis activity. Durig the year there were 270 walk-i/ crisis visits. Walk-is are especially high at the Licol Park Campus office. Uiversity Couselig Services produced a stadardized metal health ad welless curriculum for First Year Programs. As a major outreach iitiative, studets participatig i the first year program were exposed to importat health iformatio o how to recogize the sigs ad symptoms of distress i themselves ad their peers, how to maximize resiliecy so as to fully beefit from the college experiece, ad how to make use of couselig ceter resources as ecessary. they drak ad 11.8 % report havig 9 or more driks the last time they drak. Istitutios of Higher Educatio are establishig proactive approaches to scree first year studets for substace use problems ad amesty policies to reduce the likelihood that studets will declie to obtai help for a peer for fear of puishmet. DePaul Treds While the umber of alcohol icidets oce agai rose durig the year, the umber of repeat offeders i the area of alcohol cotiued to fall. There was a marked icrease i the umber of studets who were trasported to the hospital for over-drikig (from 18 i 2007/2008 to 32 i 2008/2009). Of the 32 trasports, all but oe trasport was a result of drikig at a off campus house party. 3. Icrease i studets with learig disabilities Natioal Treds There is a chagig ladscape of studet populatios with disabilities eterig higher educatio. Disorders that were oce cosidered low icidece disabilities, such as autism, Attetio Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD), ad metal health disorders, are ow becomig high icidece disabilities. There has bee cocer that the rate of autism is icreasig, but recet data from the Natioal Health Iterview surveys does ot cofirm this. Asperger Sydrome is more prevalet today tha it was a decade ago, but the rates of the disorder appear to be flatteig out. There are cotiuig ad ew cocers about studets livig with learig disabilities, icludig the effects of log-term stress ad the iteralizatio of feeligs of fear, self-doubt, ad extreme self-criticism. 2. Studet alcohol use ad abuse Natioal Treds The data suggests that alcohol is still a tred worth payig attetio to at the atioal level. Although bige drikig has remaied steady i recet years at 44%, more studets are egagig i frequet (ad more toxic) bige drikig (Wechsler, 2001). I the 2008 America College Health Associatio survey 26.1% of studets report havig 5 8 driks the last time DePaul Treds Although the majority of ew Productive Learig Strategies (PLuS) studets are diagosed with learig disabilities, we have see a sigificat rise i the diagosis of Attetio Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) ad metal health disorders. If the primary disorder is AD/ HD, PLuS services that studet, while a studet with a primary diagosis of metal health disorders is serviced by the Office of Studets with DePaul Uiversity Divisio of Studet Affairs ANNUAL REPORT 7

10 Disabilities. However, the frequet comorbidity of these two disorders makes it difficult to idetify the best service placemet for these studets. Studets o the autism spectrum are still very much a part of PLuS erollmet, but they are a small percetage of the overall erollmet, ad PLuS has bee able to provide beeficial services for them. I the past few years, the PLuS program has see a icrease i studets with Asperger Sydrome, a diagosis o the high ed of autism characterized (i very geeral terms) by lack of social skills ad behaviorial oddities. However, ew erollees ad iquiries for future PLuS erollmet specific to this disorder are more towards the geeral autism spectrum ad pervasive developmetal disorder. Associated medicatio for these disabilities ad chagig medicatio protocols have caused severe imbalaces i studets fuctioig which egatively impacts their ability to fuctio ad adequately deal with their academics, social life or life i geeral. DePaul s erollmet of studets with learig disabilities ad/or AD/HD is steadily icreasig. Durig there was a 17% icrease over the previous year, ad i there was a 33% icrease. I approximately 135 studets were erolled which was a 20% icrease over last year. A icrease i exam proctorig (from 1,154 i to 1,370 i ) is impactig the PLuS office. With the chages i exam schedulig, the PLuS office aticipates a eve more itesive exam proctorig schedule. Although PLuS regularly cosults with Loop campus faculty, there is a cocer that PLuS services (studet/faculty cosultatio & exam proctorig) are ot sufficiet for the Loop campus. With three udergraduate colleges ow located o the Loop campus it is importat to ivestigate Loop campus services, especially sice a large percetage of PLuS studets are erolled i the College of Commicatio. 4. Cotiued cocer for me of color ad their persistece to graduatio Natioal Treds Recet atioal ad istitutioal research idicates that erollmet, retetio ad graduatio rates of me of color lag sigificatly behid other represetative groups at the uiversity level. Natiowide, wome of color are much more represeted o our college campuses tha me. Sixty-four percet of Africa America udergraduates are wome i cotrast to oly 35.8% Africa America me. Fifty-eight percet of Latio/a udergraduates are wome i cotrast to 42.1% me (Cuyjet, 2006). DePaul Treds At DePaul 33% of Africa Americas are me ad 39% of Latio/as are me. Give the overall ratios of Africa Americas ad Latio/ as i DePaul s udergraduate populatio, this meas that oly 3% of udergraduates are Africa America me ad 5% of udergraduates are Latios (DePaul Istitutioal Plaig ad Research Factfile). Africa America ad Latio males graduate at a lower rate tha ay related groupig (Asia America males, etc.). Eve cotrollig for attritio, Africa America ad Latio males retai at almost a 20% lower rate tha the DePaul Uiversity studet composite after four years. I the past four graduatig classes roughly 1 i 3 Africa America males ad about 1 i 2 Latios who erolled at DePaul as freshme graduate from DePaul i six years. Accordig to the Itegrated Postsecodary Educatio Data set, the 2006 sixth year graduatio rates for Africa America me ad Latios (the 2000 cohort) DePaul tied for twety-first place amog its Catholic peers i the rate of graduatio of Africa America me (a rakig of eighteeth for Africa America wome). DePaul tied for twetieth place amog its Catholic peers i the graduatio of Latios (a rakig of ieteeth for Latias). 5. Icreased use of social etworkig commuities Natioal Treds Aoymous chat commuities such as Juicy Campus have begu to permeate campuses across the coutry. There is also a iterest i usig these commuities to commuicate with studets. Numerous Studet Affairs departmets use Facebook to commuicate with studets ad advertise evets. Uiversity Miistry, for example, created Facebook pages to commuicate with service orgaizatio members. I collaboratio with Erollmet Maagemet ad Marketig, Studet Affairs has created a o-lie commuity for DePaul parets called the Quad. O the site, parets ca chat with oe aother, atted virtual workshops, read uiversity updates ad receive programmig ad evet iformatio. The Divisio of Studet Affairs has joied DePaul s Social Networkig committee ad is curretly cosiderig ew ways to utilize o-lie commuities ad etworkig sites. 6. Paret ivolvemet Natioal Tred Paretal ivolvemet has allegedly cotiued to icrease ad led to istitutios developig ew relatioships with parets that impact most of Studet Affairs. Members of this college geeratio have strog relatioships with their parets ad the resultig helicopter parets have impacted residece life ad other areas across the coutry. Some recet reports, however, idicate this may be the exceptio rather tha the rule. DePaul Tred Paret ad family ivolvemet i orietatio ad family orietated programs cotiues to icrease yearly. From 2007 to 2008, there was a icrease of 1,000 ad 800 family members attedig Premiere ad Trasitio DePaul, respectively. Additioally, attedace for Family Weeked grew by approximately 450 registrats i the past year. Residetial Educatio believes that parets cotiue to be active i the lives of their sos ad daughters. Eve though Residetial Educatio did ot have a opportuity to speak separately to all parets durig summer orietatio i 2008 ad the Director did ot provide the direct phoe umber of her office, paretal cotacts still icreased from 118 to 178. It is also importat to ote that this is the first year a paret or guardia called followig the receipt of a paretal otificatio letter. 7. Icreased focus o faith, spirituality ad higher educatio Natioal Treds There are a icreasig umber of iitiatives, programs ad orgaizatios atioally focused o buildig cooperative iterfaith dialogue ad actio, as well as a growig opeess ad desire to create hospitable shared spaces. Islamic chaplaicy is a relatively ew field professioally i higher educatio ad beyod. A major survey by the Pew Forum o Religio ad Public Life fids that most Americas have a o-dogmatic approach to faith. A strog majority of those who are affiliated with a religio, icludig majorities of early every religious traditio, do ot believe their religio is the oly way to salvatio. Ad almost the same umber believes that there is more tha oe true way to iterpret the teachigs of their religio. Large survey data seems to suggest that youg adults ted to move away from traditioal religious practices, yet remai spiritually iterested ad active. However, i reality the data is more complex tha that ad is quite mixed ad ofte times cotradictory. What does appear evidet i most all cases is that religious ad spiritual issues ted to become eclipsed durig the youg adult or college years, as other issues rise higher i sigificace to them durig this time. Over the last several years, ad recetly, as evideced by the Natioal Associatio of Studet Persoel Admiistrators, the Associatio of College Persoel Admiistrators, ad other cofereces ad proceedigs, there is a growig iterest ad study of college studet spiritual developmet. Public as well as private, religious schools see the issue as relevat ad sigificat, especially sice Higher Educatio Research Istitutes (H.E.R.I) ladmark Spirituality Study data was first preseted i the fall of DePaul Uiversity Divisio of Studet Affairs ANNUAL REPORT 9

12 DePaul Treds I order to create a more hospitable space for Muslim studets ad to cotiue to foster iterfaith dialogue amog religious groups, Uiversity Miistry hired a part-time Muslim Chaplai. The Faith ad Civic Egagemet (FACE) Project at DePaul has collected a third set of data from studets, faculty ad staff to assess how they coect their diverse faith commitmets ad ier covictios to the idea ad practice of civic egagemet (service) as a lifelog commitmet, so that oe reiforces the other. Accordig to three years (2006, 2007, 2008) of FACE survey results: o DePaul studets are somewhat more likely tha the atioal orm to say it is importat to them that DePaul ecourages the persoal expressio of spirituality (57% as compared to the H.E.R.I. Spirituality Study, 48%). o Approximately half of DePaul studets (47%) suggest that it is importat to them that DePaul provide veues for sharig o faith experiece ad traditios ad ecourages the persoal expressio of faith (49%). o DePaul studets are reflective of the atioal orm i sayig that they have discussed religio or spirituality with frieds (92%) ad family (88%) (H.E.R.I. Study, 80%, 76% occasioally or frequetly). However, oly 30% of DePaul studets say they have discussed religio or spirituality i campus orgaizatios. o Approximately 59% of DePaul studets say that religio is very importat or fairly importat i their life. o DePaul studets appear to be fairly cosistet with the atioal orm i sayig that they believe i God (approximately 75%, as compared to 79% i the H.E.R.I. Study) ad that they pray (73%, as compared to 69% i H.E.R.I. Study). Accordig to FACE data, DePaul studets ted to be more likely tha studets at DePaul s atioal Catholic peer istitutios to say: o It is importat to help others i difficulty (80% DePaul to 66% atioal Catholic). o It is importat to participate i a commuity actio pla (46% DePaul to 26% atioal Catholic). o It is importat to become a commuity leader (39% DePaul to 35% atioal Catholic). o o o o It is importat to keep up to date with political affairs (64% DePaul to 30% atioal Catholic). They have worked together iformally with someoe or some group to solve a problem i the commuity where they live (46% DePaul to 22% atioal Catholic). Implemeted i Fall 2004, the divisio worked closely with the Offices of Istitutioal Plaig ad Research ad Teachig Learig ad Assessmet to develop a itegrated assessmet iitiative desiged to measure the day-to-day operatios of the divisio, as well as the divisio s impact o studet learig, egagemet ad ivolvemet. Divisioal assessmet activities are coordiated by the Director of Assessmet, Research ad Commuicatios ad the Studet Affairs Assessmet Committee. The two mai goals of the assessmet process are to promote cotiuous improvemet ad uderstad how the divisio cotributes to studet learig. Assessmet is directly liked to the divisio s missio. Based o the missio, the divisio has determied critical evirometal factors that eed to be i place to support studet success at DePaul. These critical factors are referred to as success factors ad costitute programs, services ad collaboratios that support the missio. Critical evirometal factors (success factors) that support studet success iclude high quality programs, itervetio ad support services, commuity service activities, uiversity-wide celebratios, well traied staff members, ad effective uiversity parterships. Each success factor is further defied i part II of this sectio. The fourtee departmets i Studet Affairs each cotribute to some subset of the success factors. Departmets demostrate cotributios through their key activities. Key activities defie what each departmet does o a day-to-day basis ad measure departmet performace throughout the academic year. Key activities are measured accordig to cost, magitude, satisfactio, ad learig outcomes. Data regardig key activities is collected usig BOTH quatitative ad qualitative methods. I additio to evaluatig key activities, each departmet is asked to coduct a assessmet project that focuses o oe aspect or outcome related to oe key activity.
