Studet Accomplishmets The Ohloe Foresics Team had aother very successful year, with umerous wis i umerous competitios. Ohloe studet Kivraj Sigh tied for CCCFA State Champioship Keelig-Fricker Award for Top Speaker of Oral Iterpretatio of Literature. This award is for the whole state of Califoria! Of special ote are the fial two competitios of the Fall 2014 ad Sprig 2015 Semesters. I April 2015 the Foresics Team closed out the year by participatig i the Phi Rho Pi Natioal Touramet i Clevelad, Ohio. Maveer Sigh eared a Broze i IPDA Debate (ad was udefeated!); Kivraj Sigh wo a Broze i Poetry ad a Silver i Program Oral Iterpretatio; ad Sarah Goulart wo a Silver i Prose. O December 6-7, 2014 the Team participated at the UC Berkeley Idividual Evets touramet. At this touramet Kivraj Sigh eared a first place i Dramatic Iterpretatio ad Poetry; a secod place i Prose; ad a third place i Program Oral Iterpretatio ad After Dier Speech. Maveer Sigh wet from competig i ovice to ope (the big leagues!) ad placed sixth i Impromptu. Jose Perscale eared a third place i Iformative ad a fourth place i Novice Extemporaeous. The Ohloe College Moitor wo First Place for O-Site Opiio Writig, First Place for Colum Writig, ad Secod Place for Feature Story Writig at the November 2014 Jouralism Associatio of Commuity Colleges NorCal coferece i Sacrameto. Dr. Jeff Wataabe ad twelve studets spet Sprig Break i March 2015 o a Study Abroad trip i Bahia de Los Ageles i Baja Califoria, Mexico. The studets experieced both lad based ad aquatic advetures. This was the first Study Abroad trip for the Evirometal Studies Departmet. Oce agai, Ohloe s Respiratory Therapy Program has bee chose amog a select group to be recogized by the Commissio o Accreditatio for Respiratory Care to receive the Distiguished RRT Credetialig Success Award. Criteria for selectio iclude holdig accreditatio without a required progress report; credetialig success of 90% or higher; ad meetig or exceedig established thresholds for credetialig success, low attritio, ad successful job placemet.

SWE is the largest professioal body of wome egieers; wome serve as role models ad provide support ot oly to their peers but to studets who wat to eter the field of egieerig. Durig the academic year te female studets from Ohloe atteded a Society for Wome Egieers coferece with Professor Itua, where Ohloe was recogized as the first commuity college i Norther Califoria to have a SWE group o campus. The youg wome who atteded the coferece were able to iteract with wome i their chose career path, who metored ad ecouraged them to persevere. Jeff Roberts, Associate Professor ad Athletic Traier, atteded the 2015 Super Bowl i Phoeix watchig the game but, more importatly, watchig the players for potetial head ijuries. Sice 2011 Professor Roberts has bee the spotter for the NFL s Cocussio Protocol Maagemet program at the o.co Coliseum durig all Oaklad Raiders home games. Based o his excellet performace as a spotter for the Oaklad Raiders, the NFL ivited Roberts to work at the Super Bowl. Professor Roberts is dedicated to keepig Ohloe at the frotlies of cocussio maagemet techology. A recet example is the use of Sway mobile software which uses the motio detectio i smartphoes to detect balace deficit, a idicator that a idividual has suffered a traumatic brai ijury. Roberts has oted that there are t may four-year schools that are usig the Sway program yet ad to his kowledge there is t a sigle commuity college i the atio. David Topham, Computer Sciece professor, was awarded a 2014 Summer Fellowship from Idustry Iitiatives for Sciece ad Math Educatio (IISME). Durig a very competitive year, Professor Topham was selected from 300 applicats. The fellowship offers recipiets hads-o math, sciece, ad techology experiece while workig side by side with the Bay Area s leadig idustry, research, ad uiversity professioals. College Accomplishmets The Academic Core Buildigs Project has bee awarded the 2015 SCUP Excellece i Plaig Hoor Award. Each year the Society for College ad Uiversity Plaig (SCUP) recogizes excellece i plaig, desig, ad implemetatio efforts of firms ad higher educatio istitutios. The Academic Core project was oe of seve projects hoored atiowide. This is a prestigious award, ad it is fairly ucommo for a commuity college project to be recogized. The ew Commuicatio Lab opeed at the Newark Campus durig Fall 2014, so Ohloe has aother great resource to assist studets learig! The Lab is focused o Public Speakig studets but studets i ay commuicatio classes ca fid useful resources ad valuable studet metors there. The Lab ca assist studets with research, orgaizatio, delivery techiques, as well as visual aids creatio ad use. Ohloe s Commuicatio Labs ad Tutor Traiig Program received atioal certificatio i Sprig The certificatio comes from the Natioal Associatio of Commuicatio Ceters (NACC). Of the thirtee commuicatio labs certified by NACC atioally, Ohloe is the oly college i Califoria to ear this certificatio ad oe of oly two commuity colleges atiowide. To qualify for atioal certificatio Ohloe developed i-depth traiig ad preparatio materials ad procedures, which icluded writig two commuicatio lab ad tutor traiig mauals, ad creatig a traiig program for peer-tutorig geared towards istructors ad tutors i the lab. The Deaf Studies Divisio had a record-breakig ad largest umber of ew Deaf studets 49 i the program durig Fall Most of the Deaf classes were filled to capacity i the first week. Ohloe has bee listed i Etertaimet Desiger Magazie as oe of ie iovative programs for Etertaimet Desig ad Techology. The Ohloe College Foudatio received the doatio of a atique Wurlitzer theatre pipe orga from Cliff ad Judy Luscher of Uio City. The three maual keyboard orga was origially istalled i the Lyric Theatre i Morovia, Califoria i 1925 ad is valued i excess of $200,000. The workig orga will become a permaet istallatio i the Jackso Theatre i the Gary Sore Smith Ceter for the Fie ad Performig Arts, where the orga will be used for orchestral cocerts, theatre productios, silet movies, ad idividual orga cocert evets. Oe of the metrics o the Califoria Commuity Colleges Studet Success Scorecard is improvemet i basic skills math; that is, the percetage of studets whose first math class was basic skills who evetually completed a collegelevel math course. There are 25 Califoria Commuity Colleges that are grouped together as peers, ad Ohloe had the highest performace rate of all 25 colleges. Ohloe s 46.1% rate of basic skills math studets completig a college-level math course with a grade of C or higher was the oly rate above 40%, with a peer average of 28.1% ad a statewide average of 31.0%. Additioally, both Ohloe s Africa America ad Hispaic studets had the highest rate amog its peers ad both far exceeded the statewide rates. Ohloe is #1 amog its peers ad #2 compared to all 112 commuity colleges i preparig basic skills math studets to succeed i college-level math courses! Ohloe has received fudig from the Uited Way for a math acceleratio program for studets pursuig egieerig. This program will allow studets to move from Algebra II through the first semester of Calculus i just two semesters. These fuds are beig used to develop the curriculum ad teach the first cohort. Future cohorts are beig supported by the recetly awarded Departmet of Labor Ready to Work Grat, i which Ohloe will receive $1 millio of the $5 millio awarded to this regioal cosortium. Ohloe was amed #8 o the list of the Top 30 Commuity Colleges i the Uited States i the October 2014 editio of the Chiese magazie College Studet. Ohloe was selected o the basis of high trasfer rates ad trasfer agreemets with Uiversity of Califoria campuses. Ohloe s exceptioal olie program was listed by Affordable Colleges Olie as #7 i the Top 40 Olie Commuity Colleges for I March 2015 Radio magazie, a widely-read source for up-to-date iformatio o the latest i radio broadcast techology, published a article about KOHL, the Ohloe College radio statio, ad its iovative method for coductig remote broadcasts. The article cites Tom Briseo, adjuct faculty member i KOHL s radio program. Briseo, a faculty member at KOHL for more tha 20 years, has bee a drivig force i keepig Ohloe up-to-date i the techology area. The article i Radio has geerated quite a bit of iterest from other radio statios. KOHL immediately bega gettig calls from other radio statios about the Web techology used by KOHL for their remote broadcasts. Ohloe, which is already i the top 10% of commuity colleges statewide for completios (degrees awarded ad trasfer studets), witessed a substatial icrease i program awards at the close of the academic year. Six hudred eighty-five associate degrees were awarded (compared to 545 associate degrees for ), ad there were 821 certificates awarded (compared to 271 certificates for ). 3 Commuity Outreach Seve Ohloe College Nursig studets participated i the Kaiser Fremot Chemical Disaster Drill i September The studets were dressed i full Haz-Mat suits ad worked side-by-side with Kaiser physicias to triage, diagose, ad treat simulated patiets. This is the fifth year the Nursig studets have participated i a Kaiser Disaster Drill, which have also bee coducted at Kaiser Hayward ad Kaiser Oaklad. Five Nursig studets, accompaied by Nacy Dismore, Associate Professor i Nursig, voluteered their time at the America Legio 40 et 8 covocatio held i 2014 at the Sata Clara Covetio Ceter. The studets were prepared to hadle mior emergecies. The veteras appreciated the Nursig studets presece ad reported that they had peace of mid that urses were o the premises. The faculty ad studets happily reported their ursig skills were ot eeded. Durig late Sprig 2015 Ohloe was able to atted the Heald College Trasfer Fair that was called i respose to the closig of Corithia Colleges. Ohloe had three staff cover this evet that served approximately 675 studets. College Evets A record $80,000 was raised at the 30th Aual Ohloe College Golf Touramet i September 2014, a 54% icrease over the previous 2013 high water mark. The evet was supported by 26 major sposors, also more tha previous years. The Ohloe College Foudatio has desigated $50,000 to be used to support College athletics ad $30,000 to support other college programs. Ohloe College Outstadig Alumi ad promiet TV ews achor ad reporter Dia Eastwood emceed the baquet, ad there was special recogitio for Fremot Bak s 30 years of support. The HR Departmet collaborated with the Speech ad Commuicatio Studies Departmet to facilitate a Commuity Dialogue o Race ad Social Ijustice i February Speech ad Commuicatio faculty ad HR facilitated thought-provokig exercises to ecourage studets, faculty, staff, ad admiistrators to be ope with their perspectives ad experieces with race issues. The forum eded with a exercise to display the value of itercoectedess o matter the differeces. O March 16, 2015 the Couselig Departmet hosted its aual High School Couselor Coferece, a evet that has promoted collaboratio betwee Ohloe ad local high school couselors i the commuity sice the early 2000s. This year the evet was held at the Newark campus, ad Ohloe hosted 35 attedees represetig 16 schools from the Tri-Cities, Milpitas, ad Hayward areas. The group discussed ew studet requiremets, cocurret high school erollmet, trasfer ad degree programs, Career Traiig Educatio programs ad job-traiig services, ad resources available through Disabled Studets Programs ad Services. By sharig such iformatio with the local high schools, the college hopes to better prepare ad support studets as they eter Ohloe. The Ohloe College Foudatio aouced its Sprig 2015 scholarship recipiets. This year 91 studets were awarded a total of $151,250 i scholarships. I 2001 commuity colleges i the Uited States celebrated 100 years of servig studets. Accordig to the America Associatio of Commuity Colleges, i 2015 there are 1123 commuity colleges i the Uited States, with 992 of those istitutios beig publicly cotrolled. I Fall 2013 there were 12.4 millio studets attedig commuity colleges i the Uited States, represetig 46% of all udergraduate studets i the Uited States ad 41% of all firsttime freshme i the Uited States. I commuity colleges awarded more tha 750,399 associate degrees ad 459,073 certificates. The Califoria Commuity College system of two-year public istitutios is composed of 112 colleges statewide orgaized ito 72 districts. Durig the academic year the Califoria Commuity College system erolled more tha 2.09 millio studets; 95,633 studets eared a associate degree; 11,839 studets eared a associate degree for trasfer; ad more tha 44,660 studets eared a certificate. The Califoria Commuity College System represets the largest system of higher educatio i the world. HISTORY OF OHLONE Established i 1965, Ohloe College serves the cities of Fremot ad Newark ad is located i the southeast area of the Sa Fracisco Bay Area, Califoria. Ohloe College is part of the Ohloe Commuity College District. The Fremot campus is located o Missio Boulevard off Highway 680 o a beautiful 534- acre hillside site just south of historical Missio Sa Jose. The Newark campus is located o Cherry Street west of Highway 880 o a 31-acre site adjacet to the Sa Fracisco Bay. The ame Ohloe was suggested by Mr. Felipe Galva to the fouders of the College i 1967 as a fittig ad appropriate ame, thus givig the College a proud heritage ad traditio which has edured amog faculty, staff, studets, ad admiistratio sice the opeig of the College over 40 years ago. Mr. Felipe Galva was a descedat ad a Elder of the Ohloe People who oce ihabited ot oly the area where Ohloe College is ow located, but the Ohloe People also lived ad thrived throughout the Sa Fracisco Bay Area for thousads of years. Mr. Galva was a ma respected ad admired for his work i preservig the memory, the heritage, ad the digity of the acestral Ohloe people through his efforts i the commuity, his life, ad his daily example. Officially amed Ohloe College o Jue 18, 1967, the college hoors the early Ohloe People of the Costaoa tribe, who ihabited the Fremot ad Newark area. Log before they were amed Costaoas by the Spaish priests, they were kow by a eighborig Miwuk tribe as the Ohloes or people of the West. Ohloe Commuity College District opeed its doors i September Classes were first held at a temporary site i the former Serra Ceter Home for Girls o Washigto Boulevard i Fremot. A year later, the Huddleso Rach property, located i the Missio foothills just south of old Missio Sa José, was selected as the permaet campus site. The academic year marked Ohloe s 45th aiversary of servig the Tri-cities commuity with higher educatio opportuities. I Jauary 2005 the College itroduced a ew logo to more fully represet the Ohloe heritage of its ame. The logo represets two eagle feathers suspeded from the su. The rays shootig off from the su look like arrowhead poits aimed i the four compass directios, a traditioal Native America symbol. The white bad aroud the su represets the O i Ohloe. The two feathers, aother traditioal symbol, also serve as a remider of the Native America traditios that Ohloe has emulated with the goals of beig more evirometally aware i its buildig ad its practices ad celebratig ad promotig cultural diversity. THE OHLONE CAMPUSES Fremot Campus The Fremot campus opeed i September 1974 ad is located o a beautiful 534-acre hillside above souther Alameda Couty betwee Highways 680 ad 880. With 300 acres reserved for ope space, the campus offers a peaceful learig eviromet for studets. Natural features icludig black oak, chaparral, ad seasoal sprigs domiate the ladscape ad welcome wildlife alogside the academic eviromet. The architecture is desiged to complemet the hillside surroudigs. At the ceter of the campus are buildigs comprisig the academic village, with classroom buildigs dedicated to music, art, Deaf studies, athletics, ad sciece labs. The cetral campus also features a studet ewspaper, cafeteria, ad bookstore. Additios to the Fremot campus are the fie ad performig arts ceter, the Gary Sore Smith Ceter for the Fie ad Performig Arts (which opeed i 1995); the busiess ad techology ceter, the Morris ad Alvirda Hyma Ceter for Busiess ad Techology (2002); ad the Studet Services Ceter (2009), located at the souther ed of the campus where the origial Buildig 7 was formerly located. A ew core of academic buildigs at the Fremot campus will house most of the educatioal offerigs at Ohloe. As a result of the 2012 District Facilities Master Pla it was idetified that may of the existig buildigs eeded to be replaced ad allow the campus to become more accessible to studets as well as meetig curret codes ad eergy efficiecies. Academic programs that will be icluded i the ew buildigs iclude sciece, arts, geeral educatio (math, Eglish, etc.), ad learig resources (tutorig, library, study areas, etc.). The ew core buildigs will replace Buildigs 1, 2, 3, 4, ad 8. The project is curretly beig desiged ad demolitio of the old buildigs started i Sprig 2015.

5 1 WELCOME TO OHLONE 11 Newark Campus The Newark Ceter for Health Scieces ad Techology (NCHST) opeed i Jauary Awarded LEED Platium Certificatio from the U.S. Gree Buildig Coucil, the highest achievable level of sustaiability, the campus serves as a model for other colleges to follow. It is a campus that teaches resposible, sustaiable resource maagemet both by example ad by itetios. The campus desig is tailored to meet the academic ad service eeds of studets o campus, with circulatio routes i ad aroud the buildig to promote studet iteractio ad ease of access. The buildig has four wigs that come together at a cetral hub. This feature creates a Campus Commos area with access to the café, computer kiosks, idividual ad group study areas, ad wireless access. The latest educatioal techology features ad ergoomic furiture are foud throughout the colorful learig eviromets. The NCHST offers degree ad certificate programs i health scieces, biotechology, ad evirometal studies. A variety of courses to meet geeral educatio requiremets are also offered. Learig Resource Ceter (LRC) The Learig Resource Ceter (LRC) has two locatios, oe o each campus. The Newark LRC is located o the first floor of wig 1 i Room NC1124. The Fremot LRC is located i Hyma Hall, first floor. The LRCs prit ad media collectios are primarily housed o the Fremot campus ad are accessible to Newark campus studets ad faculty through a iter-campus loa system. Registered studets may access the LRCs may electroic resources, icludig electroic books ad periodicals, through the LRCs Web site at www2.ohloe.edu/org/library/. LRCs o both campuses provide group ad idividual study space, access to persoal computers, ad wireless Iteret service. Hochler Studet Ceter The Hochler Studet Ceter i Buildig 5 o the Fremot campus houses the Ohloe College Bookstore; Cafeteria; facilities for the Moitor, the Ohloe College studet ewspaper; classrooms; ad serves as the hub of studet activities. Buildig 5 was dedicated to the memory of the Ohloe Trustee Abraham (Abe) Hochler o Jue 17, Mr. Hochler had served the Fremot- Newark Commuity College District as a trustee from July 1, 1966 util April 2, 1976, ad is remembered for his exceptioal leadership i developmet ad costructio of the College. He was a stauch supporter of studets durig his years of service to the District. Gary Sore Smith Ceter for the Fie ad Performig Arts The Gary Sore Smith Ceter for the Fie ad Performig Arts was built o the Fremot campus i 1995 to serve studet ad commuity eeds for a professioal performig arts facility. A impressive architectural creatio, the Gary Sore Smith Ceter for the Fie ad Performig Arts ca be see o the hills above Fremot from as far away as the Sa Mateo Bridge. The Gary Sore Smith Ceter for the Fie ad Performig Arts boasts state-of-the-art facilities i the areas of radio ad televisio productio ad broadcast, a dace studio, stages for theatre productios ad music performace, as well as a professioal art gallery. The Smith Ceter has three stages: the Jackso Theatre, a 400-seat prosceium theatre; the NUMMI Theatre, a itimate black box stage with adjustable seatig; ad the Ohloe College Outdoor Amphitheatre with a breathtakig view of the Bay Area. The Louie- Meager Art Gallery displays a wide rage of professioal art exhibits from Skateboard Art to Kietic Neo Sculpture. The televisio facilities provide stagig, shootig, postproductio, ad broadcast of ews ad etertaimet programmig. KOHL Radio is a popular Bay Area top-40 statio broadcastig o 89.3 FM. The Gary Sore Smith Ceter for the Fie ad Performig Arts is the largest performig arts theatre i the souther ed of the East Bay. Each seaso Smith Ceter Presets! offers professioal artist performaces; a childre s theatre series; Louie-Meager Art Gallery Exhibits; ad performaces by the Ohloe Music ad Theatre ad Dace Departmets. I additio, the Gary Sore Smith Ceter is the primary performace site for the Fremot Symphoy Orchestra. Ohloe Network Televisio (ONTV) With two fully equipped studios ad cotrol room, Ohloe College s Broadcastig Departmet offers istructio to studets for a career i televisio from istructors who have spet their careers workig i commercial televisio ews ad etertaimet. Studets use professioal grade Soy DV Cam ad Beta Cam cameras ad AVID digital editig equipmet. The departmet s AVID Xpress Elite No-Liear Editig Suite ad multiple AVID DV Editig Bays give studets the chace to receive extesive hads-o editig time ad to develop editig skills that are i short supply i the broadcast idustry. The Broadcastig Departmet s Live News Productio class produces a weekly ewscast throughout most of the academic year, broadcast live over ONTV Chael 28 i the cities of Fremot, Newark, ad Uio City. A Producig ad Directig Live Televisio class is also offered for studets iterested i the techical side of broadcastig, as well as a Live Productio Crew class i which studets cover live theatre, sportig, ad political evets. Radio Statio KOHL KOHL 89.3 FM is a commercial broadcast traiig program focusig o the busiess of radio broadcastig. KOHL is a 24-hour operatio with o-air staff primarily provided by studets i a cotrolled ad formatted broadcast lab eviromet. The statio s operatioal platform is a computer busiess software program fully itegrated with digital broadcastig equipmet cosidered state-of-the-art i the idustry. Kidergarte-12th grade studets must meet all course prerequisites to be eligible for erollmet; for courses i Eglish ad Math this usually requires that the studet take a Ohloe Placemet Test. Per Title 5 of the Califoria Code of Regulatios, Kidergarte-12th grade coursework may ot be used to waive college prerequisites. Paretal ad pricipal or school official approval is also required. Kidergarte-12th grade studets are exempt from payig the Califoria Commuity College Erollmet Fee, but are subject to payig the Electroic Access Fee, Health Services Fee, ad the optioal Studet Activities Fee. Studets who are erolled exclusively i classes located at off-campus sites are also exempt from the Electroic Access Fee, Health Services Fee, ad Studet Activities Fee. PLACEMENT TESTING Placemet Testig Ceter Buildig 7, secod floor, Room 7205 o the Fremot campus (510) Placemet Tests The Ohloe College placemet tests measure laguage, readig, ad math skills. All tests are computerized ad ot timed. The placemet tests are ot pass or fail tests ad are ot used to exclude studets from admissio to Ohloe. The placemet tests attempt to properly place studets i readig, writig, ad mathematics courses. The tests also idetify prerequisite preparatio (courses required before takig aother course). Ultimate placemet is ofte based o multiple criteria measures. Couselors ca also review other factors such as previous coursework ad ay other appropriate iformatio i order to place studets ito courses. Eglish as a Secod Laguage (ESL) Placemet Testig Before takig the ESL placemet test studets must submit a Ohloe College applicatio ad receive a Ohloe College studet ID umber. REGISTRATION INFORMATION Class Schedule The Ohloe College Class Schedule is produced twice a year (Summer/Fall ad Sprig). Registerig for Courses with Prerequisites May courses have prerequisites that must be successfully completed prior to erollmet. Studets registerig for courses that require prerequisites will be allowed to register for the course durig the term they are erolled i the prerequisite course, eve though fial grades have ot yet bee posted. However, oce fial grades are posted, studets must have completed the prerequisite course with a grade of C or better or they will be dropped from the course. Studets will ot be able to register for courses for which Ohloe does ot have record that they have successfully completed the course prerequisites. Durig the registratio period, studets may place themselves o a waitlist for specific classes that are filled. Durig the registratio process, if a class is full studets will be asked o WebAdvisor if they wat to add to the waitlist. If space becomes available i the class, studets o the waitlist will be added to the class ad otified by . Studets are added to the class from the waitlist i the order they were added to the waitlist. Studets may check their status o the waitlist via their WebAdvisor accout. There is o guaratee that studets o a waitlist will be added ito the class. Studets who have blocks prevetig registratio such as a outstadig balace, umet prerequisites, coflicts with aother class, overloads, or other academic issues will ot be added ito a class from the waitlist eve if space is available. These studets will remai o the waitlist util the issue prevetig registratio is resolved by the studet. Studets are restricted from waitlistig i more tha oe sectio of a class (a example would be ENGL-101A-01 ad ENGL-101A-02). WebAdvisor will allow a studet who is already registered i oe sectio of a class to waitlist i oe other sectio of the class. However, studets will ot be added ito the waitlisted class while they are still registered i a differet sectio of the same class. The studet must drop the registered class i order to be moved ito the ext available space i the waitlisted class. Studets who decide ot to take a class for which they are waitlisted must remove themselves from the waitlist. Studets are liable for ay fees ad grades received if they fail to remove themselves for the waitlist, ad are subsequetly registered from the waitlist.
