12 THE HISTORY Elpha House has been in the current owner s hands for 46 years. They acquired the home from their Aunt who had owned it since the 1920 s. Previously run as a Poultry farm, the current owners have since restored the property to its original glory, and beyond. This beautiful home is situated on North Road in Netherbeck, the oldest road in Carnforth, named as such due to its original use as the Road to the North. Charles II stayed locally in Borwick Hall in 1651 and his men camped in Baderholme, just down the lane from Elpha House. At the bottom of the garden of Elpha House was a watering hole that was frequently used by his men. The watering hole was purchased by the owners in the late 1970 s, a fabulous addition to the property. During the excavation of the grounds, an old road was uncovered which was possibly used prior to the industrial revolution, when the railway and canal were built. This home is literally surrounded by history; plenty to enthrall your visitors. The name Elpha is a Nordic derivative for Fairy Hill; a perfect name since parts of the garden have an almost fairy-like quality, with delicate flowers and beautiful walkways.
