3 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Kaan Ozdurak Liège-Guillemins Railway Station Rue Jonckeu This railway station was opened in 2008 and replaced a post-war building from the 1950's One reviewer described the building as a railway cathedral - and it is true The building seems to be a modern interpretation of the classic stations built during the industrial revolution Calatrava's dome has equal grandeur and similar dimensions (200m long, 35m high) The extensive use of white makes the station look not only more chicque than its 19th century predecessors; it gives the structure an airy, light-weight and almost delicate appearance Apart from its structure, one of the most surprising aspects is the station's nearly-complete openness towards the city centre Where most other stations know a clear division between inside and outside, this station extends the public square right into its heart photo: Dirk Verwoerd Architect Santiago Calatrava kaan 24/7 By train from Maastricht, Brussels or Aachen 3

4 Mediacité Boulevard Raymond Poincarré Liège Ron Arad Architects designed a new shopping mall within the 40,000m2 'Mediacite' development Situated in Liege, once the world's foremost centre of steel production and since in economic decline, the building stands out as a symbol of the city's revitalisation and strives to spearhead the city's regeneration The 350m long mall weaves through the fabric of the refurbished old market centre at one end, through the new two storey building, connecting to the new Belgian national television centre at the other The design of the roof unites these elements with a complex network of steel roof ribs that undulate through the mall The lattice of steel sculpts the volume of the mall beneath, varying both in height and structural depth to form a variety of differing experiences The steel ribs overhead, mirrored in the floor pattern, draw a sinuous pathway pulling you towards and through each of the zones, revealing diverse vistas that surprise along the way Floor area/size m² Architect, Interior architect Structural engineer Supplier Ron Arad goa Buro Happold Reynaers Aluminium Wilhelm & Co All days : h Friday : h Sunday closed 4

6 photo: Séverin Malaud photo: Séverin Malaud Delhaize - Quai de Rome Rue de Fragnee 51 Programmes of this type are notorious for producing mundane buildings - devoid of interest at best, and often outright urbicide The vision of MDW goes beyond the mere cosmetic upgrade of the decorated shed, asking: How can the designers of a supermarket quietly succeed in weaving part of the urban fabric? Situated in the middle of an elongated 180m long and largely paved city block, the project aims to improve the quality and permeability of the site, both for users of the building and for residents of the area In order to create a new public pedestrian crossing which splits the block, the existing building - which was due for demolition - is relocated to the edge of the plot The new building helps to upscale a difficult zone, enclosed between high party walls photo: Séverin Malaud Floor area/size m² Delhaize Group MDW_ARCHITECTURE 6
