2 photo: Lapo Ruffi photo: Lapo Ruffi D House Via Dalmazia Pistoia This is a modification of an existing block in north-west Pistoia near Florence A small detached grey stone staircase indicates the new access on a white plaster façade with perforated galvanized iron panels which act as a sunshade (and can be opened to 45, 90 or 180 ) and are a characteristic element of the new stylistic balance, as a chance variation on the elevation symmetry All the shared interior areas are treated with the same grey resin as the staircase to create an effect of visual uniformity There are 2 home units on each of the 3 floors: a living room overlooking the road, bathroom in the central area and bedrooms on the sides of the small inner courtyard Here the windows form an asymmetrical pattern of spaces and adjustable panels which create a dynamic appearance in a quiet space The architecture originates from the poetic synthesis of very few materials plaster, maple wood, galvanized iron, resin and stone which express a clear language when articulated in detail Project is not public! 3 photo: Fabio Capanni photo: Fabio Capanni La Fonte Gym Via Arrigo Boito Sesto Fiorentino Each and every project realized by Leonardo da Vinci, whether a building or a model air plane, was inspired by the human body As such, this gym on the outskirts of Sesto Fiorentino, near Florence, can be considered a tribute to Leonardo's work and genius The copper plates covering the exterior of the gym makes the building look like muscle fibre Thanks to the nail-less mounting, the plates are free to move and expand in accordance with one of copper's key characteristics Built to serve as a gym for a pre-existing town school, La Fonte is an independent building and can also be accessed by private users The space is organized in two simple orthogonal volumes, designed to be inexpensively prefabricated The main structure is made of pre-stressed concrete and is similar to the industrial hangars one finds in the Sesto Fiorentino area The smaller volume, clad with travertine is where changing rooms and utility rooms are located, whereas the bigger volume is used for sports photo: Fabio Capanni Public access unknown! 2006 Fabio Capanni Comune di Sesto Fiorentino Daria_Ricchi 3

4 Containing the Excess Viale Fratelli Rosselli Florence This is an exhibition titled Fashion and the Underground in the 80's It is made through an array of 'containers' like a Blade Runner city You will enter the show through a black filter/space It is dark, broken by a few luminous guide points, in which black containers face the viewer Walking among the piles of containers, guided by light and music, you will discover the displays that hold the scenes and the glamour of those years of excess A city of more than 40 containers with 100 garments and things, furniture, music and film not only from the glorious and muddy decade, and also from now, the Neo '80s Project is public! 5 photo: Studio Archea Municipal Library Via Ronchetti Nembro Galileo Chini, one of the few artists of the new Liberty movement to have made his name in Florence, is associated in particular with ceramics He was the inspiration in this library by Florence-based Archea The project concerns the extension of an existing, c-shaped building which was erected in 1897 as a primary school When Nembro's city council decided to convert it into a library, a new wing was inserted in the opening in the 'C', forming an open-air court The new wing is completely different from the old structure It is a wholly transparent glass volume surrounded by a second façade of 40x40 cm red glazed earthenware tiles held in place by a framework of steel profiles, a construction method that enables the tiles to rotate and so act as a sunscreen for the glazed inner façades The result is a distinctive 'screen' wall in which closed and open planes alternate in a continuous pattern created by the rotating ceramic elements photo: Studio Archea Project is public! 2007 Structural engineer Supplier Studio Archea MAP Sannini Impruneta Nembro Municipality Daria_Ricchi Monday through friday: / Saturday: /

6 via Pisana via Pisana Florence The via Pisana project, in Florence, occupies three blocks beside the Arno, and uses vacant space in the core of a block occupied by an old gas reservoir no longer in use In spite of the charm of the place in its partly abandoned state, the architects chose to concentrate on new ways of living in the area rather than on conserving traces of the past Designed to fit a low budget, their proposal comprises both the rehabilitation of existing buildings and a carefully designed extension to suit the scale of the local urban fabric Laid out around laneways, patios and galleries, the nine dwellings extend, in their rear courts, private spaces that make no effort at representation Clearly, the rapprochement between old structures and new additions holds to a similarity of form of access, the shape of a stairwell or that of a terrace Everything is formulated in sober manner The dwellings range from 50 to 100 square meters in area, and some have rooftop terrace Project is not public! 7 photo: Evan Chakroff photo: Evan Chakroff San Giovanni Battista Church Via di Limite Campi Bisenzio Formally named after John the Baptist, this church has also earned the name Church of the Freeway of the Sun for its location between the Autostrada del Sole (Freeway of the Sun) and the A11 Firenze-Mare Highway The design of the church is meant to reflect both modern and traditional church design The 'cross' floor plan and stone facing are meant to evoke a traditional feel while the tent-like vertical elements and copper roofing reflect modern design tastes The church stands 27,5 metres high The materials used are stone and concrete for the walls and copper for the roof, oxidized to green on the outside and burnished blond on the inside Marble, glass and bronze are used for the interior elements The building's floor plan is asymmetrical and follows sinuous curves, creating a feeling of fluid space One of the intentions to build the church was to honor the workers who had died during construction of the freeway photo: Evan Chakroff Project is public! 1963 Giovanni Michelucci evanc 7
