2 photo: Thomas Mayer photo: Thomas Mayer Zollverein Design School Gelsenkirchener Straße Essen As the first new building on the grounds of the Zollverein World Heritage site, the Zollverein School will provide ground-breaking impetus for the future transformation of the former industrial complex into a design location with international reach The building will also enhance the urban planning value of the surrounding districts in the northern part of Essen and the Ruhr The sharp-edged bright, light grey 34 high cube looks both powerful and lightweight at the same time The design is characterized by extreme purism The formal closed appearance of the over-sized cube is broken up by the irregular arrangement of windows It comprises four storeys (four levels and a rooftop garden) of different ceiling heights There are few supporting structures and all of the building technology is hidden in the walls and ceilings As a Far Eastern counterpart to the austere Bauhaus style, the building radiates an almost poetic power photo: Thomas Mayer Client SANAA Entwicklungsgesellschaft Zollverein mbh MI_MOA There are guided tours on every last Friday in the month at 4 pm, lasting 1 hour, and will cover all storeys including the roof garden Costs are 6 per person Because guided tours are limited to 20 people, you are kindly requested to register Please send an to wiegel@zeitsprung-agenturde Visits for groups over 20 people can be arranged separately The ground floor of the building is open to public form Monday to Friday between 8 am and 6 pm Closed on Saturday & Sunday From Essen central station, use the Tramway 107 and get off at stop Zollverein The nearest airport is Duesseldorf 2

6 photo: IFM Glückaufhaus Friedrichstraße Essen Just in time for Culture Capital RUHR2010 the restructuring of the office building 'Glückaufhaus' is completed The office building was built in the early 20s designed by the architect Ernst Bode The new building covering with a charcoal-colored aluminum and glass construction constitutes a unifying element to the historic brick facade of the 'Glückaufhaus' The "open" courtyard of the building to the pocket park forms the center of the entire arrangement photo: IFM m² ruhrpottler 6

7 Westside Essen Paul-Klinger-Straße Essen The u-shaped building is located in the Weststadt quarter in Essen It is is closed by a glass facade against a busy road to protect the courtyard garden from being too noisy The metal cladding in silver is complemented by a precast concrete facade with ornamental surface m² ruhrpottler 7

9 RAG Montan Immobilien Kokerei Zollverein Im Welterbe Essen Being the worldwide first new build development on an UNESCO World Heritage site, the headquarter for RAG Montan Immobilien (montane real estate) has been completed by the beginning of 2012 The building offers workplace for 250 staff and was planned to meet green building standards The H-shaped plan provides two wings of offices at a height of two and three stories linked by glazed communicative areas such as staircases, elevators, lobbies on both entrance levels and tea-point hubs for the use of communicative breaks for the employees A spacious roof terrace with a nice view to the UNESCO World Heritage and the green patio alongside the bistro enables the employees to take flexible and restful breaks m² ruhrpottler 9
