photo: Kontraframedk photo: Dragør luftfoto Sluseholmen Sluseholmen Copenhagen The idea for a canal district on Sluseholmen originated with the Dutch architect Sjoerd Soeters, who used his experiences from Java Island, a residential district built on an artificial island in Amsterdam And the Dutch inspiration is obvious Newly dug canals form the basic structure The new canal district was built on eight artificial islands with a pattern of continuous blocks with sheltered courtyards The unified plan's dogmas comprise a unifying principle for Sluseholmen, but at the same time they ensure that it will be a quarter with great variety, where each building will have its individual distinctive features In order to create this diversity, 25 offices were asked to design the buildings The canals and quays, crossed by bridges, wind through the quarter and will make Sluseholmen a different and highly varied part of Copenhagen photo: Kontraframedk Project is public! 2010 Main designer, Urban planner, Urban planner Soeters Van Eldonk architecten Copenhagen_X Arkitema City of Copenhagen Busses 4A and

photo: Richard Davies photo: Richard Davies Elephant House Roskildevej Copenhagen Norman Foster's elephant house has elevated Copenhagen Zoo to the first division of the architectural world At Copenhagen Zoo Norman Foster once again uses his signature: the gigantic glass canopy The elephant house thus has two large domes in the roof The house is partially submerged in the ground, and the public can stroll across the roof and look down onto the elephants' indoor quarters, which will receive plenty of daylight through the domes From the outset the idea has been to make the new house light and welcoming, unlike many other elephant houses The new elephant house is part of the overall effort to soft-focus the boundary between the Zoo and Frederiksberg Park Unsightly fencing and hoardings will be removed, and from Frederiksberg Park it will be possible to enjoy watching the herd of elephants The environs of the elephant house have been executed by the Danish landscape architect Stig L Andersson Project is not public! m² Main designer, Landscape architect Foster & Partners SLA Copenhagen Zoo Copenhagen_X photo: Richard Davies Parking at Roskildevej and Søndre Fasanvej Bicycle parking by the main entrance of the Zoo Busses: 4A, 6A, 26, and 832 Nearest metro stations are Frederiksberg and Fasanvej about 15 minutes' walk from the zoo For timetables, visit wwwrejseplanendk 11

photo: Piotr Krajewski photo: Piotr Krajewski Fyrtrnet Pakhusvej Copenhagen The Lighthouse (Fyrtrnet) marks the entrance to the new residential area on Amerika Plads With its 48 meters and 15 stories, the residential complex is also highly visible both from the city and from the water Its design is also unusual The tallest part has a distinctive stepped shape on the south, growing narrower toward the top, where it ends in two-story penthouses In addition to the tall tower, the complex consists of a six-story building with a common roof terrace These two buildings hold 89 condos between 90 and 160 sq m Both the tower and its neighbor are covered with expanses of dark-gray slate, interrupted on the low building by large bays and balconies along Kalkbrænderihavnsgade The choice fell on gray slate since it provides a varied play of color and at the same time harmonizes with the area's old brick buildings with slate roofs photo: Piotr Krajewski Project is not public! 2007 Lundgaard & Tranberg Arkitektfirma Amerika Plads ApS pkrajewski_pl 13

photo: Piotr Krajewski photo: Piotr Krajewski Harbour Isle Apartments Havneholmen Copenhagen The residential project occupies a unique location on a harbour island in a former industrial area, close to both park areas and the centre of Copenhagen To make best of the exceptional location, the project is divided into smaller building volumes, relating to views, solar exposure, and harbour In addition to providing unobstructed view sight lines for each unit, the design creates a variation in apartment types and the corresponding balconies Staggered projecting bays with corner windows provide panoramas of harbour and city, while also screening views from neighbours, insuring the privacy of each apartment The project consists of 236 exclusive apartments with an average area of 101 m2/1087 ft2, consisting primarily of two and three bedroom apartments, a small portion of which are two levels The entire project, including the projecting bays, is rendered in warm white stucco, while the fenestration has teak profiles Project is not public! m² Technical engineer Lundgaard & Tranberg Arkitektfirma Niras Sjælsø Gruppen pkrajewski_pl photo: Piotr Krajewski 14

photo: Piotr Krajewski photo: Piotr Krajewski Statens Museum for Kunst Sølvgade Copenhagen The old museum building dates back to 1896 and was designed by the architect Vilhelm Dahlerup The museum was short of space from the very beginning It was not until 1970, however, that the amount of floor space available for exhibitions was increased This was done by roofing two atrium wells in the middle of the museum The 1998 extension has provided the museum with a significant - and much-needed - increase in the exhibition space available The magnificent, modernist extension building is situated in parallel with Dahlerup's old museum, opening the house up towards the surrounding parkland The architect created the new architecture The two widely different buildings are separate entities, yet linked by a glass-roofed Sculpture Street, with footbridges connecting the first floors The two buildings meet and merge in a single fluid movement while also clearly demarcating their distinctive characters and the architectural differences between them Project is public! 1998 C F Møller s Statens Museum for Kunst photo: Frankss pkrajewski_pl Tuesdays-Sundays 10 am-5 pm ; Wednesdays 10 am-8 pm ; Mondays closed Bus routes: 6A, 14, 26, 40, 42, 43, 184, 185, 150S, 173 E Trains: S-trains and regional trains to Øster- port and Nørreport Stations Metro: Nørreport and Kgs Nytorv Stations Bicycles: Øster Voldgade and Sølvgade Parking:At Stockholmsgade and Øster Voldgade parking fee Sunday free of charge 15

photo: Jens Lindhe photo: Jens Lindhe Boligslangen Tom Kristensens Vej Copenhagen Boligslangen (literally 'the housing serpent') is Ørestad's biggest residential-housing project, which will consist of nearly 300 housing units and a day-care center In several places, the 'serpent' intertwines with the canal that runs through the area from Copenhagen University, past the Danish Broadcasting Corporation's media center, and out into a little lake, Grønjordssøen What is special about this complex is that a single roof covers two separate apartment houses: Fælledhaven, which holds public-housing units, and Universitetshaven, with condos and co-ops Fælledhaven's design placed more emphasis than most public housing on flexibility and resident influence For example, room partitions can be set up in different ways, depending on how many rooms the resident wants Universitetshaven consists of 2 buildings, their common roof crossing the opening between them and maintaining the impression of one long 'serpent' (text by cphxdk) Project is not public! m² Technical engineer Contractor Landscape designer Domus Architekter Hamiconsult A/S NCC Construction A/S Peter Holst MAA MD FSBbolig, Ørestad Nord HJI photo: Jens Lindhe Take the metro to the university-district You can find more information on

photo: Triarc Arkitekter photo: Triarc Arkitekter Thorsgade Student Housing Thorsgade Copenhagen The form of the project takes it's origin in the curved course of the street The building follows this geometry, and is accentuated through the horizontal lines of the façade The tall and slim windows appear to be sub-divided visually by a horizontal steel profile that supports the glass parapets in front of the balcony doors The closed areas of the façade are clad in Rockpanel, using colours that vary in rhythm, according to the division of the balcony doors and windows The ground floor contains spaces for social interaction; study spaces, a common dining-area and social facilities Further along, on the residential floors of the building, the student's quarters gather around a double-height library that provides an additional space for communal studying, bridging the living quarters with social contact areas The library provides a clear visual marking of the building's façade to the street, as well as a visual identity to the surrounding area photo: Triarc Arkitekter Project is not public! 2005, Interior architect, Landscape architect, Urban planner Triarc Arkitekter triarc private 20

photo: Jacob Gallt photo: Jacob Gallt Frøsilos Islands Brygge Copenhagen 'Unusual yet obvious' is the best way to describe MVRDV's conversion of two grain silos on the harbour front of Copenhagen into high-end housing for the fortunate few The brief suggested filling up the circular silo spaces with apartment floors MVRDV chose to go the other way about the task and hang the apartments on the outside of the silo walls as a second skin of glass, creating very light and almost outdoor living spaces The silo interiors remain as an industrial version of the atrium, roofed with translucent plastic A prime motivation for this inside-out solution was the relative fragility of the old silo walls MVRDV regarded the structural weakness of the concrete tubes as a serious limitation because it made it difficult to cut large holes in the walls for windows, without endangering the structural integrity The 84 apartments now range from around 90 to 200 square metres and the balconies add roughly one third to that as outdoor living space photo: Jacob Gallt Public access unknown! 2005 MVRDV NCC Rasmus_Rune_Nielsen 22

photo: Niels Nygaard photo: Niels Nygaard Copper Tower Pakhusvej Copenhagen The 16-story Copper Tower (Kobbertårnet) stands at the northern entrance to Copenhagen Harbor Over the years, the distinctive building with rounded corners will change appearance As the salty winds from the Sound meet the façade s copper, its color gradually changed from its original flaming red to a more subdued dark brown in late 2005 In the course of the next score of years, large parts of the façade will turn the characteristic verdigris familiar from other towers and roofs in Copenhagen The concept of a copper tower was part of the unified plan for the North Harbor conceived by the Dutch architect Adriaan Geuze, who originally dreamed of a tower of towers to rise high above the harbor and consequently expand the copper-covered part of Copenhagen s skyline (from cphxdk) photo: Niels Nygaard Project is not public! m² Arkitema Port of Copenhagen and TK Development MI_MOA Amerika Plads is conveniently located close to the S train stations Østerport and Nordhavn Or take bus 26 from the city centre 23

photo: Torben Eskerod photo: Torben Eskerod The Bikuben Student Residence Amager Fælledvej Copenhagen Loneliness and lack of social relations are major problems for many students Bikuben student residence provides the framework for the study years and improves the possibilities of a community spirit emerging in a widespread social network The main shape is very serene and conveys in itself the hostel's founding principles of community and equality To provide the greatest possible contact between common and private rooms, while at the same time ensuring the privacy of each residence, the residences and the common rooms are connected in a double spiral surrounding an atrium Thus, the limitations of the student's living quarters are widened to incorporate the entire building and the social contact areas, and the freedom of the individual is considered to a maximum degree Concrete tectonics and social responsibility merge, and the building is embedded in its place and alters its conditions photo: Torben Eskerod Project is not public! m², Landscape architect Structural engineer Lighting designer aart aart Rambøll Viera Collaro Kollegiefonden Bikuben 26

Just minutes from the centre of Copenhagen by Metro With the new Amager Strand Beach having been inaugurated, this is now a reality Amager Strand Beach consists of the beach along the coastal road, Amager Strandvej, a lagoon, an island and the two parks 10-øren and 5-øren (the Danish 10 Øre and 5 Øre coins) The island is 2 km long and the lagoon is 400 metres at its widest point Beach stations have been sited in the middle of the island; these are concrete buildings with toilets, refreshment kiosks and so on These beach stations also act as lookout and vantage points, providing a fantastic view of the large vessels plying the Øresund Sound and Øresund Bridge or the planes preparing to land in Kastrup The new island has been bisected, so that in the north you encounter a landscape of sand dunes, only to find more park-like grounds in the south photo: Amager Strand Project is public! , Urban planner Hasløv & Kjærsgaard Arkitektfirma Amager Strandpark I/S, City of Copenhagen, Frederiksberg Municipality, Copenhagen County Copenhagen_X Amager Beach is situated along Amager Strandvej in Copenhagen You can easily get there by bike from the center of the city Another possibility is to take the Metro to Lergravsparken Station and then walk 15 minutes along Øresundsvej You can also go by bus number 12 from Copenhagen Airport or from the bus terminal at the City Hall 27

photo: seier+seier photo: seier+seier Paustian Kalkbrænderiløbskaj Copenhagen The Paustian furniture house on the waterfront in Copenhagen was inspired by the typical Danish beech forest with its tall, slim trunks "We often took a trip to a forest or a beach during the creative part of our work Mainly because my father sees issues more clearly when he talks them through with us on a walk in some beautiful natural setting," explains architect Jan Utzon, who collaborated with his father on the project "A walk in a Danish beech forest is like walking through a peristyle The underlying idea in the Paustian building became its many columns, sometimes grouped close together, at other times further apart Sunlight is shed down by skylights in the roof onto the various floors" The inside is just as exciting; the finest furniture designs by designers Aalto, Eames and Le Corbusier The Copenhagen Harbor later commissioned the Utzons to design 2 additional buildings: a Sail Club and "Lakajen", a restaurant and an office building photo: seier+seier Project is public! 1987 Main designer, Jørn Utzon Jan Utzon Kim Utzon Ole Paustian Andrew 28

photo: Maarten Helle photo: Maarten Helle Office Halfdansgade Halfdansgade Copenhagen The overall idea was to create a small, but exceptional building that will contribute and respond to the area context by repeating the existing ridge roof skyline By repeating and twisting this skyline concept, we challenge the general public's perception of the Copenhagen skyline It's a minor urban statement, that contributes to the on-going discussion on the city and its context About The building works well either as a single tenant facility with the ground floor designed for Reception and Conference Center or alternately, as a multi-tenant building with a shared lobby by the main stair A spacious dining facility is located in the adjacent building The focus for the design at Halfdansgade has been to create a flexible and inspiring environment photo: Maarten Helle Project is not public! m² Danielsen s HelleBeelden 103

This is what the sales literature says about Metropolis, a 40-metre-tall residential building And its round shapes, radiant light-blue colour, and organic look make the description pretty apt The building is surrounded by water on three sides on Sluseholmen's outermost peninsula, which was expanded by about 2,000 square metres of landfill Metropolis commands a distinctive, yet solitary position opposite the rows of new housing blocks and the snug little Valby Boat club lining the waterfront on Sluseholmen photo: Maarten Helle Project is not public! m² Danielsen s HelleBeelden 106

photo: Frankss photo: Frankss Kulturhus Nordvest Rentemestervej Copenhagen The northwest area in Copenhagen is located between the lively and diverse urban neighborhood of Nørrebro and the villa neighborhoods at the edge of the city Many people live and work in this multiethnic area Yet, since the area is located in the vicinity to numerous entry roads, most Copenhageners only use Nordvest as passage when going in and out of the city by car The Culture House and Library tries to help improve the identity of the area It is designed to create a landmark and to provide a meeting point for the local community The new culture house consists of 4 functions, stacked on top of each other like a series of golden books Each "book" is a world of its own with individual interiors and furnishment The spaces between are open zones for flexible use The foyer and zone between the existing building and the extension act as an urban passage for the neighborhood The concert hall is placed on top of the building A powerful object that seems to defy gravity photo: Frankss Project is public! m² Main designer, Landscape architect Contractor Building physics consultant Transform COBE Schønherr Landskabsarkitekter Brdr Andersen, Randers A/S Wessberg Københavns Kommune Franks Weekdays: from 8AM till 10 PM Weekend: from 8AM till 3 PM From København H, take bus 5A and get out at Hulgårds Plads This bus ride will take about half an hour From there walk to the west and turn right on the Tomsgårdsvej Walk 250m and you will find the center on your left hand 107

photo: Adrian Ewig Headquarters on Langelinie Langelinie Alle Copenhagen The vision was to create an environmentally sustainable, forward-looking corporate headquarters with a distinct architectural expression The 'bastion' is removed from the building, giving an additional floor and achieving a holistic integration building geometry, construction principles, and interior climate concept, all while minimizing floor deck height and maximizing room height The addition of an extra level allows for a continuous atrium rising through all levels, furnished with 'hanging gardens' of meeting and lounge platforms, bridges, and open stairs Two vertical service cores define the atrium; one core is 'green', covered in climbing plants, the other core is 'blue', with full-height water-art The facades, homogeneous bands of brickwork perforated by a net of openings, are marked by large, lone apertures in the forms of portals, bay windows, and dormers photo: Adrian Ewig Public access unknown! 2014 Lundgaard & Tranberg Arkitektfirma AdrianEwig 118

photo: Adrian Ewig Vodroffsvej Vodroffsvej 2A 1900 Copenhagen When the building at Vodroffsvej was completed in 1929, it created a stir in the public debate The horizontal band of windows, the flat roof and the layered façade in yellow and red brick were not the typical features of Danish buildings at the time Instead, the style was inspired by The Bauhaus School and the European modernism that thrived in the Netherlands and Germany The modernist style of the 1930s is known as functionalism in Scandinavia and is characterized by clearly marked horizontal lines and corner windows made possible by the constructional progress The block consists of two wings gathering in a point at the one end The one wing facing the lake has six floors, the other wing holds five Due to the uneven terrain the levels of the block shift, so that the windows in the one wing intersect with the brick façade of the other wing The building houses 18 apartments and originally seven shops photo: Adrian Ewig Project is not public! 1930 Main designer, Kay Fisker C F Møller s AdrianEwig 120

Pelican Self Storage Kalkbaenderihavnsgade Copenhagen Tetris is developing a self storage building in Copenhagen Entasis is attached to the assignment as an architect, as the municipality has asked for a project oriented towards the potential of the entire area The basic idea of the building is to introduce a volume that fits in the existing urban context The building is placed solitary and adapted to the site's wedged shape To substantiate the contextual relationship, horizontal lines from the surrounding buildings are adapted into the new building as cuts, undercuts, prints and alignment This means that the building will have different heights and inclining surfaces In a desire to create a gate between the new building and the neighbor, the facing brick facade is used as a transformed motif in the new facade design This transformation means 'stretching' the motif to fit the length of the new facade The windows will be also will be walled up, and the facade will stand as a reflection of his neighbor photo: Adrian Ewig Public access unknown! 2012 entasis AdrianEwig 122

photo: Adrian Ewig Hotel Astoria Banegaardspladsen Copenhagen The building was designed as a station hotel for the Danish State Railways The hotel was built from 1934 to 1935 as the first luxury hotel in Copenhagen The hotel consists of a long slender wing forming a barrier between the courtyard in front of the main entrance to the Central Station, which partly opens to the underground rail lines, and Reventlowsgade, the street on the Vesterbro side of the station An example of 'architecture parlante', the building is intended to resemble a steam locomotive, with its connotations of travel and movement encapsulating the essence of the site, and as an expression of the fascination with progress and technology which was typical of the time It consists of an expressive constellation of cubist volumes, culminating in the narrow facade looking out over Vesterbrogade which is topped by a "hood ornament" in the shape of a winged wheel bearing a crown, a sculptural representation of the old logo of the Danish State Railways Project is public! 1935 Ole Falkentorp AdrianEwig photo: Adrian Ewig 123
