4 photo: Richard Davies photo: Richard Davies Elephant House Roskildevej Copenhagen Norman Foster's elephant house has elevated Copenhagen Zoo to the first division of the architectural world At Copenhagen Zoo Norman Foster once again uses his signature: the gigantic glass canopy The elephant house thus has two large domes in the roof The house is partially submerged in the ground, and the public can stroll across the roof and look down onto the elephants' indoor quarters, which will receive plenty of daylight through the domes From the outset the idea has been to make the new house light and welcoming, unlike many other elephant houses The new elephant house is part of the overall effort to soft-focus the boundary between the Zoo and Frederiksberg Park Unsightly fencing and hoardings will be removed, and from Frederiksberg Park it will be possible to enjoy watching the herd of elephants The environs of the elephant house have been executed by the Danish landscape architect Stig L Andersson Project is not public! 5 photo: Kontraframedk photo: Dragør luftfoto Sluseholmen Sluseholmen Copenhagen The idea for a canal district on Sluseholmen originated with the Dutch architect Sjoerd Soeters, who used his experiences from Java Island, a residential district built on an artificial island in Amsterdam And the Dutch inspiration is obvious Newly dug canals form the basic structure The new canal district was built on eight artificial islands with a pattern of continuous blocks with sheltered courtyards The unified plan's dogmas comprise a unifying principle for Sluseholmen, but at the same time they ensure that it will be a quarter with great variety, where each building will have its individual distinctive features In order to create this diversity, 25 offices were asked to design the buildings The canals and quays, crossed by bridges, wind through the quarter and will make Sluseholmen a different and highly varied part of Copenhagen photo: Kontraframedk 2010 Main designer, Urban planner, Urban planner Soeters Van Eldonk architecten Copenhagen_X Arkitema City of Copenhagen Busses 4A and
6 photo: Jens Lindhe photo: Jens Lindhe Crèche Krausesvej Krausesvej Copenhagen The local plan allowed for only one story to be built on the site, which was to be used for a day-care center The architectural challenges were to create enough space inside and out for employees and 36 children on a fairly small site, to ensure enough light for the institution, which is bounded by apartment buildings five and six stories tall, to keep the new building from taking light and air from the neighbours, and especially to create a style that would harmonize with the surroundings The project met the many physical and functional challenges in an almost pragmatic way The institution covers nearly the whole site except for a single incision, which lets daylight into the building, on the one hand, and leaves room for an enclosed outdoor space on street level, on the other It was designed around two parallel slabs One is the ground and the other is the roof, which is used for outdoor recreational space that is nearly as large as the institution's c 530 sq m of indoor space photo: Jens Lindhe Project is not public! 7 photo: Piotr Krajewski photo: Piotr Krajewski Harbour Isle Apartments Havneholmen Copenhagen The residential project occupies a unique location on a harbour island in a former industrial area, close to both park areas and the centre of Copenhagen To make best of the exceptional location, the project is divided into smaller building volumes, relating to views, solar exposure, and harbour In addition to providing unobstructed view sight lines for each unit, the design creates a variation in apartment types and the corresponding balconies Staggered projecting bays with corner windows provide panoramas of harbour and city, while also screening views from neighbours, insuring the privacy of each apartment The project consists of 236 exclusive apartments with an average area of 101 m2/1087 ft2, consisting primarily of two and three bedroom apartments, a small portion of which are two levels The entire project, including the projecting bays, is rendered in warm white stucco, while the fenestration has teak profiles Project is not public! 8 photo: Jens Lindhe photo: Jens Lindhe Boligslangen Tom Kristensens Vej Copenhagen Boligslangen (literally 'the housing serpent') is Ørestad's biggest residential-housing project, which will consist of nearly 300 housing units and a day-care center In several places, the 'serpent' intertwines with the canal that runs through the area from Copenhagen University, past the Danish Broadcasting Corporation's media center, and out into a little lake, Grønjordssøen What is special about this complex is that a single roof covers two separate apartment houses: Fælledhaven, which holds public-housing units, and Universitetshaven, with condos and co-ops Fælledhaven's design placed more emphasis than most public housing on flexibility and resident influence For example, room partitions can be set up in different ways, depending on how many rooms the resident wants Universitetshaven consists of 2 buildings, their common roof crossing the opening between them and maintaining the impression of one long 'serpent' (text by cphxdk) Project is not public! 9 photo: Torben Eskerod photo: Torben Eskerod The Bikuben Student Residence Amager Fælledvej Copenhagen Loneliness and lack of social relations are major problems for many students Bikuben student residence provides the framework for the study years and improves the possibilities of a community spirit emerging in a widespread social network The main shape is very serene and conveys in itself the hostel's founding principles of community and equality To provide the greatest possible contact between common and private rooms, while at the same time ensuring the privacy of each residence, the residences and the common rooms are connected in a double spiral surrounding an atrium Thus, the limitations of the student's living quarters are widened to incorporate the entire building and the social contact areas, and the freedom of the individual is considered to a maximum degree Concrete tectonics and social responsibility merge, and the building is embedded in its place and alters its conditions photo: Torben Eskerod Project is not public! 11 photo: seier+seier photo: seier+seier Sømærk Peter Holms Vej Copenhagen On the Teglholmen Island in Sydhavnen (the Southern Harbour), a new housing area is taking shape Sømærk refers to a navigation mark, the project consists of 118 flats, half social housing and half private, and a communal house Result of a 2003 competition which had an unusual brief: the CPH harbour authorities had donated an area of water for the competition as they wanted a model project to boost development The money saved from not having to buy land could instead pay for a large landfill that would accommodate buildings and cars The proposal was to forget the landfill and to build an artificial island in the form of a one-story parking house to get rid of the cars that plague the spaces between our houses and to get closer to the water The spaces between the houses and the wooden decks around the parking island encourage swimming, fishing, kayaking - and the great thing was that when the first residents moved in this spring, there were people fishing from their balconies Project is not public! 2008 Tegnestuen Vandkunsten SAB and Finansgruppen Nordic Copenhagen_X photo: seier+seier The easiest way to get to Sømærk is by car Otherwise, one might take the S-train to Sydhavn Station From here it is 15 minutes on foot to Sømærk 11

13 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Danish Jewish Museum Proviantpassagen 6 DK-1218 Copenhagen The Jewish concept Mitzvah, "a good deed", is of central significance to Daniel Libeskind's architecture for the museum The Hebrew word Mitzvah is literally stamped in the building: the letters in gigantic sizes form the walking area of the museum, in which the visitors move Danish Jews were saved through the effort of their compatriots and neighbors during the tragic years of the war In this way the Danish Jewish Museum differs from other European Jewish Museums, the history is manifested in the form, structure and light The museum is located in the Royal Boat House built by King Christian IV, transformed into the Royal Library, and now shared with the Jewish Museum The entrance lies in the courtyard, and is marked with conversation spaces, stones that appear to be lying around, random placed The interior has a very Libeskind-like structure, in this case a theatre like décor for all material the museum collects, which can document significant aspects of Jewish life in Floor area/size m² Daniel Libeskind Danish Jewish Museum NGHM photo: Naomi Schiphorst Winter: Tuesday to Friday: 1 pm - 4 pm, Saturday and Sunday: 12 noon - 5 pm, Monday closed Summer: (1 June - 31 August), Tuesday to Sunday: 10 am - 5 pm, Monday closed The museum is located in the Royal Library garden, behind the big black library When it is closed: look for the small concrete grey door in the green wall of the Royal Library Public transport: Buslines 1A, 2A, 15, 26, 29 to Højbro Plads 66 to The Royal Library, Christians Brygge Closest metro station: Kongens Nytorv, 10 minutes walk 13

18 photo: Kontraframedk photo: Kontraframedk Meatpacking District Kødboderne Copenhagen The White section of the Copenhagen Meat Market is rapidly changing Recently artists, designers, photographers and filmmakers have moved into the vacant premises where sharp butcher's knives slashed the air not long ago Several of the formerly locked gates are now open at night Refrigeration rooms are being converted into darkrooms and skylights are being cleared The plan of turning the White section of the Meat Market into the city's creative haven has begun to materialise The vision of a new cultural melting pot in the centrally located Vesterbro district was conceived some years ago The site, which is rife with history and features a rough, pulsating vibrancy, has long been the only unconquered bastion in the district: an almost secret city within the city that only few people outside the food industry know really well Attractions in the area include several art galleries as well as the Karriere bar photo: Kontraframedk 2007 Urban planner Mutopia City of Copenhagen Copenhagen_X 4 minutes on foot from Dybbølsbro station (S train) 10 minutes from Copenhagen central station 18

20 photo: HJ Imhoff photo: HJ Imhoff Copenhagen Metro Stations Nørreport Jagtvej DK-2200 Copenhagen There are 22 stations on the existing Metro network Nine of these are underground; of these, six are deep level while three are just below the ground They all have a timeless and similar design by KHR architekter, and can be recognized by a five-metre-tall information column in front of the stations All the stations are 60 metres long and 20 metres wide, with the exception of Nørreport station which is 80 metres long to allow a link to the previously-existing S-train platforms On street level, the underground stations can be recognized by glass pyramids They are used to cast light down into the station areas In this way there will always be daylight underground There are prisms in the pyramids which intensify the light , Urban planner KHR architekter Metroselskabet HJI photo: HJ Imhoff The Metro runs daily between 5 am and 12 pm Thursday, Friday and during the weekend, the Metro also runs all night We've put the placemark on the map at Nørreport, from where you walk out of the tunnel station into a large shopping area Five minutes walk and you will find yourself in green breathing areas or at one of Copenhagen s plenty museums See for more stations and maps Lines M1 and M2 pass this station 20
21 photo: Torben Eskerod photo: Torben Eskerod Sports and Culture Centre Holmbladsgade Copenhagen The boldness of this project lies in the simple idea of making a new kind of crossover building between the traditional typology of the indoor sports arena and the outdoor sports field The formal idea of connecting the new building to four housing blocks seems to suggest that the building is at once a continuation of the built fabric of the neighborhood -and as such, an interior spacebut also an outdoor public space The polycarbonate skin is a very unusual feature in Looking at the result, the effort appears to have been well worthwhile since it is the translucent skin that makes this sports facility so unique Normally, natural light is a rare visitor in indoor sports facilities where artificial lighting is most often preferred in order to secure an even distribution of light In this project, the skin allows for an even distribution of natural light that gives a much warmer feel to this space This is further enhanced by the use of wood as part of the visible structure photo: Torben Eskerod Floor area/size m² Main designer, Dorte Mandrup s B&K+brandlhuber&co City of Copenhagen & The Danish Foundation for Culture and Sports Facilities Rasmus_Rune_Nielsen 21
22 photo: Triarc Arkitekter photo: Triarc Arkitekter Thorsgade Student Housing Thorsgade Copenhagen The form of the project takes it's origin in the curved course of the street The building follows this geometry, and is accentuated through the horizontal lines of the façade The tall and slim windows appear to be sub-divided visually by a horizontal steel profile that supports the glass parapets in front of the balcony doors The closed areas of the façade are clad in Rockpanel, using colours that vary in rhythm, according to the division of the balcony doors and windows The ground floor contains spaces for social interaction; study spaces, a common dining-area and social facilities Further along, on the residential floors of the building, the student's quarters gather around a double-height library that provides an additional space for communal studying, bridging the living quarters with social contact areas The library provides a clear visual marking of the building's façade to the street, as well as a visual identity to the surrounding area photo: Triarc Arkitekter Project is not public! 2005, Interior architect, Landscape architect, Urban planner Triarc Arkitekter triarc private 22

Just minutes from the centre of Copenhagen by Metro With the new Amager Strand Beach having been inaugurated, this is now a reality Amager Strand Beach consists of the beach along the coastal road, Amager Strandvej, a lagoon, an island and the two parks 10-øren and 5-øren (the Danish 10 Øre and 5 Øre coins) The island is 2 km long and the lagoon is 400 metres at its widest point Beach stations have been sited in the middle of the island; these are concrete buildings with toilets, refreshment kiosks and so on These beach stations also act as lookout and vantage points, providing a fantastic view of the large vessels plying the Øresund Sound and Øresund Bridge or the planes preparing to land in Kastrup The new island has been bisected, so that in the north you encounter a landscape of sand dunes, only to find more park-like grounds in the south photo: Amager Strand , Urban planner Hasløv & Kjærsgaard Arkitektfirma Amager Strandpark I/S, City of Copenhagen, Frederiksberg Municipality, Copenhagen County Copenhagen_X Amager Beach is situated along Amager Strandvej in Copenhagen You can easily get there by bike from the center of the city Another possibility is to take the Metro to Lergravsparken Station and then walk 15 minutes along Øresundsvej You can also go by bus number 12 from Copenhagen Airport or from the bus terminal at the City Hall 27

29 photo: Jacob Gallt photo: Jacob Gallt Frøsilos Islands Brygge Copenhagen 'Unusual yet obvious' is the best way to describe MVRDV's conversion of two grain silos on the harbour front of Copenhagen into high-end housing for the fortunate few The brief suggested filling up the circular silo spaces with apartment floors MVRDV chose to go the other way about the task and hang the apartments on the outside of the silo walls as a second skin of glass, creating very light and almost outdoor living spaces The silo interiors remain as an industrial version of the atrium, roofed with translucent plastic A prime motivation for this inside-out solution was the relative fragility of the old silo walls MVRDV regarded the structural weakness of the concrete tubes as a serious limitation because it made it difficult to cut large holes in the walls for windows, without endangering the structural integrity The 84 apartments now range from around 90 to 200 square metres and the balconies add roughly one third to that as outdoor living space photo: Jacob Gallt Public access unknown! 2005 MVRDV NCC Rasmus_Rune_Nielsen 29
