3 The Playhouse Sankt Annæ Plads Copenhagen Located on Kvæsthusbroen Landing Stage in the inner harbour of Copenhagen the Royal Theatre will get a new playhouse, at the end of Sankt Annæ Plads The Royal Theatre already has a theatre on the water, the Opera house on Kgs Nytorv, at the other side of the harbour Only the ballet will remain in the old building The two prominent positions along the water will turn them into two cultural focus points in the city The exterior of the new playhouse is dominated by a continuous glass-encased top story with offices and facilities for the actors On top is the black box each theatre has Visitors will arrive along gently sloping ramps, like a promenade, with a panoramic view of the waterfront A pedestrian and bicycle tunnel under the harbour to link the Playhouse with the Opera is being considered Lundgaard & Tranberg Arkitektfirma The Royal Theatre and Ministry of Culture NGHM Take the ferry! 5 photo: NGHM photo: NGHM Radisson Sas Royal Hotel Hammerichsgade Copenhagen This is one of the most exclusive designer hotels in the city From the exterior façade through to the swan and egg chairs gracing the lobby, all designed by famous Danish architect, Arne Jacobsen It s a landmark of the Jet Age: it was Copenhagen's first major skyscraper showing off a breakthrough Make sure to get room 606 well in advance This museum room is preserved exactly as it was when Arne completed the hotel The lobby is open for the public, and when you re there pay special attention to the staircase The beautiful high-tech design, thin steps, steel suspension ah, what a perfectionism Jacobsen said: "Well, yes, they call it the punch card, and it s funny, for that s actually what it looks like when the windows are open on a hot summer s day It s been called a lot of different things And many people thought it was a terribly ugly building, and many may still think so At least, it came in first when they held a competition for the ugliest building in Copenhagen" 1960 Arne Jacobsen Radisson Sas boeboe photo: NGHM The Radisson SAS Royal Hotel is located in the heart of the Danish capital, across from the main railway station and just 25 minutes from the Copenhagen International Airport The hotel offers underground parking and easy access to major car rental agencies 5

8 photo: Julien De Smedt photo: Julien De Smedt Harbour Bath Islands Brygge Copenhagen If you walk across Langebro on a sunny Saturday afternoon in summer, you ll see a very peculiar sight when looking down at the old industrial area on Islands Brygge Hundreds of people dressed in swimwear are walking, standing, sunbathing and smiling about as if they were on a sandy beach far from the metropolis In 2002 the Harbour Bath was opened as part of the Havneparken In no time it developed into a unique oasis right in the middle of Copenhagen People instantly loved it City harbours are usually not associated with fresh swimming water Old swimming baths at Langebro closed down in 1953 because of poor water quality Bathing is now without health risks thanks to the improved water quality With 42 km of wharf in the harbour the city s revitalisation "Blue Plan" is working on making room for houseboats, promenades, water sports, recreation areas and playgrounds in the entire harbour space Copenhageners now pack towels and swimwear in their briefcases They might fancy a swim photo: Julien De Smedt m² Main designer, Technical engineer JDS architects Birch og Krogboe Copenhagen City Council JDS 8

9 photo: Jacob Gallt photo: Jacob Gallt Frøsilos Islands Brygge Copenhagen 'Unusual yet obvious' is the best way to describe MVRDV's conversion of two grain silos on the harbour front of Copenhagen into high-end housing for the fortunate few The brief suggested filling up the circular silo spaces with apartment floors MVRDV chose to go the other way about the task and hang the apartments on the outside of the silo walls as a second skin of glass, creating very light and almost outdoor living spaces The silo interiors remain as an industrial version of the atrium, roofed with translucent plastic A prime motivation for this inside-out solution was the relative fragility of the old silo walls MVRDV regarded the structural weakness of the concrete tubes as a serious limitation because it made it difficult to cut large holes in the walls for windows, without endangering the structural integrity The 84 apartments now range from around 90 to 200 square metres and the balconies add roughly one third to that as outdoor living space photo: Jacob Gallt Public access unknown! 2005 MVRDV NCC Rasmus_Rune_Nielsen 9

10 photo: Piotr Krajewski photo: Piotr Krajewski Harbour Isle Apartments Havneholmen Copenhagen The residential project occupies a unique location on a harbour island in a former industrial area, close to both park areas and the centre of Copenhagen To make best of the exceptional location, the project is divided into smaller building volumes, relating to views, solar exposure, and harbour In addition to providing unobstructed view sight lines for each unit, the design creates a variation in apartment types and the corresponding balconies Staggered projecting bays with corner windows provide panoramas of harbour and city, while also screening views from neighbours, insuring the privacy of each apartment The project consists of 236 exclusive apartments with an average area of 101 m2/1087 ft2, consisting primarily of two and three bedroom apartments, a small portion of which are two levels The entire project, including the projecting bays, is rendered in warm white stucco, while the fenestration has teak profiles Project is not public! m² Technical engineer Lundgaard & Tranberg Arkitektfirma Niras Sjælsø Gruppen pkrajewski_pl photo: Piotr Krajewski 10

12 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Marloes Faber IT - University Rued Langgaardsvej 7 DK-2300 Copenhagen New university research and teaching building (ITU) in the northern part of Ørestad Between ITU s two main buildings there is an impressive inner courtyard, an atrium The five storeys are open to the atrium and from the balconies you can survey activities elsewhere in the building A number of group and meeting rooms have been extended out into the atrium, suspended like a long row of see-through drawers that have been pulled out to different lengths On the ground floor you will find the common facilities; lecture halls, students café, canteen and library All research and teaching areas are located on the upper floors The inner courtyard has been decorated with a digital art installation Screens have been staged on several drawers that can display digital images and animations The intention is to make the digital works of art interactive and controllable from computers and mobile phones, or they will be dependent on traffic and temperature inside and outside the building m² Interior architect, Artist Henning Larsen Marloes_Faber John Maeda Danish National Research and Educational Buildings (S-FoU) photo: Marloes Faber It's possible to walk through daily apart from weekends and (school) holidays Metro M1: Islands Brygge 12

13 VM Housing Ørestads Boulevard Copenhagen The VM Houses, shaped like a V and an M when seen from above, is the first residential project to be built in Ørestad; a new quarter of Copenhagen The characters represent PLOT s vision of how to create the most light possible and a view for the most residents possible The total project houses 41 shared-ownership flats and 180 owner-occupied apartments To leave room for life around the buildings they lifted the V House on five meter high columns, opening the courtyard to the park area on the south side, and broke down the facades with niches and angles, creating a series of informal meeting places Each apartment in the V Building has a tapering, triangular balcony with a panoramic south-facing view and rooms with up to five metres ceiling height Instead of the usual high-rise apartments the units are designed as loft spaces, each different both in width and height, letting residents design their own individual apartments Project is not public! m² Structural engineer JDS architects Moe & Brødsgaard Danish Oil Company and Høpfner Marloes_Faber Metro M1: Ørestad of Bella center 13

15 photo: Adam Mørk photo: Adam Mørk Ørestad Gymnasium Ørestads Boulevard Copenhagen This is the first school in with an architectural design that corresponds to the new visions on content, subject matter, organization, and learning systems that are part of the new Danish reforms for high schools that came into effect on August 1, 2005 Flexibility and openness are key words for the new building, which has open rooms, subject zones, niches for creativity and concentration, and free access everywhere to the virtual space Traditional spaces such as classrooms and lounges no longer exist in the high school of the future Instead, the building is divided into four study zones Each has its own story, designed like a boomerang and staggered like a shutter on a camera The stories are linked by a wide, spiral staircase that winds up toward the roof terrace The staircase is the main axis in the tall foyer the X-zone that creates physical and visual links between the different study zones and supports an interdisciplinary approach m² 3XN Municipality of Copenhagen 3XN photo: Adam Mørk Please contact before visiting: mail[at]oerestadgym[dot]dk Please be aware of the fact that Orestad College is a college, and you have to get some kind of permission to see the college from the inside during daytime Metro M1: Ørestad of Bella center The school is located across from the Fields shopping mall close to Ørestad Metro Station 15

16 8 house Richard Mortensens Vej Copenhagen The bowtie-shaped mixed-use building of 3 different types of residential housing and 10,000 m2 of retail and offices comprises s largest private development ever undertaken Commissioned by St Frederikslund and Per Hopfner in 2006, the 8 House sits on the outer edge of the city as the southern most outpost of Orestad Rather than a traditional block, the 8 House stacks all ingredients of a lively urban neighborhood into horizontal layers of typologies connected by a continuous promenade and cycling path up to the 10th floor creating a three-dimensional urban neighborhood where suburban life merges with the energy of a big city, where business and housing co-exist The 8 House creates two intimate interior courtyards, separated by the centre of the cross which houses 500 m2 of communal facilities Here the building is penetrated by a 9m wide passage that allows people to easily move from the park area on its western edge to the water filled canals to the east Project is not public! m² MI_MOA 16

17 Bella Sky Center Boulevard 5 DK-2300 Copenhagen The Bella Sky hotel in Copenhagen is (so far) the largest building site in In May 2011 Bella Sky opens as one of Scandinavia s largest and most spectacular hotels Visually the hotel is characterized by the two leaning towers, creating a spectacular and unspoiled view over the green meadows, the sea and the Copenhagen skyline The two towers incline 15 degrees by comparison the leaning tower in Pisa leans at an angle of 397 degrees amounting to a staggering 20 meter slope difference between the ground and top floor In order to accommodate such working conditions special fitters were trained to abseil down the building to mount the façade XN 3XN Subway to Bella Center 17
