2 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Sky Dome KNSM-laan LG Amsterdam The only real high building on the KNSM-island is that of Wiel Arets, and with 60m it is not even that high It was one of the last additions to the new housing district of the island and appears to be four towers in one since the block has been cut The different apartment types have simply been stacked and each stacked tower is fixed to the other with balconies The facades are not of stone, but anthracite colored concrete that was cast into rubber elements of 2 by 2 meter The same façade-system was used in apartment-tower De Hoge Heren in Rotterdam 1995 Wiel Arets s Wilma Bouw MI_MOA photo: Naomi Schiphorst Bus 42 to KNSM Eiland and tram 10 to Azartplein 2

3 photo: Paul Tierney photo: Paul Tierney Housing Reuben Street Reuben Street 8 Dublin Ireland The pace at which certain parts of the city of Dublin are being developed is aggressively challenging the spatial and physical memory of Dubliners This is certainly true in the Liberties, one of the oldest parts of the city and the location of this housing scheme by FKL Their strategy was to design two restrained, L-shaped red brick blocks and sit them down on a grey stone and mosaic tile plinth This distinct separation of elements allows this landmark to do what others often miss - to operate simultaneously in the local and wider urban context The solid, muscular masonry forms ensure this building is seen from a considerable distance, always maintaining a clear, non-reflective clean silhouette FKL have made a seminal contribution to Dublin's discussion about how to make a collection of homes that still offer individual expression 2006 FKL s Diamond Leather EmmettScanlon photo: Paul Tierney 3

5 photo: João Morgado photo: João Morgado Hoge Heren Gedempte Zalmhaven BT Rotterdam Near the Erasmus Bridge, a twin tower residential building, 102m high, it was completed in floors, it has a garage at the base I love the green lights of the garage, it offsets the anthracite colour of the buildings so nicely The architect is Wiel Arets The blocks house 210 high-quality apartments of which 51 are fully or semi-furnished serviced apartments The costs for the apartments per night are comparable to hotel accommodation However, instead of 30 m2 of impersonal space, the occupants have an average of 120 m2 of living space at their disposal Wiel Arets s ABP, Vesteda JMMM photo: Norbert van Onna The building is next to the Erasmus Bridge (north side) 5

6 photo: Rudy Uytenhaak enbureau photo: Rudy Uytenhaak enbureau La Fenetre Prins Bernhardviaduct BH Den Haag This apartment building stands on an extremely small plot between The Hague Central Station, the Dutch Royal Libray's Archive building and the Prince Bernardviaduct The building stands on high legs above an busy public route, which connects on the viaduct and central station This frees up the area below and offers space for the main entrance, health centre, storage rooms and car park The plan of the tower has the form of a trapeze: wide towards the west and narrow towards the east The tower houses 115 luxury apartments, of approximately 120 sqr meters, with a grand view over The Hague The façade is wholy cladded with glass in steps of about 10 centimetres on the exterior to ensure a striking composition that gives the building a slight crystalline impact photo: Rudy Uytenhaak enbureau Floor area/size m² Associate architect Rudy Uytenhaak Hugo Boogaard Vesteda uur Rudy-Uytenhaak The La Fenetre apartment building can be found right next to The Hague Central Station From the bus stop plateau a steel bridge connects directly to the building 6

7 photo: Federico Guardabrazo Vallejo photo: Federico Guardabrazo Vallejo Pradolongo Social Housing Calle del Doctor Tolosa Latour Madrid Spain Living Madrid is a residential development located south of Madrid and north of the M40 perimeter highway ring The 144 apartments, distributed over two six-story and one nine-story building, are linked by a submerged car park Organized around a series of horizontal 'strips' that run east to west across the site, the complex facilitates the disparate elements within the surrounding area into a coherent urban grouping, whilst at the same time extending the benefits of inner city living to the rest of the city Each 'strip' is formed as an extension of the adjacent Pradolongo Park By setting the circulation patterns and positioning of the main volumes on the site, every 'strip' divides the area in such a way as to enable pedestrian access into its depth whilst assisting in defining and enhancing the immediate area photo: Carlos Dias 2008 Wiel Arets s Fede On the corner of 'Avenida de los Poblados' and 'Calle del Doctor Tolosa Latour' 7

8 photo: Ivo Rosbeek photo: Ivo Rosbeek The Brink Centre Brink 7551 Hengelo The Brink Centre in Hengelo co-opts the inertia of 15,000 square metres of shopping to instigate major surgery on the city plan Hengelo is a small Dutch town near the German border, shaped by an industrial past and post-war reconstruction The slacked town centre tried to focus on the market place, but by the 1990s this space had been given over mostly to be used as a car park One starting point was a huge underground car park required beneath most of the site, which provides for customers to the new shops and replaces lost parking in the reclaimed market place To give some sense of vertical focus to the double square and make The Brink visible from afar, Bolles + Wilson have added a 44 metres high tower Made up of white pre-cast concrete panels, it has a LED clock at the top and a video pavilion projecting electronic billboards at the bottom These can be used as an information and display point The project provides a landmark for this central area of town Project is public! 1998, Urban planner BOLLES+WILSON ING Vastgoed studioivo photo: Ivo Rosbeek Located next to Hengelo train station 8
