2 photo: HJ Imhoff photo: HJ Imhoff Copenhagen Metro Stations Nørreport Jagtvej DK-2200 Copenhagen There are 22 stations on the existing Metro network Nine of these are underground; of these, six are deep level while three are just below the ground They all have a timeless and similar design by KHR architekter, and can be recognized by a five-metre-tall information column in front of the stations All the stations are 60 metres long and 20 metres wide, with the exception of Nørreport station which is 80 metres long to allow a link to the previously-existing S-train platforms On street level, the underground stations can be recognized by glass pyramids They are used to cast light down into the station areas In this way there will always be daylight underground There are prisms in the pyramids which intensify the light Project is public! , Urban planner Client KHR architekter Metroselskabet HJI photo: HJ Imhoff The Metro runs daily between 5 am and 12 pm Thursday, Friday and during the weekend, the Metro also runs all night We've put the placemark on the map at Nørreport, from where you walk out of the tunnel station into a large shopping area Five minutes walk and you will find yourself in green breathing areas or at one of Copenhagen s plenty museums See for more stations and maps Lines M1 and M2 pass this station 2

3 photo: DAC photo: DAC Danish ure Centre Strandgade 27B 1401 Copenhagen Danish ure Centre was established in 1985 and since then it has been housed in this old renovated warehouse in Christianshavn Danish ure Centre disseminates knowledge and visions about the architecture and building of the future Through exhibitions, professional projects, seminars and conferences and various cultural events, we are not only an eye-opener to what architecture is, but we also participate in pushing the limits for what architecture can do On a daily basis, approximately 40 employees work in DAC within four different teams: national and international projects, exhibitions, Copenhagen, and communications Additionally, DAC has its own bookshop, café and conference centre photo: DAC Project is public! 4 photo: Maarten Helle photo: Maarten Helle Grundtvig's Church På Bjerget 14b 2400 Copenhagen Known as the largest public Evangelical Lutheran church in Scandinavia, Grundtvig's Church (Grundtvigskirken in Danish) was built as a national monument for NFS Grundtvig ( ), a Danish philosopher and social reformer Building commenced in 1921, but main architect Peder Vilhelm Jensen-Klint died in 1930 He was succeeded by his son Kaare Klint and later his grandson Esben Klint, who completed the church in 1940 Its design is a combination between a cathedral and the style of old Danish country houses The yellow brickwork church stands 50 metres high, which makes it a landmark that can be seen from afar Project is public! 1940 Peder Vilhelm Jensen-Klint HelleBeelden photo: Maarten Helle The church is open to visitors all year round, not just during services It takes 20 minutes by bus no 6A-66 or 69 from Town Hall Square to Grundtvig's Church at Bispebjerg 4

5 photo: Maarten Helle photo: Maarten Helle Petrol Station Kystvejen Copenhagen Located on the main road following the coast between Copenhagen and Bellevue, this petrol station dates from 1937 and was designed by Arne Jacobsen The petrol station itself is a concrete box, clad with Meissen ceramic tiles The service area is what makes this structure stand out: it is covered by an oval concrete shell, supported by a single column This design was originally intended as a prototype for Texaco To save the structure from falling apart, it has been subject to extensive restoration, most notably in 2003 by Dissing + Weitling s in cooperation with the Gentofte Municipality The original ceramic tiles and the concrete canopy have been replaced, after meticulous research and cooperation between the heritage and municipal authorities photo: Maarten Helle Project is public! 1937 Arne Jacobsen HelleBeelden 5

6 photo: Leo Cornall photo: Leo Cornall Danish National Bank Havnegade Copenhagen The entrance for this bank is a small hole in the huge, monolithic stone wall You enter through a single-storey internal lobby that changes your direction while you enter the huge volume of the main 20m-high hall Ahead of you is a staircase that hangs from metal bars, which is a counterpoint to the entrance lobby which also hangs Light enters the austere space from recesses in the main wall The focus is centered on the arrangement of Jacobsen's Egg Chairs Through to the main banking area and the atmosphere changes completely Here, one will find light, modern wood panelling and light wells with plants next to the workers' desks photo: Leo Cornall Public access unknown! 9 photo: Maarten Helle photo: Maarten Helle Wake Up Hotel Carsten Nieburhs Gade Copenhagen Hotel A, recently named 'Wake Up Hotel', is the first erected building as part of a congress- and conference centre The centre can seat up to 4000 delegates with 3 associated hotels The hotels consist of approximately 1,300 rooms with related facilities The total area covers square metres The organisation and the architectural layout of the three hotels provide optimum conditions for an interaction between the buildings, the green pedestrian street, and the wider surroundings Structured by a distinctively layered and varied façade and by constantly shifting roof-formations, the architecture of the hotels is inspired by the natural conditions of the site - the cliff-formations eroded by the sea photo: Maarten Helle Project is public! 19 Vodroffsvej Vodroffsvej 2A 1900 Copenhagen When the building at Vodroffsvej was completed in 1929, it created a stir in the public debate The horizontal band of windows, the flat roof and the layered façade in yellow and red brick were not the typical features of Danish buildings at the time Instead, the style was inspired by The Bauhaus School and the European modernism that thrived in the Netherlands and Germany The modernist style of the 1930s is known as functionalism in Scandinavia and is characterized by clearly marked horizontal lines and corner windows made possible by the constructional progress The block consists of two wings gathering in a point at the one end The one wing facing the lake has six floors, the other wing holds five Due to the uneven terrain the levels of the block shift, so that the windows in the one wing intersect with the brick façade of the other wing The building houses 18 apartments and originally seven shops Project is not public! 1930 Main designer, Kay Fisker C F Møller s 19

20 Dronningegarden Dronningens Taergade Copenhagen Dronningegarden is a Modernist residential complex in central Copenhagen, consisting of four L-shaped buildings defining an urban space around the intersection of Adelgade and Dronningens Tvaergade Designed by Kay Fisker in collaboration with C F Moller and Svenn Eske Kristensen, it was built between 1943 and 1958, during the transition from Traditionalism to Modernism, as a notable example of Nordic Functionalism Public access unknown! 1942 Main designer, Kay Fisker C F Møller s 20

21 Hotel Astoria Banegaardspladsen Copenhagen The building was designed as a station hotel for the Danish State Railways The hotel was built from 1934 to 1935 as the first luxury hotel in Copenhagen The hotel consists of a long slender wing forming a barrier between the courtyard in front of the main entrance to the Central Station, which partly opens to the underground rail lines, and Reventlowsgade, the street on the Vesterbro side of the station An example of 'architecture parlante', the building is intended to resemble a steam locomotive, with its connotations of travel and movement encapsulating the essence of the site, and as an expression of the fascination with progress and technology which was typical of the time It consists of an expressive constellation of cubist volumes, culminating in the narrow facade looking out over Vesterbrogade which is topped by a "hood ornament" in the shape of a winged wheel bearing a crown, a sculptural representation of the old logo of the Danish State Railways Project is public! 1935 Ole Falkentorp 21
