6 photo: Leo Cornall photo: Leo Cornall Danish National Bank Havnegade Copenhagen The entrance for this bank is a small hole in the huge, monolithic stone wall You enter through a single-storey internal lobby that changes your direction while you enter the huge volume of the main 20m-high hall Ahead of you is a staircase that hangs from metal bars, which is a counterpoint to the entrance lobby which also hangs Light enters the austere space from recesses in the main wall The focus is centered on the arrangement of Jacobsen's Egg Chairs Through to the main banking area and the atmosphere changes completely Here, one will find light, modern wood panelling and light wells with plants next to the workers' desks photo: Leo Cornall Public access unknown! m² Arne Jacobsen Danish National Bank archipiano 6

7 photo: HJ Imhoff photo: HJ Imhoff Copenhagen Metro Stations Nørreport Jagtvej DK-2200 Copenhagen There are 22 stations on the existing Metro network Nine of these are underground; of these, six are deep level while three are just below the ground They all have a timeless and similar design by KHR architekter, and can be recognized by a five-metre-tall information column in front of the stations All the stations are 60 metres long and 20 metres wide, with the exception of Nørreport station which is 80 metres long to allow a link to the previously-existing S-train platforms On street level, the underground stations can be recognized by glass pyramids They are used to cast light down into the station areas In this way there will always be daylight underground There are prisms in the pyramids which intensify the light , Urban planner KHR architekter Metroselskabet HJI photo: HJ Imhoff The Metro runs daily between 5 am and 12 pm Thursday, Friday and during the weekend, the Metro also runs all night We've put the placemark on the map at Nørreport, from where you walk out of the tunnel station into a large shopping area Five minutes walk and you will find yourself in green breathing areas or at one of Copenhagen s plenty museums See for more stations and maps Lines M1 and M2 pass this station 7

10 photo: Adam Mørk photo: Adam Mørk Ørestad Gymnasium Ørestads Boulevard Copenhagen This is the first school in with an architectural design that corresponds to the new visions on content, subject matter, organization, and learning systems that are part of the new Danish reforms for high schools that came into effect on August 1, 2005 Flexibility and openness are key words for the new building, which has open rooms, subject zones, niches for creativity and concentration, and free access everywhere to the virtual space Traditional spaces such as classrooms and lounges no longer exist in the high school of the future Instead, the building is divided into four study zones Each has its own story, designed like a boomerang and staggered like a shutter on a camera The stories are linked by a wide, spiral staircase that winds up toward the roof terrace The staircase is the main axis in the tall foyer the X-zone that creates physical and visual links between the different study zones and supports an interdisciplinary approach m² 3XN Municipality of Copenhagen 3XN photo: Adam Mørk Please contact before visiting: mail[at]oerestadgym[dot]dk Please be aware of the fact that Orestad College is a college, and you have to get some kind of permission to see the college from the inside during daytime Metro M1: Ørestad of Bella center The school is located across from the Fields shopping mall close to Ørestad Metro Station 10

11 photo: Maarten Scheurwater photo: Maarten Scheurwater Øresund bridge European route E20 Malmö Sweden From both sides of Øresund, the Øresund Bridge is a striking spectacle The 204m high pylons with their harp-shaped stay cables are visible from Falsterbo in the south to Glumslöv in the north on the Swedish side and from Stevns in the south to Rungsted in the north on the Danish side The fixed link across Øresund comprises a 4 km immersed tunnel, the artificial island, Peberholm, which is 4 km long, and an 8 km cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 490 m The high bridge s two pylons are 204 m high The navigational clearance is 57 m The bridge is on two levels the railway runs along the lower deck while the motorway along the upper deck 2005 and 2006 have seen a rapid increase in the volume of traffic on the bridge This phenomenon may be due to Danes buying homes in Sweden and commuting to their work in, because the price of housing in Malmö is lower than in Copenhagen photo: Pierre Mens Technical engineer Georg Rotne ARUP Danish and Swedish governments Maarten_Scheurwater 11

24 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd 8 house Richard Mortensens Vej Copenhagen The bowtie-shaped mixed-use building of 3 different types of residential housing and 10,000 m2 of retail and offices comprises s largest private development ever undertaken Commissioned by St Frederikslund and Per Hopfner in 2006, the 8 House sits on the outer edge of the city as the southern most outpost of Orestad Rather than a traditional block, the 8 House stacks all ingredients of a lively urban neighborhood into horizontal layers of typologies connected by a continuous promenade and cycling path up to the 10th floor creating a three-dimensional urban neighborhood where suburban life merges with the energy of a big city, where business and housing co-exist The 8 House creates two intimate interior courtyards, separated by the centre of the cross which houses 500 m2 of communal facilities Here the building is penetrated by a 9m wide passage that allows people to easily move from the park area on its western edge to the water filled canals to the east Project is not public! m² BIG Bjarke Ingels Group MI_MOA photo: Dirk Verwoerd 24

25 photo: Adam Mørk photo: Adam Mørk Tivoli Concert Hall Vesterbrogade Copenhagen 3XN won the prestigious competition for the renovation of Tivoli's concert hall In a partnering process with contractor NCC and engineers Birch & Kropgboe, 3XN has restored the former glory of the concert hall and has created new buildings in the old garden Focal point of the project is a new circular three-storey foyer with lounge, bar and outdoor café which gives a view of Tivoli The foyer is light, transparent and modern, yet it keeps the 'Tivoli-spirit' White lacquered, twisted alu strings create a joyful façade that catches and reflects the sun and Tivoli's many lamps at night The 700 m2 pavilion is the new main entrance to the concert hall as well photo: Adam Mørk XN Tivoli 3XN 25

26 photo: Niels Erik Lund photo: Niels Erik Lund Koncerthuset Emil Holms Kanal Copenhagen The concert centre Koncerthuset designed by renowned French architect Jean Nouvel, has a blue frontage, monumental, yet airy, as if the building had been carved out of the sky The frontage is a semi-transparent screen and the images projected onto the vast surfaces create constantly varying impressions which make the whole structure look as if it is in motion, organic and alluring The aural quality of the house has been ensured by Japanese acoustics experts Nagata Acoustics who were also behind La Philharmonie de Paris Nouvel has also designed all interior elements of Koncerthuset The shells on the outside of the Concert Hall (Studio 1) are clad with fibre-concrete, on the inside with rockwool and porous plaster The concert hall foyer is one large room distributed over 7 levels from c 25m underground to c 30m above ground level The largest space that welcomes the public has a depth of 96m Here 25 video projectors and 50 slide projectors show slides around the foyer photo: Niels Erik Lund m² Jean Nouvel DR Forside MI_MOA By Metro, the stop is called "DR Byen" which is 3 minutes walk from Koncerthuset 26

29 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd VM Housing Ørestads Boulevard Copenhagen The VM Houses, shaped like a V and an M when seen from above, is the first residential project to be built in Ørestad; a new quarter of Copenhagen The characters represent PLOT s vision of how to create the most light possible and a view for the most residents possible The total project houses 41 shared-ownership flats and 180 owner-occupied apartments To leave room for life around the buildings they lifted the V House on five meter high columns, opening the courtyard to the park area on the south side, and broke down the facades with niches and angles, creating a series of informal meeting places Each apartment in the V Building has a tapering, triangular balcony with a panoramic south-facing view and rooms with up to five metres ceiling height Instead of the usual high-rise apartments the units are designed as loft spaces, each different both in width and height, letting residents design their own individual apartments photo: Dirk Verwoerd Project is not public! m² Structural engineer BIG Bjarke Ingels Group JDS architects Moe & Brødsgaard Danish Oil Company and Høpfner Marloes_Faber Metro M1: Ørestad of Bella center 29

30 photo: Julien De Smedt photo: Julien De Smedt Harbour Bath Islands Brygge Copenhagen If you walk across Langebro on a sunny Saturday afternoon in summer, you ll see a very peculiar sight when looking down at the old industrial area on Islands Brygge Hundreds of people dressed in swimwear are walking, standing, sunbathing and smiling about as if they were on a sandy beach far from the metropolis In 2002 the Harbour Bath was opened as part of the Havneparken In no time it developed into a unique oasis right in the middle of Copenhagen People instantly loved it City harbours are usually not associated with fresh swimming water Old swimming baths at Langebro closed down in 1953 because of poor water quality Bathing is now without health risks thanks to the improved water quality With 42 km of wharf in the harbour the city s revitalisation "Blue Plan" is working on making room for houseboats, promenades, water sports, recreation areas and playgrounds in the entire harbour space Copenhageners now pack towels and swimwear in their briefcases They might fancy a swim photo: Julien De Smedt m² Main designer, Technical engineer BIG Bjarke Ingels Group JDS architects Birch og Krogboe Copenhagen City Council JDS 30
