3 photo: Julien De Smedt photo: Julien De Smedt Harbour Bath Islands Brygge Copenhagen If you walk across Langebro on a sunny Saturday afternoon in summer, you ll see a very peculiar sight when looking down at the old industrial area on Islands Brygge Hundreds of people dressed in swimwear are walking, standing, sunbathing and smiling about as if they were on a sandy beach far from the metropolis In 2002 the Harbour Bath was opened as part of the Havneparken In no time it developed into a unique oasis right in the middle of Copenhagen People instantly loved it City harbours are usually not associated with fresh swimming water Old swimming baths at Langebro closed down in 1953 because of poor water quality Bathing is now without health risks thanks to the improved water quality With 42 km of wharf in the harbour the city s revitalisation "Blue Plan" is working on making room for houseboats, promenades, water sports, recreation areas and playgrounds in the entire harbour space Copenhageners now pack towels and swimwear in their briefcases They might fancy a swim photo: Julien De Smedt m² Main designer, Technical engineer BIG Bjarke Ingels Group JDS architects Birch og Krogboe Copenhagen City Council JDS 3

5 photo: schmidt hammer lassen architects photo: schmidt hammer lassen architects The Royal Library Søren Kierkegaards Plads 1 DK-1219 Copenhagen The Royal Library is with its clean-cut lines and glittering polished surfaces one of the most significant architectural landmarks on the Copenhagen waterfront Clad in black granite, the extension to the Royal Library is known as The Black Diamond Situated in the historic heart of Copenhagen, the extension marks a radical shift from traditional library structure and accommodates a range of cultural facilities Open and essentially democratic, the building includes scientific and literary institutions, exhibition rooms, a bookshop, a café and a restaurant, as well as a roof terrace and a hall for concerts, theatrical performances and conferences The new library has seven storeys plus a basement The solid black cube is divided in two by a vast glazed atrium housing the majority of public functions This central space, affording panoramic views over the waterfront, also serves as a significant source of daylight which is dispersed throughout the building photo: schmidt hammer lassen architects m² Acoustics consultant Structural engineer schmidt hammer lassen architects Anders Chr gade Moe & Brødsgaard The Danish Ministry of Culture Mieke Reading Room East and Reading Room North: Monday to Friday: 9 am to 9 pm, Saturday: 10 am to 5 pm, Sunday closed 5

8 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd VM Housing Ørestads Boulevard Copenhagen The VM Houses, shaped like a V and an M when seen from above, is the first residential project to be built in Ørestad; a new quarter of Copenhagen The characters represent PLOT s vision of how to create the most light possible and a view for the most residents possible The total project houses 41 shared-ownership flats and 180 owner-occupied apartments To leave room for life around the buildings they lifted the V House on five meter high columns, opening the courtyard to the park area on the south side, and broke down the facades with niches and angles, creating a series of informal meeting places Each apartment in the V Building has a tapering, triangular balcony with a panoramic south-facing view and rooms with up to five metres ceiling height Instead of the usual high-rise apartments the units are designed as loft spaces, each different both in width and height, letting residents design their own individual apartments photo: Dirk Verwoerd Project is not public! m² Structural engineer BIG Bjarke Ingels Group JDS architects Moe & Brødsgaard Danish Oil Company and Høpfner Marloes_Faber Metro M1: Ørestad of Bella center 8

9 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Marloes Faber IT - University Rued Langgaardsvej 7 DK-2300 Copenhagen New university research and teaching building (ITU) in the northern part of Ørestad Between ITU s two main buildings there is an impressive inner courtyard, an atrium The five storeys are open to the atrium and from the balconies you can survey activities elsewhere in the building A number of group and meeting rooms have been extended out into the atrium, suspended like a long row of see-through drawers that have been pulled out to different lengths On the ground floor you will find the common facilities; lecture halls, students café, canteen and library All research and teaching areas are located on the upper floors The inner courtyard has been decorated with a digital art installation Screens have been staged on several drawers that can display digital images and animations The intention is to make the digital works of art interactive and controllable from computers and mobile phones, or they will be dependent on traffic and temperature inside and outside the building m² Interior architect, Artist Henning Larsen Marloes_Faber John Maeda Danish National Research and Educational Buildings (S-FoU) photo: Marloes Faber It's possible to walk through daily apart from weekends and (school) holidays Metro M1: Islands Brygge 9

10 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd The Playhouse Sankt Annæ Plads Copenhagen Located on Kvæsthusbroen Landing Stage in the inner harbour of Copenhagen the Royal Theatre will get a new playhouse, at the end of Sankt Annæ Plads The Royal Theatre already has a theatre on the water, the Opera house on Kgs Nytorv, at the other side of the harbour Only the ballet will remain in the old building The two prominent positions along the water will turn them into two cultural focus points in the city The exterior of the new playhouse is dominated by a continuous glass-encased top story with offices and facilities for the actors On top is the black box each theatre has Visitors will arrive along gently sloping ramps, like a promenade, with a panoramic view of the waterfront A pedestrian and bicycle tunnel under the harbour to link the Playhouse with the Opera is being considered photo: Dirk Verwoerd Lundgaard & Tranberg Arkitektfirma The Royal Theatre and Ministry of Culture NGHM Take the ferry! 11 photo: Jacob Gallt photo: Jacob Gallt Frøsilos Islands Brygge Copenhagen 'Unusual yet obvious' is the best way to describe MVRDV's conversion of two grain silos on the harbour front of Copenhagen into high-end housing for the fortunate few The brief suggested filling up the circular silo spaces with apartment floors MVRDV chose to go the other way about the task and hang the apartments on the outside of the silo walls as a second skin of glass, creating very light and almost outdoor living spaces The silo interiors remain as an industrial version of the atrium, roofed with translucent plastic A prime motivation for this inside-out solution was the relative fragility of the old silo walls MVRDV regarded the structural weakness of the concrete tubes as a serious limitation because it made it difficult to cut large holes in the walls for windows, without endangering the structural integrity The 84 apartments now range from around 90 to 200 square metres and the balconies add roughly one third to that as outdoor living space photo: Jacob Gallt Public access unknown! 2005 MVRDV NCC Rasmus_Rune_Nielsen 11

13 photo: Adam Mørk photo: Adam Mørk FIH domicile Langelinie Allé 43 DK-2100 Copenhagen The new FIH (Finance for Danish Industry) has a unique and central location at Langelinie, with downtown Copenhagen within walking distance and Oresund practically on its doorstep The façade give the building an ever changing appearance It is composed of reddish brick tiles alternating with equally tall window openings - equal in numbers A matching number of alu shutters move in front of the windows and blinds open or close, depending on the amount of sunlight - or the decision of the individual behind the window The building may be conceived as a transparent crystal with large, open cuts that are used as sources of natural light and green garden spaces All offices are oriented towards the view and the daylight The office floors consist of a varied mixture of large open-plan offices and single-occupancy units forming clusters around tall, open staircases that are lit by cascades of light from above photo: Adam Mørk Project is not public! 2002 Main designer, Landscape architect Contractor 3XN Jeppe Aagaard Andersen NCC Danmark FIH 3XN 13

16 photo: Kontraframedk photo: Copenhagen X The Brygge Overpass Bryggebroen 1561/2300 Copenhagen In the summer of 2006 Copenhagen had its first new bridge across the harbour for 50 years The bridge is reserved for cyclists and pedestrians only, giving them a much needed short cut between Vesterbro and Islands Brygge The bridge is five and a half metres wide and characterized by architectural simplicity A steel structure is stretched in a gentle arc between the two harbour piers, possibly reminiscent of a spinal column, and the bridge is able to open for passing ships by having one of the spans swing to one side At night-time the light fittings in the bridge railings form a luminous ribbon right across the harbour photo: DISSING WEITLING Dissing+Weitling City of Copenhagen Copenhagen_X Always open Access from Islands Brygge (right behind Gemini Residence) and Havneholmen (behind Fisketorvet shopping centre) 16

17 photo: schmidt hammer lassen architects photo: schmidt hammer lassen architects Nykredit Headquarters Kalvebod Brygge Copenhagen Nykredit's head office is one of the largest corporate buildings in Copenhagen and occupies an unparalleled location on the city's central waterfront Across nine of its ten storeys, the complex is divided into two svelte office wings, separated by a spacious atrium The structure is one large cubic volume of glass, steel and granite and stands as a gateway between water and city The entrance level extends across the entire complex and incorporates the reception, art installations, lecture hall and a broad main staircase that leads up to the atrium, the building's heart With its suspended meeting boxes and glazed lifts as well as transverse walkways and balcony floors, the space offers an aesthetically stimulating and inspirational working environment The building's generically urban design relates to the promenade and neighbouring buildings and mediates the transition between city and harbour photo: schmidt hammer lassen architects Project is not public! m² schmidt hammer lassen architects Nykredit schmidt_hammer_lassen_architects 17

18 photo: Waterliving photo: Waterliving CPH LIVING Langebrogade Kaj Copenhagen In the innermost part of the Port of Copenhagen, close to Kalvebod Bastion and the Langebro Bridge, is Copenhagen's first floating hotel A former transport barge has been transformed into an exclusive hotel with twelve rooms, all of which benefit from the soft background music of lapping waves and fantastic views of the harbour and the city CPH LIVING is the name of the hotel, which is also extremely sustainable in terms of energy consumption, as it uses energy from the water in the harbour to heat the hotel facilities It is a fully automatic hotel, which in practice means that guests book and pay for rooms online and then receive a PIN code to use for checking in and out of the hotel In other words, apart from cleaning staff, there is no one to disturb the guests Breakfast is provided by the LIVA restaurant ship that is very conveniently berthed next to CPH LIVING The barge hotel is the first of its kind in Copenhagen photo: Waterliving m² Waterliving CPH Living I/S Copenhagen_X Buses 12 and 5A both stop at Klakvigsgade, which is 2 minutes by foot from CPH Living 18

19 photo: Adam Mørk photo: Adam Mørk Tivoli Concert Hall Vesterbrogade Copenhagen 3XN won the prestigious competition for the renovation of Tivoli's concert hall In a partnering process with contractor NCC and engineers Birch & Kropgboe, 3XN has restored the former glory of the concert hall and has created new buildings in the old garden Focal point of the project is a new circular three-storey foyer with lounge, bar and outdoor café which gives a view of Tivoli The foyer is light, transparent and modern, yet it keeps the 'Tivoli-spirit' White lacquered, twisted alu strings create a joyful façade that catches and reflects the sun and Tivoli's many lamps at night The 700 m2 pavilion is the new main entrance to the concert hall as well photo: Adam Mørk XN Tivoli 3XN 19

20 photo: Adam Mørk photo: Adam Mørk Deloitte Headquarters Copenhagen Weidekampsgade Copenhagen The Deloitte Headquarters is situated opposite the recreational area of the Stadsgraven waters and presents itself as a solitary volume on the edge between land and water Characteristic hanging gardens are cut into the building volume, creating oases for small breaks and opening up to the daylight These openings prolong the outer perimeter and enable all office areas to be placed along the façades with panoramic views The office areas and the central atrium compose one large room The result is a transparent organisation with a high degree of informal knowledge sharing The atrium frames a large piece of art; '77' made of light by Steven Scott The stairs and bridges crossing the atrium display at their bottom sides fields of lights with varying widths, changing colours in a cycle that avoids repetition for several years photo: Adam Mørk Project is not public! m² 3XN Deloitte 3XN 20

21 photo: Niels Erik Lund photo: Niels Erik Lund Koncerthuset Emil Holms Kanal Copenhagen The concert centre Koncerthuset designed by renowned French architect Jean Nouvel, has a blue frontage, monumental, yet airy, as if the building had been carved out of the sky The frontage is a semi-transparent screen and the images projected onto the vast surfaces create constantly varying impressions which make the whole structure look as if it is in motion, organic and alluring The aural quality of the house has been ensured by Japanese acoustics experts Nagata Acoustics who were also behind La Philharmonie de Paris Nouvel has also designed all interior elements of Koncerthuset The shells on the outside of the Concert Hall (Studio 1) are clad with fibre-concrete, on the inside with rockwool and porous plaster The concert hall foyer is one large room distributed over 7 levels from c 25m underground to c 30m above ground level The largest space that welcomes the public has a depth of 96m Here 25 video projectors and 50 slide projectors show slides around the foyer photo: Niels Erik Lund m² Jean Nouvel DR Forside MI_MOA By Metro, the stop is called "DR Byen" which is 3 minutes walk from Koncerthuset 21
