6 photo: Adrian Ewig Hotel Astoria Banegaardspladsen Copenhagen The building was designed as a station hotel for the Danish State Railways The hotel was built from 1934 to 1935 as the first luxury hotel in Copenhagen The hotel consists of a long slender wing forming a barrier between the courtyard in front of the main entrance to the Central Station, which partly opens to the underground rail lines, and Reventlowsgade, the street on the Vesterbro side of the station An example of 'architecture parlante', the building is intended to resemble a steam locomotive, with its connotations of travel and movement encapsulating the essence of the site, and as an expression of the fascination with progress and technology which was typical of the time It consists of an expressive constellation of cubist volumes, culminating in the narrow facade looking out over Vesterbrogade which is topped by a "hood ornament" in the shape of a winged wheel bearing a crown, a sculptural representation of the old logo of the Danish State Railways 1935 Ole Falkentorp AdrianEwig photo: Adrian Ewig 6

7 photo: Frankss photo: Frankss Kulturhus Nordvest Rentemestervej Copenhagen The northwest area in Copenhagen is located between the lively and diverse urban neighborhood of Nørrebro and the villa neighborhoods at the edge of the city Many people live and work in this multiethnic area Yet, since the area is located in the vicinity to numerous entry roads, most Copenhageners only use Nordvest as passage when going in and out of the city by car The Culture House and Library tries to help improve the identity of the area It is designed to create a landmark and to provide a meeting point for the local community The new culture house consists of 4 functions, stacked on top of each other like a series of golden books Each "book" is a world of its own with individual interiors and furnishment The spaces between are open zones for flexible use The foyer and zone between the existing building and the extension act as an urban passage for the neighborhood The concert hall is placed on top of the building A powerful object that seems to defy gravity photo: Frankss m² Main designer, Landscape architect Contractor Building physics consultant Transform COBE Schønherr Landskabsarkitekter Brdr Andersen, Randers A/S Wessberg Københavns Kommune Franks Weekdays: from 8AM till 10 PM Weekend: from 8AM till 3 PM From København H, take bus 5A and get out at Hulgårds Plads This bus ride will take about half an hour From there walk to the west and turn right on the Tomsgårdsvej Walk 250m and you will find the center on your left hand 7

19 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Maarten Helle The Bow Robert Jacobsens Vej Copenhagen Stævnen (The Bow) is one of the first buildings completed in the new Ørestad South neighbourhood The neighbourhood is planned as an exciting, dense and modern urban area composed of buildings of high architectural quality with a varied mix of residential, commercial, retail and institutional uses Stævnen is placed in the southern-most and most attractive part of the neighborhood and will have unimpeded views out over the large, protected natural area at Kalvebod Fælled As an important amenity, the new building will be surrounded by water to the east and south in the form of a large basin which is the new neighbourhood's border to Kalvebod Fælled A new art plaza showcasing Hein Heinsens's large sculpture (which is already installed) lies to the east of the site, and the future canal street will border the site to the west photo: Dirk Verwoerd Project is not public! 2009 Vilhelm Lauritzen s HelleBeelden 19

20 photo: Julian Weyer photo: Julian Weyer The Anchor Amerika Plads Copenhagen The sculptural block which unites residential and office buildings in a single overall architectural attitude makes a significant contribution towards creating a dynamic, urban power field in the dense, block-dominated quarter of Søndre Frihavn The residences and offices, which are functionally separated, enjoy the appearance of a single unit thanks to the dynamic, facetted relief pattern of the facade, which encompasses both the balconies of the homes and the larger glazed façade bays of the offices section The entire building is clad with light greenish/gray sand-faced bricks, to create a coherent volume in the new dense urban surroundings The building is bisected by two passages which serve as access to the apartments and to the courtyard with outdoor areas for both the housing and business spaces These passages cut right through the buildings with the exception of the uppermost, unifying penthouse floor, where there are meeting-rooms and generous relaxation areas photo: Julian Weyer Project is not public! m², Landscape architect Contractor Structural engineer C F Møller s C_F_Moller_s Hoffman Construction Company Orbicon City Development Copenhagen 20

23 photo: Adam Mørk photo: Adam Mørk Horten Headquarters Philip Heymanns Alle 7-9 DK-2900 Copenhagen Danish law firm Horten wanted their new headquarters to present itself in a contemporary as well as classical and solid way The architects' solution was to design a modern office with a new interpretation of the classical stone-clad façade Inside, the building appears light and open with a flexible structure, encouraging informal meetings and knowledge sharing The dynamic atmosphere is intensified by the complex and innovative exterior expression A unique façade design was developed in order to set new standards within sustainable solutions The three-dimensional façade in fiberglass and travertine works as a screen against the sun while still providing a view to the water In this way, the architecture itself is actually the main contributor to the energy savings of the building Project is not public! m² 3XN Carlsberg Ejendomme A/S 3XN photo: Adam Mørk 23

35 photo: Jacob Gallt photo: Jacob Gallt Frøsilos Islands Brygge Copenhagen 'Unusual yet obvious' is the best way to describe MVRDV's conversion of two grain silos on the harbour front of Copenhagen into high-end housing for the fortunate few The brief suggested filling up the circular silo spaces with apartment floors MVRDV chose to go the other way about the task and hang the apartments on the outside of the silo walls as a second skin of glass, creating very light and almost outdoor living spaces The silo interiors remain as an industrial version of the atrium, roofed with translucent plastic A prime motivation for this inside-out solution was the relative fragility of the old silo walls MVRDV regarded the structural weakness of the concrete tubes as a serious limitation because it made it difficult to cut large holes in the walls for windows, without endangering the structural integrity The 84 apartments now range from around 90 to 200 square metres and the balconies add roughly one third to that as outdoor living space photo: Jacob Gallt Public access unknown! 2005 MVRDV NCC Rasmus_Rune_Nielsen 35

Just minutes from the centre of Copenhagen by Metro With the new Amager Strand Beach having been inaugurated, this is now a reality Amager Strand Beach consists of the beach along the coastal road, Amager Strandvej, a lagoon, an island and the two parks 10-øren and 5-øren (the Danish 10 Øre and 5 Øre coins) The island is 2 km long and the lagoon is 400 metres at its widest point Beach stations have been sited in the middle of the island; these are concrete buildings with toilets, refreshment kiosks and so on These beach stations also act as lookout and vantage points, providing a fantastic view of the large vessels plying the Øresund Sound and Øresund Bridge or the planes preparing to land in Kastrup The new island has been bisected, so that in the north you encounter a landscape of sand dunes, only to find more park-like grounds in the south photo: Amager Strand , Urban planner Hasløv & Kjærsgaard Arkitektfirma Amager Strandpark I/S, City of Copenhagen, Frederiksberg Municipality, Copenhagen County Copenhagen_X Amager Beach is situated along Amager Strandvej in Copenhagen You can easily get there by bike from the center of the city Another possibility is to take the Metro to Lergravsparken Station and then walk 15 minutes along Øresundsvej You can also go by bus number 12 from Copenhagen Airport or from the bus terminal at the City Hall 37

39 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Danish Jewish Museum Proviantpassagen 6 DK-1218 Copenhagen The Jewish concept Mitzvah, "a good deed", is of central significance to Daniel Libeskind's architecture for the museum The Hebrew word Mitzvah is literally stamped in the building: the letters in gigantic sizes form the walking area of the museum, in which the visitors move Danish Jews were saved through the effort of their compatriots and neighbors during the tragic years of the war In this way the Danish Jewish Museum differs from other European Jewish Museums, the history is manifested in the form, structure and light The museum is located in the Royal Boat House built by King Christian IV, transformed into the Royal Library, and now shared with the Jewish Museum The entrance lies in the courtyard, and is marked with conversation spaces, stones that appear to be lying around, random placed The interior has a very Libeskind-like structure, in this case a theatre like décor for all material the museum collects, which can document significant aspects of Jewish life in m² Daniel Libeskind Danish Jewish Museum NGHM photo: Naomi Schiphorst Winter: Tuesday to Friday: 1 pm - 4 pm, Saturday and Sunday: 12 noon - 5 pm, Monday closed Summer: (1 June - 31 August), Tuesday to Sunday: 10 am - 5 pm, Monday closed The museum is located in the Royal Library garden, behind the big black library When it is closed: look for the small concrete grey door in the green wall of the Royal Library Public transport: Buslines 1A, 2A, 15, 26, 29 to Højbro Plads 66 to The Royal Library, Christians Brygge Closest metro station: Kongens Nytorv, 10 minutes walk 39

48 photo: Julien De Smedt photo: Julien De Smedt Maritime Youth House Amager Strandvej 13 DL-2300 Copenhagen The site was polluted with heavy metals (and therefore stable) To save budget the architects covered the entire site with a wooden deck (1600m2), so wasn t necessary to clean the site first The building is shared by two clients, a sail club and a youth house The youth house needed outdoor space for the kids to play; the sail club needed most of the site to park their boats The design is the literal results of negotiations between the two contradictory demands Where the deck rises it allows for boat storage and, at the same time, becomes an exciting play area for the kids The common room for daily activities is located in the front house, the workshop and storage is in the back corner building In contrast to the wooden exterior decks the floor in the community space is white concrete and a standard grey concrete in the workshop and storage area This is meant to reflect the dominance of the outdoor activities; the wooden deck is the actual "room" of the Maritime Youth House photo: Julien De Smedt m² Main designer, BIG Bjarke Ingels Group JDS architects Kvarterløft Governmental City Renewal Project JDS Monday till Friday From the central station; Københavns Hovedbanegård Take bus 2A direction: Kastrup Lufthavn Change bus at Bulgariensgade to bus 77 direction: Sundbyvester Plads Get off at Sundby Sejlforening Walk 2 min to the Maritime Youth House Take metro to Lergravsparken Station - direction: Lergravsparken Station Change to bus 77 - direction: Sundbyvester Plads Get off at Sundby Sejlforening, walk 2 min to the Maritime Youth House 48
