3 photo: Julien De Smedt photo: Julien De Smedt Harbour Bath Islands Brygge Copenhagen If you walk across Langebro on a sunny Saturday afternoon in summer, you ll see a very peculiar sight when looking down at the old industrial area on Islands Brygge Hundreds of people dressed in swimwear are walking, standing, sunbathing and smiling about as if they were on a sandy beach far from the metropolis In 2002 the Harbour Bath was opened as part of the Havneparken In no time it developed into a unique oasis right in the middle of Copenhagen People instantly loved it City harbours are usually not associated with fresh swimming water Old swimming baths at Langebro closed down in 1953 because of poor water quality Bathing is now without health risks thanks to the improved water quality With 42 km of wharf in the harbour the city s revitalisation "Blue Plan" is working on making room for houseboats, promenades, water sports, recreation areas and playgrounds in the entire harbour space Copenhageners now pack towels and swimwear in their briefcases They might fancy a swim photo: Julien De Smedt Project is public! m² Main designer, Technical engineer BIG Bjarke Ingels Group JDS architects Birch og Krogboe Copenhagen City Council JDS 3

7 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd VM Housing Ørestads Boulevard Copenhagen The VM Houses, shaped like a V and an M when seen from above, is the first residential project to be built in Ørestad; a new quarter of Copenhagen The characters represent PLOT s vision of how to create the most light possible and a view for the most residents possible The total project houses 41 shared-ownership flats and 180 owner-occupied apartments To leave room for life around the buildings they lifted the V House on five meter high columns, opening the courtyard to the park area on the south side, and broke down the facades with niches and angles, creating a series of informal meeting places Each apartment in the V Building has a tapering, triangular balcony with a panoramic south-facing view and rooms with up to five metres ceiling height Instead of the usual high-rise apartments the units are designed as loft spaces, each different both in width and height, letting residents design their own individual apartments photo: Dirk Verwoerd Project is not public! m² Structural engineer BIG Bjarke Ingels Group JDS architects Moe & Brødsgaard Danish Oil Company and Høpfner Marloes_Faber Metro M1: Ørestad of Bella center 7

8 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Marloes Faber IT - University Rued Langgaardsvej 7 DK-2300 Copenhagen New university research and teaching building (ITU) in the northern part of Ørestad Between ITU s two main buildings there is an impressive inner courtyard, an atrium The five storeys are open to the atrium and from the balconies you can survey activities elsewhere in the building A number of group and meeting rooms have been extended out into the atrium, suspended like a long row of see-through drawers that have been pulled out to different lengths On the ground floor you will find the common facilities; lecture halls, students café, canteen and library All research and teaching areas are located on the upper floors The inner courtyard has been decorated with a digital art installation Screens have been staged on several drawers that can display digital images and animations The intention is to make the digital works of art interactive and controllable from computers and mobile phones, or they will be dependent on traffic and temperature inside and outside the building Project is public! m² Interior architect, Artist Henning Larsen Marloes_Faber John Maeda Danish National Research and Educational Buildings (S-FoU) photo: Marloes Faber It's possible to walk through daily apart from weekends and (school) holidays Metro M1: Islands Brygge 8

12 photo: Triarc Arkitekter photo: Triarc Arkitekter Thorsgade Student Housing Thorsgade Copenhagen The form of the project takes it's origin in the curved course of the street The building follows this geometry, and is accentuated through the horizontal lines of the façade The tall and slim windows appear to be sub-divided visually by a horizontal steel profile that supports the glass parapets in front of the balcony doors The closed areas of the façade are clad in Rockpanel, using colours that vary in rhythm, according to the division of the balcony doors and windows The ground floor contains spaces for social interaction; study spaces, a common dining-area and social facilities Further along, on the residential floors of the building, the student's quarters gather around a double-height library that provides an additional space for communal studying, bridging the living quarters with social contact areas The library provides a clear visual marking of the building's façade to the street, as well as a visual identity to the surrounding area photo: Triarc Arkitekter Project is not public! 2005, Interior architect, Landscape architect, Urban planner Triarc Arkitekter triarc private 12

13 photo: HJ Imhoff photo: HJ Imhoff Copenhagen Metro Stations Nørreport Jagtvej DK-2200 Copenhagen There are 22 stations on the existing Metro network Nine of these are underground; of these, six are deep level while three are just below the ground They all have a timeless and similar design by KHR architekter, and can be recognized by a five-metre-tall information column in front of the stations All the stations are 60 metres long and 20 metres wide, with the exception of Nørreport station which is 80 metres long to allow a link to the previously-existing S-train platforms On street level, the underground stations can be recognized by glass pyramids They are used to cast light down into the station areas In this way there will always be daylight underground There are prisms in the pyramids which intensify the light Project is public! , Urban planner KHR architekter Metroselskabet HJI photo: HJ Imhoff The Metro runs daily between 5 am and 12 pm Thursday, Friday and during the weekend, the Metro also runs all night We've put the placemark on the map at Nørreport, from where you walk out of the tunnel station into a large shopping area Five minutes walk and you will find yourself in green breathing areas or at one of Copenhagen s plenty museums See for more stations and maps Lines M1 and M2 pass this station 13

14 photo: Adam Mørk photo: Adam Mørk FIH domicile Langelinie Allé 43 DK-2100 Copenhagen The new FIH (Finance for Danish Industry) has a unique and central location at Langelinie, with downtown Copenhagen within walking distance and Oresund practically on its doorstep The façade give the building an ever changing appearance It is composed of reddish brick tiles alternating with equally tall window openings - equal in numbers A matching number of alu shutters move in front of the windows and blinds open or close, depending on the amount of sunlight - or the decision of the individual behind the window The building may be conceived as a transparent crystal with large, open cuts that are used as sources of natural light and green garden spaces All offices are oriented towards the view and the daylight The office floors consist of a varied mixture of large open-plan offices and single-occupancy units forming clusters around tall, open staircases that are lit by cascades of light from above photo: Adam Mørk Project is not public! 2002 Main designer, Landscape architect Contractor 3XN Jeppe Aagaard Andersen NCC Danmark FIH 3XN 14

18 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd 8 house Richard Mortensens Vej Copenhagen The bowtie-shaped mixed-use building of 3 different types of residential housing and 10,000 m2 of retail and offices comprises s largest private development ever undertaken Commissioned by St Frederikslund and Per Hopfner in 2006, the 8 House sits on the outer edge of the city as the southern most outpost of Orestad Rather than a traditional block, the 8 House stacks all ingredients of a lively urban neighborhood into horizontal layers of typologies connected by a continuous promenade and cycling path up to the 10th floor creating a three-dimensional urban neighborhood where suburban life merges with the energy of a big city, where business and housing co-exist The 8 House creates two intimate interior courtyards, separated by the centre of the cross which houses 500 m2 of communal facilities Here the building is penetrated by a 9m wide passage that allows people to easily move from the park area on its western edge to the water filled canals to the east Project is not public! m² BIG Bjarke Ingels Group MI_MOA photo: Dirk Verwoerd 18
