4 photo: Julien De Smedt photo: Julien De Smedt Harbour Bath Islands Brygge Copenhagen If you walk across Langebro on a sunny Saturday afternoon in summer, you ll see a very peculiar sight when looking down at the old industrial area on Islands Brygge Hundreds of people dressed in swimwear are walking, standing, sunbathing and smiling about as if they were on a sandy beach far from the metropolis In 2002 the Harbour Bath was opened as part of the Havneparken In no time it developed into a unique oasis right in the middle of Copenhagen People instantly loved it City harbours are usually not associated with fresh swimming water Old swimming baths at Langebro closed down in 1953 because of poor water quality Bathing is now without health risks thanks to the improved water quality With 42 km of wharf in the harbour the city s revitalisation "Blue Plan" is working on making room for houseboats, promenades, water sports, recreation areas and playgrounds in the entire harbour space Copenhageners now pack towels and swimwear in their briefcases They might fancy a swim photo: Julien De Smedt Project is public! m² Main designer, Technical engineer BIG Bjarke Ingels Group JDS architects Birch og Krogboe Copenhagen City Council JDS 4

5 photo: schmidt hammer lassen architects photo: schmidt hammer lassen architects The Royal Library Søren Kierkegaards Plads 1 DK-1219 Copenhagen The Royal Library is with its clean-cut lines and glittering polished surfaces one of the most significant architectural landmarks on the Copenhagen waterfront Clad in black granite, the extension to the Royal Library is known as The Black Diamond Situated in the historic heart of Copenhagen, the extension marks a radical shift from traditional library structure and accommodates a range of cultural facilities Open and essentially democratic, the building includes scientific and literary institutions, exhibition rooms, a bookshop, a café and a restaurant, as well as a roof terrace and a hall for concerts, theatrical performances and conferences The new library has seven storeys plus a basement The solid black cube is divided in two by a vast glazed atrium housing the majority of public functions This central space, affording panoramic views over the waterfront, also serves as a significant source of daylight which is dispersed throughout the building photo: schmidt hammer lassen architects Project is public! m² Acoustics consultant Structural engineer schmidt hammer lassen architects Anders Chr gade Moe & Brødsgaard The Danish Ministry of Culture Mieke Reading Room East and Reading Room North: Monday to Friday: 9 am to 9 pm, Saturday: 10 am to 5 pm, Sunday closed 5

9 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd VM Housing Ørestads Boulevard Copenhagen The VM Houses, shaped like a V and an M when seen from above, is the first residential project to be built in Ørestad; a new quarter of Copenhagen The characters represent PLOT s vision of how to create the most light possible and a view for the most residents possible The total project houses 41 shared-ownership flats and 180 owner-occupied apartments To leave room for life around the buildings they lifted the V House on five meter high columns, opening the courtyard to the park area on the south side, and broke down the facades with niches and angles, creating a series of informal meeting places Each apartment in the V Building has a tapering, triangular balcony with a panoramic south-facing view and rooms with up to five metres ceiling height Instead of the usual high-rise apartments the units are designed as loft spaces, each different both in width and height, letting residents design their own individual apartments photo: Dirk Verwoerd m² Structural engineer BIG Bjarke Ingels Group JDS architects Moe & Brødsgaard Danish Oil Company and Høpfner Marloes_Faber Metro M1: Ørestad of Bella center 9

10 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Northern Lights Amerika Plads Copenhagen Nordlyset (Northern Lights) is the first residential block completed in the new Amerika Plads neighbourhood north of the centre of Copenhagen, at the Port It is a taut, white-rendered block, where balconies and gates have been hewn out of the heavy form which they are instrumental in softening In so doing, Nordlyset is intended to contribute to the impression of a compact neighbourhood, in which the streets are narrow and the buildings solid and weighty, but different The residential block houses rented and owner-occupied apartments, and the lower floor will accommodate either shops or smallish youth dwellings Ruth Campau contributed to the glass surfaces throughout the building The artist s brushstrokes have been rendered into a striped pattern, for example, in the entranceways and around the lifts From the outside, the patterns can be clearly made out on some double-glazed plating fitted perpendicularly to the facade and acting as dividing walls between two balconies photo: Naomi Schiphorst m² Artist C F Møller s Ruth Campau JM Danmark boeboe You can visit the inside square, the inner courtyard when the gate is open Amerika Plads is conveniently located close to the S train stations Østerport and Nordhavn Or take bus 26 from the city centre 10

11 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd The Playhouse Sankt Annæ Plads Copenhagen Located on Kvæsthusbroen Landing Stage in the inner harbour of Copenhagen the Royal Theatre will get a new playhouse, at the end of Sankt Annæ Plads The Royal Theatre already has a theatre on the water, the Opera house on Kgs Nytorv, at the other side of the harbour Only the ballet will remain in the old building The two prominent positions along the water will turn them into two cultural focus points in the city The exterior of the new playhouse is dominated by a continuous glass-encased top story with offices and facilities for the actors On top is the black box each theatre has Visitors will arrive along gently sloping ramps, like a promenade, with a panoramic view of the waterfront A pedestrian and bicycle tunnel under the harbour to link the Playhouse with the Opera is being considered photo: Dirk Verwoerd Project is public! 12 photo: Torben Eskerod photo: Torben Eskerod The Bikuben Student Residence Amager Fælledvej Copenhagen Loneliness and lack of social relations are major problems for many students Bikuben student residence provides the framework for the study years and improves the possibilities of a community spirit emerging in a widespread social network The main shape is very serene and conveys in itself the hostel's founding principles of community and equality To provide the greatest possible contact between common and private rooms, while at the same time ensuring the privacy of each residence, the residences and the common rooms are connected in a double spiral surrounding an atrium Thus, the limitations of the student's living quarters are widened to incorporate the entire building and the social contact areas, and the freedom of the individual is considered to a maximum degree Concrete tectonics and social responsibility merge, and the building is embedded in its place and alters its conditions photo: Torben Eskerod m², Landscape architect Structural engineer Lighting designer aart aart Rambøll Viera Collaro Kollegiefonden Bikuben 12

14 photo: Jacob Gallt photo: Jacob Gallt Frøsilos Islands Brygge Copenhagen 'Unusual yet obvious' is the best way to describe MVRDV's conversion of two grain silos on the harbour front of Copenhagen into high-end housing for the fortunate few The brief suggested filling up the circular silo spaces with apartment floors MVRDV chose to go the other way about the task and hang the apartments on the outside of the silo walls as a second skin of glass, creating very light and almost outdoor living spaces The silo interiors remain as an industrial version of the atrium, roofed with translucent plastic A prime motivation for this inside-out solution was the relative fragility of the old silo walls MVRDV regarded the structural weakness of the concrete tubes as a serious limitation because it made it difficult to cut large holes in the walls for windows, without endangering the structural integrity The 84 apartments now range from around 90 to 200 square metres and the balconies add roughly one third to that as outdoor living space photo: Jacob Gallt Public access unknown! 2005 MVRDV NCC Rasmus_Rune_Nielsen 14

15 photo: Adam Mørk photo: Adam Mørk Ørestad Gymnasium Ørestads Boulevard Copenhagen This is the first school in with an architectural design that corresponds to the new visions on content, subject matter, organization, and learning systems that are part of the new Danish reforms for high schools that came into effect on August 1, 2005 Flexibility and openness are key words for the new building, which has open rooms, subject zones, niches for creativity and concentration, and free access everywhere to the virtual space Traditional spaces such as classrooms and lounges no longer exist in the high school of the future Instead, the building is divided into four study zones Each has its own story, designed like a boomerang and staggered like a shutter on a camera The stories are linked by a wide, spiral staircase that winds up toward the roof terrace The staircase is the main axis in the tall foyer the X-zone that creates physical and visual links between the different study zones and supports an interdisciplinary approach Project is public! m² 3XN Municipality of Copenhagen 3XN photo: Adam Mørk Please contact before visiting: mail[at]oerestadgym[dot]dk Please be aware of the fact that Orestad College is a college, and you have to get some kind of permission to see the college from the inside during daytime Metro M1: Ørestad of Bella center The school is located across from the Fields shopping mall close to Ørestad Metro Station 15

16 photo: Triarc Arkitekter photo: Triarc Arkitekter Thorsgade Student Housing Thorsgade Copenhagen The form of the project takes it's origin in the curved course of the street The building follows this geometry, and is accentuated through the horizontal lines of the façade The tall and slim windows appear to be sub-divided visually by a horizontal steel profile that supports the glass parapets in front of the balcony doors The closed areas of the façade are clad in Rockpanel, using colours that vary in rhythm, according to the division of the balcony doors and windows The ground floor contains spaces for social interaction; study spaces, a common dining-area and social facilities Further along, on the residential floors of the building, the student's quarters gather around a double-height library that provides an additional space for communal studying, bridging the living quarters with social contact areas The library provides a clear visual marking of the building's façade to the street, as well as a visual identity to the surrounding area photo: Triarc Arkitekter 2005, Interior architect, Landscape architect, Urban planner Triarc Arkitekter triarc private 16

18 photo: Piotr Krajewski photo: Piotr Krajewski Harbour Isle Apartments Havneholmen Copenhagen The residential project occupies a unique location on a harbour island in a former industrial area, close to both park areas and the centre of Copenhagen To make best of the exceptional location, the project is divided into smaller building volumes, relating to views, solar exposure, and harbour In addition to providing unobstructed view sight lines for each unit, the design creates a variation in apartment types and the corresponding balconies Staggered projecting bays with corner windows provide panoramas of harbour and city, while also screening views from neighbours, insuring the privacy of each apartment The project consists of 236 exclusive apartments with an average area of 101 m2/1087 ft2, consisting primarily of two and three bedroom apartments, a small portion of which are two levels The entire project, including the projecting bays, is rendered in warm white stucco, while the fenestration has teak profiles m² Technical engineer Lundgaard & Tranberg Arkitektfirma Niras Sjælsø Gruppen pkrajewski_pl photo: Piotr Krajewski 18

19 photo: Piotr Krajewski photo: Piotr Krajewski Fyrtrnet Pakhusvej Copenhagen The Lighthouse (Fyrtrnet) marks the entrance to the new residential area on Amerika Plads With its 48 meters and 15 stories, the residential complex is also highly visible both from the city and from the water Its design is also unusual The tallest part has a distinctive stepped shape on the south, growing narrower toward the top, where it ends in two-story penthouses In addition to the tall tower, the complex consists of a six-story building with a common roof terrace These two buildings hold 89 condos between 90 and 160 sq m Both the tower and its neighbor are covered with expanses of dark-gray slate, interrupted on the low building by large bays and balconies along Kalkbrænderihavnsgade The choice fell on gray slate since it provides a varied play of color and at the same time harmonizes with the area's old brick buildings with slate roofs photo: Piotr Krajewski 2007 Lundgaard & Tranberg Arkitektfirma Amerika Plads ApS pkrajewski_pl 19

22 photo: Maarten Helle photo: Maarten Helle Petrol Station Kystvejen Copenhagen Located on the main road following the coast between Copenhagen and Bellevue, this petrol station dates from 1937 and was designed by Arne Jacobsen The petrol station itself is a concrete box, clad with Meissen ceramic tiles The service area is what makes this structure stand out: it is covered by an oval concrete shell, supported by a single column This design was originally intended as a prototype for Texaco To save the structure from falling apart, it has been subject to extensive restoration, most notably in 2003 by Dissing + Weitling s in cooperation with the Gentofte Municipality The original ceramic tiles and the concrete canopy have been replaced, after meticulous research and cooperation between the heritage and municipal authorities photo: Maarten Helle Project is public! 1937 Arne Jacobsen HelleBeelden 22
