3 photo: Julien De Smedt photo: Julien De Smedt Harbour Bath Islands Brygge Copenhagen If you walk across Langebro on a sunny Saturday afternoon in summer, you ll see a very peculiar sight when looking down at the old industrial area on Islands Brygge Hundreds of people dressed in swimwear are walking, standing, sunbathing and smiling about as if they were on a sandy beach far from the metropolis In 2002 the Harbour Bath was opened as part of the Havneparken In no time it developed into a unique oasis right in the middle of Copenhagen People instantly loved it City harbours are usually not associated with fresh swimming water Old swimming baths at Langebro closed down in 1953 because of poor water quality Bathing is now without health risks thanks to the improved water quality With 42 km of wharf in the harbour the city s revitalisation "Blue Plan" is working on making room for houseboats, promenades, water sports, recreation areas and playgrounds in the entire harbour space Copenhageners now pack towels and swimwear in their briefcases They might fancy a swim photo: Julien De Smedt m² Main designer, Technical engineer BIG Bjarke Ingels Group JDS architects Birch og Krogboe Copenhagen City Council JDS 3

5 photo: schmidt hammer lassen architects photo: schmidt hammer lassen architects The Royal Library Søren Kierkegaards Plads 1 DK-1219 Copenhagen The Royal Library is with its clean-cut lines and glittering polished surfaces one of the most significant architectural landmarks on the Copenhagen waterfront Clad in black granite, the extension to the Royal Library is known as The Black Diamond Situated in the historic heart of Copenhagen, the extension marks a radical shift from traditional library structure and accommodates a range of cultural facilities Open and essentially democratic, the building includes scientific and literary institutions, exhibition rooms, a bookshop, a café and a restaurant, as well as a roof terrace and a hall for concerts, theatrical performances and conferences The new library has seven storeys plus a basement The solid black cube is divided in two by a vast glazed atrium housing the majority of public functions This central space, affording panoramic views over the waterfront, also serves as a significant source of daylight which is dispersed throughout the building photo: schmidt hammer lassen architects m² Acoustics consultant Structural engineer schmidt hammer lassen architects Anders Chr gade Moe & Brødsgaard The Danish Ministry of Culture Mieke Reading Room East and Reading Room North: Monday to Friday: 9 am to 9 pm, Saturday: 10 am to 5 pm, Sunday closed 5

7 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd VM Housing Ørestads Boulevard Copenhagen The VM Houses, shaped like a V and an M when seen from above, is the first residential project to be built in Ørestad; a new quarter of Copenhagen The characters represent PLOT s vision of how to create the most light possible and a view for the most residents possible The total project houses 41 shared-ownership flats and 180 owner-occupied apartments To leave room for life around the buildings they lifted the V House on five meter high columns, opening the courtyard to the park area on the south side, and broke down the facades with niches and angles, creating a series of informal meeting places Each apartment in the V Building has a tapering, triangular balcony with a panoramic south-facing view and rooms with up to five metres ceiling height Instead of the usual high-rise apartments the units are designed as loft spaces, each different both in width and height, letting residents design their own individual apartments photo: Dirk Verwoerd Project is not public! m² Structural engineer BIG Bjarke Ingels Group JDS architects Moe & Brødsgaard Danish Oil Company and Høpfner Marloes_Faber Metro M1: Ørestad of Bella center 7

8 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd The Playhouse Sankt Annæ Plads Copenhagen Located on Kvæsthusbroen Landing Stage in the inner harbour of Copenhagen the Royal Theatre will get a new playhouse, at the end of Sankt Annæ Plads The Royal Theatre already has a theatre on the water, the Opera house on Kgs Nytorv, at the other side of the harbour Only the ballet will remain in the old building The two prominent positions along the water will turn them into two cultural focus points in the city The exterior of the new playhouse is dominated by a continuous glass-encased top story with offices and facilities for the actors On top is the black box each theatre has Visitors will arrive along gently sloping ramps, like a promenade, with a panoramic view of the waterfront A pedestrian and bicycle tunnel under the harbour to link the Playhouse with the Opera is being considered photo: Dirk Verwoerd Lundgaard & Tranberg Arkitektfirma The Royal Theatre and Ministry of Culture NGHM Take the ferry! Just minutes from the centre of Copenhagen by Metro With the new Amager Strand Beach having been inaugurated, this is now a reality Amager Strand Beach consists of the beach along the coastal road, Amager Strandvej, a lagoon, an island and the two parks 10-øren and 5-øren (the Danish 10 Øre and 5 Øre coins) The island is 2 km long and the lagoon is 400 metres at its widest point Beach stations have been sited in the middle of the island; these are concrete buildings with toilets, refreshment kiosks and so on These beach stations also act as lookout and vantage points, providing a fantastic view of the large vessels plying the Øresund Sound and Øresund Bridge or the planes preparing to land in Kastrup The new island has been bisected, so that in the north you encounter a landscape of sand dunes, only to find more park-like grounds in the south photo: Amager Strand , Urban planner Hasløv & Kjærsgaard Arkitektfirma Amager Strandpark I/S, City of Copenhagen, Frederiksberg Municipality, Copenhagen County Copenhagen_X Amager Beach is situated along Amager Strandvej in Copenhagen You can easily get there by bike from the center of the city Another possibility is to take the Metro to Lergravsparken Station and then walk 15 minutes along Øresundsvej You can also go by bus number 12 from Copenhagen Airport or from the bus terminal at the City Hall 11

17 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd 8 house Richard Mortensens Vej Copenhagen The bowtie-shaped mixed-use building of 3 different types of residential housing and 10,000 m2 of retail and offices comprises s largest private development ever undertaken Commissioned by St Frederikslund and Per Hopfner in 2006, the 8 House sits on the outer edge of the city as the southern most outpost of Orestad Rather than a traditional block, the 8 House stacks all ingredients of a lively urban neighborhood into horizontal layers of typologies connected by a continuous promenade and cycling path up to the 10th floor creating a three-dimensional urban neighborhood where suburban life merges with the energy of a big city, where business and housing co-exist The 8 House creates two intimate interior courtyards, separated by the centre of the cross which houses 500 m2 of communal facilities Here the building is penetrated by a 9m wide passage that allows people to easily move from the park area on its western edge to the water filled canals to the east Project is not public! m² BIG Bjarke Ingels Group MI_MOA photo: Dirk Verwoerd 17

18 photo: Julian Weyer photo: Julian Weyer The Opera Pavilion Orlogsværftsvej Copenhagen With the Opera Pavilion, which can accommodate 200 waiting persons, opera guests and other visitors to Holmen will have a place of shelter by the water bus quay In its form, the building takes its cue from the existing semicircle of the jetty The pavilion thus has the appearance of a seamless, circular geometrical shape which is open towards the jetty and on two sides, as well as towards the gangway pier The clear, simple expression is underlined in the facade structure, which consists of two strips of copper, between which runs a glass facade offering 360-degree visibility The roof, which is slightly sloping, is also clad in copper, and features an asymmetrically-positioned round skylight, which gives the building's fifth facade a certain lightness This unusual architectural treatment was desirable, as the entire building can be seen from the Opera foyer Copper has been chosen to create an architectural link with the handsome, preserved control towers m² Services engineer Contractor C F Møller s Alectia HSM Industri AP Møller og Hustru Chastine Mc-Kinney Møllers Fond til almene Formaal C_F_Moller_s photo: Julian Weyer During water bus operating hours By water bus line 901, 902 or
