4 ies of ntionl chrcter s their contribution to the wr effort. Their reports delt minly with the United Sttes, Jpn, nd Russi, but some of the lesser ntions were included s well. Drwing on trdition of culture nd personlity studies done in primitive societies, they sprked mssive upsurge of interest in the study of ntionl differences stted in psychologicl terms. In this first of series of surveys of reserch in the socil sciences to be conducted with UNESCO support, two Dutch socil scientists, Duijker nd Frijd, ssess wht hs been nd wht needs to be done in the study of ntionl chrcter. They review the confusing rry of currently used pproches nd conclude tht the most distinctive nd sound ttck requires tht we tret ntionl chrcter literlly s the pttern of personlity chrcteristics present in given popultion. Only thus cn we void confusing it with the people's history, their politics, or their institutions. This, of course, requires the use of psychologicl "tests" or mesures which re vlid cross-culturlly, nd our guides to the literture mke it cler tht there re not mny which cn qulify. It will be no gret surprise, therefore, tht Duijker nd Frijd report tht socil'psychologists hve not yet, for even one country let lone for ny set of ntions, systemticlly described the distribution of personlity chrcteristics in the popultion nd ssessed wherein the pttern is common or distinctive. The methods for such study re now more or less in hnd, however, nd we re convinced tht with fuller resources the importnt fctul questions fcing the field cn be nswered. We cnnot be eqully confident tht we will explin wht produces differences in the psychologicl composition of popultions-ssuming such differences exist-or wht consequences they hve in socil ction. There is vluble bibliogrphy of lmost 1000 items. The bibliogrphy, nd severl chpters which focus rther intently on detiled review of the literture, mke this essentilly specilist's book. Nevertheless, the presenttion is very well orgnized, nd the style commendbly simple nd lucid. The book will be red with interest by nyone willing to open his mind to the prospect of scientific study of ntionl differences. (Minnepolis-Honeywell Regultor Co., Dept. Sci367, Hnn St., Beltsville, Md.) Preset timer is designed for use with ny trnsistorized scler. Two time bses, interchngeble by insertion of plug-in crds, re provided: 10- kcy/sec crystl-controlled oscilltor nd 60-cy/sec line. A five-digit neon redout expresses elpsed time in tenths of second for the 60-cy/ sec bse nd in one-hundred-thousndths of minute for the 10-kcy/sec bse. Digits my be preset in ny decde, one decde t time. A printout feture is optionlly vilble. (Eldordo Electronics, Dept. Sci366, St., Berkeley 10, Clif.) Sweep genertor hs center frequency rnge of 5 to 1200 Mcy/sec nd sweep width lso 5 to 1200 Mcy/sec. The genertor uses voltgetuned mgnetron operting from 2400 to 3600 Mcy/sec nd fixed-frequency cvity oscilltor t 2400 Mcy/sec. Their outputs re mixed, nd the difference signl is the genertor output. The two fundmentls nd other high-frequency components re removed by low-pss filter. An utomtic gin control circuit continuously smples the swept output to ssure uniform signl level. Fltness is sid to be within ±2 db over 100 Mcy/sec width nd within db over-ll. Output is greter thn 0.25 volt (r.m.s.). (Telonic Industries Inc., Dept. Sci379, Beech Grove, Ind.) Vrible phse stndrd genertes two signls of equl mplitude differing in phse by ny ngle from 0 to 360 deg s determined by front-pnel controls. The reference signl hs fixed mplitude of 50 volts (r.m.s). The vector output, which my be displced in phse, hs mximum mplitude of 50 volts (r.m.s.) nd my be ttenuted in steps of 50 mv. A front-pnel selector switch permits opertion of ny of three frequencies within the rnge 150 to 3000 cy/sec. Ech frequency cn be vried over 4-5-percent rnge. Angulr ccurcy is sid to be deg t ny ngle, nd resolution is sid to be 1 min. The instrument is self-contined, requiring no externl equipment for opertion or clibrtion. (Gertsch Products, Inc., Dept. Sci380, 3211 S. L Cieneg Blvd., Los Angeles 16, Clif.) Pump is designed to produce uniform flow over the rnge 30 to 500 ml/ min. It is continuously djustble over the entire rnge. Flow does not deprt from verge setting by more thn 0.3 ml. The pprtus pumps ginst bck pressure of 300 mm-hg. Flow rte is sid to vry less thn 2 percent with pressure chnge from zero to 180 mm-hg. A vrible-speed drive unit, seprtely housed, my be distnt from the pump. Hold-up volume of the pump is less thn 40 ml. (Sge Instruments Inc., Dept. Sci383, 9 Bnk St., White Plins, N.Y.) Reference voltge source simultes the d-c electricl output of trnsducers with setting ccurcy sid to be ±0.05 percent. The device consists of potentiometer of infinite resolution nd bridge network supplied with 115 volt, 60 or 400 cy/ sec current nd Zener reference. Scle of the instrument, 12 ft long, cn be grduted in severl rnges in terms of the crdinl points of the instruments to be clibrted, or it cn be grduted in single rnge with up to 000 scle divisions. The device is designed to test indicting instruments in the millivolt or microvolt rnge. (Howell Instruments, Inc., Dept Sci38 1, 3479 W. Vickery Blvd., Fort Worth 7, Tex.) Null voltmeter hs 13 zero-centered rnges from 1 mv to 1000 v end scle. Input impednce is 10 megohms in the most sensitive rnge nd 200 megohms on the 300-MV nd higher rnges. Accurcy is sid to be within +2 percent of end scle. The instrument provides n output proportionl to meter deflection nd cn be used s stble d-c mplifier. (Hewlett Pckrd Co., Dept.
