2 Artcst 50 Yers of Service Author Erich Knoespel 2 Artcst Inc. hs its roots in precision industril csting. It begn in 1964, the brinchild of Eric Knoespel, Brry Hdley nd Allen Rice, precision foundry known s Cndin Investment Csting. Lter it ws incorported to become Mid Cndin Investment Cstings Ltd. They becme Cercor In 1974 when the three prtners sold shres to Cercst of Montrel. In 1964, Mid Cndin produced its very first non-industril csting, Fiftieth Anniversry Coin for Milton Hydro Electric. Cercor ws primrily high qulity industril foundry nd on the odd occsion rtists would request cstings of their sculptures. Word spred tht this ws the plce where you could hve your rtwork cst with the relibility nd qulity of big professionl investment foundry. With the chllenges of rtwork cme the need to modify the csting process to ccommodte strnge shpes nd vrious wll thicknesses. The demnd for fine-rt cstings ws lrge enough tht Artcst ws creted s division of Cercor. In 1979, Eric brnched off on his own to expnd the Artcst division into its own Foundry. Artcst continued to shre spce with Cercor until 1981 when it moved round the corner to set up s its own entity. Artcst remins there tody t 14 Armstrong Avenue in Georgetown ON. Eric ws hppy to bring his three children Andre, Mon, nd Mrcus, into the compny during their teenge yers. After high school ech went their own direction. Andre moved wy in the 1980 s. It ws in 1988 when Mrcus nd Mon cme bck to Artcst where they ssisted in estblishing foundry in Thilnd. Artcst still hs connections with the Thilnd Foundry but the mjority of production occurs in Georgetown. Mon ws mjor prt of the customer-reltions tem nd rn the Thursdy Toronto office until her pssing in Mrcus, hving worked his wy round the deprtments of Artcst becme lrge prt of the technicl tem. He is currently president nd shreholder of Artcst. Eric hs retired but still comes in for visits to the foundry from time to time. Keeping it in the fmily, wht ws once Mon s customer-reltions position hs now been tken on by Mrcus wife Cthy. Mrcus nd Cthy s son Erich hs tken on specil project co-ordintion including the fiftieth nniversry event nd gllery show Rückblick t the CSS in Erich cn lso be seen on the production floor. Projects vry from the beutiful medllions produced by such rtists s those ssocited with MASC to monumentl pieces like the recent 1812 memoril produced by Adrienne Alison in With industril precision nd knowledge t its core, Artcst s pst fifty yers hve estblished the importnce of qulity in its production from originl to ptin. Art is nd lwys will be huge prt of Artcst Inc. s success. For the fmily nd stff it is lso felt tht restortions, reproductions, proto-types, rchitecturl elements, current technology, nd project mngement re integrl to keeping Artcst s imge live for t lest the next fifty yers. 3

3 2014 ws big yer for Artcst The shop ws full of work, the web site ws re-lunched, n open house ws hosted t the foundry, nd n rt show, clled Rückblick ws held, t the Cndin Sculpture Centre. The Artcst Qulity Crew At Artcst, the highly skilled tem of diverse individuls who ech bring their unique skill sets to the process. 4 Triumph Through Diversity Triumph Through Diversity ws unveiled on November 6th The monument, sculpted by Cndin sculptor Adrienne Alison, sits beside the Est Block on Prliment Hill. There re seven lifesize figures stnding on the stone bse fcing outwrds. The silhouette of this monument is powerful nd memorble. Sculptor: Adrienne Alison Rückblick Author Erich Knoespel 2014 ws yer for us to thnk those who hve helped us get to where we re tody nd to show others how we got there. Rückblick exhibited works from 1964 to 2014 ll in one spce. The show ws full of Cndin bronze sculpture from wide rnge of sculptors with wide rnge of styles. It s sid tht if you stnd still long enough t Artcst, you ll be cst. There re few pieces tht ren t wht you d trditionlly cll rt but certinly hd erned their plce in the show. There ws cst driftwood, pinecones, corns, trout, jens, shirts, nd even bee s nest. Some of this Sh*t We ve Cst ws on disply t the gllery. It goes to show how bronze is truly fine rt medium. I ve been sked on quite few occsions wht is Rückblick nd why did you chose tht. Typiclly shows tht show history of n rtist or in our cse foundry re known s retrospectives. I gree tht Retrospect would be good nme s it is simple nd tht s truly wht the show ws but I didn t feel tht it ws s unique s Artcst. Artcst is Cnd s premiere rt foundry nd I wnted something tht would mke people think something different thn the rest. I looked to the history of the founder, Eric Knoespel (my Op). I decided to do little reserch nd find wht Germn glleries clled their retrospect shows well it turns out tht they just use Retrospekt with k not unique enough for wht I wnted. I then just decided to trnslte retrospect nd cme cross Rückblick, it s different nd it mens wht I needed it to men. So for us Rückblick is more thn just the Germn word for retrospect or looking bck. To us it lso mens ttention to detil, stunning finishes, customer service, highly experienced stff, nd professionl rt foundry you cn count on just s others hve been for 50 yers. 6 7

7 FIDEM in Review September 2014, five of us, the Cndin FIDEM contingent of Susn nd Doug Tylor, Lorrine Wright nd Henry nd Lynden Beesley mde our wy to Sofi, Bulgri to the 33rd FIDEM Congress. Bulgri ws fscinting with its long nd tumultuous history. It hd been conquered nd settled by mny invders from the Greeks to the Soviets s we found out on our vried nd interesting tours round the countryside. The Congress plenry nd eductionl sessions were held in the Tridits Hll of the Grnd Hotel, Sofi. The Congress ws opened to the sounds of folk songs nd bgpipes by FIDEM President Phillip Atwood nd Professor Bogomil Nikolov, the Bulgrin FIDEM delegte nd chirmn of the orgnizing committee for the 33rd Congress. The Congress medl exhibition took plce in the Ntionl Archeologicl Museum. The medls were displyed in cses round the second level blcony. At the opening We were entertined by wonderful mle voice choir of Acpell singers. We ttended lectures, snd csting workshop, the medl fir s well s city tours nd tour to Plovdiv, the culturl Cpitol for There were mny openings of student medl exhibitions nd n exhibition of Professor Nikolov s work. We were hosted t socil functions such s cocktil prty nd lovely forml dinner. We took time out to explore on our own to shop nd to smple the vrious resturnts. It ws n interesting Congress nd well worth the visit to Bulgri. I would like to invite everyone to ttend the next FIDEM Congress in Belgium in It will hppen in the cities of Ghent nd Nmur. Yes two venues. I m sure you will not be disppointed if you ttend. The medls for this Congress need to be there by November 15th I will send out the informtion s soon s the forms re redy. A specil FIDEM in Belgium commemortive sculpture is to be fbricted using medls from ll countries.
