We hve grown so much over the yers nd ccomplished most of the things tht our founding members set s gols. Mny of our originl Bord of Directors re still serving on the bord. Through the yers, we hve dded mny new members to the bord. This is essentil in order to keep our governing body energized with fresh ides. All members of Chpter 190 re invited to ttend our bord meetings, nd I sincerely would like to see you ttend one. Mny of you ttended our meeting lst month in Snt Brbr. The lunch nd meeting portion ws excellent; however, I would like to pologize for the tour portion. With only one tour guide vilble, it ws impossible to do the complete tour s plnned. The courthouse tour is very interesting, nd I highly recommend tht you try to ttend one of the regulr tours the next time tht you re in the re. On sd note, I hve to inform you of the pssing of longtime NAWCC member, Fred Tischler. He ws mjor contributor nd instructor to the NAWCC's Field Suitcse Workshops, nd Chpter 124's workshops. Fred ws silver str fellow nd life member of the NAWCC. We will miss him. To ll of you potentil sellers out there, don't forget tht our nnul mrt will be little erlier this yer. 3 A Look Behind the Privte Lbel Prt 3 by Dve Cotsworth The Jccrd Fmily One cnnot discuss the history of jewelers in the Mid-west without discussing the Jccrd fmily. The Jccrd history is, indeed, somewht confusing one, in which severl different concerns existed nd re often mistken for one nother. This history begins in 1829 when Louis Jccrd, Swiss wtchmker, immigrted to the United Sttes nd settled in St. Louis. His first plce of business ws little shop locted on Min St., which he shred in prtnership with Chrles Recordon. In those dys, there ws considerble business in the city s St. Louis ws the gtewy to the West nd lso mjor stembot port on the Mississippi. In 1937, significnt robbery of $3,000 in goods took plce, nerly wiping the business out. At this point, Chrles Recordon left the business, dissolving the prtnership. Louis sent for his nephew, Eugene in 1837 nd, with his rrivl, renmed the business Louis Jccrd & Co. In 1848, Louis retired nd sold his interest in the firm to Eugene, who operted under the nme E. Jccrd. In 1852, he brought in A. S. Mermod (nother fmily member) s prtner nd then in 1855 dded Dvid Constnt Jccrd s third prtner. At tht point, the firm becme known s E. Jccrd & Co. (Note tht this sequence of events is reported in numerous sources, including the Jeweler's Circulr nd the History of Sint Louis City nd County. While the events re consistent, the dtes vry somewht. The dtes given here re from the History of Sint Louis City nd County.) As we see with mny businesses in this er, fire ws lwys thret nd the Jccrd business ws not immune. In My of 1849, fire swept through the city of St. Louis, completely destroying the store nd its contents. The prtners rebuilt beutiful store on 4th Street, between Pine nd Chestnut nd business continued briskly. In 1860, the firm moved to mrble building on the corner of 4th nd Olive Streets. The store ws then known s the Mrble Plce. The prtnership of E. Jccrd & Co. lsted until 1864 when it ws dissolved, with two businesses resulting. D. C. Jccrd & Co. ws formed by D. C. Jccrd, A. S. Mermod nd C. F. Mthey. A yer lter, Goodmn King would join the firm. This firm would become Mermod, Jccrd & Co. in 1873 nd then would lter be incorported s the Mermod & Jccrd Jewelry Co. The other firm creted by this split ws heded by Eugene Jccrd. This firm ws known s E. Jccrd & Co. Eugene pssed wy in 1871 nd his nephew, Eugene J. Cuendet, took over mngement of the firm, which, in 1880, would become known s the E. Jccrd Jewelry Compny. At the time, the firm occupied beutiful five-story building on the corner of Fifth nd Olive Streets. Eugene Cuendet died in 1894 t which time Thoms D. Witt becme president of the compny. (Thoms D. Witt hd previously been prtner in the Prouhet & Witt jewelry concern, which ws bought out by the E. Jccrd Jewelry Compny in 1872.) A third firm ws founded by members of this fmily when Eugene G. E. Jccrd nd Wlter M. Jccrd, D. C. Jccrd's sons, left Mermod & Jccrd in 1888 nd strted their own jewelry business in Knss City. Their store, known s the Jccrd Wtch nd Jewelry Compny, ws first locted t 815 Min Street nd lter, 1034 Min. When Eugene retired in 1895, the compny ws reorgnized by Wlter s the Jccrd Jewelry Corportion. A third brother, Ernest A. Jccrd, would sever ties with the St. Louis compny nd join his brothers in Knss City in The firm moved to 1017 Min in Wlter B. Jccrd, Eugene G. E. Jccrd's son, would lter hed the Knss City firm. Fire gin struck Mermod & Jccrd just before Christms of It ws sid tht the vults, loded with Christms merchndise, took full week to cool down enough to open. The compny ws, however, open for business in temporry qurters cross the street the following morning. In 1901, Mermod & Jccrd bought out the E. Jccrd Jewelry Compny, s well s Merrick, Wlsh & Phelps. The consolidted firm's nme ws chnged to Mermod, Jccrd & King in The firm of Mermod, Jccrd & King ws itself bought out by the generl merchndiser Scruggs, Vndervoort nd Brney in It incorported Mermod, Jccrd & King into its own downtown deprtment store nd lter into other stores in its chin. Scruggs, Vndervoort nd Brney would remin in business until finncil pressures cused them to close their doors in The wtch movement shown bove is mnufctured by the Illinois Wtch Compny for E. He went to college in Newport News, VA where he received Bchelor's Degree in Theter, with concentrtion in Design/Technology. Due to gret recession in the re, he moved to Los Angeles to seek employment. Jess now lives in Burbnk with his wife, Mureen. Jess is presently softwre project mnger for Ticketmster. He formerly worked s project mnger for firm tht instlls sound nd video equipment in theme prks nd museums, nd then s product developer for stge lighting mnufcturer, Jess grew up on frm nd ws lwys fscinted by the mchinery. When he ws 10 yers old, he mssed collection of bout 40 smll, inexpensive, clocks becuse they were mchines tht he could own nd tke prt himself. In bout 1997, his unt nd uncle took him to Pennsylvni for long weekend in Lncster County. One of their stops ws the NAWCC museum. As he moved towrd his teenge yers, the museum remined vivid in his memory, even fter he got out of clock collecting. By then he hd divested myself of ll his clocks except the one tht kick-strted his interest: circ 1870 Wterbury steeple clock gifted to him by tht sme unt nd uncle. Erly lst yer, he found Lwson cyclometer while browsing n ntique shop in Burbnk. Being in love with its Art Deco styling, he decided to purchse it. When it stopped running well, he decided to rech out to locl clock repirmn. Jess used the NAWCC service directory since he remembered the orgniztion from his childhood trip. The repirmn he contcted turned out to be Ken McWillims. Through his connection with Ken nd the Lwson clock expert he pointed him to, Neil Kuns, he becme member of Chpter 133 (Western Electrics) nd soon therefter Chpter 190. The welth of knowledge nd friendliness of the members surpssed his expecttions, nd he is gld to sy I've become collector gin. Jess is Chpter 190's Socil Medi Director, n Eduction Committee member, Computer Chir for 2016 Chnnel Islnds Regionl, nd the Chpter 133 Secretry ( strting in 2017). He enjoys hiking, off-roding, plying bnjo nd guitr, nd visiting plces of historicl significnce.

5 Tles From the Bench by Ferdinnd Geitner A Timekeeper The nme suggests some device tht mesures time. But wht if the time one is trying to mesure is not the usul 24 hours in dy, sixty minutes n hour which we tke for grnted nd probbly grew up with? Red on! An interesting rectngulr pocket wtch cme cross my bench recently. Attched to thin rope with bone hock on the other end, nd encsed in Tortoise Shell. The numerls re written in Jpnese nd the movement is rectngulr, with engrved pltes like smll clock, nd hs cylinder escpement. Western cylinder escpements usully hve steel escpe wheel with rised teeth intercting with steel cylinder. The designers consensus is tht the sme mterils wer more on ech other thn different mterils nd erly pocket wtches hd brss escpe wheels nd steel cylinders but they soon chnged to steel escpe wheels which performed stisfctorily. One often finds old cylinder wtches with grooves worn into the cylinder. This one hs flt, brss escpe wheel (see picture) which works with steel cylinder nd ws designed by Jpnese wtchmkers for the locl mrket. Locl mrket mens locl time. This mens it didn't indicte fixed hours!!! In the lte EDO period (1603 to 1868). Jpn still used temporl time which chnged with the sesons nd from sunrise to sunset. This explins why the dil on this pocket wtch hs numerls tht re movble depending on the sesons. Dwn nd dusk re mrked s the sixth hour nd it ws counted from 9 to six bckwrds; this stems from the period when time ws mesured by burning incense (reducing) but not counting the numbers 1 to 3 due to religious resons.
