The University is now entering a new era under the leadership of a new Vice- Chancellor, Professor R Merfyn Jones, and so too is your alumni relations programme. As well as a greater emphasis being placed upon the development of alumni relations as a core area of activity, the University has also decided to boost its fundraising programme culminating in 2009 when Bangor celebrates its 125th year was a very active year in terms of events and reunions and we have a great deal to report. Bangor played host to graduates of the English Department, to foresters, oceanographers, historians, engineers and teachers! The University was also supported at home in the UK in Bangor itself, in Cardiff, in London - and internationally in Pakistan and Singapore. This edition also contains news of key developments across the University and provides an insight into the lives of some of our graduates in a diverse range of professions and careers. On the agenda for 2005 is the development of departmental alumni activities and a launch event in October in North America, further details of which are available on page 22. Thank you to all who attended our events, and I sincerely hope the reunions brought back fond memories of your time at Bangor. 3 04 bangoriad bangoriad is turning out to be a momentous one in the history of the University in Bangor. gair gan yr is-ganghellor... Mae blwyddyn academaidd yn argoeli i fod yn un bwysig iawn yn hanes y Brifysgol ym Mangor. Am y drydedd flwyddyn yn olynol, croesawyd y nifer uchaf eto o israddedigion ac uwchraddedigion newydd yn yr hydref gan ddod â chyfanswm y myfyrwyr yn y Brifysgol i 10,000. Mae datblygu r Gyfraith fel maes pwnc newydd yma wedi symud ymlaen yn gyflym a llwyddiannus. Cafodd Ysgol y Gyfraith Bangor ei lansio mewn darlith a draddodwyd gan y Gwir Anrhydeddus Arglwydd Ustus Thomas gyda channoedd o gynrychiolwyr o fyd y gyfraith yng Ngogledd Cymru a thu hwnt yn bresennol. Mae cyllid Ewropeaidd wedi ein galluogi i sefydlu 50 o efrydiaethau PhD newydd, pob un yn cyflawni ymchwil arloesol wrth weithio â chwmnïau a busnesau yn y gymuned. Cafwyd newyddion cyffrous ym maes ymchwil yn ogystal. Y llynedd fe wnaethom lwyddo i gael grantiau ymchwil gwerth 20 miliwn - hwn yw r cyfanswm uchaf erioed ac mae n deyrnged glodwiw i waith caled ac ymroddiad ein hymchwilwyr drwy r Brifysgol gyfan. Yn dilyn darlith Rhodri Morgan y flwyddyn academaidd ddiwethaf, pryd y lansiwyd y Sefydliad Cymreig dros faterion Cymdeithasol a Diwylliannol, traddododd Sir John Krebs ddarlith sefydlu Ifanc - Sefydliad Cymru ar gyfer Bwyd, Bwyta n Iach a Byw n Heini - fis Tachwedd. Yn wir, mae r Brifysgol yn brysur iawn gyda chynlluniau newydd: daeth Carwyn Jones, y Gweinidog dros Faterion Gwledig, yma i agor y project MENTERRA arloesol, sydd wedi ei leoli yng nghanolfan ymchwil defnydd tir y Brifysgol yn Henfaes. Mae hwn yn ffrwyth cydweithio agos â nifer o bartneriaid yn cynnwys Cyngor Sir Gwynedd. Lansiwyd ein canolfan gwasanaethau busnes newydd yn Llanelwy gan Andrew Davies, y Gweinidog dros Ddatblygu Economaidd, a hefyd yn Chwefror, lansiodd IT Wales yn y Ganolfan Uwch Dechnoleg Meddalwedd ym Mharc Menai cyn mynd ymlaen i agoriad swyddogol yr adeilad Optic yn Llanelwy. Mae r datblygiadau hyn, a gefnogwyd gan Awdurdod Datblygu Cymru, y Cynulliad Cenedlaethol a r Undeb Ewropeaidd yn allweddol bwysig i economi r rhanbarth ac mae r Brifysgol yn falch o fod mor gysylltiedig â r mentrau cyffrous a rhyngwladol eu safon hyn. 04 Yn Ionawr sefydlwyd Ysgol Glinigol Gogledd Cymru, sy n bartneriaeth rhwng Prifysgol Caerdydd, NEWI, y tair Ymddiriedolaeth GIG a ni. Cynllun newydd uchelgeisiol yw hwn i ymestyn addysg feddygol yng Ngogledd Cymru ac mae r Brifysgol yn edrych ymlaen at gymryd rhan flaenllaw yn natblygiad academaidd yr Ysgol Glinigol. Wrth gwrs, mae Gwyddorau Iechyd eisoes yn faes astudio ac ymchwil pwysig yn y Brifysgol ac eleni, er enghraifft, gwelwyd agor ein Sefydliad Cronfa Ymchwil y Gogledd Orllewin i Ganser, a r bartneriaeth newydd â r Ysgol Glinigol a fydd yn cadarnhau r ddarpariaeth honno ymhellach. Dros yr ychydig fisoedd diwethaf mae'r Brifysgol hefyd, yn dilyn arolwg gofalus, wedi gwneud newidiadau pellgyrhaeddol i fframwaith rheoli r sefydliad er mwyn gwella effeithiolrwydd a gwneud penderfyniadau. Mae cynifer ag 80 o bwyllgorau wedi diflannu! Mae arolwg pwysig o drefniadau a blaenoriaethau ariannol yn cael ei gynnal yn ogystal yn wyneb ansicrwydd ynglŷn â chyllido Addysg Uwch yng Nghymru. Diben yr arolygon a r newidiadau hyn yw sicrhau bod y Brifysgol yn cyflawni ei chenhadaeth yn llwyddiannus - sef bod yn rhagorol ym mhopeth y mae n ei wneud - mewn ymchwil, dysgu, trydedd genhadaeth a gwasanaethau i fyfyrwyr. Mae angen i adeiladau hefyd fod yn rhagorol ac mae rhaglen lawn dychymyg o adeiladu newydd ar y gweill. Ymysg pethau eraill, bydd hon yn rhoi Canolfan yr Amgylchedd newydd i Gymru ym Mangor, a fydd yn gartref i wyddonwyr y Brifysgol a r Ganolfan Ecoleg a Hydroleg. Hefyd agorir Canolfan Datblygu Rheolaeth a 1000 o ystafelloedd newydd, modern ar gyfer myfyrwyr ar safle Ffriddoedd. Yn unol â chenhadaeth y Brifysgol o gynnal rhagoriaeth, profiad dymunol iawn oedd gweld Dr Judy Hutchings o r Ysgol Seicoleg yn cael ei chydnabod yn Addysgwr Benywaidd y flwyddyn yn seremoni gwobrwyon Merch Gymreig y Flwyddyn a gynhaliwyd yng Nghaerdydd yn Rhagfyr. Llongyfarchiadau iddi hi ac i bawb arall sy n gweithio mor galed i gynnal ac ymestyn enw da Bangor fel Prifysgol flaengar o r safon uchaf sydd wedi ymroi n llwyr i ragoriaeth. Mae yn argoeli i fod yn un bwysig iawn yn hanes y Brifysgol ym Mangor...Following The academic year is turning out to be a momentous one in the history of the University in Bangor. We welcomed, for the third year in a row, a record number of new undergraduates and post-graduates in the autumn bringing the total number of students at the University to 10,000. The development of law as a new subject area for us has progressed rapidly and successfully. The Bangor Law School was launched at a lecture delivered by the Rt. Hon. Lord Justice Thomas and attended by hundreds of representatives of the legal world in North Wales and beyond. European funding has allowed us to launch no fewer than 50 new Ph.D. studentships, each one conducting leading edge research while working with companies and businesses in the community. There was also exciting news on the research front. Our total research grant capture for last year amounted to 20 million our highest ever total and an eloquent tribute to the hard-work and dedication of our researchers across the University. Following Rhodri Morgan s lecture last academic year which launched the Welsh Institute of Social and Cultural Affairs, Sir John Krebs delivered the inaugural lecture of Ifanc, the Institute of Food, Active Living and Nutrition Cymru, in November. Indeed the University is very busy with new initiatives: Carwyn Jones, the Minister for Rural Affairs, opened the pioneering MENTERRA project based at the University s Land-use research centre at Henfaes. This is the fruit of close co-operation with a number of partners including Gwynedd County Council. Andrew Davies, the Minister for Economic Development, launched our new business services centre at St. Asaph and also, in February, launched IT Wales at the Centre for Advanced Software Technology on Parc Menai before going on to the official opening of the Optic building in St.Asaph. These developments, supported by the WDA, the Welsh Assembly and the European Union are crucially important to the economy of the region and the University is proud to be centrally involved with these exciting, world-class ventures. > 01 Y Gwir Anrhydeddus Arglwydd Ustus John Thomas. Dechreuwyd dysgu y Gyfraith am y tro cyntaf mis Medi. Hwn yw r datblygiad pwysicaf ym maes dysgu yn y Brifysgol yn ystod y flwyddyn diwethaf. The Rt. Hon. Lord Justice John Thomas. The first cohort of students began their course in September. This is the most significant development for the University in the field of teaching during the last year. a word from the vice-chancellor... In January the North Wales Clinical School, a partnership between Cardiff University, NEWI, the three NHS Trusts and ourselves was launched. This is a high-profile new initiative to extend medical education in north Wales and the University looks forward to driving ahead with the academic development of the Clinical School. Health Sciences are, of course, already a major field of study and research at the University, and this year saw the opening of our North West Cancer Research Fund Institute, for example, and the new partnership with the Clinical School will serve further to strengthen that provision. Over the last few months the University has also, following a careful review, instituted far-reaching changes to the management structure of the institution in order to improve efficiency and decision-making. As many as 80 committees have disappeared! A major review of financial arrangements and priorities is also taking place against a background of uncertainty concerning the funding of Higher Education in Wales. The purpose of these reviews and changes is to ensure that the University successfully achieves its mission to be excellent in all that it does in research, teaching, third mission and services to students. Accommodation also needs to be excellent and an imaginative programme of new building is in train which will, amongst other things, provide Bangor with a stunning new Environment Centre for Wales, to house both University and Centre for Ecology and Hydrology environmental scientists, a Management Development Centre and 1000 new, modern rooms for student accommodation on the Ffriddoedd site. In line with the University s mission of maintaining excellence it was appropriate and very welcome that Dr. Judy Hutchings of the School of Psychology was acknowledged as the outstanding Woman Educator of the year at the Welsh Woman of the Year awards in Cardiff in December. Congratulations to her and to all those others who are working so hard to maintain and extend Bangor s reputation as a first-class, forward-looking University dedicated to excellence.

4 06 newyddion y brifysgol university news 07 To be excellent in all that it does - in research, teaching, third mission and services to students Professor R Merfyn Jones, Vice-Chancellor 06 on a mission Bangor has a long tradition of academic excellence and offers a quality learning experience in a truly unique environment. From 58 students and 10 teaching staff in 1884, Bangor is now home to 10,000 students and offers over 250 undergraduate bachelor degrees and over 100 postgraduate programmes. Teaching and Learning Expanding opportunities The University is committed to widening participation and raising aspirations in young people. The Talent Opportunities Programme is one of the largest schoolsbased programmes of its kind in the UK with around 1,500 pupils taking part. Teaching in the community The University plays an important role in providing a range of flexible part-time study options throughout north Wales. Various new initiatives at the Department of Lifelong Learning ensured that a range of different courses were offered for the first time across the region. The first foundation degree in Management of Care became available at Bangor and Wrexham via a partnership with Coleg Menai and the first ever north Wales based Accelerated Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Therapy also commenced as a joint venture with the University of Wales College of Medicine. In November, Andrew Davies AM launched two new HE Certificates, one in IT and Community Enterprise and the other in Personal and Professional Skills Development. Welsh Medium Strategy Deciding whether Welsh-language provision in higher education should be extended is one of the key decisions for Wales over the next decade, according to First Minister Rhodri Morgan. Bangor is set to extend Welsh medium teaching further having won two of five new teaching Fellowships which are awarded by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales for this purpose. Woman of the year Dr Judy Hutchings was awarded the prestigious Western Mail Welsh Woman of the Year Woman as Educator Award. A child psychologist, she is Director of the Incredible Years Wales Centre at the School of Psychology. Through her work and research, the 'Incredible Years' programmes, developed in the US to tackle children with behavioural problems, have been widely adopted in Wales. Dr Hutchings is also a Consultant Clinical Psychologist with the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service for the North West Wales NHS Trust. Also short-listed in the final three for the Woman in Science & Technology Award was Professor Sian Hope of the School of Informatics. Professor Hope is one of the UK's few women Professors of Computer Science. > Prof Sian Hope (left) with Dr Judy Hutchings. A Global Community Recently ranked in the top 500 universities world-wide, international collaboration is high on the agenda. Students from over 70 countries are welcomed to the University each year and students from Bangor can study in Europe and also undertake the second year of their degree course at partner universities in the USA, Canada, Hong Kong or South Korea. A range of language workshops, pre-masters and foundation courses are also available at Bangor for international students in preparation for degree and postgraduate study. Third Mission Activity The University is committed to contributing to the wider community through many different activities, from the cultural life of Wales to supporting economic growth. Recent developments include: The Bangor IT WALES office at the School of Informatics was opened officially on 24 February by Andrew Davies AM. Supported by the EU Objective 1 programme, the scheme will broker partnerships between higher education and business across the region and in Wales as a whole. Andrew Davies AM also recently launched the University s new business services centre at the St.Asaph Business Park. At Unit 27, individuals and businesses can find information about all the services, courses and resources offered by the University to the community. The Unit can also provide space to support business growth and deliver tailored training courses. Visit: CAST Professors Sian Hope, Nigel John and Phil Lane of the School of Informatics have been closely involved in the implementation of the Centre for Advanced Software Technology a centre for business incubation at Parc Menai, Bangor. The centre represents a 16 million investment into the local economy by the WDA, Welsh Assembly Government and EU (Objective 1). Professor Hope has been designated as Technical Director where she will contribute her expertise in software engineering and business development and support. Professor Nigel John organised The Tenth Annual Web3D Symposium which was held at CAST in March/April The Symposium is the premiere event in the Web3D community, uniting researchers, developers, experimenters and content creators in a dynamic learning environment. Attendees share and explore methods of using, enhancing or creating new 3D web technology such as X3D, VRML, MPEG4, OpenHSF, and Java3D. A keynote speaker at the event was Dr Martin Reddy, a lead engineer with Pixar Animation Studio, creators of The Incredibles, Toy Story, Monsters Inc and other groundbreaking films. 3D technology is also contributing to medical training as well as surgical planning and diagnosis. > 01 Meri Huws, David Joyner, Merfyn Jones and Andrew Davies AM at the launch of Unit 27/Meri Huws, David Joyner, Merfyn Jones ac Andrew Davies AC adeg lansio Uned 27 > 02 Students at graduation/myfyrwyr adeg graddio > 03 Soccer legend and Honorary Fellow Mark Hughes lent his weight to the University s Talent Opportunities Programme by presenting 1,000 scholarships to the first students from the scheme to graduate to University/Gwelir y pêl-droediwr enwog a r Cymrawd er Anrhydedd Mark Hughes yn dangos ei gefnogaeth i Raglen Dawn a Chyfle y Brifysgol trwy gyflwyno Ysgoloriaethau gwerth 1,000 i fyfyrwyr cyntaf y cynllun i raddio i r Brifysgol. > 04 Dr Martin Reddy of Pixar Animation Studio with Professor Nigel John/Dr Martin Reddy o Pixar Animation Studio gyda r athro Nigel John. 05 Addysgu a Dysgu Strategaeth Cyfrwng Cymraeg Penderfynu p run a ddylid ymestyn darpariaeth Gymraeg mewn addysg uwch yw un o r prif benderfyniadau sy n wynebu Cymru yn ystod y degawd nesaf, yn ôl y prif weinidog Rhodri Morgan. 5 08 newyddion y brifysgol bangor and baghdad 08 > "Our country is now struggling to overcome two recent wars as well as thirty years of mismanagement and neglect. It is hoped that this Memorandum of Understanding will reinvigorate our research and development in various areas and reintegrate Iraqi students and academics into the international intellectual community" Dr Wail Al-Rifaie, President of the University of Technology, Baghdad. The University became the first in the United Kingdom to sign an official agreement with an Iraqi higher education institution post-war. The agreement between the Centre for Arid Zone Studies and the University of Technology, Baghdad aims to aid environmental management and monitoring skills in the country. One of the main issues is the salinity problem caused by the draining of Iraq s historic marshlands in the 1990 s, when thousands of people were driven into destitution as Saddam Hussein dried up the water that had sustained a way of life dating back around 5,000 years. The marshlands, once the size of Wales, became a desiccated wasteland as a result. The agreement will facilitate the exchange of expertise and support post-graduate and professional training in environmental studies, water resources management and other crucial areas After the destruction caused by the air raids on Baghdad, Dr Al-Rifaie s students returned to sit their exams in buildings with no.. electricity or running water, and no fans in heat as much as 50 o C. > 02 Dr Wail Al-Rifaie and Dr Ian Robinson, Director of the Centre for.. Arid Zone Studies sign the agreement ? A discovery by a Bangor Psychologist has made news headlines around the globe. In a paper published by Nature Neuroscience, Alan Pegna of the School of Psychology describes how a patient who is technically blind has been able to interpret emotion displayed on a human face. The news was reported by The Times, The Daily Telegraph and The Independent newspapers in the UK and carried on news websites across the globe, including the USA, Vietnam and South Africa. is this a 'sixth sense'? The man, called 'Patient X' was blinded after a stroke damaged the areas of the brain that process visual signals. When shown images of shapes such as circles and squares, his guesses would be correct with no more than random frequency. However, when 'Patient X' was shown faces displaying emotions such as happiness, anger, fear or sadness, his guesses registered well above the levels of chance. This has led Dr Alan Pegna with research colleagues at Bangor and Geneva University Hospital, to establish that emotion displayed on a human face is registered in an area other than the visual cortex. The area involved was identified as the right amygdala, an almond-shape structure situated deep within the brain's temporal lobe. According to Dr Pegna, "This discovery is also interesting for behavioural scientists as the right amygdala has been associated with subliminal processing of emotional stimuli in clinically 'healthy' individuals. What 'Patient X' has assisted us in establishing is that this area undoubtedly processes visual facial signals connected with all types of emotional facial expressions." TSUNAMI CONCERT The enormity of the Asian Tsunami will be with us for a long time. In collaboration with the Bangor DVLA Office, the University hosted a concert at the Prichard Jones Hall to raise funds for the Tsunami Disaster appeal on 26 January. The new centres will enable pioneering research whilst also contributing to the training of scientists, doctors, nurses and health workers in the region. Unique within Wales and equipped to standards barely matched elsewhere in the UK, the new Cancer Research Fund Institute will conduct world class research into the fundamental causes of cancer. The University, in collaboration with ELWa and the North West Cancer Research Fund has invested over 3 million in the new institute, housed in a suite of newly refurbished laboratories in the Brambell Building which will eventually accommodate 50 scientists. Bangor has invested heavily in state-of-the-art technology which places the Institute on a par with research institutes world wide. Seven research groups will be led by Dr. Thomas Caspari, who will also run a large international group. The research interests of the Institute include angiogenesis, chromosome translocation mechanisms, DNA damage recovery, cellular signaling, cellular structure and colorectal cancer. Recently appointed (pictured right) are Dr Jürgen Müller, currently a research fellow at the US National Cancer Institute in Maryland, USA, Dr Oliver Fleck, currently running his own research team at Bern University in Switzerland, and Dr Michael Cross from Uppsala University of Sweden. The Institute will carry out fundamental molecular and cellular biology research with the goal of understanding basic processes that result in tumour formation and identifying and understanding potential drug targets. Future cancer therapies are going to be largely driven by a detailed understanding of cancer biology and treatments will become increasingly tailored to suit a specific cellular defect. The University s aim is to make a major contribution to the international research effort aimed at understanding the fundamental molecular basis of the collection of proliferative diseases known as cancer. Renewable sources such as wind wave and solar power are already being used to produce a small percentage of UK energy needs, but if the government's targets are to be met, the contribution needs to be more significant and the technology more cost-effective. This project, currently the largest UK project in the field, aims to find cheap energy alternatives for dwindling world fossil fuel stocks. Professor Stuart Irvine, of Bangor s Chemistry Department, is managing the project. "Renewable energy must grow and become more visible in the 21st century. To do this it must become cost effective. The aim of this research is to slash the costs of providing solar energy by half. The technology used to derive electrical energy from the sun, photovoltaics, provides, theoretically, the best solution, even in the UK, though current technology means that there are high 'front-end' costs to the technology, and consequently take-up has been low. This new UK research into photovoltaics, or solar cell technology, has brought together six university and seven industrial partners with the aim of finding novel ways for driving down costs and making solar power generation a cost-effective alternative. Antarctica... virtual chemistry Experts in north Wales are about to step into the world of virtual chemistry with the establishment of a hi-tech research centre, only the second of its kind in the UK. The Molecular Modelling and Visualisation Centre, to be established at the University's Chemistry Department got the go-ahead after a 1.4m European Objective 1 bid. Dr Thomas diary of the expedition was published on The Natural History Museum website, and he was invited to brief a meeting of Royal Geographic Society members in London. His research could provide vital new evidence about the effects of climate change on ice in both the Antarctic and Arctic oceans. The 'virtual' aspect of the facility enables the user, through a technique called 'data immersion', to 'get inside' and in-between molecules in a virtual quantum world. Chemists from the University and industry will gain a greater understanding of the properties and performance of different materials without actually having to experiment on the materials themselves. "Creating this Centre at the Chemistry Department will put us ahead of the game in attracting and retaining world class researchers in this field at Bangor. In addition it establishes a first class infrastructure to help attract new, ambitious, inward investors in the high tech materials business offering new employment opportunities to those who wish to live and work in the region," Department Head, Dr John Macdonald

8 15 14 newyddion ymchwil research news 15 the kyoto protocol 14 The Kyoto Protocol, established in 1997, finally came into effect on Tuesday 16 February An international agreement, it sets targets for industrialised countries to cut their greenhouse gas emissions. These gasses are considered at least partly responsible for global warming - the rise in global temperature which may have catastrophic consequences for life on Earth. Industrialised countries have committed to cut their combined emissions to 5% below 1990 levels by EU countries are expected to cut their present emissions by 8% and Japan by 5%. US President George W Bush pulled out of the Kyoto Protocol in 2001, saying implementing it would gravely damage the US economy. His administration dubbed the treaty "fatally flawed", partly because it does not require developing countries to commit to emissions reductions. Mr Bush says he backs emissions reductions through voluntary action and new energy technologies. Now, a major new carbon dioxide threat to climate stability and water supplies has been discovered. A series of seminal experiments, published in the journal Nature, on 8 July 2004, have revealed that rising carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), is causing a massive increase in dissolved chemicals in Britain's waters. The chemicals (called DOC or dissolved organic carbon) could harm our health and accelerate current rises in atmospheric CO 2 levels. The discovery was made by a team led by wetland researcher Dr Chris Freeman at the University's School of Biological Sciences. The massive increase in river DOC means two things: firstly it can produce cancer-causing by-products when waters are treated with chlorine for drinking water supplies and secondly when DOC breaks down to CO 2 in the environment it adds further to global warming, and causes even more DOC increases in our rivers. "It's like a vicious circle, where the problem gets, not just worse and worse, but faster and faster, the longer the process goes on." says Chris Freeman. The dramatic rises in DOC were first recognised by Freeman and colleagues in rivers draining peatlands back in But until now, no one realised that rising CO 2 emissions were causing the problem. Back in 2001 they reported that river DOC had increased 65% since I was astounded when I heard from my colleagues at the Natural Environment Research Council's Centre for Ecology and Hydrology that the latest Acid Waters Monitoring Network data shows that the increase has now gone above 90% for the first time. said Freeman The rate of acceleration suggests that we have disturbed something critical that controls the stability of the carbon cycle on our planet. CO 2 emissions must be brought under control. Freeman, who served on the UK United Nations Climate Change and Energy Forum in explained that "International attempts to slow current rises in CO 2 have failed mainly due to the refusal of United States President Bush to sign up to the Kyoto Protocol". Carbon dioxide is implicated in the DOC problem, and 25% of all CO 2 emissions come from just one country - the USA. 01 Chris Freeman We've known for some time that CO 2 levels have been rising and that these could cause global warming. But this new research has enormous implications because it shows that even without global warming; rising CO 2 can damage our environment." > 01 Dr Freeman being interviewed for the BBC s World Service What should we do now? The best option would be to persuade the USA to join in, so that together we can increase our efforts to switch to non-fossil fuel technologies. A more extreme option might be to dig up all our peatlands as these are the main source of the DOC, but that would never be popular because of their wildlife interest. Perhaps the only realistic approach is to batten down the hatches and prepare for extreme climate changes even sooner than we expected. Global warming aside, however, we must still protect our water supplies. Fortunately the UK water industry is already responding by improving water treatment. But all this costs money. According to Freeman, one thing is certain, if we can't persuade Bush to take CO 2 emissions more seriously, we're the ones who will end up paying with ever-rising water bills and an ever more unpredictable climate. Dr Freeman has been awarded a prestigious Royal Society Industry Fellowship. For the next four years he will spend half of his time working alongside United Utilities Operational Services (UUOS) to help Dwr Cymru Welsh Water prepare for future climate change. "We in the University are really keen to help local industry. It's a real privilege to be able to get this deeply involved in something that will affect all of us in Wales (as water consumers) thanks to the Royal Society Scheme." researchin brief /ymchwilcrynodeb The web keeping a weather eye A new website detailing twenty-four hour weather and water conditions along the Menai Strait has been launched. The project is a joint exercise between the Countryside Council for Wales and the University s School of Ocean Sciences. The main focus of the project will be conservation in the Menai Strait and nearby Conwy Bay - one of Europe s most important marine wildlife sites. Academics, conservationists, locals and visitors can all benefit from the website at Explosive sensor technology patented New technology patented by researchers at the Chemistry Department could lead to the development of ultra-sensitive sensors able to detect the presence of explosive materials. The sensors will have many security and military applications including being developed for use in the war against terrorism. It is the innovative collaboration of molecular biology and chemistry that has enabled the team to develop the novel sensor technology 'nano-dog' to be developed to commercial prototype. Much as the glucose pens used by diabetics employ enzymes to test blood-sugar levels, this complex high-tech sensor uses uniquely adapted and patented enzymes to detect the presence of explosive materials. Chris Gwenin has been developing the project under the guidance of Chemistry s Dr Maher Kalaji and Biological Sciences Professor Peter Williams. He has been employed under a CASE Studentship, working with University spin-off company, Trwyn. Success for Humanities Researchers Researchers in the humanities at the University were the best in Wales at gaining outside support for their research last year. Applications for additional money are very competitive - often only one in five applications succeed - and only the very best researchers in the UK are successful. Figures collated by the main arts funding council, the Arts and Humanities Research Board (AHRB), show that income per member of staff at Bangor was higher than in universities like Cardiff and Aberystwyth, with Bangor the only Welsh university within the UK top 20. Professor Duncan Tanner, Director of Bangor's Humanities Research Centre, stated: 'We had successes across the board - in history, music, Welsh and English. Much of the funding goes to individual researchers, and is a clear indication of their standing within their subject'. 01 Natur Llywodraeth y Tywysogion Am y tro cyntaf, mae casgliad cyfan o ddogfennau llywodraethol y tywysogion Cymreig, wedi eu golygu gyda chrynodebau llawn yn Saesneg a nodiadau manwl, wedi ei gyhoeddi gan Wasg y Brifysgol. 9 16 reunited reunited 17 reunited: walking with students Tim Haines studied zoology at Bangor from He has worked on BBC programmes and produced Walking with Dinosaurs. It turned out in my small sample that most students were at Bangor because they, too, had chosen it. I always imagined it was one of those midlife crisis things buying a sports car, wearing inappropriate leather trousers and going back to your old university. So when I was recently asked to return to my old college in Bangor, North Wales, I must confess I was more than a little self-conscious. It is 24 years since I walked away from this remote outpost of higher education with a zoology degree, and my only recent experience of educational establishments has been visiting potential schools for my children. I decided to adopt the same state of mind with Bangor and try to judge whether I would like my children to follow in my footsteps. The visit started with a lecture. In the 1970s, that usually involved a man in a jumper, with long hair and a long beard, trying to introduce us to the alien delights of subjects such as genetic drift and allele frequencies. And that is exactly what I got this time. However, I did find the whole thing fascinating. Did you know that in 1930 there were only 30 elephant seals left in the world and there are now 150,000? This is a conservation triumph, but one that has left the seals with dreadful inbreeding problems. Across the whole day there was much that reminded me of my time there. The facilities had improved, but the smell of chicken dissection was the same. The biggest single difference to the life of the student seemed to be the computer. In 1979, computers lived in the computer labs and, except for a few compulsory courses; I generally tried to avoid them. Now it seemed as though I was never more than 5m from one and, by logging on to the intranet, students could chat with friends, check the state of their loans or catch up on missed lectures. The computer seems to have become the conduit through which most social and academic life flows. Bangor remains very strong in the biological sciences and, as such, is at least partly responsible for the world glut in zoology graduates. But in an attempt to help these poor souls find work, it has strengthened the molecular aspects of the degree and grown a whole new Institute for Molecular Cancer Research. As a parent I was interested to know why the students I met had decided to come to Bangor. I remember many years ago choosing Bangor first and being scoffed at by some lecturer in Durham. It turned out in my small sample that most students were at Bangor because they, too, had chosen it. They had researched the courses, visited the campus and made the choice themselves. There was also a sense that they had been put off bigger-name universities because a carefully cultivated reputation was not really high on their agendas. So, as a parent, would I recommend it to my children? Well, I would be delighted if they did go there, but it really is none of my business. It is their choice. My only hope is that they get the most out of it and stick at the course until the end, but in countryside as beautiful as north Wales that cannot be too hard a task. The University aims to maintain lifelong links with its past students, promote your achievements and facilitate contact between old friends, departments and colleagues. The recent management re-structure has also prompted a re-organisation of alumni affairs and the Vice-Chancellor himself is now driving the programme! The local alumni branch, the Old Students Association, will continue to operate and organise events independently for locally based alumni and promote activities through the medium of Welsh, and will be supported by the University s Alumni Office. A member of the OSA is nominated to sit on the Council - the University s governing body, to represent the views of former students. The re-structuring process has inevitably caused some delays to the development of the programme, such as the expansion of the membership benefits scheme (initially piloted with membership cards for 2004 graduates) and the range of leisure and retail incentives promised. However, this is the beginning of a new era, so bear with us if there are teething problems. In short, we are endeavouring to make Bangor s alumni programme more focused and more relevant. The University welcomes and values your support. Are you a Conservation Officer, Educational Psychologist, Translator etc. able to offer a shadowing opportunity? Do you have the knowledge and expertise to pass on to someone interested in your career sector? Are you interested in being a mentor for someone who is keen to set up in business? This initiative made Bangor the first University to offer a degree in Forestry in Britain. Over the weekend of June, ninety alumni and staff with partners and friends gathered together to celebrate 100 years of forestry teaching at Bangor. Activities over the weekend provided an insight into current forestry teaching and research (the latter placed in the top UK group in the last Research Assessment Exercise) within the School of Agricultural and Forest Sciences. One excursion dealt with the wider aspects of ecology, conservation and landscape using sites in the Conwy Valley, whilst the others visited Continuous Cover experiments at Gwydyr and Clocaenog. At the Saturday evening reception and dinner in the Prichard Jones Hall, the guest speaker was Martin Gale, alumnus and Vice-President International Forestry UPM-Kymmene. Sunday morning offered an insight into the BangorFACE (Free Air Carbon Enrichment) experiment at Henfaes, where, in parallel with EuroFACE, Bangor is investigating carbon sequestration of the whole broadleaf forest ecosystem under the higher levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide expected in the future. Others opted for the customary trip up Snowdon. A few who were able to extend the weekend had an enjoyable visit to the Royal Forestry Society s Charles Ackers Redwood Grove and Pinetum near Welshpool - a first revisit after 50 years for some! My research on freshwater science has taken me all over the world, and I am still publishing on African lakes. His activities as accompanist for the UCNW Gilbert and Sullivan Society and Choral/Orchestral Society had stood him in good stead for in 1976 he joined the staff of the D Oyly Carte Opera Company, working as orchestra manager and repetiteur. When D Oyly Carte disbanded in 1982 he went freelance as pianist and teacher, and continued professional development by gaining a Fellowship diploma in Music Education from Trinity College, London. For the past seven years he has used his German language skills and knowledge of operetta to undertake part-time research on Franz Lehàr for a Ph.D. from Liverpool University. Brian Hodgkin 1973 Forestry I am currently Director of the Summer Institute of Linguistics (Wycliffe Bible Translators) Papua New Guinea Branch. After graduating I spent a year completing a PGCE at Loughborough, taught Biology/Science in the UK for 10 years then joined Wycliffe Bible Translators as a Literacy Specialist. For the last 5 years I have been involved in administration and am currently the director of SIL work here in PNG. I would like to contact John Hook from my class at Bangor. It is always good to get the Bangoriad here in PNG. Jill Houlden (née Otter) 1973 St Mary s College I was at St. Mary s from and I enjoyed it enormously. North Wales had been my favourite area since my childhood, so I was thrilled to get a place at Bangor. I became a committed Christian in my first year and helped run the college Christian Fellowship. I still correspond with several college friends. Yvonne Thomas is now Mrs Peck, and we both do supply teaching in the Mansfield area. I work in primary schools now and enjoy it much more than secondary. I ve kept in touch with both Miss Eluned Roberts and Dr Gweneth Lilly, who so encouraged me to take the B.Ed course. Earlier this year I was in Bangor for Gweneth s funeral. She welcomed me to her home several times, and we wrote often. I really miss her letters. Pamela Murray (née Davis) 1974 St Mary s College I went back to the Wirral and started teaching second year juniors at Mill Park Junior School with fellow ex St. Mary s student Janis Davies. I taught at Mill Park for eleven years, and remember great hilarity in the staffroom mostly at the expense of our Head who was a double for the actor Leonard Rossiter (Mr Rigby of Rising Damp fame). In 1984 I took part in Mission England when Billy Graham came to the UK. I found myself talking to people on the hallowed Anfield pitch. It was also when I met my future husband, also a teacher in Further Education. In January 1985 Chris was offered a position in Brisbane. We married in July 1985 and moved to Brisbane in January At first I did supply work in local schools coming into contact with Vietnamese boat children. In April 1987 our first daughter, Sarah was born. Twenty months later she was joined by our second daughter, Rebecca. Neither of them are keen on teaching! For the last few years we have been playing as a host family for overseas students, mainly Japanese, Hong Kong and Chinese - a very enjoyable experience. Our latest venture is opening our home as Bed and Breakfast accommodation. Look us up at for the state of Queensland under the name of Jacaranda Lodge, Springwood. I have kept up my teaching over the years doing supply and contracts both in state and private schools and have taught children from many far flung places. My favourite group would have to be the Pacific Island children from Samoa or Tonga, as they are full of mischief but always very happy. Fond Regards, Pam. Elaine Rowe, (née Jones) 1974 St Mary s College After leaving St. Mary s I moved to Southport. I spent my first year teaching in Gateacre Comprehensive in Liverpool where I taught needlework 4 days and went to college 1 day. I then moved to a junior school in Preston where I taught Language Development. By this time I had had my daughter and I moved back to Wales, where I took up supply teaching. I then took up a Craft Instructor position for Social Services in Denbigh in a new post and centre. I became Deputy Manager and later the Centre Organiser and it was during this time I had my other two children. I spent a long time in this post and found it enjoyable and rewarding. It was with regret that I found the Centre was to be closed and I was unemployed. I am now on an Interior Design course in College. My children are 28, 22 and 14 and I have 4 grandchildren.

David Wyn Williams Roeddwn yn gweithio ar yr awyren ymladd y Lightning am ddwy flynedd a bûm yn ddigon lwcus i hedfan yn yr awyren ddwy sedd nifer o weithiau gan ddringo i 40,000 o droedfeddi a theithio yn llawer cyflymach na sŵn. Effeithiwyd yn arw ar ein ffatri ni ac amryw eraill pan wnaeth Harold Wilson a'i griw ganslo r TSR2 yn 1965/6 ac roedd y rhagolygon yn ddrwg er imi lwyddo i ddal fy ngafael ar fy swydd drwy r diswyddiadau. Roeddwn yn meddwl y byddai pethau n well yn y diwydiant niwclear ac y byddwn yn cael cyfle i ddod yn ôl i Gymru (Wylfa neu Trawsfynydd) ac felly cefais swydd fel Ffisegydd Iechyd yng ngorsaf Oldbury ger Bryste. Ond ar ôl dwy flynedd roeddwn wedi cael digon ar waith diflas a dim gobaith i gael unrhyw gynnwrf. Felly, ar ôl cysylltu â m cyn-bennaeth fe euthum yn ôl at yr awyrennau yn Warton. Roedd profi awyrennau n waith cyffrous iawn! Ar ôl y Lightning daeth y Jaguar. Roedd hon yn cael ei rhannu rhwng y DU a Ffrainc ac felly bûm yn gweithio ar hon am flynyddoedd.roeddem yn cydweithio llawer â r Ffrancwyr yn eu safle profi yn Istres, ger Marseille yn ne Ffrainc. Un uchafbwynt i mi oedd cael mynd ar y llong cario awyrennau Clemencau i weld y Jaguar yn cael ei phrofi dros y Sianel. Olynwyd y Jaguar gan y Tornado, a oedd yn broject ar y cyd rhwng Prydain, yr Eidal a r Almaen. Cefais fy newis i fod yn gyfrifol am yr un gyntaf i gael ei hadeiladu. Roedd yn waith prysur iawn ac roeddem yn gweithio n hwyr a dros benwythnosau n aml. Fi oedd y peiriannydd cyntaf i gael hedfan yn y Tornado. Cefais ddilyn hynt yr awyren o r diwrnod cyntaf hyd nes iddi ddechrau cael ei defnyddio gan luoedd awyr Prydain, yr Almaen, yr Eidal a Saudi Arabia. Ar ôl ymwneud â r profi am 20 mlynedd cefais fy ngwneud yn Rheolwr Project. Bryd hynny roeddwn yn un o r tîm a oedd yn ceisio gwerthu r Tornado i wlad Iorddonen ac wedyn i Falaysia. Roeddwn yn teithio n ôl a blaen i r gwledydd hyn yn rheolaidd ac yn dod i gysylltiad rheolaidd â swyddogion eu llysgenadaethau a chadfridogion eu lluoedd awyr. Mae n cymryd blynyddoedd i werthu awyrennau oherwydd bod cymaint o fanylion i w datrys a r prisiau mor uchel. Y cam nesaf oedd bod yn gyfrifol am ran o'r byd lle'r oedd gan British Aerospace (erbyn hynny) gwsmeriaid. Y Dwyrain Canol ac Affrica oedd y rhan a gefais i. Bûm yn teithio n helaeth i Nigeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Angola a De Affrica, a hefyd i Kuwait, Oman, Dubai a'r UAE yn y Dwyrain Canol. Cafwyd marchnad newydd i awyrennau yn Ne Affrica yn dilyn y newidiadau gwleidyddol yno a Mandela'n dod yn arlywydd. Yn 1991 yr euthum yno gyntaf. Mae'n wlad ddiddorol dros ben nad oes llawer ym Mhrydain yn gwybod amdani, yn enwedig yn y cyfnod newydd ar ôl dymchwel apartheid. Yn 1996 cefais gynnig dod i redeg y swyddfa yn Pretoria a daeth fy ngwraig ataf i fyw yno. Buom yn tan fis Gorffennaf 2000 pan gefais ymddeol.roedd hwn yn amser da i ymddeol oherwydd roeddem newydd werthu 24 awyren Hawk a 28 o awyrennau Gripen i lywodraeth De Affrica. Byddant yn derbyn yr Hawk gyntaf yn 2005 a r Gripen gyntaf yn 2008, ac felly mae'r gwaith yn parhau dros gyfnod pur faith. Felly, dyna pam bod hwn yn dod i chi o Dde Affrica. Mae gennym ni dŷ ar yr arfordir lle byddwn yn treulio'ch gaeaf chi (haf yma, dyna pam ein bod yn cael ein galw n wenoliaid!) I worked on the Lightning fighter aircraft for two years and I was lucky enough to fly the two-seater plane several times climbing to 40,000 feet and travelling faster than the speed of sound. Our factory was affected badly when Harold Wilson cancelled the TSR2 in 1965/6 and the outlook was bleak, even though I managed to retain my job despite the redundancies. I thought things might be better in the nuclear industry and I might get a chance to return to Wales (Wylfa or Trawsfynydd) so I got a job as a Health Physicist in Oldbury. After two years I d had enough of the monotonous work with no opportunity for any excitement! So I returned to Warton. After the Lightning came the Jaguar - shared between the UK and France so I spent a lot of time in Istres, by Marseilles. One highlight for me was going on board the aircraft carrier Clemencau to see the Jaguar being tested over the Channel. The Tornado came next, a project between Britain, Italy and Germany. I was designated responsibility for the first one, and I was the first engineer to fly one. I followed the progress of the aircraft from day one until it started being used by the British, German, Italian and Saudi Arabian Air Forces. David (Dei) Wyn Williams graduated in 1964 in Physics and Maths and embarked on a career as a Flight Test Engineer with English Electric in Warton, near Preston. My involvement in testing for 20 years came to an end when I was made a Project Manager and I travelled extensively selling the Tornado to Jordan and Malaysia. The next step was becoming responsible for British Aerospace customers in the Middle East and Africa. I travelled to Nigeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Angola, North Africa, and also Kuwait, Oman, Dubai and the UAE. South Africa emerged as a new market for fighter aircraft when Mandela became President. I first went there in it s an extremely interesting country since the abolition of Apartheid. In 1996 I became head of British Aerospace s Office in Pretoria and my wife came with me to live there. I retired in a good time after selling 24 Hawks and 28 Gripen to the South African Government. They will receive the first Hawk in 2005 and the first Gripen in Bob Gardner 27

The site is put together at the BBC's centre in Bryn Meirion, Bangor, and the producer is Bangor graduate Kath Evans. It's part of the Where I Live network of BBC regional websites and covers an area stretching from Abergele to Aberdaron and Anglesey to Aberdyfi. bbc website an ordinary bloke by Walter Hubbard, Fisheries Biology 1984 Walter Hubbard from Mexico was a postgraduate student in fisheries biology and management at Bangor in the 1980s. He still regards Wales as his second home. When I luckily got a grant from the British Council, I never thought it was going to be my pass to know and live the love of the common people. remember that song played by Paul Young which was an appealing way to get to know how ordinary British families lived?? Suddenly, Dr. Martens Shoes were not part of a fashion, but the real life. There's local news and sport, travel and weather information, plus sections on the natural world and outdoor activities, competitions, games and webcams. You can also have a go at a brainteaser created by Guillaume Thierry from the University's School of Psychology. But, says Kath: "The emphasis is definitely on user contributions to build up a picture of the area and its community life. This includes hundreds of great photos people have sent us, local history articles, personal stories, entertainment, town guides and listings of other useful websites for the region." Local celebrities and unsung heroes with a place in the Hall of Fame are as diverse as Lloyd George, Dawn French, Motorhead's Lemmy and Professor David Crystal. Almost every page on the website gives you the chance to comment or make a contribution in some way. A number of Bangor students and graduates have taken up the challenge and written about their university experiences - and their social life! "They range from David Bellis, whose time at Bangor was interrupted by World War II, to recent English and theatre studies graduate Ellie Trevitt who went on to gain a coveted place on a classical acting course," said Kath. "More contributions are always welcome." Kath Evans (née Moss) graduated in Philosophy in 1979 and then began a career in regional journalism at the North Wales Weekly News. She is married to fellow Bangor graduate Ieuan, who is an IT strategy manager. "It was the fantastic scenery and the closeness to the community which made me choose to study at Bangor in the first place," she said. "So I'm lucky that my job is all about sharing my enthusiasm for these things with other people from all over the world. "If you live in North West Wales or are visiting, we hope you'll find the website useful and entertaining. But if you've left Bangor, you can still indulge in a bit of nostalgia, share your memories of the place and even have desktop wallpaper to remind you what was like. Those who are young at heart but old in age, just like me, are going to eventually recapture the essence of those 1983/84 years with the help of that music played by the UK radio channels or seen on Top of the Pops on the telly Miles by The Pretenders was in the charts and that or even more, was the distance between our new home and the real one and certainly we were anxious to see the snow, but not ready to feel the loneliness in it. It took me a couple of years to understand how good the education received was, and the experience of being British, at least for a while. Bangor was the location assigned by my tutors and I still recall staring at that little cartoon on the Students Union wall saying: Here I am as a new student, thinking what others had thought before me about choosing Bangor. If only I have had better grades. Certainly that was a joke - but it made me shiver! Well, fortunately, Bangor was the perfect town, the people and the place were exactly what I did not know or expect. Only friendly people. There was racism but it was mainly against the English after a failed soccer match! It took me a while to understand the difference between England and Wales and what the UK really was; I certainly knew the geo-political difference, but not the historical one! Immediately I was part of the town, became a regular attendant at local pubs, the White Lyon, the Menai Arms, and the King s Head, arm in arm with the milkman, the postman, and the rest of the UB40 fans! I had the chance to return once, and took my wife and the kids. The eldest was surprised at how big my room was, but he loved what he saw and now we all expect he is big enough to return to that special and unique home. After Bangor I was mainly involved in teaching and research for a Mexican university working with shrimp, thus, I received a grant for technical training at University of Kagoshima, in Japan. I returned again to Mexico, worked as a Technician in several Shrimp Farms, deciding after four years to become a freelance consultant. I gained some experience in environmental impact analyses and risk analysis assessments, oriented to the shrimp farming and plant processing industry. (The scenic picture is an example of one of the wallpapers available on the site). Finally, after working and being close to the fishing industry, I now direct a project to develop scallop fishery, involving a hatchery, a multi site operation area, and a plant processing and exporting facility, where I believe, I m finally settled for good.

Dr Hussain Omed is an Iraqi Kurd who came to Bangor as a student in He fled the Iraqi dictator s grim regime and has never been able to return to his country since he left the Middle East to study at Bangor 25 years ago. Dr Omed s parents died of broken hearts soon after two of his brothers, aged 15 and 19, were killed. His other brother disappeared in 1996, and his body, believed to be in a mass grave, has never been found. Three of Dr Omed s cousins were also murdered by Saddam Hussein s regime. Dr Omed s wife, Waffa, 54, managed to join him in Wales a week after he arrived. They have three children, Sara, 25, Sherin, 24, and Ali, 19, who can all speak Welsh fluently. It has been a special pleasure in 2004 once again to welcome new faces as well as regulars at our meetings. A great success too was the London Bangorians first visit to a Prom in August to hear a concert with Christian Zacharias playing the piano and directing the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra. It is an honour and a privilege to receive a teaching fellowship and I am amazed and truly grateful to my colleagues and students for proposing me. Although Wales has become Dr Omed s home he naturally still feels some hiraeth or homesickness for his country. I enjoy walking and cycling and visit Llanberis in the heart of Snowdonia at least once a week. The mountains and lake remind me of Kurdistan. Editors Note: Hussain Omed has been instrumental in establishing the first formal links between Bangor and five universities in Iraq, including four in Kurdistan. He wishes to dedicate his story to the memory of his three brothers murdered by the Saddam Hussein regime and to Dr Tony Chamberlain, who not only supervised his PhD, but as always, went the extra mile in his support. I lost three brothers who were not at all political. I had been politically active and so was very lucky to come to Bangor when I did. Earlier in the year at the AGM we enjoyed a talk given with his usual panache by Bruce Walker entitled: Earthquakes, Embroidery and Porridge Spoons: Travels in India s Arid North Western Corner. The Summer outing was another memorable occasion, the sumptuousness of Waddesdon Manor being more than matched by the hospitality later provided by Eryl and Phillip Corbett at their home nearby in Oving. Many thanks! The London Bangorians have close links with St Benet, Paul s Wharf, EC4, the Metropolitan Welsh Church, (Sunday services at 11am and 3.30pm) and also with the University. It was therefore a special pleasure to welcome Rachel Davies to speak at our Autumn Meeting on the topic: Back to the Future, which could perhaps be described as perspectives on UCNW/UWB past, present and future. Among memorable archive material presented was a photograph of 1950s students outside the Agriculture Building. By a happy chance, two of those students were present in the audience! This was one of our best meetings. Diolch yn fawr, Rachel. I feel that I and my family have been made very welcome by everyone. His move to Hunting Surveys, Borehamwood resulted in his exposure to the international market place and he continued gathering the wealth of experience which he was always willing to share with others. He then took his leadership of the group to Space Technology Systems Ltd in Alton, Hants. Relishing a challenge he formed InstallOcean Ltd in 1989 in partnership with Roger Scrivens. Having acquired a 90% majority shareholding in the company in 1996 he subsequently sold the business to Fugro GEOS in At the time of his passing he was using his vast experience to great effect within the Sea Systems division at Fugro GEOS. All who knew Alan had tremendous respect for his calmness, generosity and straight forwardness. Alan Greig passed away on 25 August following a short but typically brave fight against cancer. Alan leaves a widow, Carole, children Nicky, Amy and Ross plus grandchildren Kellie, Lauran, Jessica and Olivia. He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched. Based on an obituary by Roger Scrivens, RS Aqua Ltd Iwan Humphreys Iwan was the first paid President of the Students Union ( ), to which he was elected after graduating in history. He then took up an administrative post at the University of Sussex, also gaining an MA in history at Swansea researching the political history of his home city Cardiff in the 19th century. He then joined the Welsh Office in London, first as Press/PR Officer, writing speeches for the Minister. Transferring to Cardiff, he developed an interest in law while working on the Development Board for Rural Wales Bill. He started an external law degree with the University of London, duly qualified and left the Welsh Office to undertake Articles with a Manchester local authority, staying with them for a further three years. He then secured a post in Cardiff as a lawyer firstly for South Glamorgan County Council and then the Cardiff Bay Development Corporation, working on the Cardiff Bay Barrage Bills. After a brief spell of work in the private sector, Iwan worked for a local authority near Cardiff, but this had to be abandoned when he suffered a stroke in February For short periods since then he worked part time from home as a lawyer/translator for the Welsh Office and new Welsh Assembly. He also commenced an external LLM in European law and kept busy following current affairs, reviving old friendships and developing a model railway. He continued to fight for the interests of Wales and the Welsh language on all occasions. Iwan had always pursued an active life, particularly enjoying hill-walking and cycling. Even when confined to a wheel-chair, he undertook adventurous holidays with his wife Maggie to Alaska, USA, Russia, Scandinavia and the Mediterranean. Iwan was a regular attendee at reunions and although unwell at the time, was able to attend the History Reunion in July 2004, where he was thrilled to visit the Council Chamber and Arts Library once again. Iwan will be greatly missed by all who knew him at Bangor. Bryn Lloyd Jones Yn ystod mis Tachwedd collwyd un o ddinasyddion amlwg Bangor, sef Mr Bryn Lloyd Jones. Hanai o Langwm a chafodd ei addysgu yn Ysgol Ramadeg Llangollen. Bu am gyfnod o 1942 i 1946 yn hyfforddi peilotiaid yn Oklahoma yn yr Unol Daleithiau, yn arbennig gydag awyrennau bomio r Lancasters. Yna daeth i r Brifysgol ym Mangor a graddio mewn Hanes. Yma y cyfarfu â Megan, a fe briododd y ddau yn 1950 a chartrefu ym Mlaenau Ffestiniog wedi penodiad Bryn yn athro Hanes ac Ymarfer Corff yn Ysgol y Moelwyn. Yno y ganed y ddau fab, Gwyn sy n athro yng Nghlwyd a Gareth sy n Feddyg yng Nghwm Gwendraeth. Wedi cyfnod byr fel Swyddog Addysg Bellach yn Preston fe i penodwyd yn ddarlithydd hanes yn y Normal.Yn ystod ei gyfnod bu n allweddol yn sefydlu astudiaethau Hyfforddiant Mewn Swydd i athrawon Clwyd a Gwynedd gan drefnu cyrsiau i athrawon gradd a thystysgrif. Ymddeolodd o r Normal yn 1982, a bu wedyn am flynyddoedd yn cyflawni dyletswyddau tebyg yn Adran Addysg y Brifysgol. Roedd ei gyfraniad i fywyd y Colegau yma ym Mhangor yn sylweddol. Pan benderfynwyd sefydlu Cymdeithas Cynaeolodau staff y Normal, ef a etholwyd yn Ysgrifennydd cyntaf. Yn wir cyn ei waeledd olaf yr oedd newydd drefnu taith i r Gymdeithas ar reilffordd Eryri, yr union reilffordd a red bellach o fewn ychydig gamau i fan ei fedd yn Betws Garmon. Pan fu farw, ef oedd Cadeirydd Cymdeithas Cynaeolodau staff y Normal, ac ef hefyd oedd Llywydd Cymdeithas Cynfyfyrwyr lleol y Brifysgol. Ar wahân i w ddyletswyddau Colegol darlithiai yn aml i dramorwyr a ddeuai ar ymweliadau diwylliannol â Bangor, yn arbennig Americanwyr, a u tywys ar deithiau hanes a llén yng Ngwynedd. Yr oedd yn ddarlithydd egnïol, yn fyrlymus ei barabl. Bu n ddiacon ffyddlon yn ei eglwys ym Mhendref ar hyd ei fywyd ym Mangor, ac fe welir bwlch mawr ar ei ôl yn yr oedfaon ac mewn gwahaonol weithgareddau. Estynnwn bob cydymdeimlad i Megan a r teulu. Bryn Lloyd Jones, former student, lecturer, Chair of the former Normal College Association of Lecturers and President of the local Old Students Association. Jack Revell John Robert Stephen Revell was born in Tunbridge Wells. In 1957 he was appointed Research Officer in the Department of Applied Economics at Cambridge, later becoming Tutor and Fellow at Fitzwilliam College. From 1963 to 1966 he studied the financial implications of growth in the British economy and published his findings in 1967 as The Wealth of the Nation. Professor Revell took up the Chair of Economics at Bangor in He set up the Institute of European Finance, which became recognised internationally for its research and in 1982 Revell established the Wolpertinger Club, a European association of researchers with an interest in the industrial economics of banking. Revell had strong socialist principles. In the last decade of his career, he wrote on savings banks and cooperative models of banking. In countries like Spain, Italy, France and Germany he became something of a modern-day guru. His fundamental approaches characterise the new global Basel 2 standards for banking supervision and capital adequacy that will become operational in 2007; Revell first explored and emphasized these areas in his research and writings over 30 years ago. Jack Revell s research dealt with a world less elegant and precise than that often inhabited by modern economic theory, but his informed commentaries were read by a wide audience. He died on 4 November Khalid Salah Professor Khalid Salah received his MSc in Electronic Engineering from Bangor in 1980 and was awarded his PhD in Electrical Engineering from California University (Davis) in Having turned down a lucrative job offer in Silicon Valley, the family returned to Nablus in Professor Salah wanted to teach in his home town and help those who did not have the educational opportunities that he had experienced. Despite the curfews and constant military action in Nablus during the last 15 years, he managed to stimulate young minds with his love of science and more importantly, his love of peace. Professor Salah was a member of the Palestine- Israeli Peace Association at Al Najah University, where he was a Professor of Computer Engineering. He was a United States permanent resident and the family planned to eventually return there. Professor Khalid Salah and his son Muhammad were killed by Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in their home on the 5 July Margaret Sharratt (neé Gee) Margaret Gee, later Mrs Margaret Sharratt, a student from died on 27 November She suffered extremely bad health but despite this, rallied bravely after the death of her husband George in March Her death was to her, a reunification with her husband of 55 years. She was deeply loved and is still deeply missed by her children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. John Tame John Tame died on the 18 August at just 57 years of age after a serious illness. He first came to Bangor in 1972 from his native Wiltshire, joining the School of Electronic Engineering. John s colleagues claim that his contribution to the development of the microfabrication facilities in the School of Informatics was enormous, and the key to major grant capture successes in labon-a-chip technology, laser micromachining and polymer electronics. Its origins could be traced back some 25 years ago when John was casually asked if he could use his photolithography expertise to make microelectronic devices that could operate in salty water without any protective coatings. His response was typical: We usually keep our electronic devices away from water, Ron, but I ll give it a try. John went on to perfect methods for producing the first prototypes for separating cancer cells from healthy cells and live bacteria from dead ones using radio frequency signals. Several other laboratories around the world attempted to copy the microelectrode arrays he had perfected - without success. Sadly John is not able to take his rightful place running the new world-class Clean Room and associated fabrication facilities that he was instrumental in designing and procuring. That such a facility is available in the School of Informatics is a fitting memorial to John s highly valuable contribution. John was a very talented and dedicated musician and found his spiritual home with Llanrug Brass Band. The biggest loss, however, will be felt by John s family: wife Kath, daughter and son Jo and Kevin and their partners. Based on an obituary provided by Aled Griffiths, Albert Rees, Ron Pethig and Martin Taylor. John Anthony Wallwork Professor John Anthony Wallwork was raised in Manchester and attended the University College of North Wales. In 1954 he moved to the University of Michigan to study for his doctorate, and acquired a lifelong interest in mites. Over the next 35 years his work helped to found the science of ecophysiology and Wallwork also made an important contribution to polar science, as an adviser to the British Antarctic Survey and as a pioneer of the taxonomic description of mites from the Antarctic continent and islands, as well as from arid deserts. Between 1957 and his retirement in 1988 he published over 80 papers and 10 books, including seminal works on the vital roles of soil animals and the principles of desert biology. Away from his microscope, he was an inspirational teacher. His books included a series of practical texts on vertebrate and invertebrate zoology, aimed at students in developing countries, where the greater part of the world s remaining biodiversity resides. He was a strong supervisor of research students, and most of the world s current acarologists will acknowledge him both as a mentor and a friend. He was Professor of Zoology at Queen Mary, University of London from 1983 to He died on March 4, 2004, aged 71. Gerry White It was with great sadness that we at Bangor learned of the death of Gerry White after his struggle with Leukaemia. Gerry was a scouse ; having worked with the Plessey Company in Liverpool he came to Bangor with a HND: the School of Electronic Engineering was happy to accept such qualifications and Gerry s subsequent successes proved his ability. He went on to Bell Telephone Labs in the U.S.A. before returning after some years to join the B.T. laboratories at Martlesham, Suffolk, where he made a significant contribution to the design of the all-digital Monarch PB, becoming eventually General Manager, Research. Gerry rarely spoke of his successes: very few of us were aware, for instance, that he had been awarded the Freedom of the City of London for his work. He was made an Honorary Fellow of the University of Wales, Bangor, in 1992, and also appointed Honorary Professor. Latterly he had developed his interest in the University and had become Chair of the Bangor University Foundation. We valued his direct approach, analytical mind and sense of humour. The University meant a great deal to him and he to us: we shall miss him. John Lasarus Williams Bu John Lasarus Williams yn Gynghorydd ar Gyngor Gwynedd ac ar un adeg ef oedd ymgeisydd seneddol Plaid Cymru ar Ynys Môn. Yn enedigol o Langoed, fe i hadwaenid fel John L, a hyd ei ymddeoliad bu n uwch ddarlithydd yn y Gymraeg yn y cyn Goleg Normal. Cafodd ei addysg yn Ysgol Ramadeg Biwmares a graddiodd o Brifysgol Bangor. Bu n aelod o Gyngor Gwynedd pan oedd y cyngor hwnnw n cynnwys Ynys Môn hefyd. I gydnabod ei wasanaeth i lywodraeth leol, yn arbennig ym meysydd addysg a chyllid, fe i gwnaed yn henadur anrhydeddus Ynys Môn. Bu n ymwneud â r Blaid Lafur a Phlaid Cymru yn ystod ei gyfnod fel myfyriwr yng Ngholeg Prifysgol Gogledd Cymru dywedodd Williams ei fod yn gweld rhagoriaethau yn y ddwy blaid ond iddo ddewis aros y tu allan i wleidyddiaeth plaid er mwyn bod yn wrthrychol fel newyddiadurwr. Mae ei hunangofiant, Yr Eiddoch yn Gywir, a gyhoeddwyd yn 1990, nid yn gymaint yn ddisgrifiad o i fywyd ond yn ymdriniaeth gyfareddol â r cyfryngau yng Nghymru, yn brintiedig ac electronig, dros gyfnod hanner canrif ei oes waith. Bu n ymwneud hefyd â grŵp o newyddiadurwyr iau a oedd yn edrych ar y posibilrwydd o gyhoeddi papur dyddiol Cymraeg. Bwriedir lansio hwn y flwyddyn nesaf fel Y Byd.
