2 HEDD WYN: THE LOST WAR POET Saturday, August 5 BBC Two Wales, 9pm Silence fell over the 1917 National Eisteddfod audience as the pseudonym Fleur-de-Lis was called out as the winner of the prestigious bardic chair, but the victor couldn t be there to collect his award. Instead, the chair was draped in black and a nation went into mourning for the people s poet, Hedd Wyn, who had been killed in action in World War I just a few weeks earlier. National Poet of Wales, Ifor ap Glyn, tells the tragic story of this lost Welsh poet and the remarkable reaction to his death in Hedd Wyn: The Lost War Poet. Yr Ysgwrn, Hedd Wyn s home in Trawsfynydd, is being relaunched as a major tourist attraction in north Wales, but it began welcoming visitors even before the end of the war. The house stands as a time capsule of 1917 and Hedd Wyn s nephew, Gerald Williams, is the last of the family line to live there, opening the doors to the many visitors and recounting Hedd Wyn s story. A bachelor in his late eighties, Gerald recently took the decision to sell Yr Ysgwrn to the Snowdonia National Park. With help from a 3 million grant, National Park employee Naomi Jones leads a team refurbishing the almost untouched home of Hedd Wyn to protect his legacy for future generations. Gwawr Jones 2

3 THE BUG GRUB COUPLE Monday, August 7 BBC One, 7.30pm #BugGrub Insect expert Dr Sarah Beynon and her partner, award-winning chef Andy Holcroft, are encouraging the nation to eat a different type of food - with bugs in it. As the demand for sustainable high protein food increases, insects could just be the answer. Sarah and Andy own Bug Farm outside St Davids in Pembrokeshire - it s a bug zoo, a gallery, and a research centre. Across the farmyard, chef Andy offers an interesting double menu with a choice of normal food next to insect versions. It s beef burgers or bug burgers at the Grub restaurant. Bugs use up very little water and can eat waste products, while cows need feed from edible arable crops. The trouble is, people like eating beef, so the challenge is to change people s perceptions of bugs from creepy crawlies to edible, sustainable and tasty food. As their restaurant is too small to bake on a commercial scale, Sarah and Andy go to the Food Centre near Llandysul to make a large batch of cricket cookies to take to the Hay Festival. 4 CARDIFF BAY LIVES Friday, August 11 BBC One Wales, 7.30pm #CardiffBayLives Cardiff Bay Lives follows the people who live, work and socialise in the capital s playground that s home to the Senedd, the Wales Millennium Centre and a wide variety of bars and restaurants. On the waterfront are boat owners and the bay s biggest rivals, Ben and Chris. They both run pleasure trips around the bay and offer the same route at the same price - so every day is a competition. Come rain or shine, it s their job to make a profit, so they re trying everything to get those customers in. Integral to the Butetown area is the community centre that s home to the very lively dominoes club. Forde, Franklyn and Tony are busy preparing a West Indian banquet for the annual dominoes competition against rivals Coventry, but who will take home the title? Seb and Lucasz moved to Cardiff from Poland over 11 years ago and together they own a florist s shop and café in the heart of one of the oldest areas of the Bay. This week, BBC Wales focus will be on the National Eisteddfod of Wales from Anglesey, with extended coverage on television, radio and online. Iwan Griffiths will have highlights of the day in Mwy o r Maes, apart from Wednesday and Friday when there will be full coverage of the competing live from the stage in the pavilion. Nia Roberts, Dewi Llwyd, Steffan Messenger and Heledd Cynwal will have daily live coverage in Rhaglen y Dydd, presenting the competing from the Pavilion as well as giving a taste of the variety of events and other attractions on the field. On BBC Radio Cymru, Hywel Gwynfryn and Rhiannon Lewis familiar voices will be in charge of the live broadcasting from the main stage, with Ifan Evans roaming the field and Nia Lloyd Jones bringing us all the hustle and bustle backstage. Post Cyntaf and Rhaglen Aled Hughes will be also there, and there will also be discussion and debate about the hot topics on Taro r Post at 1pm with Garry Owen. There will be literary highlights in Y Babell Lên at 7.30pm with Post Prynhawn following the main stage broadcast at 5.30pm, and Tocyn Wythnos with Beti George will give the whole flavor of the festival every night from 6.15pm. At 9pm on Wednesday to Friday, Lisa Gwilym will be with Magi Dodd, Huw Stephens and Elen Pencwm to take us through some of the musical events of the festival. The Eisteddfod will also be part of BBC Radio Wales week, with Elen Ifan bringing a daily dose of the festival to listeners, and Good Evening Wales will be live from the festival on Wednesday. On the BBC Cymru Fyw website there will be a live video coverage from the pavilion all day, including simultaneous translation in English. In addition, there will be results and video highlights of the competing in the pavilion, news updates from the festival and daily photo galleries.
