9 HORSFORD PAST AND PRESENT Outside the village are the remains of Horsford Castle, a motte and bailey castle built in Norman times but subsequently abandoned about 300 years later. The remnants are a Scheduled Monument. The village is also home to the remains of a mill constructed in the 1860s. The village expanded greatly after the Second World War and today is a popular place to live, with a population of around 4,000, combining good connectivity and excellent amenities with a delightful semi-rural setting.

10 LOCAL TO YOU Horsford has a range of shops and amenities along Holt Road, the main street that leads through thevillageincludingtwopubs,amedicalcentre, several takeaways, convenience store, a hair and beauty salon and garage. Horsford has a six-day-a-week bus service, with the No. 45 linking the market town of Holt to Norwich city centre, with a journey time of around 20 minutes to the Anglia Square Shopping Centre.

11 HORSFORD S UNIQUELY CHARMING COMMUNITY One of the most appealing aspects of villages such as Horsford, which draws people to make their lives there, is the sense of community that exists in many of them. Horsford is no exception, with a thriving community and plenty to do for residents of all ages. The village s church and village hall are two centres for events. Youngsters will particularly enjoy the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts groups that take place at Bramley Lakes, or perhaps to join the Youth Football Club which has teams for boys and girls from under six years of age to 15, while older villagers might prefer the more sedate pleasures of the Bowls Club.

12 EXPERIENCE THE OUTDOORS Norfolk is the perfect place to live for anyone who enjoys the outdoor life and from Horsford, the countryside is right on your doorstep, with many nationally recognised areas of natural beauty all within an easy drive. You can be at the heart of the Broads within half an hour, enjoying the beaches and nature reserves on the North Norfolk Heritage Coast within 45 minutes and be walking through the woodland of Thetford Forest in under an hour. Norfolk s long coastline hosts a number of traditional seaside resorts and harbour towns, such as Hunstanton, Sheringham, Cromer, Caister-on-Sea and Great Yarmouth.

13 FABULOUS SHOPS AND RESTAURANTS Horsford has a good range of shops for everyday needs and a variety of places to eat. There is a butcher, bakery, convenience store and newsagent as well as a hair salon and garage. All your favourite takeaways are on hand too, from Indian and Chinese food to pizzas and fried chicken, or why not treat yourself to a meal and a drink at one of Horsford s two pubs, the Dog Inn and the Horsford Brickmakers? For the main weekly shop, you can head for the nearest major supermarkets which are in Drayton and Costessey and for some thorough retail therapy, Norwich has three large malls, The Mall, the Anglia Square Shopping Centre and intu Chapelfield, in addition to its thriving city centre shops and a famous open-air market that is open six days a week.

14 ACTIVITY AND AMUSEMENT Outdoor pursuits such as hiking, running, cycling and horse riding are, unsurprisingly for such a rural area, popular pastimes. The local football and cricket clubs operate numerous teams, with an emphasis on youth for football and squads for junior and senior players in cricket. Bowls is the other organised sport available within the village. Horsford is not far away from the coast, so you and the family can be paddling and making sandcastles within an hour of leaving home at Butterfly Mill. For a really comprehensive range of leisure amenities and things to do, just head a few miles south by bus or car to Norwich, which has plenty of options for fans of theatre, film, comedy, live music and sport. The city hosts a large number of annual events including food and drink festivals, book and antique fairs, heritage days and family days out.

15 OUTSTANDING LOCAL SCHOOLS Horsford has two schools for younger pupils Horsford Church of England Infant School and Horsford Church of England Junior School. Neighbouring village Horsham St Faith also has a primary school. Norwich and the surrounding villages have a number of convenient and highly regarded schools, among which are Taverham High School and Notre Dame High School in the state sector ( Good and Outstanding respectively, according to Ofsted) and Norwich School and Norwich High School for Girls in the private sector. The University of East Anglia is based in Norwich, with a worldwide reputation for excellence and around 15,000 students studying a wide range of subjects across its extensive campus.

16 THE BEST OF NORFOLK Norfolk is still a largely rural county distinguished by its vast agricultural landscape and big skies. Though it is now a large village, Horsford is still surrounded by fields and farmland, yet it is well connected and within easy reach of all of Norfolk s most cherished scenic areas and modern amenities. The city of Norwich is a shoppers paradise and offers a fabulous array of restaurants, bars and nightspots, a host of arts venues, heritage sites and a number of sports venues, including Carrow Road, the home of Norwich City Football Club. King s Lynn s market charter was granted in 1101 and it remains an important commercial centre in the county. In the Middle Ages, it was one of Britain s major ports. Now, it has an impressive array of amenities and is undergoing a long-term regeneration programme. Thetford was a significant settlement of the region in the age of Boudica, the Celtic queen who took on the Romans. This attractive market town was also where the TV series Dad s Army was filmed on location, and a statue of lead character Captain Mainwaring was unveiled there in To the west of the town is the 47,000-acre Thetford Forest Park, a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

17 COMMUTER S PARADISE Horsford is well connected to Norwich, East Anglia and beyond with road links to the city centre and important towns such as Great Yarmouth, King s Lynn and Ipswich. From Norwich railway station there are regular services to the rest of Norfolk, Cambridge, Peterborough, Ipswich and London. There s a regular bus service from the village into the city and a park-and-ride scheme from Norwich International Airport. The airport offers regular scheduled routes to Holland, the Channel Islands and a number of UK destinations.
