Ergonomics is about designing the workplace and workplace equipment so that it optimizes range of movement and doesn t place strain on the worker through repetition of movements. Strain causes damage, fatigue and contributes to the employee not being able to perform properly. What s involved in an assessment? Trained observation of even the most seemingly minor details from how a chair s positioned relative to a computer, to lighting conditions and even clutter around the workplace. Basically it looks at the person and their working environment, considering their posture and individual limitations. The aim is to recognize potential risk factors for the individual using the workstation and provide them with strategies to maximize their ergonomic workstation and minimize risk of injury. In this way there is improvement in productivity, quality, safety and worker comfort. Improved performance at work will result in higher worker satisfaction and higher profitability for your company. Following an ergonomic assessment there s usually recommendations made to the employee about their posture and their workstation. The employer s notified if there s requirement for any pieces of equipment.
