14 photo: Ken McCown photo: Ryan Taube McCormick Tribune Campus Center South State Street 3201 Chicago California United States Occupying a spot directly beneath an elevated train track, The McCormick Campus Center is the first building designed by Rem Koolhaas in the United States In order to muffle the noisy trains above, Koolhaas actually designed two distinct buildings that are structurally separated from each other The train is surrounded by an "acoustically isolating stainless steel tube" The Campus Center beneath is entered through a 20 foot high glass portrait of Mies van der Rohe, who established himself at IIT after the closure of the Bauhaus in 1933 It houses a number of services that were previously spread out across the campus, including a bookstore, auditorium, coffee bar, post office, and convenience store The formal layout for the building was inspired by tracking the movements of the students as they crossed under the train tracks, making their way between the residence halls and the classrooms The interior corridors follow these original paths with the services filling in between photo: Ryan Taube m² Illinois Institue of Technology rtaube 14

15 photo: Ryan Taube Prada Beverly Hills N Rodeo Drive 343 Beverly Hills California United States The design for this Prada store is unique among the shops of Rodeo Drive in that it does not have the traditional storefront enclosure of glass and mannequins Instead, the entire wall facing the street drops into the basement to give maximum entry, most of which is a grand staircase ascending to the second floor A curtain of air at the entry keeps the air temperature at a reasonable level The inner walls of the second level are lined with porous green resin devloped specifically for the store About 4 inches thick, this wall was constructed by pouring resin into panels filled with wax balls After the resin had dried, the wax was melted away to create the porous look The store also boasts some technological innovations such as cameras and an LCD screen in the changing rooms, allowing the customer to see themselves from all angles photo: Ryan Taube m² Prada rtaube Monday - saturday / Sunday From the 405 Freeway, exit at Santa Monica Boulevard and head east Turn right onto Rodeo drive There is some street parking and there are plenty of parking garages 15

18 photo: Jeroen Meijer photo: Jeroen Meijer Video Bus Stop Emmaplein Groningen Netherlands The Video Bus Stop is an asymmetrical composition of glass, marble and corrugated steel, that protects the commuters with a red velvet curtain 'against the elements', which provides a stark contrast with the constant circulation of buses The shelter's asymmetrical orientation aims at amplifying the effect of two identical objects facing each other The use of real marble on the wall creates an impossible dignified abris - like Mies van der Rohe meets Decaux The only sign of 'vulgarity' are the different video programmes projected on the marble surface with 3D metal letters on the outside Discreet holes on the sides of the marble walls provide for discreet sound The project was part of the exhibition 'What A wonderful World' that took place in Groningen in 1991 (text from architect's website) 1989 jpmm photo: Jeroen Meijer By bus, or a five minute walk from the station 18
