2 Market Hall Westnieuwland 3011 Rotterdam Market Hall is the first covered food market of the, drawing inspiration from food markets in Stockholm, Barcelona and Valencia The roof of Market Hall is an arch accommodating 228 apartments The combination of an apartment building covering a fresh food market with food shops, restaurants, a supermarket and an underground parking is a new typology and a world premiere for Rotterdam The large mural which covers the interior of the arch, The Horn of Plenty by artists Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam, has a surface of 11000m2 making it the largest artwork of the The artwork evokes the illusion of laying on your back in a meadow, looking up, right through Markthal towards the sky The sun in the centre figures as Horn of Plenty from which the fresh produce falls down to earth The design vision of MVRDV describes Market Hall as urbanism, the function mix is an integrated design, a 24 hour building which is a public and lasting addition to the city of Rotterdam m² Artist Associate architect Artist Contractor Contractor Acoustics consultant Developer Contractor Sustainability consultant Arno Coenen INBO Iris Roskam JP van Eesteren Martens en Van Oord Peutz Consulting Engineers & Associes Provast Royal Haskoning Techniplan MI_MOA Markthal is open seven days a week, Mondays to Saturdays from 10:00 till 20:00, and Sundays from 12:00 till 18:00, with extended opening times for the restaurants The underground parking Markthal is open 24/7 Market Hall is located between the Binnenrotte square, Hoogstraat and Blaak, next to Blaak station (subway and train) and with direct connections to Rotterdam Central Station 2

3 De Rotterdam Wilhelminakade AR Rotterdam De Rotterdam is conceived as a vertical city: three interconnected mixed-use towers accommodating offices, apartments, a hotel, conference facilities, shops, restaurants, and cafes The project began in 1997 Construction started at the end of 2009, with completion in 2013 The towers are part of the ongoing redevelopment of the old harbour district of Wilhelminapier, next to the Erasmus Bridge, and aim to reinstate the vibrant urban activity - trade, transport, leisure - once familiar to the neighbourhood De Rotterdam is named after one of the ships on the Holland America Line, which departed from the Wilhelminapier in decades past, carrying thousands of Europeans emigrating to the US m² OMA - Rem Koolhaas De Rotterdam CV, The Hague stefdg The lobby, atrium and nhow hotel amongst others are open to the public An espresso bar with barista is located in the lobby Visiting non-public areas of the building is possible with De Rotterdam Tours: 3

4 photo: Renee Willeman photo: Renee Willeman Schouwburgplein Schouwburgplein CL Rotterdam In the 1980 s this area was once viewed as a problem area a large empty place without character The new square now is an urban stage, interactive and changing, with the skyline as its décor The Schouwburgplein is situated in the heart of the city and is surrounded by shops and flanked by the City Theatre and the City Concert Hall The space is furnitured with 15 meter high ventilation towers from the underground parking and four hydraulic lighting elements Their configuration can be interactively altered by the inhabitants of the city The layout of the square is based on the expected use at different times of the day and its relationship to the sun These sunlight-zones are reflected in the mosaic of the different materials used on the floorthe whole square is lifted 35 cm from ground level to enhance the stage-effect photo: Felix Kalkman 1997 Landscape architect West 8 City of Rotterdam NGHM 24/7 The schouwburg square is about 5 min walking from the Central Train station, or take tram 1, 4, 5, 7, 8, 20, 23 and get off at the Kruisplein It's around the corner 4

8 photo: Olivier van den Hoven photo: Naomi Schiphorst Cube Housing Overblaak MH Rotterdam The cube house (pole- or tree house) is designed as an abstract tree, the total complex (Blaak Heights) a wood (village) The village is like a safe oasis where several functions could take place: small-scale business, shops, school and a children s playground downstairs (promenade level) and living in the cube houses upstairs The strong interaction between the private (upstairs) and the public is characteristic for this situation The inhabitant has a great view because of the sloping windows The complex is in fact a pedestrian bridge, crossing a traffic artery This was an idea of the municipality at the time Piet Blom was asked to furnish this bridge The cube house could be called an architectonic experiment, in which Blom has considered form, aesthetics and spatial effects of greater importance than functionality and practical purpose Living in a cube (the top) reminds of a tree house which is accessible through the pole (the trunk) An archetypical way of living really photo: Dirk Verwoerd m² Piet Blom City of Rotterdam olivier_van_den_hoven The show-cube at number 70 is open daily, from 11:00-17:00 h Entrance: 2 euro For more information see the website wwwkubuswoningnl Take the Subway or train to Station Blaak Or tram
