2 photo: H Werlemann photo: Michael Buschor Dance Theater Schedeldoekshaven EN Den Haag The Dance Theatre, completed in 1987, was originally conceived in 1980 as an extension to a circus theatre in Scheveningen, the seaside of The Hague In 1984, the design was adapted to a new site - the Spui Complex - in the centre At that time this new context was undergoing substantial change Now the Dance Theatre shares the Spui Complex with a concert hall (van Mourik, architect), the town hall (white building by Richard Meier) and a hotel designed by Carel Weeber (also the planner of the complex) What would have been a flamboyant exterior reflecting the holiday vernacular of Scheveningen, became, in the city centre, a humble building (with the exception of the billboard/mural), which almost disappears between its extroverted neighbors Although there was minimal collaboration between OMA and the architects of the concert hall, the buildings physical proximity generated a shared foyer - a 7 m wide alley between the two buildings photo: Pan Sok & Jaap Ruurs Fotografie Project is public! 1987 OMA - Rem Koolhaas Dance Theater MI_MOA Depending on the programe, so check the website of the Dance Theater, wwwndtnl Car: from the Prins Clausplein follow the signs Den Haag Centrum Take the third exit Centrum Go left at the traffic-lights and pass the Prins Bernard-Viaduct The theater is in front of you on the right Parking: in one of the three car parks directly beneath the theatre Public transport: from both train stations it s 10 min walking to Het Spui square in front of the theater By tram: 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 10, 16 & 17 or bus 4, 5, 18, 22, 25 & 30 Stop called Spuiplein 2

3 photo: Naomi Schiphorst City Hall & Central Library Spui BT Den Haag In the heart of the 12 storey complex is the 50m high internal atrium: one of the largest indoor public spaces in Europe known as the Citizens Hall All local municipal offices, central and public desk-facilities are grouped around the atrium The elements of this mega-facility are combined with a semi-independent rental office building at its north-eastern end and extensive shopping frontage throughout the ground floor The central library has its own entrance and is located at the extreme northwestern corner, where its dynamic form imparts a strong character to the principal plaza Inside and out, the structure is clad in white, porcelain-enamelled metal panels, measuring 85 by 180 cm Subsequently, the whole building is set up by a multiple of 45 cm The glass roof of the atrium is supported by free-spanning laminated timber trusses incorporating sunscreens, maintenance walkways, and light fixtures The inhabitants of The Hague have nicknamed it: the ice-palace Project is public! 4 photo: Archipelontwerpers De Baljurk Kettingstraat 2511 AM Den Haag Archipelontwerpers produced a design for the renovation of 8 shops in the historical centre of The Hague The street where they stand formed an exception in the otherwise beautifully refurbished city centre: the dilapidated dwellings above the shops stood empty and many of the buildings were boarded up; the public space was neglected The client, property developer Geste, wanted to build something that would give the neighbourhood a boost The façades of the buildings were restored and behind them new dwellings were built, accessed from a raised terrace Below ground level is a large retail space with a flexible floor plan The 8th, corner building has a new glass curtain wall draped in a golden steel mesh that lends the whole project an exclusive air Attention-getting was not the only reason for choosing a sculptural form - it also alludes to the formal idiom of the Art Nouveau architecture in the immediate vicinity and to the sinuous course of the stream that once flowed here Public access unknown! 2005 Archipelontwerpers Geste groep Kirsten_Hannema photo: Archipelontwerpers Located on the corner of Kettingstraat and Achterom in The Hague's city centre 4

5 Housing Schilderswijk West Suze Robertsonstraat WS Den Haag Siza designed two housing blocks with 106 dwellings in the 'social housing' sector The one building has 5 corners and the other 3 The houses in the 4-layer high building have a so called portiekontsluiting, which means, the entrance is facilitated with a stair, accessible from the street The red bricks have a rhythmic pattern of large square windows On the corners, several white smooth surfaces are made In a second phase was realized, with 238 houses on the Doedijnstraat and surroundings Project is not public! 6 photo: Rudy Uytenhaak enbureau photo: Rudy Uytenhaak enbureau La Fenetre Prins Bernhardviaduct BH Den Haag This apartment building stands on an extremely small plot between The Hague Central Station, the Dutch Royal Libray's Archive building and the Prince Bernardviaduct The building stands on high legs above an busy public route, which connects on the viaduct and central station This frees up the area below and offers space for the main entrance, health centre, storage rooms and car park The plan of the tower has the form of a trapeze: wide towards the west and narrow towards the east The tower houses 115 luxury apartments, of approximately 120 sqr meters, with a grand view over The Hague The façade is wholy cladded with glass in steps of about 10 centimetres on the exterior to ensure a striking composition that gives the building a slight crystalline impact photo: Rudy Uytenhaak enbureau Project is not public! 7 photo: Zwarts & Jansma architects photo: Bjorn Utpott Randstadrail station Prinses Beatrixlaan 2595 Den Haag Randstadrail is a project for a new light urban rail network between The Hague and Rotterdam and runs partly over existing tram and railway tracks This new viaduct is built over the entire length of the Beatrixlaan, with a new station halfway The space-frame tubular construction follows the curve that Joan Busquets has set out for the alignments and the roadways on the Beatrixlaan For a length of 400 m the viaduct is constructed from a skeleton structure of rings of mild-steel strips with a diameter of about 10 m, interconnected by diagonally set tubes to form an open tube structure The relatively great structural height of the tube makes it easy to cover the large spans The construction will be supported by V-shaped columns and provides room for two tracks for passing trains Thanks to the big spans of 40 and 50 m there are relatively few columns at street level There is also hardly any visual obstruction at eye level, so that social safety and traffic safety are not compromised Project is public! 2006 Contractor Zwarts & Jansma s BAM Wilma bv Stadsgewest Haaglanden Bjorn_Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott Tram lines 3 and 4 cross the viaduct and stop at the tram station The viaduct is within walking distance from the Central Train Station of Den Haag 7

8 photo: Peter de Ruig photo: Peter de Ruig Flat-Iron Housing Rijswijkseplein LR Den Haag On this incredibly small plot - just 30 by 35 metres - a 130 metre-high residential tower block, the highest in The Hague is built Het Strijkijzer (the flat-iron) has 351 housing units: three hundred studios for young people and 51 luxury rental apartments The building has a number of sun lounges, two separate entrances and a total of five lifts, a trendy Grand Café, a launderette and workspaces And a special glass panorama lift that goes straight to the terrace on the 41st floor After the top of the building was finished, soon the building started whistling in the wind The crown of the flat-iron had to be altered to find a solution to the noise A logbook was kept, of the days and times the building started whistling, and what the wind speed and directions were With sound recordings the frequency spectrum was researched By means of the specifications of the building and the outcome of the research, a fitting solution will be applied Project is not public! 9 photo: Norbert van Onna Castalia Parnassusplein VX Den Haag 'Castalia' in The Hague houses the headquarters for The Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sport in the It is one component of a master plan called 'De Resident', a mixed-use development of office buildings and housing that includes both new construction and renovation The 29215m2 project for the Ministry involved re-cladding a 1950's building of jack-slab construction, replacing the building core, and adding two annexes along Zwarteweg, one forming a gate to a new courtyard and the other completing the street façade between Castalia and Zurich Tower The planar wall surfaces, fenestration patern, and new peaked roofs of the 'twin towers' recall the character of traditional Dutch architecture and establish Castalia as a landmark in the city (text from architect's website) The building is nicknamed 'the Tits' of Den Haag, for it's distinct form with two protruding rooftops Project is public!
