2 Seattle Central Library 4th Ave 1000 Seattle Washington Seattle's new library was designed to be a vast "Living Room" for all Seattleites It's twisted form was derived from both a continuous spiral of book stacks, as well as an attempt to maximize space within the strict height and setback restrictions As Koolhaas states, "the ambition is to redefine and reinvent the Library as an institution no longer exclusively dedicated to the book, but as an information store, where all media 'new and old' are presented under a regime of new equalities" m² Supplier OMA - Rem Koolhaas LMN s Lensvelt M-Th: 10:00am - 8:00pm F-Sa: 10:00am - 6:00pm Su: 12:00pm - 6:00pm Driving from the north (going south) via Interstate-5: * Take I-5 exit 165B at Union Street * Follow Union three blocks west to Fifth Avenue * Turn left on Fifth and go south three blocks to Spring Street Driving from the south (going north) via I-5: * Take I-5 exit 165 at Seneca Street * Follow Seneca Street one block west * Turn left on Fifth Avenue and go south one block to Spring Street 2

3 Chapel of St Ignatius 12th Avenue 901 Seattle Washington This jewel-like building is one of Steven Holl's most inspiring The irregular volumes of this space are derived from one of his initial sketches, 'seven bottles of light in a stone box' The hand made feel and textured walls on which the light plays belies the simple, tilt-up concrete structure that contains it At night, the colored light shines outward like a beacon, drawing people in m² Steven Holl Seattle University M-Th: 7:00 am - 10:00 pm F: 7:00 am - 7:00 pm Sa: 9:00 am 5:00 pm Su: 9:00 am - 10:00 pm Take the James Street exit off I-5,(coming from the north, exit 165; coming from the south, exit 164A), continue east until 12th Avenue Take a left at the light 12th Avenue and proceed north two blocks to East Marion Take a left on East Marion and turn into the Seattle University visitor parking lot 3

4 photo: Andrew Larsen photo: Andrew Pisarek Experience Music Project 5th Avenue North 325 Seattle Washington The Experience Music Project in Seattle is a museum dedicated to the exploration of creativity and innovation in popular music The museum contains mostly rock memorabilia and technology-intensive multimedia displays, but is not limited to that It was founded by Paul Allen of Microsoft fame, and it is located in the Seattle city centre, near the Space Needle The building was designed by Frank Gehry, bearing a lot of similarities to his other works Its sheet metal construction resembles Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles Much of the building material is exposed in the building's interior Reminding many of a smashed guitar, Gehry himself stated: "We started collecting pictures of Stratocasters, bringing in guitar bodies, drawing on those shapes in developing our ideas" The architecture was greeted by Seattle residents with a mixture of acclaim for Gehry and derision for this particular edifice, some calling it a 'blob' and others 'the hemmorhoids' m² Structural engineer Gehry Partners Hoffman Construction Company Paul Allen Robin 10:00-17:00 daily The building is served by the Seattle Monorail, which connects it to Westlake center The monorail runs through the building There are also many bus lines going to the Seattle Center If you are going by car, you will find many lots and ample street parking surrounding EMP and the Seattle Center campus The largest lot in close proximity to EMP is located at 5th Avenue North and Harrison Street 4

5 Olympic Sculpture Park Western Avenue 2901 Seattle Washington Occupying a nine-acre site that straddles a major thoroughfare and rail lines, the Olympic Sculpture Park combines a museum, sculptures, landscaping and a beach onto a site of a former brownfield It is operated by the Seattle Art Museum, which is located a few blocks south in the city The park is free to the public and includes works by some of the most famous sculptors in the world, such as Alexander Calder and Richard Serra , Landscape architect Landscape designer Weiss Manfredi Charles Anderson Landscape ure Seattle Art Museum Opens 30 minutes prior to sunrise, closes 30 minutes after sunset From I-5 heading North: take the Seneca Street exit Turn slightly left onto Seneca Street Turn right onto 1st Avenue Turn left onto Broad Street The Olympic Sculpture Park will be on your right on Broad Street between Western Avenue and Alaskan Way From I-5 heading South: Take the Union Street exit Stay straight onto Union Street Turn right onto 1st Avenue Turn left onto Broad Street The Olympic Sculpture Park will be on your right on Broad Street between Western Ave and Alaskan Way 5
