3 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Nazar Leskiw Placa de Lisboa R das Carmelitas Porto Portuguese studio Balonas and Menano s have created the "Praca de Lisboa" in Porto, The project was completed as an effort to improve an area in decline in the middle of Porto and creates a space for community and livelihood The structure includes three levels, with its top-most level consisting of a green roof planted with olive trees referencing the "Porta do Oliva" The middle level is dedicated to commercial use, and the ground level provides room for a refined parking lot and pedestrian spaces 2014 Balonas and Menano s Nazar photo: Nazar Leskiw 3

4 photo: Aires Mateus photo: Aires Mateus Rectory of Universidade Nova de Lisboa Travessa Estevão Pinto Lisbon The site used to be remote a land of farms and desolate ground is the location of the Campolide Campus of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa With the former Jesuit School, it creates a public square of imposing scale and provides a three-dimensional expression to the entrapped territory The program is divided into two distinct zones Administrative offices are located in a slender tower overlooking Monsanto Park Large scale foyers, meeting rooms and auditoriums are set at the base of the building, housed within a plinth that marks the difference in level between the public square and the school plateau The rising tower has the same height of the three-floor School building Its façades are clad in white stone with an abstract layout of fenestration concealing the many levels of the building The public square and grand steps leading up to it are clad in the same stone These more symbolic and formal spaces are carved and sculpted within the plinth photo: Aires Mateus 1998 Client Aires Mateus s Universidade Nova de Lisboa FMVB The Rectorate facilitates access to the building, however guided tours are not provided Visits must be scheduled with the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa s Rectorate at least 15 days in advance, otherwise they will not be authorized The building is located at the Campus of Universidade Nova de Lisboa: Campus de Campolide 4

12 photo: invisiblegentleman photo: invisiblegentleman Arroios apartment R Francisco Sanches Lisbon The apartment is part of a typical Lisbon old building It's long proportion produces a set of spaces on which the presence of natural light is the main challenge The apartment is refurbished having the courtyard/garden as a central area that is totally open to the living room and adjacent spaces The courtyard is the main source of natural light for the apartment The continuity and flow between the common spaces of the apartment (living room, dining room and kitchen) is clearly felt by the absence of doors between these spaces Transitions are felt by in-built furniture or by the memory of ancient doors The 3 bedrooms are redesigned and functionally more adequate to modern needs The master bedroom becomes a suite with the private bathroom and the in-built closet Project is not public! 13 photo: Leonardo Finotti photo: Leonardo Finotti Modernization of the Dinis Secondary School Rua Manuel Teixeira Gomes Lisbon The investment in the education sector, in particular the Modernization of Educational Facilities Program for Secondary Learning, has as its objective rehabilitating and modernizing high school buildings, replacing their physical and functional efficiency, in a perspective of creating conditions for the practice of a modern education, adapted to the programmatic contents, the didactics and the new information and communication technologies The intervention of modernization of the D Dinis Secondary School, beyond improving the architectural, constructive and respective infra-structural conditions of the existing buildings, it also aimed the programmatic improvement of the equipment by adding functional spaces in a centralized location in regards to the existing constructions, so that all the educational activity gravitates around it photo: Leonardo Finotti 2008 Client Bak Gordon arquitectos Parque Escolar uralguides 13

16 photo: João Morgado photo: João Morgado Building Rehabilitation In Calcada do Lavra Calçada do Lavra Lisbon Project concerns the rehabilitation of an old building, presumably built at the end of the XIX century, but that was only registered in 1906 A cost-controlled operation, proposed by the owner, Santa Casa da Miseri córdia de Lisboa, intended to rehab this building that was at risk of collapsethe project seeks to preserve as much as possible of the original elements of the building floors and walls? proposing a reformulation of the existing subdivision, which was characterized by having too cramped spaces, resulting in the creation of eight apartments, two of which are duplexetaking advantage of the need for the introduction of a lift, the entrance lobby is redesigned, suggesting a path that bypasses the volume - released from outer walls - required for the placing of this equipment The new design of the atrium that extends its original dimension, emphasizes the perspective on the existent ladder, which is maintained, allowing for a better natural lighting and offering a few scale photo: João Morgado Project is not public! 2012 Client Jorge Mealha SantaCasa da Mesericódia de Lisboa JorgeMealhaArquitecto 16

17 photo: João Copertino photo: João Copertino RATTON The Bakery Largo Duque do Cadaval Lisbon Located in an Lisbon`s historical and emblematic area recently rehabilitated, the new bakery RATTON, is located in Largo Duque do Cadaval, next to Rossio train station As part of the historic Rossio station building, this new bakery wishes to answer the needs of a large amount of housing and services located in this area The name RATTON comes from the owner's family name and his French origin, reflecting in this way the logical connection between the Portuguese and French products produced, and the tradition in the bakery and pastry methods from the two countries This space is developed on the commercial ground floor of Largo Duque do Cadaval, existing associated exterior wooden deck terraces, providing clients the comfort and possibility of enjoying there products in a privileged outdoor location The choice of materials for RATTON *The Bakery*, reflects an informal sense to this bakery but with high quality in all elements and details that constitute it Floor area/size m² Client S3arquitectos Doca de Santo S3arquitectos photo: João Copertino daily: 8:00-21:

The project includes: the spatial reorganization so as not to enter directly into the living-room, changing the entrance to walking through space, inside the kitchen space The adequacy of the minimum standards of hygiene for the current parameters - increasing the area of the bathroom, endowing it with shower area, sink and natural light + ventilation The maintenance of the facade elements, in materials with higher thermal efficiency The correction of light through saturated color in the most interior spaces of the house - the kitchen and bathroom The possibility of changing the spaces through sliding doors in translucent polycarbonate, which adds to the house a greater diversity of ways of inhabit photo: invisiblegentleman Project is not public! 20 photo: invisiblegentleman photo: invisiblegentleman Braamcamp Freire Secondary School Rua De Gama Barros Lisbon photo: invisiblegentleman The intervention at the Braamcamp Freire Secondary School in Pontinha, had the reorganization of the scholar space as premise The project consisted in the reorganization of the existing pavilionaire typology into one single building The permanent and informal studying spaces are being valorized, integrating the concept of "learning street", encouraging the proximity between the students, the various educative programs and the whole scholar community The school organizes itself around a central "learning square", whose relationship with the other recreational spaces allows an adequate integration in the topography of the site as well as in the landscape The building facades materialize themselves in fair faced and prefabricated concrete, thus minimizing the maintenance costs In the interior, adequate resistant materials are used Project is not public!
