4 photo: Sahil Latheef photo: Manuel Montenegro Vila da Feira Market Rua dos Descobrimentos Santa Maria da Feira This is one of the key works for the revision of the modern movement in the CIAM, forcing a change on the key focus of the practice of architecture Fernando Távora's architecture springs from his questioning of modernity, he sought to integrate local and traditional values, values that were more popular than erudite, as is the case with the Vila de Feira Market Fernando Távora died on September in his hometown of Oporto, He was 82 Founder of "Escola do Porto" (Oporto School), Távora was a teacher and lifelong mentor to Álvaro Siza Vieira and Eduardo Souto de Moura From convents to markets to residential projects, all in, he sought to integrate local and traditional values within a modern vocabulary Távora's most notable projects include the Quinta da Conceicao Tennis Pavilion, Vila da Feira Municipal Market, and the Santa Marinha Convent photo: Sahil Latheef Main designer, Fernando Távora Vila da Feira manecas From Oporto via freeway A1, South bound, exit 18 (Santa Maria da Feira), near the city centre 4

7 Sports Arena Rua de Pevidal 4420 Gondomar One of the recent projects from the Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira This Sports Arena is a big complex with two sports pavilions Very influenced by Louis Khan's platonic works and with some Oscar Niemeyer's sensuality, this work is all made out of concrete and steel as the exterior façades are covered with bricks 2007 Câmara Municipal de Gondomar Joao_Sousa Depending if there is an event By car: From Porto take the highway IC29 to Gondomar and take the exit to the centre of Gondomar It's right beside the exit 7

8 University Library Campus Universitário de Santiago Aveiro The library plays a central role in the organisation of the university campus situated on the edge of the city of Aveiro A free-standing curving wall characterises the western façade and expresses the reinforced concrete structure of the building This baffle admits reflected light while a continuous horizontal cut at the third level assures (for those seated) a visual connection across the sait marshes extending to the horizon All electrical and air-conditioning services are integrated into the perimeter shelving system at each floor allowing the ceilings to be left uncluttered and spatially continuous with the vertical voids which traverse the interior spaces This configuration also permits the spatial continuity of the double curvature of the ceiling at the top floor 1994 Universidade de Aveiro Joao_Sousa hours From the train station at the city centre there are several buses going in the direction of the university campus 8

9 Bouça Housing Complex Rua Melo II Porto This project, from 1973, was integrated in the program SAAL in Porto to create social housing for poor people And even though it was made through highly controlled costs, Siza Vieira managed to create a housing complex that is worth studying and visiting In 1977 there where only two blocks completed Nowadays, in 2004, all the blocks were concluded and a new life was given to this complex Instead of having only poor people living here, the low prices and high quality living attracted artists, architects and young couples to settle in With four levels, each block present an articulation in terms of passages that connect the whole complex Together with the housing units there is also commercial spaces and green open spaces 2004, Urban planner SAAL Joao_Sousa Only the public spaces are public, it's a housing complex Take the subway in Porto till the station "Lapa" it's right there! 9

11 photo: Julien B photo: Julien B Malagueira Housing R do Alto da Azinheira Évora Here the architectural forms typical of the Alentejo, square houses painted a blinding white with broad chimneys and few windows, confront Modernist volumetric experiments, conferring on this part of the city a uniformity that is, however, subtly disrupted by a modern version of an aqueduct consisting of above-ground supply lines Tempering what might otherwise be too "white and orthogonal" a site, this structure, arching over the neighbourhood, seems to avenge the absence of history that any city built from the ground up necessarily represents Here, Siza's apparently simple mixture of typologies results in an impressive urban complexity photo: Julien B Project is not public! 12 photo: Milharadas Terraços de Bragança Rua do Alecrim Lisbon The housing project Terraços de Bragança occupies an area of 5000m2 of the historical city centre of Lisbon There is a great sense of responsibility of the architect to maintain a certain dialogue with the existing buildings and it results in a building that is at the same time very modern but with a lot of local inspirations and elements The main façades are covered with stone Lioz and the blue tiles, traditional of Behind the building of the street there is the other building of the housing complex with a very contemporary kind of drawing, catching the tremendous views, facing south to the river Tejo Project is not public! 2004 Services engineer Structural engineer António Vieira Pereira Segedães Tavares Imopólis Joao_Sousa By the subway you can go till "Cais do Sodré" or "Baixa/Chiado" and then it's really easy to walk till there 12

13 photo: Carlos Dias photo: Tiago Oliveira Piscina das Marés Avenida da Liberdade Matosinhos Developed and built between 1961 and 1966, this building became one of the most interesting buildings to visit in Porto since Álvaro Siza designed it As still a young architect, Siza was appointed to design a new swimming pool at Leça da Palmeira right between the rocks and the sea He spent months drawing and feeling the environment so he could design a building that fitted perfectly along the shore It's architecture made from the site and for the site All the materials are raw Concrete, wood and steel are all processed with traditional techniques of constructing photo: Tobias 1966, Artist, Urban planner Joao_Sousa Câmara Municipal de Matosinhos From May to September: Monday to Sunday from 9:00h till 20:00h There are buses coming from the center of Porto By car take the highway A28 from Porto to the north and exit to "Leixões" Port From there go always straight ahead near the sea till you reach the big avenue where it is 13

14 photo: João Morgado photo: Ana N Pavilion of Alameda dos Oceanos 1990 Lisbon The architect's masterpiece, both for the tension he manages to create between a necessary, desired and difficult monumentality, and the delicate articulation - with the program and the location - both for daring of the solution and its intensive effect of a representative image symbol The palatial theme, which he used first in the school in Setúbal, is here taken to expressive heights, combining the 'colossal' arcade with it's reflection and sublimation in the waters of the quay The roof of the large ceremonial area is the finishing touch to the effect, which reminds us of Niemeyer and the most innovative of modern architecture and engineering in concrete and steel It is an enormous 'shell', appearing to throw off its supports (only visible as the skeleton, like armour), and the down-facing curvature (an 'anti-dome'), like a reinforced tent, ephemeral and paradoxically vulnerable, with apparent fragility, but an enormous plastic force photo: Andy M Project is not public! 15 Pavilion of Av da Lousã 3000 Coimbra The Pavilion of for the Exposition in Hannover is a pre-fabricated and dismantleable building that was later rebuilt in Coimbra Is formed from a metallic structure, over which walls have been built and covered with around 55 tons of expanded cork agglomerate and also by hand made glazed tiles on the welcome patio The façade facing the river is covered with lias stone and displaying engraved letters forming the word PORTUGAL The rooftop was made out of a double glass fibre canvas membrane and as it is translucid, allows through the beauty of natural light simultaneously serving as an energy saving device The choice of cork is related to the fact that it is a 100% natural material, isotherm, extremely versatile and totally recyclable and of which is the main source of production Lias stone and glazed tile have been integrated as they are two traditional materials which contribute for a particularly interesting interplay of colour and light 2000 Main designer, Eduardo Souto de Moura Expo 2000 Hannover Joao_Sousa October to March: 10H00-18H00 (Tuesday to Friday) 15H00-19H00 (Saturday, Sunday and Festive days) April a September: 10H00-19H00 (Tuesday to Friday) 15H00-20H00 (Saturday, Sunday and Festive days) It's placed in the "Vale do Mondego" park right next to the "Pedro e Inês" Bridge and facing the river 15

17 Jardim Escola S João de Deus Avenida José Júlio Penafiel This is maybe one of the least known works of Alvaro Siza, this garden and school is an exemplary work where a minimum of resources are used to make an architecture of great formal and functional value Here the specialistic drawing methods are taken to the maximum of expressive language, only through sufficiently simple and constructive systems Project is not public! 1991 Joao_Sousa Telefone: penafiel@escolasjoaodeuspt 17

18 photo: Filipe Brandão photo: Filipe Brandão Igreja de Marco de Canaveses Barrio dos Murteirados 55 Marco de Canaveses The Santa Maria Church in Marco de Canavezes (near Porto) is part of an overall complex that, together with a planned Parish Centre, forms a small urban square This is a quote by architect Siza, when visiting the site: The visit to the place already chosen had disturbed myself deeply: it was a very difficult place, with great height differences, lofty to a highway with a lot of traffic As if it was not enough, that area was marked by buildings of terrible quality The construction of this parochial center is also the construction of a place, in substitution of a scarp very accentuated photo: Filipe Brandão 1990 filipeb Take the national railway line from Porto to Marco de Canaveses From the station you should be able to get a bus to town centre, since it's a little far Taxis are not too expensive either and are usually available You can already see the building on top of a hill from the train staton 18

19 photo: Carlos Dias Casa Armanda Passos Av do Mal Gomes da Costa 4150 Porto Amidst horizontal and vertical planes conditioned by the contours of the terrain, memories of Zen gardens and fire signs, the Armanda Passos house has gently risen Designed to be lived in at all hours of the day, when light seeks out shade, and shade opens itself to the light, the house-atelier, commissioned by painter Armanda Passos from the most international name in Portuguese architecture, allows the complicity naturally created by the architect with his work to transpire at each step This is the second dwelling designed by Siza in Porto The first was built in the 1960 s on the Avenida dos Combatentes photo: Carlos Dias Project is not public! 2005 Armanda Passos MI_MOA 19

21 photo: Traço Alternativo photo: Traço Alternativo Urban Renewal Aliados Avenue Avenida dos Aliados Porto The Project for the Avenida dos Aliados surges from the need to build, in that place, three metro stations that are practically contiguous: São Bento, Aliados and Trindade The intervention opted for the reformulation of the existing vegetation, it privileged the thick arboreal but freed the ground from flower beds and other obstacles which restricted the use of the Avenue located in the heart of the city as a large public space, as it happens in countless cities, responding to a use that was, in fact, already in practice, although in precarious conditions The project redesigned the urban furniture but re-used the old existing street lamps On the upper side of the Avenue, near the City Hall, a water mirror was built, surrounded by benches, chairs and trees 2005 Main designer, Eduardo Souto de Moura uralguides photo: Traço Alternativo 21

24 Casa das Artes Rua de Ruben A 4050 Porto The building is located in the gardens of a neo-classical mansion in Porto, dating from the beginning of the 20th century The program for the competition proposed a cinema, an auditorium and an exhibition gallery, as well as the conservation of the gardens as they were This is one of the first built projects of Eduardo Souto Moura It's mainly composed of two parallel granite stone walls, with all the programin the middle With a very minimalistic approach, this building is composed of great building details, reminding some of Mies Van der Rohe's characteristics 1981, Interior architect Eduardo Souto de Moura Joao_Sousa Secretaria de Estado da Cultura Take a bus from the city center that passes on the street "Rua do Campo Alegre", or at the "Avenida da Boavista" From there it's easy to reach it by foot 24

25 Manoel de Oliveira Cinema House Rua de Viana de Lima 4150 Porto The Cinema House represents a significant change in the formal expression of Eduardo Souto de Moura A change of style that approaches this work to the formal expression of the architecture of Siza Vieira This building pretends to be similar to the surrounding houses, having some distortions to fit better on the plot The overall image resembles to the lens of the camera, with dynamic eyes like the insects, searching for the views to the see in between the buildings 1998, Artist, Interior architect, Landscape architect, Urban planner Eduardo Souto de Moura Joao_Sousa Câmara Municipal do Porto Right now [November 2007] it's on restoration because it was left abandoned since it was finished By bus (number 78) on the "Avenida Marechal Gomes da Costa" till "Praça do Império" and after that by foot following the street "Rua de Bartolomeu Velho" 25

26 Children Library Rua de Entre Quintas 4050 Porto This small pavilion located between the trees in the gardens of the Crystal Palace has two levels with a double height vestibule The library appears as an "objet trouvé" in the nature, participating in this spontaneous environment The volume resembles an old train wagon, lifted slightly off the ground turning it into a light and welcoming space The used materials were chosen according to the environment, following the textures and colours of the nature The structure and wall panels are made out of wood and the windows are sheets of transparent polycarbonate located at the height of the children with awesome views to the gardens It's a building that fits perfectly in this natural environment 1997 Paula Santos Câmar Municipal do Porto Joao_Sousa Monday: Tuesday-Saturday: It's located in the gardens of the Crystal Palace You need to search and follow the signs "Biblioteca Infantil" to reach it 26

27 Housing Block Rua do Teatro Porto This housing block situated on the western part of Porto, in front of the Atlantic ocean is a conceptual reinvention of the traditional urban houses of the XVIII century Instead of a stone structure, here the structure is in steel but is completely visible and separated from the other elements But at the same time there are traditional materials that were used on the façades, transposing the modern architecture into a more site related project Project is not public! 1995, Interior architect, Urban planner Eduardo Souto de Moura Joao_Sousa On the western part of Porto called "Foz" it's easy to reach From the avenue "Avenida do Brasil" that follows the coast line 27

28 Housing Complex Rua Orfeão do Porto 4150 Porto Built in white reinforced concrete this housing complex is formed by two separate blocks connected by the mainly vertical access with the lift and the staircase All the floors are composed by an external gallery that connects all the appartments allowing them to face the great views of the sea and to receive good sunlight With a very simple and contemporary language this complex establishes new ways of drawing the housing complex in a simple and elegant manner Project is not public! 2007 Adalberto Dias Joao_Sousa Located on the western part of the city, right beside the "ring", it's easy to reach if you have the "Ipanema Park Hotel" as a reference point 28

29 Bom Sucesso Market Rua de Caldas Xavier 4150 Porto This building was one of the first buildings to be built in this zone In 1951 the works begin to give shape to this project Its structure of reinforced concrete is made out of pre-casted beams disposed in a radial shape The way the entry of light is designed and works in the interior is absolutely incredible and shows a great sensibility in this subject Even after more than 50 years of use, this building remains almost as good as new All the spatial richness is still present and as a market it has a rich social life photo: Carlos Dias 1952 ARS-Arquitectos Câmara Municipal do Porto Joao_Sousa From around 700h till 1700h Right next to the square where there is "Casa da Música" It's less than five minute walk from the metro station 29

30 photo: Fernando Guerra photo: Fernando Guerra Gosho Restaurant Avenida da Boavista Porto Gosho Restaurant ('Imperial Palace') is located in the food court of a 5-star hotel The project contains several specific areas for the several types of Japanese food that the restaurant serves, with a total capacity of 101 seats The atmosphere of the restaurant cherishes 'being' in public, through different themes Besides evoking traditional Japanese architecture through a crude and strong presence of the materials, the design creates theatricality with two entrance tunnels and a raised arrival, underlines with white paint the amusing and seemingly irrational posture of the existing structure and nourishes a certain mystery by dissolving the space limits with a permeable curtain, a translucent screen and dark periphery walls (text from architect's website) photo: Fernando Guerra 2007 anc arquitectos Pedro_Loureiro 30
