3 photo: Roel Backaert photo: Roel Backaert Bar a Margem Bom Sucesso 1400 Lisbon Ricardo Vaz and Joao Pedro Falcao de Campos built a pavilion on the esplanade along the River Tejo with little more than white-painted, screwed-together steel sections and glass The steel sections (identical I-sections) are both supporting structure and 'façade cladding', since the building is not insulated Where the façades become roof the pattern changes and glass becomes steel and vice versa The result is an alternating rhythm of plane and relief, a play between closed and open That play is reinforced by the fact that the glass of the long elevations can be completely slid open between the top and bottom sections which extend beyond the volume, whereupon the pavilion becomes an outdoor bar Any functions that might detract from the openness and the pattern of profiles like the kitchen and toilets, have been tucked out of sight below the ground photo: Roel Backaert Main designer, Structural engineer Falcão de Campos Arquitecto José Ricardo Vaz Miguel Villar - Betar À Margem Kirsten_Hannema Sunday to Wednesday - From 10:00AM to 9:00PM Saturday - From 10:00AM to 00:00 Thurday to The bar is situated in the popular neighbourhood of Belém on the docks of Bom Sucesso, in a zone where a lot of bars and kiosks are situated 3

5 photo: Nuno P photo: Vítor O Alvalade XXI Stadium Rua Professor Fernando da Fonseca Lisbon Estádio José Alvalade is a football stadium in Lisbon, home of Sporting, one of 's biggest clubs It was designed by Tomás Taveira and was classified by UEFA as a 5-star stadium, enabling it to host finals of major UEFA events This stadium originally projected to hold only 40,000 spectators at any given time - has a capacity of 50,466 and was acoustically engineered as a venue for major concerts Its official opening was on 6 August 2003 when Sporting played and beat Manchester United 3-1 It also hosted the 2005 UEFA Cup final between Sporting and CSKA Moscow, which CSKA won 3-1 The stadium also has underground parking for fans during official matches On the exterior, the stadium features multi-coloured tiles and colours On the interior some seats have different colours to give an illusion that the stadium is always full The stadium also has a marvellous museum of the club and fans may see the museum when visiting the stadium photo: Hugo Mamede Floor area/size m² Tomás Taveira Sporting Club JMMM Opening times: Monday-Friday: 11:30, 14:30 & 16:00 Saturday & Sunday: 10:30, 12:00, 14:30 & 16:00 Prices: 800 (tour only: museum only: 600) The Estádio José Alvalade is ten minutes from the centre of Lisbon and is easy to get to by both public transport and private car Car: From the Segunda Circular ring road: - If you are going to the south end, turn off at Campo Grande - If you are going to the north end, turn off at Telheiras - If you are heading towards Lisbon, turn off at the Stadium exit Bus Line 1, 3, 46, 47, 77, 101, 106 & 108 Metro: Campo Grande 5

6 photo: Nuno B photo: Pedro M Estadio da Luz Av General Norton de Matos Lisbon entacaoasp A modern structure that can go down as one of the finest modern sports facilities in Europe with UEFA awarding it five stars After its opening on the 25th of October 2003, it went on to host the final of Euro 2004 as well as some of the other tournament highlights Most notably for the host nation, one was a penalty shoot out win over England in the quarter finals Damon Lavelle designed the stadium to focus on light and transparency, offering an incentive to name the stadium "Estadio da Luz" (meaning stadium of light in Portuguese) as the original stadium was named after the neighbourhood the old ground was built on The polycarbonate roof of the stadium allows the sun's rays to penetrate it, lighting the stadium The roof, which is supported by tie beams of four steel arches, seems to float on the underlying tribunes The arches measure 43 metres in height and help to define the look of the stadium after having been shaped to be similar to the wavy profile of the 3 tiers photo: João Morgado Floor area/size m² Populous Sport Lisboa e Benfica JMMM The Estadio da Luz is situated in the northern part of Lisbon and is well served by the city's road system Car: The stadium is best reached from the Segunda Circular ring road, which connects with the national motorway network Metro: Take the Blue Line and get out either at Alto dos Moinhos or Colégio Militar/Luz Both of them are very close to the stadium Nearest airport: Lisbon International Airport (15 minutes) 6

9 photo: Antunes photo: Pedro P Vasco da Gama Tower Passeio das Tágides 1990 Lisbon The panoramic tower was conceived as an emblematic land mark of 'Expo 98', being based on the celebration of the 500 years since the discovery of the maritime route to India by Vasco da Gama The silhouette represents the metaphor of the sail which relates the secular tradition of the Portuguese as a people connected to the sea Symbolically the "prow of the ship" on the banks of the Tagus, headed east The way the building is positioned in space expresses the moment of the discovery of the world, emphasized by the mast and respective "crow's nest" which represents the volume of the restaurant and the platform from which the Atlantic Ocean can be sighted beyond a large part of the city of Lisbon's metropolitan area Both the observation deck and the restaurant were closed in 2001 The owner of the tower, state-owned Parque Expo, has received permission for a plan by Portuguese architect Nuno Leónidas to expand to a 21-storey building, on the riverside, for a luxury hotel Project is not public! 11 photo: Marcelo N photo: Nazar Leskiw Gare do Oriente Station Av D João II 1990 Lisbon As foreseen before the tender, the station created a physical barrier between the city and the river This was a barrier we did not want as we wanted to strengthen this connection and, at the same time, use the present dynamism as a catalyst for the creation of a new and higher quality of life in Lisbon The project is a challenge at various levels - in terms of town planning and architecturally - as it includes two new avenues created in order to connect the station to the city and also, an adjacent square which intends to accentuate and make the most of the longitudinal axis of the building This multi-modal platform centralizes transport structures for the different transport systems which will service the whole intervention zone and much more There are five main nuclei, each corresponding to the various systems, specifically the train station (with it's public areas) the metro station the underground car park and the underground gallery General consultant Santiago Calatrava Tecned Parque Expo JMMM photo: Rodrigo da Cunha Metro - Oriente Bus Train 11

12 photo: João Morgado photo: Ana N Pavilion of Alameda dos Oceanos 1990 Lisbon The architect's masterpiece, both for the tension he manages to create between a necessary, desired and difficult monumentality, and the delicate articulation - with the program and the location - both for daring of the solution and its intensive effect of a representative image symbol The palatial theme, which he used first in the school in Setúbal, is here taken to expressive heights, combining the 'colossal' arcade with it's reflection and sublimation in the waters of the quay The roof of the large ceremonial area is the finishing touch to the effect, which reminds us of Niemeyer and the most innovative of modern architecture and engineering in concrete and steel It is an enormous 'shell', appearing to throw off its supports (only visible as the skeleton, like armour), and the down-facing curvature (an 'anti-dome'), like a reinforced tent, ephemeral and paradoxically vulnerable, with apparent fragility, but an enormous plastic force photo: Andy M Project is not public! 17 photo: Aires Mateus photo: Aires Mateus Rectory of Universidade Nova de Lisboa Travessa Estevão Pinto Lisbon The site used to be remote a land of farms and desolate ground is the location of the Campolide Campus of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa With the former Jesuit School, it creates a public square of imposing scale and provides a three-dimensional expression to the entrapped territory The program is divided into two distinct zones Administrative offices are located in a slender tower overlooking Monsanto Park Large scale foyers, meeting rooms and auditoriums are set at the base of the building, housed within a plinth that marks the difference in level between the public square and the school plateau The rising tower has the same height of the three-floor School building Its façades are clad in white stone with an abstract layout of fenestration concealing the many levels of the building The public square and grand steps leading up to it are clad in the same stone These more symbolic and formal spaces are carved and sculpted within the plinth photo: Aires Mateus 1998 Aires Mateus s Universidade Nova de Lisboa FMVB The Rectorate facilitates access to the building, however guided tours are not provided Visits must be scheduled with the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa s Rectorate at least 15 days in advance, otherwise they will not be authorized The building is located at the Campus of Universidade Nova de Lisboa: Campus de Campolide 17

22 photo: Richard van Riel Vasco da Gama Bridge Ponte Vasco da Gama Alcochete 2890 Lisbon The Vasco da Gama Bridge (Portuguese: Ponte Vasco da Gama) is a cable-stayed bridge flanked by viaducts and roads that spans the Tagus River near Lisbon, capital of It is the longest bridge in Europe (including viaducts); and 9th longest in the world, with a total length of 172 km (107 mi), including 0829 km (05 mi) for the main bridge, 115 km (71 mi) in viaducts, and 48 km (30 mi) in dedicated access roads Its purpose is to alleviate the congestion on Lisbon's other bridge (25 de Abril Bridge), and to join previously unconnected motorways radiating from Lisbon The bridge was opened to traffic on March 29, 1998, 18 months after construction first began, just in time for Expo 98, the World's Fair that celebrated the 500th anniversary of the discovery by Vasco da Gama of the sea route from Europe to India (Contents Wikipedia) photo: Richard van Riel Armando Rito richardvanriel 22

23 photo: Joao Morgado photo: Joao Morgado Coffee Shop & Shading Surface R do Estado da Índia Lisbon This intervention is part of an urban requalification plan for an avenue in Sacavém, on the outskirts of Lisbon It is promoted by Loures City Hall The project was composed of three interventions, but only two were completed The proposed buildings had the common goal of playing the decisive role at the qualification of public spaces in-between buildings, formerly abandoned and disqualified After the initial site visit and interpretation of the urban plan's main dynamics, the need was felt to design three built elements sharing a common nature, although holding different uses and problematics These three small interventions, with objective and circumscribed problems, should contribute to simplify the complexity of the environment and, above all, to reduce the impact of the turbulent context Therefore, the architects sought to design three quiet buildings, under the exciting motto 'nothing new under the sun' photo: Joao Morgado ateliermob ateliermob 23

24 photo: Fernando Guerra photo: Fernando Guerra Hotel Altis Belem Doca do Bom Sucesso Belem Lisbon The Hotel Altis Belém is on Lisbon s waterfront between Bom Sucesso Dock and the Folk Art Museum It's a 50-room, 5-star hotel with sailing facilities Its position at right angles to the Tagus offers fine views of the city sweeping down to the river and of the riverside areas from Belém Tower to the Padrão das Descobertas (monument to the Discoveries) The scale of the design establishes a relationship with the dock and creates a kind of aquatic piazza The hotel enters into a formal relationship with the Folk Art Museum building through the character of the eastern façade The design opens up the hotel functionally and formally to the riverside promenade with a ground level that is open to the public and houses shops, a restaurant, café and bar and an extensive open-air seating area The interior plans are the work of the FSSMGN studio photo: Fernando Guerra Floor area/size m² Main designer, Interior architect Risco s FSSMGN Altis,SA thecommunicationoffice 24
