2 photo: Roel Backaert photo: Roel Backaert Bar a Margem Bom Sucesso 1400 Lisbon Ricardo Vaz and Joao Pedro Falcao de Campos built a pavilion on the esplanade along the River Tejo with little more than white-painted, screwed-together steel sections and glass The steel sections (identical I-sections) are both supporting structure and 'façade cladding', since the building is not insulated Where the façades become roof the pattern changes and glass becomes steel and vice versa The result is an alternating rhythm of plane and relief, a play between closed and open That play is reinforced by the fact that the glass of the long elevations can be completely slid open between the top and bottom sections which extend beyond the volume, whereupon the pavilion becomes an outdoor bar Any functions that might detract from the openness and the pattern of profiles like the kitchen and toilets, have been tucked out of sight below the ground photo: Roel Backaert Main designer, Structural engineer Falcão de Campos Arquitecto José Ricardo Vaz Miguel Villar - Betar À Margem Kirsten_Hannema Sunday to Wednesday - From 10:00AM to 9:00PM Saturday - From 10:00AM to 00:00 Thurday to The bar is situated in the popular neighbourhood of Belém on the docks of Bom Sucesso, in a zone where a lot of bars and kiosks are situated 2

3 photo: João Morgado photo: João Morgado Santa Marta Lighthouse and Museum Ponta de Santa Marta Cascais a-marta Between land and sea, along a strip of land in constant change with he passing of the years, human intervention has gradually settled into the most varied types of inhabitation From the seventeenth century until now the superimposing of different intentions for this spot, the material and technological resources of the moment and availability of the inherited patrimony have all contributed to a succession of adaptations and additions Notwithstanding this, the complex encompasses architectural units whose reading is unequivocal, units laid out according to still-clear organisational principals The state of adulteration and decadence of one part of the complex is the result of a process of natural selection that the project design tries to turn to its favour Identifying the elements of greater perdurability or greater poetic charge, the proposal reconstructs with, and out of, these a basic order that both encompasses the memory of passing time and makes a new use visible Structural engineer Services engineer Project manager Aires Mateus s Joel Sequeira Joule Udra Construtora LDA Câmara Munícipal de Cascais JMMM photo: João Morgado Timetable: Summer (1st May to 30th September) - Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 AM to 7 PM Winter (1st October to 30th April) Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 AM to 8 PM You can park your car directly next to the citadel, or take the bus from the city centre, the 'buscas' that passes by every 10 minutes 3

5 photo: Marcelo N Gare do Oriente Station Av D João II 1990 Lisbon As foreseen before the tender, the station created a physical barrier between the city and the river This was a barrier we did not want as we wanted to strengthen this connection and, at the same time, use the present dynamism as a catalyst for the creation of a new and higher quality of life in Lisbon The project is a challenge at various levels - in terms of town planning and architecturally - as it includes two new avenues created in order to connect the station to the city and also, an adjacent square which intends to accentuate and make the most of the longitudinal axis of the building This multi-modal platform centralizes transport structures for the different transport systems which will service the whole intervention zone and much more There are five main nuclei, each corresponding to the various systems, specifically the train station (with it's public areas) the metro station the underground car park and the underground gallery General consultant Santiago Calatrava Tecned Parque Expo JMMM photo: Rodrigo da Cunha Metro - Oriente Bus Train 5

6 photo: João Morgado photo: Ana N Pavilion of Alameda dos Oceanos 1990 Lisbon The architect's masterpiece, both for the tension he manages to create between a necessary, desired and difficult monumentality, and the delicate articulation - with the program and the location - both for daring of the solution and its intensive effect of a representative image symbol The palatial theme, which he used first in the school in Setúbal, is here taken to expressive heights, combining the 'colossal' arcade with it's reflection and sublimation in the waters of the quay The roof of the large ceremonial area is the finishing touch to the effect, which reminds us of Niemeyer and the most innovative of modern architecture and engineering in concrete and steel It is an enormous 'shell', appearing to throw off its supports (only visible as the skeleton, like armour), and the down-facing curvature (an 'anti-dome'), like a reinforced tent, ephemeral and paradoxically vulnerable, with apparent fragility, but an enormous plastic force photo: Andy M Project is not public! 8 Camoes Theatre Passeio de Neptuno Lisbon Confronted with two imposing adjacent buildings - the 'Pavilion of Knowledge' and the 'Oceanarium' - the design sought simplicity It's compositional form is somewhat abstract The base of the building is in keeping with the materials used in the surrounding paving, and as a result seems to secure the structure to the ground The main entrance is through a foyer with a large window overlooking the 'Sea of Straw', the exterior and interior space intimately linked The finish in the interior of the auditorium aims to confer an atmosphere of sobriety and brings back the idea of 'La machine du Téatre' photo: Osvaldo Gago Associate architect Manuel Salgado Marino Frei Parque Expo JMMM Metro: Oriente 8

13 EDP Headquarters Av 24 de Julho Lisbon Headquarter for EDP - Energias de ranks among Europe's major electricity operators The location, in a landfill site in the city s front line between the hill and the River, corresponded to an empty lot, where in the past a power plant operated The building is composed of 2 towers, connected by 2 ramped passes that create a shaded public square at street level The building s image came from the research of a system of lights and shadows This concept comes true through the repetition of vertical lines which are simultaneously the organization module of the office programme (120m); the structural solution (corresponding the steel columns); and through the façade that results from the geometric game created by the sequence of lines in full continuity from street-level, covering the roof and crossing the square to the other tower These also function as shade structures and create a dynamic effect, depending on the observer s position: sometimes opaque, sometimes transparent Floor area/size m² Main designer, Structural engineer Contractor Aires Mateus s FVarq AFA Consult Mota Engil Grupo EDP Energias de, SA Nazar 13

14 Lisbon Oceanarium Esplanada Dom Carlos Lisbon The Lisbon Oceanarium is an oceanarium in Lisbon It is located in the Parque das Nações, which was the exhibition grounds for the Expo '98 It is the largest indoor aquarium in Europe The Lisbon Oceanarium's conceptual design, architecture, and exhibit design was led by Peter Chermayeff of Peter Chermayeff LLC while at Cambridge Seven Associates 1998 Peter Chermayeff Nazar 14
