2 photo: Promontorio ure photo: Promontorio ure Praça de Entrecampos Avenida das Forças Armadas Lote Lisbon One of Lisbon's largest developments, Praça de Entrecampos is located between the Campus of University of Lisbon and the city's central business district The project compromises 700 apartment units, 600 student residences, a large office block and an office tower for the city's urban innovation agency, 5000 underground parking spaces, a public square and a contemporary art centre photo: Telmo Miller Project is not public! 3 photo: Antunes photo: Pedro P Vasco da Gama Tower Passeio das Tágides 1990 Lisbon The panoramic tower was conceived as an emblematic land mark of 'Expo 98', being based on the celebration of the 500 years since the discovery of the maritime route to India by Vasco da Gama The silhouette represents the metaphor of the sail which relates the secular tradition of the Portuguese as a people connected to the sea Symbolically the "prow of the ship" on the banks of the Tagus, headed east The way the building is positioned in space expresses the moment of the discovery of the world, emphasized by the mast and respective "crow's nest" which represents the volume of the restaurant and the platform from which the Atlantic Ocean can be sighted beyond a large part of the city of Lisbon's metropolitan area Both the observation deck and the restaurant were closed in 2001 The owner of the tower, state-owned Parque Expo, has received permission for a plan by Portuguese architect Nuno Leónidas to expand to a 21-storey building, on the riverside, for a luxury hotel Project is not public! 4 photo: Gordiano photo: João Morgado Atlantic Pavilion Rossio dos Olivais Lote 21301A Lisbon The pavilion is a building which is designed for major events for large audiences The pavilion's architectural design, as part of Expo98 experience, is a mixture of vanguard techniques with the historical and cultural connotation of the Portuguese Discoveries With a capacity for spectators and being a multi-purpose pavilion, an enormous variety of events can take place there The project's main consideration's were the comfort and safety of the public, the best functional design for the pavilion in order to be able to mount and dismount each show as fast as possible and the originality of form and materials and of energy management photo: Elder C Main designer, Regino Cruz Skidmore, Owings & Merrill Parque Expo JMMM Please check the shows in 'Atlantic Pavilion' Website Located at the heart of Parque das Nações, Atlantic Pavilion benefits from a privileged location Good accessibilities derived from the big road axis from eastern Lisbon, as CRIL, Vasco da Gama Bridge and North-South axis, and modern and excellent infrastructures, as River Terminal, Oriente Station, an interface of transport networks such as urban buses, Underground, CP-trains, Taxis and buses as well as 5 minutes direct link to Lisbon International Airport 4

5 photo: Marcelo N photo: Nazar Leskiw Gare do Oriente Station Av D João II 1990 Lisbon As foreseen before the tender, the station created a physical barrier between the city and the river This was a barrier we did not want as we wanted to strengthen this connection and, at the same time, use the present dynamism as a catalyst for the creation of a new and higher quality of life in Lisbon The project is a challenge at various levels - in terms of town planning and architecturally - as it includes two new avenues created in order to connect the station to the city and also, an adjacent square which intends to accentuate and make the most of the longitudinal axis of the building This multi-modal platform centralizes transport structures for the different transport systems which will service the whole intervention zone and much more There are five main nuclei, each corresponding to the various systems, specifically the train station (with it's public areas) the metro station the underground car park and the underground gallery General consultant Santiago Calatrava Tecned Parque Expo JMMM photo: Rodrigo da Cunha Metro - Oriente Bus Train 5

6 photo: João Morgado photo: Ana N Pavilion of Alameda dos Oceanos 1990 Lisbon The architect's masterpiece, both for the tension he manages to create between a necessary, desired and difficult monumentality, and the delicate articulation - with the program and the location - both for daring of the solution and its intensive effect of a representative image symbol The palatial theme, which he used first in the school in Setúbal, is here taken to expressive heights, combining the 'colossal' arcade with it's reflection and sublimation in the waters of the quay The roof of the large ceremonial area is the finishing touch to the effect, which reminds us of Niemeyer and the most innovative of modern architecture and engineering in concrete and steel It is an enormous 'shell', appearing to throw off its supports (only visible as the skeleton, like armour), and the down-facing curvature (an 'anti-dome'), like a reinforced tent, ephemeral and paradoxically vulnerable, with apparent fragility, but an enormous plastic force photo: Andy M Project is not public! 8 photo: Aires Mateus photo: Aires Mateus Rectory of Universidade Nova de Lisboa Travessa Estevão Pinto Lisbon The site used to be remote a land of farms and desolate ground is the location of the Campolide Campus of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa With the former Jesuit School, it creates a public square of imposing scale and provides a three-dimensional expression to the entrapped territory The program is divided into two distinct zones Administrative offices are located in a slender tower overlooking Monsanto Park Large scale foyers, meeting rooms and auditoriums are set at the base of the building, housed within a plinth that marks the difference in level between the public square and the school plateau The rising tower has the same height of the three-floor School building Its façades are clad in white stone with an abstract layout of fenestration concealing the many levels of the building The public square and grand steps leading up to it are clad in the same stone These more symbolic and formal spaces are carved and sculpted within the plinth photo: Aires Mateus 1998 Aires Mateus s Universidade Nova de Lisboa FMVB The Rectorate facilitates access to the building, however guided tours are not provided Visits must be scheduled with the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa s Rectorate at least 15 days in advance, otherwise they will not be authorized The building is located at the Campus of Universidade Nova de Lisboa: Campus de Campolide 8

9 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: João Sousa Centro Cultural de Belem Praça do Império Lisbon The Cultural Centre of Belém (CCB), located in the Belém quarter of Lisbon, is the largest building with cultural facilities in CCB includes very complex areas such as an auditorium for opera, ballet, symphony concerts and congresses, high security meeting halls, a library and a 7000 m² exhibition area Also located in the CCB is the Jacques Delors European Information Center The centre has m² of construction area and was prepared in a very short period ( ) The client of the project was the Portugese State through the Secretaria de Estado da Cultura (State Agency for Culture) Completed in 1992, it occupies a total of m² and is the work of architects Vittorio Gregotti and Manuel Salgado; the interior was planned by Daciano Costa photo: Nazar Leskiw Floor area/size m² Main designer, Vittorio Gregotti Manuel Salgado Joao_Sousa The CCB is located right beside the famous 'Mosteiro dos Jerónimos' By tram: take the E15 Line to Belém 9

10 photo: Fernando Guerra photo: Fernando Guerra Hotel Altis Belem Doca do Bom Sucesso Belem Lisbon The Hotel Altis Belém is on Lisbon s waterfront between Bom Sucesso Dock and the Folk Art Museum It's a 50-room, 5-star hotel with sailing facilities Its position at right angles to the Tagus offers fine views of the city sweeping down to the river and of the riverside areas from Belém Tower to the Padrão das Descobertas (monument to the Discoveries) The scale of the design establishes a relationship with the dock and creates a kind of aquatic piazza The hotel enters into a formal relationship with the Folk Art Museum building through the character of the eastern façade The design opens up the hotel functionally and formally to the riverside promenade with a ground level that is open to the public and houses shops, a restaurant, café and bar and an extensive open-air seating area The interior plans are the work of the FSSMGN studio photo: Fernando Guerra Floor area/size m² Main designer, Interior architect Risco s FSSMGN Altis,SA thecommunicationoffice 10

14 photo: MMV Arquitecto photo: MMV Arquitecto Speech Clinic Rua Tomás da Fonseca Lisbon The clinic is understood as a place of learning, concentration, where the sound and image are mandatory elements Capturing the rhythm of words, the pause between them, noise and silence, full and emptiness, is the main idea of the project From these assumptions and the analysis of the space, a landscape ceiling that vibrates like the cadence of the rhythms of nature is drawn This mechanism is balanced with the simplicity and strength of the whole The filter lets the air through and sets the sound, the mass contains both The sensations of depth, transparency, opacity and flow are given by the subtle organization of materials The Speech Clinic is situated on the ground-floor of a residential block in the city of Lisbon The idea of the project was based on the creation of a new image and concept for a clinic in the city Starting from a reduced budget, the challenge consisted of the reformulation of an existing space, into a speech clinic for a young therapist photo: MMV Arquitecto Project is not public! 16 photo: Leonardo Finotti photo: Leonardo Finotti Modernization of the Dinis Secondary School Rua Manuel Teixeira Gomes Lisbon The investment in the education sector, in particular the Modernization of Educational Facilities Program for Secondary Learning, has as its objective rehabilitating and modernizing high school buildings, replacing their physical and functional efficiency, in a perspective of creating conditions for the practice of a modern education, adapted to the programmatic contents, the didactics and the new information and communication technologies The intervention of modernization of the D Dinis Secondary School, beyond improving the architectural, constructive and respective infra-structural conditions of the existing buildings, it also aimed the programmatic improvement of the equipment by adding functional spaces in a centralized location in regards to the existing constructions, so that all the educational activity gravitates around it photo: Leonardo Finotti 2008 Bak Gordon arquitectos Parque Escolar uralguides 16
