6 photo: Marcelo N Gare do Oriente Station Av D João II 1990 Lisbon As foreseen before the tender, the station created a physical barrier between the city and the river This was a barrier we did not want as we wanted to strengthen this connection and, at the same time, use the present dynamism as a catalyst for the creation of a new and higher quality of life in Lisbon The project is a challenge at various levels - in terms of town planning and architecturally - as it includes two new avenues created in order to connect the station to the city and also, an adjacent square which intends to accentuate and make the most of the longitudinal axis of the building This multi-modal platform centralizes transport structures for the different transport systems which will service the whole intervention zone and much more There are five main nuclei, each corresponding to the various systems, specifically the train station (with it's public areas) the metro station the underground car park and the underground gallery General consultant Santiago Calatrava Tecned Parque Expo JMMM photo: Rodrigo da Cunha Metro - Oriente Bus Train 6

7 photo: João Morgado photo: Ana N Pavilion of Alameda dos Oceanos 1990 Lisbon The architect's masterpiece, both for the tension he manages to create between a necessary, desired and difficult monumentality, and the delicate articulation - with the program and the location - both for daring of the solution and its intensive effect of a representative image symbol The palatial theme, which he used first in the school in Setúbal, is here taken to expressive heights, combining the 'colossal' arcade with it's reflection and sublimation in the waters of the quay The roof of the large ceremonial area is the finishing touch to the effect, which reminds us of Niemeyer and the most innovative of modern architecture and engineering in concrete and steel It is an enormous 'shell', appearing to throw off its supports (only visible as the skeleton, like armour), and the down-facing curvature (an 'anti-dome'), like a reinforced tent, ephemeral and paradoxically vulnerable, with apparent fragility, but an enormous plastic force photo: Andy M Project is not public! 8 photo: Mallol photo: David Ramalho Elevador de Santa Justa Rua de Santa Justa Lisbon The Santa Justa Lift (Elevador de Santa Justa in Portugese, also called Carmo Lift), is an elevator in the civil parish of Santa Justa, in the historical city of Lisbon, situated at the end of Rua de Santa Justa The designer is a Porto-born French engineer Raul Mesnier de Ponsard, a student of Gustav Eiffel Originally the lift was powered by steam, it converted to electricity-powered lift in 1907 With a height of 45 metres, covering seven stories, the tower includes two elevator cabins, decorated in wood, mirrors and windows, and an initial capacity for 24 passengers in each (updated to 29 people later) The structure includes a dozen transverse beams, forming a double lattice, supported at the top by foundations at the Escadinhas de Santa Justa On the sides of the elevator, the walkway is articulated by means of bearings, as well as on the pillars, which is articulated at the base The Lift is decorated in a Neo-Gothic style in iron photo: Sujith 1902 Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard Lisbon municipal council yguo86 Winter: 7:00-21:45 h, Summer 7:00-22:45 h, Observation deck 8:30-20:30 (22:45 h possibly, depending on the situation) Walking distance from Metro station Baixa/Chiado or Rossio 8

9 photo: Antunes photo: Pedro P Vasco da Gama Tower Passeio das Tágides 1990 Lisbon The panoramic tower was conceived as an emblematic land mark of 'Expo 98', being based on the celebration of the 500 years since the discovery of the maritime route to India by Vasco da Gama The silhouette represents the metaphor of the sail which relates the secular tradition of the Portuguese as a people connected to the sea Symbolically the "prow of the ship" on the banks of the Tagus, headed east The way the building is positioned in space expresses the moment of the discovery of the world, emphasized by the mast and respective "crow's nest" which represents the volume of the restaurant and the platform from which the Atlantic Ocean can be sighted beyond a large part of the city of Lisbon's metropolitan area Both the observation deck and the restaurant were closed in 2001 The owner of the tower, state-owned Parque Expo, has received permission for a plan by Portuguese architect Nuno Leónidas to expand to a 21-storey building, on the riverside, for a luxury hotel Project is not public! 11 photo: Aires Mateus photo: Aires Mateus Rectory of Universidade Nova de Lisboa Travessa Estevão Pinto Lisbon The site used to be remote a land of farms and desolate ground is the location of the Campolide Campus of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa With the former Jesuit School, it creates a public square of imposing scale and provides a three-dimensional expression to the entrapped territory The program is divided into two distinct zones Administrative offices are located in a slender tower overlooking Monsanto Park Large scale foyers, meeting rooms and auditoriums are set at the base of the building, housed within a plinth that marks the difference in level between the public square and the school plateau The rising tower has the same height of the three-floor School building Its façades are clad in white stone with an abstract layout of fenestration concealing the many levels of the building The public square and grand steps leading up to it are clad in the same stone These more symbolic and formal spaces are carved and sculpted within the plinth photo: Aires Mateus 1998 Aires Mateus s Universidade Nova de Lisboa FMVB The Rectorate facilitates access to the building, however guided tours are not provided Visits must be scheduled with the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa s Rectorate at least 15 days in advance, otherwise they will not be authorized The building is located at the Campus of Universidade Nova de Lisboa: Campus de Campolide 11

12 Camoes Theatre Passeio de Neptuno Lisbon Confronted with two imposing adjacent buildings - the 'Pavilion of Knowledge' and the 'Oceanarium' - the design sought simplicity It's compositional form is somewhat abstract The base of the building is in keeping with the materials used in the surrounding paving, and as a result seems to secure the structure to the ground The main entrance is through a foyer with a large window overlooking the 'Sea of Straw', the exterior and interior space intimately linked The finish in the interior of the auditorium aims to confer an atmosphere of sobriety and brings back the idea of 'La machine du Téatre' photo: Osvaldo Gago Associate architect Manuel Salgado Marino Frei Parque Expo JMMM Metro: Oriente 12

13 photo: João Sousa Centro Cultural de Belem Praça do Império Lisbon The Cultural Centre of Belém (CCB), located in the Belém quarter of Lisbon, is the largest building with cultural facilities in CCB includes very complex areas such as an auditorium for opera, ballet, symphony concerts and congresses, high security meeting halls, a library and a 7000 m² exhibition area Also located in the CCB is the Jacques Delors European Information Center The centre has m² of construction area and was prepared in a very short period ( ) The client of the project was the Portugese State through the Secretaria de Estado da Cultura (State Agency for Culture) Completed in 1992, it occupies a total of m² and is the work of architects Vittorio Gregotti and Manuel Salgado; the interior was planned by Daciano Costa Floor area/size m² Main designer, Vittorio Gregotti Manuel Salgado Joao_Sousa The CCB is located right beside the famous 'Mosteiro dos Jerónimos' By tram: take the E15 Line to Belém 13

16 photo: Joao Morgado photo: Joao Morgado Coffee Shop & Shading Surface R do Estado da Índia Lisbon This intervention is part of an urban requalification plan for an avenue in Sacavém, on the outskirts of Lisbon It is promoted by Loures City Hall The project was composed of three interventions, but only two were completed The proposed buildings had the common goal of playing the decisive role at the qualification of public spaces in-between buildings, formerly abandoned and disqualified After the initial site visit and interpretation of the urban plan's main dynamics, the need was felt to design three built elements sharing a common nature, although holding different uses and problematics These three small interventions, with objective and circumscribed problems, should contribute to simplify the complexity of the environment and, above all, to reduce the impact of the turbulent context Therefore, the architects sought to design three quiet buildings, under the exciting motto 'nothing new under the sun' photo: Joao Morgado ateliermob ateliermob 16

20 photo: João Copertino photo: João Copertino RATTON The Bakery Largo Duque do Cadaval Lisbon Located in an Lisbon`s historical and emblematic area recently rehabilitated, the new bakery RATTON, is located in Largo Duque do Cadaval, next to Rossio train station As part of the historic Rossio station building, this new bakery wishes to answer the needs of a large amount of housing and services located in this area The name RATTON comes from the owner's family name and his French origin, reflecting in this way the logical connection between the Portuguese and French products produced, and the tradition in the bakery and pastry methods from the two countries This space is developed on the commercial ground floor of Largo Duque do Cadaval, existing associated exterior wooden deck terraces, providing clients the comfort and possibility of enjoying there products in a privileged outdoor location The choice of materials for RATTON *The Bakery*, reflects an informal sense to this bakery but with high quality in all elements and details that constitute it Floor area/size m² S3arquitectos Doca de Santo S3arquitectos photo: João Copertino daily: 8:00-21:

27 EDP Headquarters Av 24 de Julho Lisbon Headquarter for EDP - Energias de ranks among Europe's major electricity operators The location, in a landfill site in the city s front line between the hill and the River, corresponded to an empty lot, where in the past a power plant operated The building is composed of 2 towers, connected by 2 ramped passes that create a shaded public square at street level The building s image came from the research of a system of lights and shadows This concept comes true through the repetition of vertical lines which are simultaneously the organization module of the office programme (120m); the structural solution (corresponding the steel columns); and through the façade that results from the geometric game created by the sequence of lines in full continuity from street-level, covering the roof and crossing the square to the other tower These also function as shade structures and create a dynamic effect, depending on the observer s position: sometimes opaque, sometimes transparent Floor area/size m² Main designer, Structural engineer Contractor Aires Mateus s FVarq AFA Consult Mota Engil Grupo EDP Energias de, SA Nazar 27
