3 photo: Fernando Alda photo: Fernando Alda House on mountainside Marquesa Ayora Spain The building is located in a landscape of unique beauty, the result of a natural and evident growth The mountain, topped by a castle, is covered by a blanket housing through a system of aggregation by simple juxtaposition of pieces generated fragmented target tissue that adapts to the topography The project proposes to integrate into the environment, respecting their strategies of adaptation to the environment and materials away from the mimesis that would lead to misleading historicism, and showing the time constructively to meet the requirements of the "new people" In this way the house is conceived as a piece placed on the ground, joining in the gap A piece built on the same white lime, the same primacy of the massif on the opening, which takes the edge of the site to have their holes and integrated into the fragmentation of the environment photo: Fernando Alda Project is not public! 4 photo: Fernando Alda photo: Fernando Alda Lepe Swimming Centre Calle de la Encina Lepe Spain Set northwest of Lepe's urban zone, this swimming centre is located in a sports area that will be complemented with sports tracks and parking space Proposing a building that solved set relations with future programmes by means of its size and scale was a must Ample sunlight and guaranteed privacy were also included on the final proposal Using an elementary working scheme, the centre is organized around two courts, arranging the elements -common foyer, changing rooms, instruction- and multipurpose vessels- around them The programme is mainly organized on the ground floor, using the upper floor for administration and visitor areas, and the basement level for storage facilities The foyer is connected to the first court, which rises from the lower level and divides circulation in half The changing rooms open towards a long, stretched court which provides privacy The sequence of skylights and windows assure uniform sunlight photo: Fernando Alda Floor area/size m² Main designer, Contractor Laguillo and Schönegger Eddea Arquitectos Inmaculada Donaire Secretariat of Tourism and Sports Andalusian Regional Government EDDEA From the Autopista del Quinto Centenario, exit at the N-444 or N-445 and head in the direction of Lepe 4

5 photo: Fernando Guerra photo: Fernando Guerra Ginkgo Sítio dos Três Castelos 8500 Portimão This was one of Tiago Rosado's first projects Initially, it was supposed to be much smaller: a poolside bar for a hotel, but later it was decided to make it 'public' The only availabe space was a strip of land between the street and a tennis court The client wanted something different, visually 'clean', and comfortable It was decided to have the esplanade 'framed' by this big 'window', giving a sensation of protection from the inside The central green wall balances the composition and gives a fresh environment to the space The concrete wall is part of the structural system (prefabricated concrete): it was left 'as it is' when the contrast that this 'raw' material gave to the 'clean' space was seen: initially the wall was supposed to be adorned with a work of art The name 'Ginkgo', which is the name of a species of trees that exists for over 30 million years, is a reminder of the longevity of the good 'design', in this case by nature photo: Fernando Guerra Tiago Rosado Turang tiagorosado

7 photo: Centro de Artes de Sines photo: Centro de Artes de Sines Sines Art Centre Rua Cândido dos Reis 7520 Sines The building is situated at the start of the main street the Rua Cândido dos Reis - linking the town to the sea and marking the traditional entrance to the historic centre This building combines diverse activities: exhibition rooms, a library, cinema-and-theatre and a documentation centre Its exterior copies the volumes of the monumental scale of the castle walls At street level the building offers an unbroken view right across the inside of the building, including the activity of the centre in the daily life of the town On top of the building, near the library, is a bar with a terrace, which offers an amazing panoramic view over the historic city and the ocean The design was one of the 7 nominated projects for the Mies van der Rohe Award 2007 photo: Centro de Artes de Sines Floor area/size m² Aires Mateus s Centro de Artes de Sines Naomi The exhibition area is open every day, from 14:00-20:00h The art centre is about 5 min walking from the central bus station 7

9 photo: José Manuel photo: José Manuel College of Business Administration Manteigadas Setúbal The building is located at the Campus, outside the city In the absence of a general order for the spatial planning, the already built structures on Campus seem to have grown autonomously, without apparent relation The only obligations imposed were the number of floors (2-3), the relative location of the new building and the maintenance of the many (and beautiful) cork trees The program contained classrooms, laboratories, lbrary, auditoriums, teacher's dens, administration bureau and management bodies, covering a rough area of ft² We could not find an empty land parcel with the necessary dimension for such a big volume, so we chose to build on 2 lots, separated by the Campus's road Given the autonomy verified in the pre-existent buildings, we wanted this new school to communicate clearly to its neighbour structures, thus giving the first boost to a broad collective vision, and the smallness of the available land lots forced us to a closeness with the existing constructions photo: José Manuel 1997 ARX Arquitectos Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal ARX_ 9

10 photo: Antunes photo: Pedro P Vasco da Gama Tower Passeio das Tágides 1990 Lisbon The panoramic tower was conceived as an emblematic land mark of 'Expo 98', being based on the celebration of the 500 years since the discovery of the maritime route to India by Vasco da Gama The silhouette represents the metaphor of the sail which relates the secular tradition of the Portuguese as a people connected to the sea Symbolically the "prow of the ship" on the banks of the Tagus, headed east The way the building is positioned in space expresses the moment of the discovery of the world, emphasized by the mast and respective "crow's nest" which represents the volume of the restaurant and the platform from which the Atlantic Ocean can be sighted beyond a large part of the city of Lisbon's metropolitan area Both the observation deck and the restaurant were closed in 2001 The owner of the tower, state-owned Parque Expo, has received permission for a plan by Portuguese architect Nuno Leónidas to expand to a 21-storey building, on the riverside, for a luxury hotel Project is not public! 11 photo: João Morgado photo: Ana N Pavilion of Alameda dos Oceanos 1990 Lisbon The architect's masterpiece, both for the tension he manages to create between a necessary, desired and difficult monumentality, and the delicate articulation - with the program and the location - both for daring of the solution and its intensive effect of a representative image symbol The palatial theme, which he used first in the school in Setúbal, is here taken to expressive heights, combining the 'colossal' arcade with it's reflection and sublimation in the waters of the quay The roof of the large ceremonial area is the finishing touch to the effect, which reminds us of Niemeyer and the most innovative of modern architecture and engineering in concrete and steel It is an enormous 'shell', appearing to throw off its supports (only visible as the skeleton, like armour), and the down-facing curvature (an 'anti-dome'), like a reinforced tent, ephemeral and paradoxically vulnerable, with apparent fragility, but an enormous plastic force photo: Andy M Project is not public! 14 photo: Marcelo N photo: Nazar Leskiw Gare do Oriente Station Av D João II 1990 Lisbon As foreseen before the tender, the station created a physical barrier between the city and the river This was a barrier we did not want as we wanted to strengthen this connection and, at the same time, use the present dynamism as a catalyst for the creation of a new and higher quality of life in Lisbon The project is a challenge at various levels - in terms of town planning and architecturally - as it includes two new avenues created in order to connect the station to the city and also, an adjacent square which intends to accentuate and make the most of the longitudinal axis of the building This multi-modal platform centralizes transport structures for the different transport systems which will service the whole intervention zone and much more There are five main nuclei, each corresponding to the various systems, specifically the train station (with it's public areas) the metro station the underground car park and the underground gallery General consultant Santiago Calatrava Tecned Parque Expo JMMM photo: Rodrigo da Cunha Metro - Oriente Bus Train 14

16 photo: Maria Timóteo photo: Maria Timóteo Control and coordination center Quinta da Torre da Agulha São Domingos de Rana Just after the toll gate on the highway to Carcavelos, among the complex of buildings that comprise Brisa's - Auto estradas de, lies the new Control and Coordination Center The rectangular prism, intended to be low, elegant and light, gleams brightness and reflects the sun due to its cladding of solar panels on the east, south and west facade The panels also cover the roof as a means of optimizing the energy requirements of the building They produce hot water and are totally responsible for the conditioning of the facilities The apparent technological character induced by the modular multiplication of the panels, occludes the north facade, entirely clad in dark volcanic stone This stone retains humidity and promotes the growth of moss and lichen Along this long and dark wall, extends a small and concealed parking lot, punctuated by trees The continuity of the stone wall is slightly interrupted, creating the entrance on an unexpected and luminous patio photo: Maria Timóteo Public access unknown! 20 photo: José Manuel photo: José Manuel Digital Central Unit Porto Salvo Oeiras The explosion of new residential neighbourhoods in the Cascais area led to the need to broaden telecom networks, therefore the need to build this Digital Central and to have it working, on a first stage, at only 50 percent of its full capacity A Telecom Central is a very specific building, being uninhabited for the most part, except for sparse maintenance visits and where, due to the sensitive machinery inside, natural light is not at all wanted Bearing in mind its sensitivity and expenses, this equipment demands a constant temperature and humidity, besides the need to be immune to any power instability Thus, the building has to be fully autonomous in terms of energy Its monitoring and control is made remotely from Lisbon Having no other inner requirements than the logic of its machinery, the architectonic concept for the building was centred in shape and in urban performance photo: José Manuel Floor area/size m² ARX Arquitectos Telefones de Lisboa e Porto ARX_ 20

21 photo: Aires Mateus photo: Aires Mateus Rectory of Universidade Nova de Lisboa Travessa Estevão Pinto Lisbon The site used to be remote a land of farms and desolate ground is the location of the Campolide Campus of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa With the former Jesuit School, it creates a public square of imposing scale and provides a three-dimensional expression to the entrapped territory The program is divided into two distinct zones Administrative offices are located in a slender tower overlooking Monsanto Park Large scale foyers, meeting rooms and auditoriums are set at the base of the building, housed within a plinth that marks the difference in level between the public square and the school plateau The rising tower has the same height of the three-floor School building Its façades are clad in white stone with an abstract layout of fenestration concealing the many levels of the building The public square and grand steps leading up to it are clad in the same stone These more symbolic and formal spaces are carved and sculpted within the plinth photo: Aires Mateus 1998 Aires Mateus s Universidade Nova de Lisboa FMVB The Rectorate facilitates access to the building, however guided tours are not provided Visits must be scheduled with the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa s Rectorate at least 15 days in advance, otherwise they will not be authorized The building is located at the Campus of Universidade Nova de Lisboa: Campus de Campolide 21

22 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: João Sousa Centro Cultural de Belem Praça do Império Lisbon The Cultural Centre of Belém (CCB), located in the Belém quarter of Lisbon, is the largest building with cultural facilities in CCB includes very complex areas such as an auditorium for opera, ballet, symphony concerts and congresses, high security meeting halls, a library and a 7000 m² exhibition area Also located in the CCB is the Jacques Delors European Information Center The centre has m² of construction area and was prepared in a very short period ( ) The client of the project was the Portugese State through the Secretaria de Estado da Cultura (State Agency for Culture) Completed in 1992, it occupies a total of m² and is the work of architects Vittorio Gregotti and Manuel Salgado; the interior was planned by Daciano Costa photo: Nazar Leskiw Floor area/size m² Main designer, Vittorio Gregotti Manuel Salgado Joao_Sousa The CCB is located right beside the famous 'Mosteiro dos Jerónimos' By tram: take the E15 Line to Belém 22

23 photo: Daniel Malhão photo: Daniel Malhão José Saramago Municipal Library Rua 4 de Outubro Loures The new Public Library of Loures, one of Lisbon's satellite towns, faces a landscape of banality Building a library in a crowded place sounds reasonable, except that people nowadays are as much alienated from reading cities and their visual culture in a critical way as they are from reading books In his choice of a clean aluminium cladding, Fernando Reis Martins correctly appropriates the banality of the post-industrial, whilst on the other hand, the wooden entrance 'tunnel' that traverses the library and defines its central axis speaks of comfort and welcome It vaguely resembles the famous church entrance by Tadao Ando, as it also uses simple wood craftmanship to convey proximity and warmth In the main hall, Martins contrasts these elements with the stark boldness of high concrete walls In its use of industrial banality transformed by qualities of composition and precision, the new library conveys a sense of 'reading' with a new sensibility through readily available materials photo: Daniel Malhão 2003 Associate Associate Associate Associate Fernando Reis Martins Carmen Morais João Lomelino João Santa Rita Paulo Palma Câmara Municipal de Loures architect architect architect architect Pedro_Gadanho 23

24 photo: Rita Burmester photo: Rita Burmester Community Centre Rua Américo Farinha Rio de Mouro The project of the Community Centre and Exterior Spaces fits in a set of equipments that intent to reuse this urban area and to endow it with the necessary public equipment The intention of this project is to recycle the urban structure So it gives back to the land the natural morphology The proposal has the main intents to: recycle the existing urban structure through the creation of a natural platform; to implant the building in the north limit, defining an urban front for the square allowing an exterior space of leisure in the interior of the block; to redesign the walk through passages between different squares; to organize the program guarantee its autonomy and its link with the common services photo: Rita Burmester Project is not public! 31 photo: FG+SG photo: FG+SG Barreiro College of Technology Quinta dos Fidalguinhos Barreiro The site assigned for the School is located in the outskirts of the city of Barreiro The location had at one end a dense forest of cork and large pine trees There are some projects that cause a public reaction even before its existence, with a great deal of important matters to consider This school is such an example The inhabitants of this neighbourhood protested because they wanted a primary school instead which was transferred elsewhere, and because they feared the impact a building of large proportions would have, both visually and ecologically Fearing that the trees would be cut down, they counted and marked every single one So we gave the building an ambiguous character On one hand it "dissipates" and accepts the prevalence of the natural elements, on the other hand it deals with their presence as an artificial element of abstract origin This principle is highlighted by the constructive choices: big coal-grey block that, when sectioned, reveals a white interior photo: FG+SG Floor area/size m² ARX Arquitectos Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal ARX_ 31
