4 PRESIDENT S REPORT 2015 Liz Peck MSc FSLL SLL President May 2016 I am delighted and honoured to share my reflections on 2015, the UNESCO International Year of Light (IYoL). What a year it was! The Society s IYoL commenced with the UK s opening ceremony at St James Palace at the invitation of HRH, Prince Andrew, Duke of York, KG in his capacity as UK Patron of the IYoL. We then attended the opening ceremony in Paris, John Aston, Jane Duncan (RIBA) and I joined the esteemed company of multiple Nobel Laureates and many other excellent speakers; no doubt you will have read John s outstanding series of articles on the event in the Newsletter. In March, we met HRH the Duke of York again when he attended the Fresnel Lecture, delivered by Peter Phillipson, at the Royal Institution of Great Britain. I know John gave a lot of his time beforehand, meeting with the equerries to ensure the evening went smoothly and HRH seemed to enjoy the lecture immensely. Throughout the year, as usual, we ve been running Masterclasses across the UK and Ireland and our various committees have performed brilliantly once again, delivering new versions of LG7 (Offices), LG8 (Museums & Art Galleries) and LG12 (Emergency Lighting). Our Communications committee has been revitalised under Iain Carlile s leadership and we have huge followings on Twitter and LinkedIn, a vital route to communicating with new, old and potential members alike. The new LET Diploma has been tested and will have its first full intake in Membership rocketed to over 3,000 in 2015, with many members joining or upgrading to corporate membership. The Lighting Family has grown over the year and through 2015, we ve collaborated with the Royal Photographic Society, Institute of Physics, SELECT and the Electrical Contractors Association on various events. More is planned and the lighting family will continue to grow and thrive. 4 I was especially delighted to have so many invited guests at my inauguration in May, both lighting friends who ve been a part of my own journey to presidency and also those from other like-minded organisations who I hoped to build relationships with over the coming year. Then came October 1st: the Night of Heritage Light. Without doubt, the largest single event the Society has ever staged. Thanks to an amazing team effort, the night was a huge success: a social media sensation and featured on prime-time BBC national television. Many people have said that it was their highlight of the IYoL and I was invited to present NoHL at the IYoL international closing ceremony in Mexico, so now it s a global phenomenon too! I would like to thank all of our dedicated volunteers, who give up so much of their time for the benefit of the Society and the wider public; the Executive, Council members and all of you who serve on our numerous committees as well as those of you who give time to help us stage our wonderful events; it really is valued and I thank you all most sincerely. Finally, thanks to Brendan and Juliet for all of their work this year; it was challenging at times but as we move from IYoL to the UNESCO International Year of Pulses, I hope 2016 is a little calmer!

5 SOCIETY EVENTS During 2015, the Society celebrated the UNESCO International Year of Light (IYoL), holding a variety of new and annual events throughout the year. The Society held the first UK event celebrating IYoL, which was a viewing of Arup s 24:00:00 exhibition at their London office. The exhibition explored lighting in the urban age and the 24 hour city. Ready Steady Light also took place in March with 14 professional teams competing against each other. Once again, the event was organised in partnership with Rose Bruford College. At the end of June, the Society supported and attended the 28th CIE Sessional Meeting and Conference, held in Manchester. The Society also supported the 45th Cambridge Ophthalmological Symposium in September. The Society returned to LuxLive in November, hosting the 21st Young Lighter of the Year final with the winner, Youmna Abdallah announced at the Lux Awards. The SLL President, Liz Peck was also awarded Lux Person of the Year. In November, the Society also hosted a joint event at the Savoy Theatre with the Association of British Theatre Technicians (ABTT), the Association of Light Designers (ALD) and the IALD. The event focused on the history of the house lighting at the Savoy Theatre. SLL events are open for all to attend and are designed to benefit the Society s members, the lighting community and the public at large. October proved to be one of the busiest months that the Society has ever had, starting with the Night of Heritage Light (NOHL) on 1st October. The Society held the second Jonathan Speirs Memorial Lecture on 21st October, which focused on the Stirling Prize shortlisted Maggie s Centre, Lanarkshire. Following this, the Masterclass series, Inside Out: Light and Architecture was launched in Cardiff. SLL Secretary, Brendan Keely then flew to Rome to represent the Society at PLD-C. Brendan was also the mentor for the winners of the PLD-C student speaker competition, The Challenge. 5

8 FINANCE REPORT 2014/2015 COMPARISON 2015 has been a remarkable year, not just for the huge success of the IYoL, but also for some unusual financial challenges. We did end the year with a surplus of 15,354, slightly less than 2014 but up on 2013, but that figure is after some extraordinary costs: protecting our Ready Steady Light brand; an expensive to deliver Fresnel lecture; and after the challenging but amazing Night of Heritage Light. Publication sales continue to be stronger than feared, but our delegate fees from events such as Masterclass need to improve. Out of reserves we will be contributing 3,000 support to the LET, a sum previously paid by CIBSE.
