2 The Conference Event details This event will provide a definitive guide to the latest developments in building contracts and construction law in Scotland. It is suited to Architects, Engineers, Solicitors, Chartered Surveyors and Contractors in both the private and public sectors. This year we will feature the construction industry going forward: the challenges and changes the sector faces and how it is responding. The programme also includes invaluable updates on SBCC contracts and legal issues affecting the industry. 4 About the Speakers David Dunbar Chair, SBCC David Dunbar is Chair of the Scottish Building Contracts Committee and Chair of Festival of Architecture David is Managing Director of ADF Architects. He is a Fellow of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland, a Member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He is President of the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. He is a former Deputy Convenor of Court at the University of Strathclyde. He is a Past President of the Glasgow Institute of Architects and the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland. Len Bunton Past Chair, SBCC Len Bunton is the immediate past Chair of the Scottish Building Contracts Committee Ltd, and Past Chairman of the Scottish Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He currently practices as an Arbitrator, Adjudicator, Mediator and an Expert Witness. Len has extensive experience in the procurement, delivery of and cost management of major projects. He has worked on construction disputes in 9 international countries. He currently presents courses on Arbitration for the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Ken Gillespie Chief Operating Officer, Galliford Try Ken Gillespie is Chief Operating Officer at Galliford Try plc. Ken joined the Group in March 2006 on the acquisition of Morrison Construction, where he was then Managing Director. He joined Morrison in 1996 having spent the previous 13 years holding senior positions with George Wimpey. He is also Chairman and Director of the Scottish Contractors Group, a member of the Construction Scotland Industry Leadership Group and a Fellow of the Royal Incorporation of Chartered Surveyors.

5 About the Speakers Brian Hume Health and Safety Manager, Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering Brian is a vastly experienced Health and Safety Manager with 39 years experience in the Construction Industry for Balfour Beatty. He has been involved in Health and Safety for over 35 years. During this period he has been responsible for the provision of a comprehensive health and safety service covering all types of building and civil engineering works. He has experience in commercial and industrial building, refurbishment, house building, civil and marine works etc., and has been in involved in construction projects in many environments including power generation, water and sewerage, rail, petrochemical and the nuclear industries. He is a Fellow of IOSH and is on the IOSH West of Scotland committee. He has also been a member of the Site Safe Scotland Committee. Professor Hector MacQueen University of Edinburgh Professor Hector MacQueen has been a Scottish Law Commissioner since September He has taught in the Edinburgh Law School since He is a Fellow of the British Academy and of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His main research interests are in the law of obligations (especially contract) and commercial law, legal history, and European private law. David Philp Deputy Chair of the Procurement Review David s enthusiasm lies in highlighting the potential of new technologies and how we interact with them to bring added value to our customers and unlock new ways of working throughout the entire life-cycle. David is passionate about our industry and perceives BIM as being a catalyst for reform. An early adopter of practical change and purposeful collaboration, he is Global Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Information Management (Consultancy Director) for AECOM, the global, fully integrated services firm. He is also seconded into the Scottish Future Trust (SFT) as Chair of the BIM Delivery Group and UK BIM Task Group as part of the core team. He lives in Scotland and his hobbies include photography and collecting air miles. A Fellow of the ICE, RICS and CIOB he has completed the Virtual Design and Construct at Stanford University, CA. and is a Professor at Glasgow Caledonian University.

6 About the Speakers Manus Quigg Partner, Brodies Manus has been a partner in Brodies Construction & Engineering Unit for six years. He has been a solicitor for 15 years, having initially qualified and practiced in England. He specialises in construction disputes, working for clients throughout the UK. Manus sits on the Association for Consultancy & Engineering Committee for Scotland and is a member of the Society of Construction Law, the Adjudication Society and the Chartered Insurance Institute. Richard Saxon Chair, JCT Richard Saxon is chartered as an architect and surveyor and spent 40 years at BDP, the inter-discipline practice, where he rose to become chairman. He has been involved in reform of the construction industry since the Latham Review and was invited to be the first Povey Lecturer by the JCT in He chaired the reform group Be: collaborating for the Built Environment and wrote the report Be Valuable, published in 2005 by Constructing Excellence. Richard is a founder and past President of the British Council for Offices, a former vice-president of the RIBA and a board member of the CIC until He works as a client and business adviser and wrote the report Growth through BIM for BIS in 2013 whilst on the government BIM Steering Group. He became chair of JCT in March He was made a CBE in 2001 for services to architecture and construction. His book, BIM for Construction Clients, was published in February 2016 by NBS.

7 About the Speakers Karyn Watt Partner, Anderson Strathern Karyn is a partner in Anderson Strathern s Corporate group and is head of Infrastructure. She has over 29 years construction industry experience and is accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a specialist in Construction Law. She is a member of Construction Scotland Industry Leadership Group which plays a crucial role in shaping and delivering Scotland s economic ambitions. Karyn is New York bar qualified and is a qualified mediator. She is on the Board, the Consultative Committee and in the drafting team of the Scottish Building Contracts Committee (SBCC) and also acts for Build UK Limited. She leads major projects on behalf of both local authorities and the private sector, involving complex strategic procurement and project issues. In recognition of her contribution to the industry, Karyn was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the RIAS in Barry White Chief Executive, Scottish Futures Trust Barry leads the executive team in delivering its remit of improving value for money in infrastructure investment and asset management in Scotland. Currently heading programmes investing in Scottish infrastructure across road, health, and education projects, SFT is also deploying innovative financing techniques, including TIF (Tax Incremental Finance) and GAM (Growth Accelerator Model), to support economic investment in Scottish cities and wider communities and to deliver new approaches to provide affordable homes. Barry s team leads on the implementation of the World Class 2020 programme Scotland s digital vision as well as collaborating throughout the public sector to ensure that buildings occupied, owned and put on the market are managed effectively. Barry has more than 20 years infrastructure experience and was previously the Managing Director of the UK arm of a major European infrastructure investor and developer. He also has served in the Army which he joined after graduating in civil engineering from Edinburgh University.
